1 INTRODUCTION Welcome to Turnitin. Turnitin provides originality checking services, class management tools, and paperless digital grading products to educational institutions around the world. This user guide provides thorough explanations of the features and products found in the Turnitin website that are available for use by instructors. Turnitin products that may be available based on the purchase made by an institution include: Originality Check - submitted papers are compared for matches or similar text to information in available repositories used by Turnitin. The results of this comparison are made available in the easy to read format of the Originality Report 1. Creating a User Profile All users on the Turnitin system must create a user profile. All instructors should have received from turnitin confirming that they have been added as instructors. If you are a chairperson and have not received an from tunitin confirming that you have been added as an instructor please contact the Library on extension 361 and ask Mr Chigwagwa or Mrs Masunda. The will contain your username and an autogenerated password for your turnitin account. 2. Logging In To begin using Turnitin, you must first log in, to do so go to, If the instructor is logging into a profile using a temporary password received via e- mail, the system will require a confirmation of the user information. New users must also set a personal password and secret question/answer information. The new password that is set by the user will replace the temporary password and will be required for all future login attempts. 1

3 The Instructor Homepage Instructor s homepage After logging in the instructor user is brought to the homepage. The instructor homepage provides access to many Turnitin features. The instructor homepage lists the accounts and classes the instructor has created. 3. Creating classes on Turnitin The creation of a class (es) on the Turnitin system is the first step in allowing an instructor and students to access and use the services available at their institution. Most instructor and student activities on Turnitin occurs within the class or classes created by an instructor. The class is used by the instructor to organize students and student submissions into groups. A single class may be used for multiple courses but is typically not recommended due to the additional challenges this can create in organization. A class and its assignments are fully available to the instructor between the date of the class creation and the selected expiration date. Once a class has expired, the 3
4 information and assignments in the class are viewable but no new submissions or assignments may be made. The instructor is capable of extending the expired class to reactivate it. New classes should be created each semester when a new group of students is in a course. To add a new class for the students you are supervising please follow the following steps. 1 Click the Add Class Button as shown below: Click Here to create a new class 2 On the screen that will follow enter the following information: i) Class name ii) Enrolment password Below is a diagram showing how this is done. 4
5 Enter class name (Program Name) Enter enrolment password Chose Standard Class here Note All classes created by an instructor have an expiry date. This is indicated during the creation of each class. The name of the class and the programme name that the students are studying for. 4. Creating Assignments All submissions by students are made to assignments in a Turnitin class. Assignments for a given class are created, displayed, and modified from the class homepage. To reach the class homepage, the instructor must click on the name of the class. As for the Midlands State University, all assignment, names will be called Dissertations as we will be dealing with dissertations only. The following are a series of steps that are used to create an assignment. 5

8 4.3 Enter the Name of the assignment in this case Dissertations Name of the assignment Leave this blank Leave them as they are Then you click the submit button. The page shown below will then appear on your screen: 8
9 5. Uploading Dissertation into Turnitin To upload papers click the link more actions as shown below and select Submit paper on the drop down menu that appears. Click here to submit paper 9
10 5.1 Enter the details of the student i.e. first name of the student, surname and title of the student dissertation as shown below, then browse for the file to upload and the click upload 10
11 5.2 Submission Preview Verify the information shown in this page to see if it is correct then click the submit button as shown below or otherwise click return to uploading page if there is an error in the information supplied. Click here to complete submission Click here if there are errors 11

14 Detailed Report View The detailed report view is shown below Original Document Similarity Percentage This section shows the internet sources of the text that has been found to match that in the dissertation. 14
15 6. Converting the Results to a pdf Document To do this successfully you need to install a pdf printer on your machine. You can contact the library to get assistance on this. Click here to convert the report to text only so that it can be converted to pdf easily. The text format of the report will look as shown below: 15
16 To convert to pdf click the printer icon as shown below: Click here to convert to pdf A preview of the print version will then be produced as shown below 16
17 To continue to print click the print link Click here to print 17
18 In the printing dialogue box that popes up select your pdf printer as shown below. Select you pdf printer here and then click ok button to print 18
19 You will then be prompted to specify the file location of the report and then click serve (Advisably create a file with name turnitin reports) as shown below Give the name of the file. Preferably Registration Number Click here to serve the document 19

Uploading Turnitin Results to our Local Turnitin Database Our local Turnitin database is a collection of all dissertations that have been scanned for plagiarised content, and their Turnitin reports respectively. This comes as way of ensuring that the lecturer can easily access these results in their elearning accounts. To do that login to your elearning account and click the link Turnitin Database Click to access Turnitin database Turnitin Database homepage Enter Registration number of the student and click search button click search button If the student is registered then the following page will appear otherwise if the student is not registered an error message will appear. 20
