Welcome to the Turnitin Blackboard Integration. The Turnitin Building Block extension gives users of the Blackboard Learning System the ability to use Turnitin products within their Blackboard interface. Turnitin provides plagiarism prevention services, class management tools, and paperless digital grading products to educational institutions around the world. Please Note: Due to compatibility issues it is recommended to make use of the Firefox webbrowser when working with Turnitin. Using internet Explorer with Turnitin will cause loss of some functionality. This will be addressed in a future update. Creating a Turnitin Assignment Turnitin assignments are added from the course home page. Click Assignment on the left side of the course menu and then click on the Turnitin Direct Assignments link on the assessment pulldown menu. To add a Turnitin assignment, follow these steps: 1. On the assignment creation page, enter the following: the assignment title and assignment Description 1
Please Note: The Assignment description Field needs to contain text before the assignment is submitted, an empty assignment description field will result in an error message, and the assignment will not be saved. This will be addressed in a future update select the submission method for the assignment. The default is Allow Both. Allow Both will give your student's the option to choose which method they would like to use. File upload will require your students to submit a file to the assignment. Text submission will require your students to copy and paste their paper in a text box to submit their paper. 2
2. Enter the point value of the assignment in the Overall Grade field. The default is 100 Note: Assignment name and Overall Grade are required fields. 3. Select start and due dates for the assignment. Specific times are also selected. Students are only able to submit once the start date and time has passed. After the due date and time, students will be blocked unless late submissions are enabled. In Blackboard, the post date relates to the availability of GradeMark papers only and has no bearing on when grades are posted to the Blackboard Gradebook. 4. Exclusions This feature of assignment creation provides instructors with the ability to automatically exclude small matches from all Originality Reports generated within this assignment. To exclude small matches select either the Exclude by word countor Exclude by percentage options from the Exclude small matches by drop down menu. You are able to exclude small matches from an originality report, these can be set by a specific word limit or percentage value. For example if you do not want the originality report to show matches that are under 10 words you can set it here. Enter into the Minimum value to exclude field a numerical value that will be excluded from the Originality Report. 3
You can automatically choose if bibliographic material should be excluded from an Originality Report. The default setting isno. Bibliographic material can also be toggled on and off while viewing the Originality Report. Note: You will be unable to change this setting once the first paper has be submitted You can automatically exclude parts of an Originality Report that contain quoted material. The default setting is No. Quoted material can be toggled on and off from while viewing the Originality Report. Note: You will be unable to change this setting once the first paper has be submitted 5. Paper Repository Options You are able to choose between two options for where papers are stored within Turnitin. No Repository and the Standard Repository. Choosing No Repository will not store the paper within the Turnitin database, making it impossible for us to look for collusion between papers. Standard Repository is the default option and will include submitted papers into the Turnitin database. Note: If your institution has paid for a private node there will be an option to use your private repository here. 4
Repository Sources for Originality Reports You are able to select which of the available repository sources to compare submissions against. This option allows you to choose the sources that are relevant to you and disable ones that might not be. There are three different database search options: Check stored student papers, Check Internet, and Check Journals and Publications. Check stored student papers will check against our database of previously submitted student papers from institutions from around the world. Check Internet will check the student's work against our vast store of webpages, that includes a constantly updated collection of pages and archived pages. Check Journals and Publications matches papers against our database of scholarly journals and other publications. 6. Grade Options To reveal grades to students immediately after grading select Yes from the drop down menu. Ignore Turnitin Grades If you enable this assignment option grades set within the Turnitin interface will not be passed back to the Gradecenter. 5
Use Grademark To use GradeMark the online paperless grading tool provided by Turnitin to grade submissions select Yes from the drop down menu. 7. Other Assignment Options There are three options for generating Originality Reports for student submissions: Generate reports immediately, first report is final - Originality Reports for all submissions will be generated immediately. Students cannot resubmit papers. Submissions must be deleted by the instructor to enable resubmission. Generate reports immediately, reports can be overwritten until due date - Originality Reports for the initial submission by each student user to this assignment will be generated immediately. Students may resubmit as often as the student wishes until the assignment due date. Originality Reports for the second or subsequent submission will require a 24 hour delay before the Originality Report begins processing. Only the latest submission is available to the instructor or student. Previous versions are removed. Student submissions will compare against one another within the assignment on the due date and time, which may result in a change in the Originality Report similarity index and results at the due date and time. This option is typically used when students are self-reviewing and revising their submissions and able to view the Originality Report. No resubmissions after the due date and time of the assignment. Generate reports On Due Date - Originality Reports will not be generated for any submission until the due date and time of the assignment. Students may resubmit as many times as needed until the due date and time without receiving reports. Resubmissions may not be made after the due date and time of the assignment. 6
Grading Schema This tells Turnitin how you would like grades to be reported to your students as a raw score, text, a percentage, a letter grade or a complete/incomplete mark. Allow Students to See Originality Reports You can enable this option to allow student to see the Originality Report generated by Turnitin. Select yes to allow student to see the Originality Report for the assignment. the default setting is no. Late Submission You can enable submissions after the due date and time. To enable late submissions, use the Allow submissions after the due date option and select yes. The default setting is no. When enabled, students will be able to submit papers after the due date and time has passed as long as that student has not already submitted a paper to the assignment. Safe Instructor Defaults If you want to use the same settings for all of your Turnitin Direct Assignments going forward, you can select Yes here and save the way you have set this assignment to be the default for all of your future assignments. If you do this, you can still change settings when you set up the assignment. 7
Use these options as system defaults If you want to use the same settings for all of your Turnitin Direct Assignments going forward, you can select Yes here and save the way you have set this assignment to be the default for all future assignments. If you do this, you can still change individual settings when you set up the assignment. When you are finished setting up your assignment, click Create Assignment. 8
Assignment Submission Dates All assignment dates relating to this assignment are shown on the Summary page. From the Content link in the side bar find the assignment you would like to view and click View Assignment. which will take you to the Submissions Inbox. Submitting a Paper To submit a Blackboard Direct assignment, the file must be uploaded to an existing assignment that has been created by an instructor. To check the start date and due date information click on the pencil icon in the tools subsection of the summary page to edit these dates. 9
By clicking on the calendar icon the date/time selector will appear. You can use this to edit the Start, Due and Post dates. Please Note: Due to compatibility issues changes to set dates will not be processed while using internet explorer, for now please make use of the Firefox Browser. This will be adressed in a future update. Start Date The Start Date defines the earliest time a student can make a submission to the assignment part. Due Date This is the final date by which the student should have submitted their assignment. If Late Submissions is enabled then submissions made after the due date will be marked as late. Post Date This is the date when marks/grades will be made available to students. File Upload The file upload submission type allows you to submit to an assignment through directly loading the file from your computer. 1. Click the Submit tab to open the assignment submission page. 1

File Types and Size Turnitin currently accepts the following file types for upload into an assignment to generate an originality report: Microsoft Word (DOC and DOCX)* Corel WordPerfect HTML Adobe PostScript Plain text (TXT) Rich Text Format (RTF) Portable Document Format (PDF) OpenOffice (ODT) Hangul (HWP) The file size may not exceed 40 MB. Files of larger size may be reduced in size by removal of nontext content or the instructor may be contacted to request multiple assignments to submit the document in sections. Note: Text only files may not exceed 2 MB. 13
Submissions Inbox Once an assignment submission has been made to Blackboard Direct, the Turnitin Submission Inbox will contain your submitted paper and the assignment status will change from Active to Completed. Your instructor may or may not have allowed allowed students to view the Originality Report for assignments; your access to the Originality Report depends on the report generation speed that your instructor has chosen. The Originality Report will appear either immediately after submission, or on the assignment's due date. If the report is set to generate on the due date, pending will appear until this time. Once the report has been generated, a percentage will appear under the bar chart icon. If your instructor has used GradeMark to grade the paper, then once the post date passes, students will see a comment icon that will open GradeMark when clicked. 14
After submission, the Submissions Inbox contains the following information: 15
Accessing Inbox After you submit a paper, our system will begin processing the paper and will generate an Originality Report within minutes for supported file types. To view the report, click the "Inbox" button on submission confirmation page. Your assignment inbox will open. Please note that you can also open your assignment inbox from your class homepage by clicking on the "View" link in the Actions column next to the paper assignment. 16
The Originality Report will open in a new window called the Document Viewer. The Document Viewer allows instructors to access each Turnitin product in one location and view all the products simultaneously as layers. All the top sources found to match the paper submission are in the sidebar to the right of the paper contents. Top sources are the sources that have the closest match (most matching words without variation) to the document's text. To view all underlying sources for a top source hover the cursor over the source and click on the arrow icon. The overlapping sources are listed below the top source. To exclude a source from the Match Breakdown list click on the 'Select Sources to be Excluded' button at the bottom of the source list. Click on the check box next to all the sources you would like to exclude. Once you have selected all the sources to exclude, click on the 'Exclude (#)' button at the bottom of the Match Breakdownlist. If the sources that were excluded affects the Similarity Index it will recalculate and display a new percentage of matching content. 17
Leaving Feedback on Submissions From the Assignment Inbox click on the blue pencil icon next to the paper title to open the paper in GradeMark to grade the student submission online. The GradeMark system contains several tools and types of mark that instructors can use in grading and assessing papers. These include: comments inline comments QuickMark comments rubric scorecards general comments voice comments For more information about Turnitin: 18
