1 Student Guide: Turnitin Originality report Advance note for students: This guide is for helping you with checking referencing of a draft file for assessment, it does not relate to a final submission. It is also strongly advised that you plan in advance, time for checking your draft with Turnitin as described below as each upload may take up to 24 hours for a new originality report to generate.

2 1. Login to the Hub, select the course module that you draft relates to. 2. Ordinarily you should find a Turnitin link in the Plagiarism and Referencing area of your module hub area. NOTE: If there is no link in the Plagiarism and Referencing area, please contact schooloffice@qmu.ac.uk Plagiarism checker tool 3. Select View/Complete

3 4. To submit you draft file for checking select the blue Submit button. NOTE: If you have submitted a previous draft to this tool the blue button maybe labeled Resubmit. In the instance of resubmitting, a draft the new originality report will take up to 24 hours to generate. 5. Your first and last name will be automatically completed 6. As this is the Plagiarism Checking tool not your final submission dropbox in Submission title name your upload DRAFT followed by your version number eg. DRAFTV3 7. We recommend that before uploading your Draft file you check that the file is saved as.docx or.pdf - Files must also be less than 40MB in size. You upload file must also contain more than 20 words of text to be accepted.

4 8. In order to attach your Draft file there are 3 options to add, click the button applicable to you: 9. Once you have selected you file click the blue Upload button. 10. After the upload a preview page will show and ask you to confirm you would like to submit. Click the blue Confirm button.

5 11. Once you confirm your submission a digital receipt will appear. 12. Select Return to assignment list to go back to your inbox. 13. Until the originality report is generated, the Similarity column will state Processing. The time for the processing to complete may vary depending on the size of file, Turnitin server demand and if it was a resubmission up to 24 hours.

6 14. While you wait, select the browser refresh button at the top of the screen. When the report has generated a % will appear under the Similarity column. 15. To access your similarity report click on the percentage result. This will open up your draft document with the report. INTERPRETING ORIGINALITY REPORTS The similarity score is a percentage of the paper's matches to other sources; it is not an assessment of whether the paper includes plagiarized material. The similarity report is a tool for instructors to easily find matches or similar text within submitted work. 16. The Match Overview gives you a breakdown of all the matches that have been found in the paper and allows you to clearly view the similarity score. Matches are ordered by highest instance of similarity down to the lowest. Each match has a color and a number attached to it. These color tags will help you to find the match on the paper itself. 17. To view your Match Overview, click on the red, numerical similarity score from the toolbar on the right of your open document.

7 18. Having clicked the Match Overview icon, this will also highlight any matches within the paper itself. Each match can be color coded to help you identify them easily. 19. By clicking on one of the sources from the Match Overview side panel, you can discover how many matches have been found for each source. Click the navigation arrows to jump from one match to the next; this will move you through the paper itself. 20. Should you wish to see a match breakdown for each source, click the arrow to the right of the source. 21. You can now see a large list of all the sources concerning this particular match. Click any of these matches to be directed to it on your paper.

8 22. If you would like to see more information regarding the text that has matched to a source, click on the source number from within the paper 23. A pop-up box will appear; this will show you further details relating to the source that your writing has been matched with.

9 24. Should you wish to view the source in more depth, click on the Full Source View icon in the top right-hand corner of the pop-up. 25. The right-hand side panel will change to Full Source Text, which you can scroll through to read in detail. 26. Click the X icon in the top right-hand corner of the side panel to return to the Match Overview.

10 27. In the All Sources side panel, all of the sources that have been found are displayed and sorted by highest percentage to lowest percentage match. Clicking on any source will change the navigation bar at the top of the page, displaying how many times that this source has matched in the paper. Clicking the arrows will allow you to see where these have matched on the page. You can further refine this navigation by clicking on an individual page within a source; this will simply show you matches from that specific sub-source. 28. To view All Sources, click on the red graph icon from the similarity toolbar. 29. You can now see a large list of all the sources for this paper. Click any of these matches to be directed to it on your paper.

11 30. Click the X icon in the top right-hand corner of the side panel to close the full panel. 31. You may apply several different filters to your report, should you wish to make any exclusions. 32. To apply any filters to your report or change any settings, click on the filter icon from the similarity toolbar. 33. Use the radio and text boxes to determine which exclusions should apply to your similarity report. You can filter matches by words or by percentage. For example, filtering by 10 words will exclude all matches that are less than 10 words long. Alternatively, select the Don't exclude by size option

12 34. If you would prefer not to see color coded matches within your report, you can deactivate this feature by un-checking the Multi-color Highlighting box. This will mean that all matches will be now be highlighted in one block color. 35. To save your filters and/or settings, click the Apply Changes button. 36. Click the X icon in the top right-hand corner of the Filters & Settings side panel to close the full panel.
