2 Turnitin is a web subscription service that doesn't need any software installation. The service allows to analyse the originality of any kind of work (bachelor/master thesis, doctoral dissertation, other works required by the courses, etc.). The plagiarism search engine compares the words of any work that is uploaded to the system and those indexed within the Turnitin database, in order to identify and evaluate possible cases of plagiarism. The database is made up of all the documents published on the web and from various databases of scientific publications. A) ACCOUNT ACTIVATION Check if a "Welcome to Turnitin" was sent to your University's Inbox. This means that your name has been entered in a class ("Dottorato" in the example). Log in by clicking on "Log in Now". You must create a profile at the first entry to the site.

3 Create your profile: on the first screen, select "Student".

4 Subsequently, provide all the required information

5 Conclude the procedure by accepting the Terms of Use. Upon registration, the PhD candidate accesses his Turnitin account, where he is attributed to a class ("Dottorato" in the example) and to an assignment (his thesis in the example)

6 B) UPLOAD AN ASSIGNMENT 1) Click on the class name. You can upload your work only if your supervisor has already set up an assignment, otherwise contact him for information. 2) Click on Submit 3) Upload the file choosing between the following modes: Uploading a single file: fill the required fields, choose the file you want to upload by browsing the folders on your PC, Dropbox or Google Drive. Click on Upload. Cut & paste: upload a file by copying and pasting directly in the specific box 5) Confirm the upload of the file by clicking on Confirm 6) Return to the home screen by clicking Return to the list of assignments 7) You can download a receipt of the assignment by clicking on the arrow on the right of the screen. C) VISUALISATION OF THE ORIGINALITY REPORT The system compares the words of your work and those indexed within the Turnitin database in order to identify and evaluate possible cases of plagiarism. At the end of the analysis, it will appear the percentage of similarity of the loaded document with the sources in the system database. 1) Click on the Report icon ( Similarity, the colored box on the right of the percentage), The report will be opened in a new window called Document Viewer. In the right of the screen,

7 the default view mode ( Overview of text matches ) lists the sources that are most similar to the analysed text. 2) To display the sections that have a percentage of words equal to the indicated sources, you can click on the source indicated on the right of the screen, highlighted with the same colour in the analysed text. The occurrences of the same source can be browsed by clicking on the arrows that appear at the bottom of the list displayed on the right. To compare the text of the submitted and highlighted work with the text of the source, you can click on the highlighted part. By clicking on "Full Source View", a pop-up will be opened with the text displayed in full.
