SEARCHING CINAHL, MEDLINE and using REFWORKS (We are currently having problems with Explorer and Chrome, it is easier to use Firefox) From the Student Home Pages select the Library link on the left side of the screen. Select Search a database from the options listed under I want to... FINDING CINAHL Select CINAHL by clicking Databases beginning with C, then clicking CINAHL. Click the link starting Access to all resources You now have the option of searching all the databases at once - but there are advantages in searching each relevant database individually, so only select CINAHL and Continue. USING YOUR QUESTION Derive your keywords from your question. Our question is How has radiography been used in the treatment of cancer in the last five years We have been told to include the findings of evidence-based research in our answer. The first step is to derive and list keywords. The question gives us radiography and cancer. From our studies we know of other possible keywords like, radiology, diagnostic imaging, oncology. We will start with radiography and cancer as search terms USING CINAHL The best way to search is to search for each of the keywords separately. This will give us a series of sets of references. We then link the relevant sets using the appropriate Boolean operators (and, or, not) First search term It is easier to control the search if you search with your keywords one at a time. When you enter the keyword (), you can make the search more precise by selecting the Suggest Subject Terms option () Running a subject term search displays a list of subheadings, this lets you select all or any relevant subheadings from the list by ticking on the box beside them.
Once you have clicked on your selected terms, then click Search Database. An alternative way of using subheadings is to click on the term itself which is a hyperlink, opens the hierarchic tree structure. From here you can select from among broader or narrower terms Second search term Now we search for the second term Cancer, search for it in the same way as we did for the first terms. In this case CINAHL suggests a different term, Neoplasms. We can select this. If you also want to include your original keyword, look at the bottom of the list you will see it displayed there. You can use this instead of, or as well as the suggested term. To select both terms, first select the keyword, in this case cancer. Then click on the suggested term Neoplasms. This is a hyperlink which opens the neoplasms tree, from which you can select the subheading neoplasm. You then click Search Database. Combining the first and second search terms We now have to separate sets of records S and S. Select them both and search for the records in both sets by searching with AND
This gives us our first set of records. Refining the search We can focus the search further by selecting from among the options, Source Types, Subject and so on, on the search results page. But the Show More () option opens up additional ways to refine the search. For instance, we can limit the search to Evidence-base practice () in the last five years () This focuses the set of records dramatically. We can now do a similar search with our other terms. SWITCHING TO MEDLINE We can also use these terms on other likely databases like MEDLINE (CINAHL and MEDLINE are provided to the GCU by the same company so it is easy to move over to Medline.)
.Select Choose Databases. Remove tick from CINAHL, tick MEDLINE and click OK. You are now in MEDLINE. TIP : Click on Search History and your search history will display allowing you the option to RERUN your search strings within another database like MEDLINE EXPORTING TO REFWORKS RefWorks will save your records and help you create a bibliography Click Add to folder. Do this for a number of records. Click Folder View. The contents of your folder is displayed. Click Export. The export manager is displayed 4. Click Direct export to RefWorks. 4
4 You can see your saved records by logging on to RefWorks. Go to the Welcome to the Library pages, select Search a database then select RefWorks from the list. CINAHLPLUSoct 5
