SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH FOR LAWYERS With Elisabeth McKechnie
LAW LIBRARY/SHIELDS DATABASES Academic Search Complete (full text) Business Source Complete (full text) EconLit (abstracts only) PsycInfo/PsycArticles (abstracts/full text) Social Science Citations (abstracts only)
Full text versus abstracts only Full text has the document available, usually PDF format, but not always. Full text is generally available, but database as a whole is limited. Abstracts Only have an abstract, citation and other information but NOT full text article. They are considered Index databases. Covers more ground because the files are smaller and there are more of them. Goes back farther in time and broader in coverage.
BUILDING A SEARCH
USE AN INDEX IF YOU HAVE ONE!
Index--Alpha list of search terms guides you to subject
An Index will send you from a bad search term to a good one. A keyword search is only as good as your knowledge of the subject matter! Most databases search only the words you give it Limited vocab = limited results
Keyword Search blues All are possible keywords describing a child at law: Minor Infant Juvenile Child Parent & Child

I want a bass.
Use the right words to find the right things
SEARCH BETTER? USE BOOLEAN!
No, Really it isn t that bad Apples AND oranges BOTH ONLY WHEN THEY APPEAR TOGETHER EXCLUDES APPLE ONLY, ORANGE ONLY Apples OR oranges EITHER- BIGGER RESULT (Apples OR oranges) /10 fruit- either term within 10 words of the word fruit [proximity search] Fruit AND NOT oranges--- everything except oranges [exclusion]
Some complex examples of PROXIMITY search c/o Lexis & Westlaw (study or studies or statistics) /10 (adr or "dispute resolution) /20 states client /5 (happy or satisf!) /20 empiric! (adr or "dispute resolution") /10 (study or studies or statistics) /20 states
KW Searching for studies or empirical data EMPIRIC! or EMPIRICAL STUDY (no truncation or you ll get student) Survey or longitudinal (or other terms for specific types of studies) Most online DB s don t have proximity, so use AND/OR/NOT (study or studies or empiric!) and (refer or find or hire) and (lawyer or attorney or counsel)
