2 SEARCH the ONLINE CATALOG for BOOKS, VIDEOS, and DVDs On the Library web page, click on Gateway Online Catalog. When you enter the catalog, you will be at the search screen. Type your search term(s) in the text box. Search Tips: enter words relating to your topic, use quotes to search phrases: "world wide web", use + to mark essential terms: +explorer, use * to mark important terms: *internet, use? to truncate: browser? The Results list gives you the location (which library, which collection, call number) and the availability status of the item, or if it is an electronic resource, a link to the web site. Click on the Title of the item if you are interested in finding out more information about it. If the item is located at another campus, print the brief record and take it to library staff to order through intercampus van delivery (takes 2-3 working days, no cost to you) To print, save or the results of your search, see Record Options at the bottom of the page. You can LIMIT your search to one campus or one format. Ideas for Sample searches: Stem cell research, freedom of speech, Internet, mass media, prisons, parenting, Wal-mart, abortion, prison reform, drug abuse, Iraq war, terrorism, global warming, teen pregnancy Try these phrases to get a list of books on controversial issues: Opposing Viewpoints or Current Controversies or At Issue. Remember to use the quotation marks around the phrase. To search the catalog of other colleges and public libraries, click on the MultiLibrary Search button. Under Other Library Catalogs you will find links to Kenosha Public Library, Racine Public Library, Carthage College Library, UW-Parkside Library, and the Lakeshores Library System (Walworth County). WISCAT is a combined catalog of Wisconsin libraries. You can Request this item online, or ask a Librarian to do it for you. NetLibrary Electronic Books is a fulltext collection of Page 2 of 5

3 Finding Articles in Magazines & Journals WHAT IS A PERIODICAL DATABASE? It is an electronic collection of periodicals. It may include the full text of articles or only indexed citations. Some collections are broad in scope; others may be subject-specific. Gateway Technical College provides free access to over 30 databases, covering journals, many available in full text. Why use a Database? Why not just use the Internet? There is no quality control over what is posted on the Internet. If you are looking for information that is reliable and professionally reviewed, you don t want articles that are trying to sell you something! You may be asked to pay for journal articles on the Internet. Gateway can supply them free of charge! What Databases are available to Gateway students? And how do I choose which one to use? Search for a subject word or phrase, or select from the list of available topics. On the Library home page, under Databases (Articles) select Gale Group, then Opposing Viewpoints. Follow LOGIN instructions! NOTE: You can limit your search to only Academic Journals, News, Multimedia, or to Websites. Advanced Search Page 3 of 5

4 Select a full text article from the Results List. Look in the left column for related subject terms. Click on the link directly beneath the title called How to Cite, or on Full-text to read the article. Each article will argue one side of a controversial issue. Read several articles to understand both positions and be better able to present the reasons for your position. Search WilsonWeb for Journal Articles WilsonWeb is 100% full text. Login by typing your student ID number. (The gtc preface is not used in WilsonWeb. You can limit by Date of publication, or by Peer Reviewed. ALL articles are full text! RESULTS: Results can be printed, ed, or saved. You can also listen to the article. Click on Cite for a copy of the MLA citation. Click on the article title for a summary of the article, links to the full text, and a link to the MLA citation. Page 4 of 5

5 MLA FORMAT FOR BOOKS AND WEB PAGES: At the Library web page, look for Electronic Resources, then click on CITATION STYLES The Landmarks Son of Citation Machine will format the citation for you in APA format if you fill in the information. Select APA format on the left, then choose the kind of resource you are using. You can also look at examples of MLA citations at the University of Wisconsin Madison Writing Center web page. help.
