ViewRanger Editions in itunes ViewRanger can be bought and installed from the Apple app store. It is compatible with the iphone. Two editions are available: Open Maps includes access to Open Street and Cycle mapping. Premium as well as access to Open Street and Cycle mapping, includes 1000 credits with which to download premium mapping of 13 different countries (or 600 sq km of Norway). You can buy premium mapping within the app using either edition. You can also use maps that you bought for ViewRanger on other types of phone in both editions. ipad & iphone ViewRanger runs on both the iphone and the ipad. Where we refer to the iphone, the same applies to the ipad. The ipad has a split screen where the Organizer occupies the left of the screen, the map occupies the rest. 3

Using ViewRanger When you start ViewRanger you'll be prompted to choose a default country. Select one then an overview map will be downloaded then displayed. The Open Maps edition will show an Open Street map of the world. There are two ways to obtain more maps use ViewRanger's downloads, or use the wifi interface. Map Interaction To pan around the map drag it with your finger. You can zoom in and out of the map by pinching or using the zoom buttons. You can also zoom in by double tapping, and zoom out by doing a single two finger tap. As you zoom in and out ViewRanger will change the scale of map displayed to best match the current zoom. Map view includes fixed visible cross-hair at the centre of the screen, together with numeric coordinate on display and an on-screen map scale bar. 4

Buttons There are buttons at the bottom of the map screen and buttons that appear in context. They may disappear after a short time, tap the screen and they reappear. The buttons are: The Organizer is where you manage your maps, routes, tracks and points-of-interest. You can also access settings and help. The ViewRanger store can be used to download both free and paid for maps and other content. The Menu button shows a context sensitive menu, which contains things you can do in the map window. With nothing selected it allows you to create a point-of-interest or a route; to search for routes; or download a map tile. If you select a point, route or track it contains commands that apply to the selected item such as Details (which shows a description of the item) and edit commands. The GPS button starts using the GPS. It moves the map to be centred on your GPS location. The map will follow your GPS location. If you move the map using the screen the map will stop moving with the GPS location, but the GPS location will still move across the map. Use the Zoom in button to zoom in on the centre of the map, or where you last selected. You can also zoom in by stretching (reverse pinch), or by double tapping. The Zoom out button zooms out to show more of the map. It may also change map scale. You can also zoom out by pinching or by doing a single two finger tap. The Done / Complete button is shown while you are creating or editing a route or point-of-interest. Press the Done button to return to the normal mode. The Delete button is shown while creating a route. This button deletes the last waypoint you placed, and can be used repeatedly. Add waypoints when creating a route, you can toggle between panning the map and adding waypoints. This button switches to adding waypoints. Pan map - when creating a route, you can toggle between panning the map and adding waypoints. This button switches to panning the map. Handle Select a POI or a Route waypoint. If you need to modify its position then press and drag this button image. If the POI/Waypoint is locked, then this image will not be displayed. 5

Menu The Menu button shows a list of commands. The commands listed vary according to what you are doing and what is selected. If nothing is selected then you can choose to create a route or POI, record a track, Types of Map ViewRanger supports two types of map: Online maps such as those from Open Street and Cycle Map. These maps are downloaded automatically as and when they are needed. They are cached on the phone, so if you preview them before going out you can use them in an area with no mobile signal. Premium maps more detailed maps, typically from national mapping agencies such as Ordnance Survey, IGN, BKG or from National Geographic. These maps contain more detail but are charged for. You choose which tiles to download and will be prompted to buy top-up credit when needed. These maps are stored on the phone so can be used when away from the mobile network. 6

GPS Press the GPS button to start using the GPS. The map will jump to be centred on the current GPS location. A circle and cross are shown to indicate the GPS location, which is red when the GPS is giving an accurate position, and grey when the GPS position is not accurate. The map will move with the GPS location, keeping the GPS indicator central. If you pan the map by dragging it, the GPS lock will be disengaged. The GPS position will still be shown and recorded. To reengage the GPS lock press the GPS button again. The GPS can be disconnected by pressing the Menu button and choosing Disconnect GPS, using the switch in settings or by closing the app. When you are moving an arrow will be drawn showing your heading, with its length is proportional to speed. Control this in settings. Map auto rotate can be switched on in settings. This rotates the map by multiples of 90 degrees, to best match your heading. Tracks A track records a walk or ride, it's a list of points and times. By default ViewRanger records a track whenever the GPS is connected, but you can stop this by pressing the Menu button record track', or using Settings. and choosing 'Stop The track is drawn as a black line (red when selected) with regular arrow markings. The arrows are spaced every 5 minutes. If it has been less than 60 minutes since the last track was being recorded, ViewRanger will ask if you wish to create a new track or extend current track. If it has been more than 60 minutes since the last track was being recorded, ViewRanger will hide that previous track and start a new one. All the values mentioned above can be controlled in Settings. Status Icons 3 status icons are shown in the coordinate location bar at the top of the screen. GPS the satellite dish icon indicates ViewRanger is using the GPS. If the icon is flashing the GPS does not have an accurate position fix. If the icon is solid the GPS fix is accurate Track the footstpes icon indicates whether a track is being recorded. Beacon the circles and red arrow indicate the buddy beacon is transmitting, receiving or both. See page 24 for more on the buddy beacon. 7

Compass If your iphone contains an electronic compass, you can see the compass displayed in two ways. Compass showing north The compass can show the direction that is north. It shows this using a red arrow on the GPS button. To switch on this type of compass go to Organizer > Settings > Map settings and switch on Compass. The arrow points north, so you can use it like a clip on compass to orient yourself and the map. When the arrow is pointing straight up the map is aligned with the real world. If the compass arrow goes grey it means the compass reading is not accurate. Move away from any metal or electrical equipment. Compass showing facing direction The compass can show on the map the direction you are facing. It does this by drawing an arrow on the outside of the GPS location circle. If the arrow points east, it means the phone is pointing east. To switch on this type of compass go to Organizer > Settings > Map settings and switch on HUD Compass. (HUD stands for heads up display.) The arrow should be red. If the arrow goes grey it means the compass reading is not accurate. Move away from any metal or electrical equipment. Auto Rotate Map and Compass If the map is set to auto rotate (Organizer > Settings > Map settings), then as long as one or other compass is switched on the map will rotate by multiples of 90 degrees to best match the compass direction. 8

Routes A route is a list of waypoints, which mark out a planned trip. To create a route press the Menu button then 'Create route'. As you tap the screen a waypoint is added to the route, which you can drag to where it is needed. If you tap on the last placed waypoint you can move it, otherwise the next tap adds another waypoint. Press the handle button to select and position waypoints. To delete the last waypoint press the Delete button repeatedly.. You can use this When the route is complete press the Done button. If you need to pan the map without dropping a point, press the Pan map button. You can then move the map as normal. To return to creating waypoints press the Add waypoint button. To combine tiles into single maps, go to Organizer > Maps. Tap on a map tile and then tap Optimise tiles in the top left. You'll see a progress bar as map tiles close to this one are combined into a single map. 17

Online Mapping ViewRanger can display free online mapping from Open Street Map and Open Cycle Map. The maps are downloaded automatically as they are needed and are then cached on the phone. If the mobile network is not available, or if you choose to work offline, then ViewRanger will display as much of the map as it can using the cached tiles. Choose Organizer, Maps then select Online maps. You will be presented with a list of online map sources to select from. (If you do not see the list of Online maps, go first to Organizer > ViewRanger store, allow the list to update, then go back to Maps.) To use the maps simply pan and zoom, map tiles are downloaded as you need them. Here are some samples: Maps in screen grabs 2010 Cloudmade or Open Cycle Map. Map data CCBYSA OpenStreetMap.org contributors. Terms of Use 18

Online Map Settings Choose Organiser, select Settings and then Online maps. Online when switched on, ViewRanger downloads map tiles as they are needed using the wifi or mobile internet connection. When switched off, ViewRanger will only display maps that are already found within the Map cache. Map cache size - set the size in (MB) of the downloaded map cache. This is the maximum space the cached map tiles can use. Once the cache is filled the oldest tiles will be deleted to make space. Clear tiles and Clear map cache - used to explicitly clear the map cache when required. Maps older than the specified number of days will be erased. (Note: this operation cannot be undone.) Routes, Tracks and POIs Routes, tracks and points of interest created when viewing online maps are separate to those used for premium maps (except for USA maps, where they are the same). So for example, a route or POI set shown on a premium map, won't be visible on the online map and vice versa. This is because the two maps use different coordinate spaces. We will remove this restriction in a future release. Also note that if you swap between online and non-online maps while recording a track, the track will be split into parts and the whole won't be visible (Note: You can move routes, tracks and POIs between the maps by saving them to a GPX file, swapping to the other type of map, then re-importing the GPX file). Coordinate Entry To enter coordinates manually, press the top location bar that displays the current map location coordinates. Tapping on the active coordinate type displays a selection list of coordinate types Note: If a particular coordinate type is greyed-out then it cannot be used in the active country. When creating a POI or a Route Waypoint, you can use to specify the coordinates manually. button option To modify the location of existing POI(s) and Waypoint(s), use the Properties view and the Set position option. 19

Import / Export There are two methods for copying maps and other files onto the device; wifi web interface and itunes file sharing. With itunes being the preferred method (see section below). The import / export section gives access to: The wifi web interface for installing maps bought for another phone and for importing and exporting GPX files. GPX import and export. File browser for checking the ViewRanger content on your phone. Wifi Web Interface You will find it easier to use itunes to copy maps and other files onto the device (see section below) but these wifi instructions are given as an alternative method. To start the wifi web interface go to Organizer, then to Import / Export. Switch on Wifi file access. A URL will appear below the switch. Type this into a web browser. Note the whole URL is needed, including the http: and the :8080. You'll then see a web form from where you can upload maps, GPX files and icons. Your iphone's UDID will be shown on this form too. Troubleshooting If the form does not appear then carefully check the URL. You need the whole URL, including the http and the :8080. If the URL is correct then check the firewall settings on both the router and the computer permit access. Failing that please check the wiki via for more tips and also note you can try the itunes File Sharing Interface instead. 20

Web Form The three links, GPX, Icons and Maps, allow you to list the content on the phone. The 'Upload map or GPX file' section allows you to upload new content. The supported files are.vrc (Colour maps);.vrh (height/altitude);.gpx (points, routes, tracks);.loc (points). Also.ZIPs containing a number of the other files. The 'Upload icon' section allows you to add new custom icons. Any bitmap format supported by the iphone will do but small PNGs are best. Choose a file to upload by pressing the 'Browse...' button (this varies depending on your web broswer). Then press the 'Upload' button. While transferring a file a progress bar is shown on the phone. After transferring a map you'll need to enter a license key using Organizer > Account & License. To request a license key contact support with you iphone's UDID. The UDID is shown at the bottom of the web form. When a GPX file is sent you'll be told what is in the file, so you can confirm installation. The file is also available in the Files browser for later import. 21

itunes File Sharing Interface The itunes files sharing interface for installing maps bought for another phone and for importing and exporting GPX files. It shows a basic window of the root level only of the ViewRanger home folder on the device. It show the files and sub-folders in the home folder but not the contents of sub-folders. You can import individual and multiple files but not folders. You can export files and sub-folders. You can also delete items with the delete key on your computer but care should be taken with this. Connect device to computer with USB cable and open itunes. In itunes, on left, click your device. Click the Apps tab and scroll down to 'File Sharing'. Click on ViewRanger in the App list and, after a few moments, the ViewRanger home folder is displayed under 'Premium Documents' window. Use the 'Add' button to import maps and files and the 'save to' to export files. If you imported a zip file, then this must be manually un-zipped; open ViewRanger application on the device and select Organizer > Import / export > Documents and click the zip, then Import ZIP/VRZ. Lastly, in the ViewRanger application on the device, select Organizer > Import / export and Load new data. This is not required if you just un-packed a ZIP file Files The Files section of Import / export allows you to browse and manage the ViewRanger files on your phone. GPX Support If you select a GPX file you can use the filtered import options for example, you can import just the tracks in a GPX file. If you use 'Import routes' to import a file containing just waypoints, you'll be offered the chance to import the points as a route. 22

You can export GPX files in 2 ways: On the Import / export panel the Export all to GPX' button saves all POIs, routes and tracks to a GPX file. 'Export visible to GPX' exports just the items that are visible, that is have not been hidden. Each route, track and POI in the Organizer has an 'Export item to GPX' button, allowing you to save that individual item. 23

Buddy Beacon The buddy beacon allows you to share your location with other people. They can see your position by entering your user name and your PIN number on a web page. The buddy beacon also allows you to watch/track other people on your device. You can see their last reported position by entering the user name and PIN number. You can also watch multiple beacons simultaneously. If you need to add/modify the active watch list then choose Buddy & tracker list. To use the buddy beacon you need to have registered and entered your account details. Do this using Organizer, then Account & license. Control the buddy beacon by going to Organizer, then BuddyBeacon. Beacon send on/off The switch at the top switches the buddy beacon on and off. When it is on the beacon reports your position regularly, as long as the GPS has a position fix. The frequency controls how often the beacon is sent. Use Add buddy to enter the name and PIN of a buddy to watch. Buddy Watch / track on/off This switch controls this feature and displays the frequency which controls how often the beacons are watched. Send beacon now this sends a single immediate beacon report, using either the centre of the map, or the GPS position, as the beacon location. Beacon Settings use this section to control BuddyBeacon. Beacon PIN enter a 4 digit PIN. This should be a number that you are happy to tell those you want to see your location. To change the PIN simply type a different number here and transmit the beacon. Update frequency controls how often the beacon is sent and or receive latest position, if enabled. When set to 2 minutes the beacon will be sent and or received every 2 minutes. Auto start beacon if this is switched on, then ViewRanger will start transmitting the beacon as soon as ViewRanger starts. Send old positions normally ViewRanger only records and shows the last position sent. Some people prefer it to show a history, which can be enabled using This switch tells ViewRanger that if it can't send a position report because there is no mobile network coverage, it should keep that position and send it when there is network coverage. This avoids gaps in trails in the buddy beacon view. Location bar icon while the beacon is transmitting it shows an icon in the coordinates bar at the top of the screen. The red arrow pointing outwards. While the beacon is receiving it shows an icon in the coordinates bar at the top of the screen. The red arrow pointing inwards. While the beacon is transmitting and receiving the red arrow points both outwards and inwards of the circle icon. 24

Buddy watch / track Buddy list Once you have added at least one Buddy you can use the Buddy list. The watch list should contain a valid list of beacons to watch/track. You have the option to turn-off/on individual beacon buddies. There are two options to observe a buddy. Watch/track enables watch activation. Once you have made your selection, you can go to back the top level menu and switch On/Off Watch track. The Locate now feature, provides a single immediate buddy location fix. [ Note: Locate now option does not require Watch/track to be switched on ] Buddy Beacon Add Buddy You can Watch or Locate multiple buddies within the watch list. To add a new buddy you will require a username and their 4 digit PIN number. Buddy Watch Country Change Note: if the located buddy is outside the bounds of the active coordinate/country system, ViewRanger does not change to show that country - you need to do that yourself using the Organizer's Maps list. Buddy Beacon Web Page To see the location of a buddy, go to Enter the user name and PIN, then press locate. You'll see a map showing the buddy location. Hover the cursor over the location to see the time and date details. Retrieva Dog Collar A buddy can be a Retrieva dog collar. The collar needs to be reporting its position using GPRS (not SMS), and you need to have set it up as a ViewRanger buddy using the Retreiva panel. Retrieva will be providing details. 25

Audio and Video Content Some routes and waypoints have links to audio or video content, you can also add your own links to any description. To play the video or audio simply tap on the link in the Details view. If the content is video then it will be played using the iphone's video player. Press Back to return to ViewRanger. If the content is audio it will be played within ViewRanger. A row of controls is shown. You can interact with ViewRanger as normal, for example return to the map view. The controls provided are: Stop stops playing and closes the controls. Restart go back to the beginning. Step back / forward step backward or forward a couple of seconds, press repeatedly for for jumps. Pause / play pause the playing or resume where it was paused. If you are following a route, or navigating to a point, and have alarms enabled then the sound or video will be automatically triggered when you reach the point. See the following navigation section for details. 26

Navigation ViewRanger will help you navigate to a point or follow a route. To follow a route or navigate towards a specific point of interest or waypoint, either: Go to Organizer, find the item and tap on it. Choose Follow route or Navigate to, or Select the item on the map, press the Menu button Navigate to. and choose Follow route or Map Display While Navigating While navigating an arrow is shown in the top left. The arrow indicates the direction you should travel relative to your current direction of travel. Aim to keep it pointing straight upwards. Tap the arrow to see a menu of commands that control navigation. The colour of the arrow varies: Red when you are close to the target (red for stop) Blue if you are too far off route (blue for getting cold) Green if you are on route and not yet at the target (green for go) A dotted line is drawn between the GPS position and the target point. Circles are drawn around the target and the alarm trigger point, the circle size showing the alarm trigger distances. Alarms ViewRanger has two different alarms: POI / Waypoint Arrival Alarm this alarm is triggered when you reach your target point or the next waypoint. The trigger distance is set in the GPS & navigation section of Settings. If the distance is set to 50 metres, then the alarm will trigger when you are within 50 metres of the target. XTE (Cross Track Error) Alarm this alarm is triggered if you deviate too far from the route. The trigger distance is set in the GPS & navigation section of Settings. If the distance is set to 100 metres, then the alarm will trigger if you are more than 100 metres from the route. You can switch the two alarms off individually. When an alarm has been triggered a warning message is shown and your chosen sound played every 10 seconds. You can silence an alarm by pressing the navigation arrow and choosing Silence alarm or pressing stop on the floating sound controls. 27

The colour of the navigation arrow changes when the alarm is triggered red indicates arrival and blue indicates off route. The blue box is the cross track error boundary. If you go outside this box, the cross track error alarm will sound and the arrow will go blue The pink circle is the arrival alarm once you enter the circle the alarm sounds and the navigation arrow is drawn red 1 2 1st waypoint Choosing the alarm tone Choose the alarm tone or sound in the GPS & navigation section of Settings. There are separate settings for the Arrival alarm and for the Cross track error alarm. You can choose any sound, tone, MP3 or music track. You can record and use your own sound. Sound and Video Links You can add a sound or video link to a waypoint or POI and it will be played when you first reach that point. In the description type using the format: <sound SoundFile.wav>Description</sound> This will appear as underlined text Description, which you can click on to play the sound file SoundFile.wav. This sound will be played once when you first reach the POI or waypoint. After being played the alarm will switch to the usual alarm tone until silenced. You could record a short description, which is played as you reach a point, or could have a special sound. This link is saved into GPX files and is imported from GPX files, if you prepare routes elsewhere. Videos can be embedded using the link format: <link href= video.3gp >Video</link> To be played as an alarm the video must further be surrounded by alarm tags, which can also be added around sounds: <alarm><link href= video.3gp >Video</link></alarm> 28

Route Navigation Settings There are three settings that control navigation. All are set in the GPS & navigation section of settings. 1. Arrival alarm distance - the distance at which the arrival alarm sounds and the navigation arrow turns red. This is the grey outer circle in the picture. 2. Cross track error (XTE) alarm distance - if you go more than this distance away from the route the cross track error alarm sounds and the navigation arrow turns blue. This is shown as the dotted line. 3. Show next waypoint distance - when you reach this distance away from the waypoint you are considered to have arrived at the waypoint. The navigation arrow will now point at the next waypoint on the route, so you know where to go next. This is shown as the red inner circle. The arrival alarm will still sound, so you know you are at the waypoint. Navigation Commands These commands are shown when you tap the navigation arrow: Silence alarm - silences the alarm. It won't sound again until it is triggered by a new event - for example, arriving at the next waypoint. Step target forward / backward - set the target waypoint to be the waypoint one later or one earlier in the route. Sometimes your location will cause this to have no visible effect - in which case you can switch off auto following and set the target manually. Auto follow on / off - toggle automatic route following on and off. If it is off then you need to manually advance the target waypoint using step target forward. Reset follow route - resets the automatic route following to start from the first waypoint. Note that if you are closer to another route section it will use that section of route. Stop navigate - stop navigating. 29

Following a route 1. Starting at the first point on the route the navigation arrow will point at the second point. As long as you stay on route, that is you don't trigger the cross track error alarm (so are within the dotted lines on the previous page), the navigation arrow will continue to point at the second waypoint. 2. When you reach the grey outer circle, the arrival alarm will trigger. The navigation arrow will turn red, but it will still point at the second waypoint. 3. When you reach the red inner circle you are considered to have arrived at the second waypoint. This waypoint is marked as achieved and won t be targeted again. The navigation arrow will now point at the third waypoint. The arrival alarm continues to sound until you pass the current waypoint - that is you are closer to the next leg of the route. 4. You are now navigated to the third waypoint. Once you have arrived at a waypoint that waypoint is marked as achieved. ViewRanger won't consider that waypoint again, or any before it. However, you can override that with menu commands. Even if you now go backwards towards waypoint 1 the navigation arrow will still point at waypoint 3. You can however change this by pressing the navigation arrow and choosing Step target backwards. 30

Detail of what happens as you reach the waypoint As you reach the waypoint there are two target distances involved. The navigation arrow points to the next waypoint. In the diagram below, as you go from waypoint number 1 to waypoint 2, the arrow points towards waypoint 2. Once you enter the inner circle (yellow), the navigation arrow shows the direction to the third waypoint The outer circle (pink) is the arrival alarm once you enter the circle the alarm sounds and the navigation arrow is drawn red When you reach the arrival alarm distance, the pink outer circle, the arrival alarm will sound if you have it enabled. The distance given by Show next wpt distance controls the distance at which ViewRanger will consider you to have arrived at a waypoint. It is shown as the inner yellow circle in the diagram below. Once you reach this distance from a waypoint, the navigation arrow will start pointing to the following waypoint. So in the diagram, when you reach the inner circle the navigation arrow will start pointing at waypoint 3. Its default value is 15m. If you have alarms enabled, the arrow will still be red while you are within the alarm distance. Going off route If you go off route by more than the cross track distance, ViewRanger will re-evaluate where you are. If it finds that you are closer to a later leg of the route it will direct you along that leg. It gives preference to the earlier route legs. However, if you return to your route it will revert to directing you to the next waypoint. It will never consider route legs prior to a waypoint that you passed through and was marked as achieved, as long as that waypoint was achieved in correct order. 31

Route Navigation Troubleshooting The most important setting is the Show next wpt distance. This defaults to 15 metres. If you find that the navigation arrow points to the subsequent waypoint too soon then reduce this setting. If you find the navigation arrow pointing backwards as you pass the waypoint then increase the value. On a 1:50,000 scale map 15 metres is a circle 6 pixels across and on a 1:25,000 scale map it is 12 pixels across. The cross track error distance is also important. For example, if you short cut a corner the navigation arrow will point at the waypoint you are missing until you are more than the cross track distance off the route. So if you often short cut corners, keep the cross track error distance quite low. The arrival alarm distance only determines when the arrival alarm starts sounding. Normally you want the alarm to sound as you approach a waypoint, so keep this setting greater than the next waypoint distance. Manual Route Navigation You can also manually select waypoints to navigate towards, rather than using the automatic method described above. To navigate to a specific waypoint first select the waypoint, then press the Menu button and choose Navigate to. Once you have chosen to navigate to a particular waypoint you can step forward or backward using the Navigate arrow menu s Step target forward or Step target backward commands. You can start using the automatic route following using the Navigate menu s Auto follow route on command. 32

Settings GPS switches the GPS on and off. Show overlay switches the overlay (POIs, routes and tracks) display on and off. Switch off the overlay to see the map on its own. Account & license use this section to create and manage your ViewRanger server account, and to activate new maps. Track settings this section controls the recording and display of tracks. Map settings this section contains other map and interface related settings. Account & license The account section allows you to create and manage your ViewRanger server account. This keeps track of your map purchases, and is used to support features such as the buddy beacon. You can create a new account; enter the details of an existing account or test the account with account sign in; change your password; or request a new password be ed to you. The license section allows you to activate maps you already own, having bought for another phone or from a retailer. Track settings Record track switch recording a track on and off. Note that the GPS must also be connected for the track to be recording. Track minimum distance the minimum spacing between track sample points. If set to 20m, a point will only be added to the track when you are 20m or more away from the previous point. Small values lead to a detailed track, big values to a less detailed track. Avoid values that are too small as they record all the natural GPS fluctuation, and avoid large values as they lead to missed corners. Track minimum time the minimum time between samples. If set to 10 seconds a point will only be added if it has been 10 seconds or more since the last sample. Track split time used when you start recording a track, this settings is used to decide whether to start a brand new track or extend the last one. At the default value of 60 minutes, if it has been 60 minutes or less since the last track was recorded, ViewRanger will extend that track. If it has been more than 60 minutes it will start a new track. 33

Track mark time regularly space arrows are drawn along the track. This setting controls how far apart they are, the default is 5 minutes. Slide the slider to zero to switch them off. Map settings Auto scale as you zoom in and out, ViewRanger changes the scale of the map displayed to best suite the the zoom. For example, you may be viewing 1:50,000 map at 50%. Zoom in once and see 1:50,000 at 100%, then zoom in again to see 1:25,000 map at 50%, then again to see it at 100%. This switch stops the auto scale change. Auto rotate map if this is switched on, then as you walk the map will rotate to keep you heading up the screen. The rotation is in multiples of 90 degrees, so your heading won't be straight up. Unit type select the units used for lengths. Choose been metric (metres and km), imperial (feet, yards and miles) and nautical. Coordinate type the format used to display coordinates. You can choose various national grid coordinates (full digit, 10 digit, 8 digit and 6 digit), UTM or various longitude and latitude formats. Proximity screen switch controls whether the screen is locked when the earpiece is covered. A useful way to lock the screen if you put the iphone in and out of your pocket. Compass if you phone contains a compass, display the compass north arrow on the GPS button. HUD Compass if your phone contains a compass, display the direction the phone is pointing on the map, as an arrow on the outside of the GPS location circle. Screen Lock (non multi-tasking enabled iphones) (This section only applies to the iphone 3G, the original iphone, the ipod touch and the ipad. Also any iphone not upgraded to ios 4.) The iphone has limited screen locking abilities if the normal screen lock is applied the GPS will stop running, and wifi will stop. So by default, if you are recording a track, or if you have switched on the wifi web access, ViewRanger disables the screen saver and the screen stays illuminated all the time. There is however an alternative mechanism using the phone's proximity detector. When this is switched on then covering the ear speaker will lock the screen, but leave the GPS running. So you can put it in your pocket, then the screen automatically blanks and locks. Take it out and it automatically unlocks. To switch this on go to Organizer screen switch., then Settings, then Map settings and switch on Proximity Note that some people find this switch triggers unexpectedly, so you may want to switch it off when not needed just brushing in front of the earpiece will trigger it. Screen Lock (multi-tasking enabled iphones) If you have an iphone 4, or if you have a 3GS which you have upgraded to run ios 4, then locking the screen will not stop ViewRanger recording a track or dis-connect GPS. 34

Multi-tasking Support (This section applies to the iphone 4 and the 3GS upgraded to ios 4.) With the new release of iphone firmware version 4 the iphone now has the ability to support multitasking. This helps to stop the loss of GPS signal when another application or event is activated on the iphone. For the iphone to support the ability to multi-task the following prerequisites are required: An iphone model that supports multi-tasking (3GS and 4G for example). iphone firmware release 4 or above. ViewRanger for iphone version or above. Closing ViewRanger When you hide the ViewRanger application on an iphone that supports multi-tasking by pressing the home button, this does not close the application, but puts it into background where it will continue to run and remain active. This means, if you are recording a track, it will continue to record the track and keep the GPS connected. To close the ViewRanger application completely, first press the home button to put ViewRanger into the background. Then double press the home button which brings up the tasks bar. Now long press the ViewRanger icon and a stop sign icon will be displayed on the ViewRanger icon. Press the red stop sign icon to close the ViewRanger application. You can then close the tasks bar by clicking the home button a couple of times. Beware long pressing on the normal application start icon if a black cross appears that will delete the application and maps. Only long press in the task list, and only press the red stop sign icon.
