1 How to Use the Goodreader Application Goodreader version OPEN Goodreader from the ipad HOME SCREEN. The HOME PAGE opens with a screen split into two parts, Left panel and Right panel. The Left Panel displays the FOLDERS and FILES that are currently contained in Goodreader. DOWNLOADS Folder Files that are transferred or up loaded the Goodreader are sent to this folder. Items that are in this folder are NOT sent to the Icloud, so important files should be moved to the HOME PAGE or into HOME PAGE Folders. icloud Folder FOLDERS that contain FILES FILES The Right Panel contains the CONTROLS that are used to manipulate the FOLDERS and FILES Buttons on the Main Screen: File Viewing Format Icons: Sort File Icon Viewing Format Change size of Right Panel Icon Navigation Control: Find Files: TOUCH ENTER the name of the file. Last File: TOUCH with a Circle and an L, the last opened fie will open. Starred Files: TOUCH the STAR, files that have been starred will be listed in the right panel. 5 Managing Folders and Files: Pressing the MANAGE FILES icon allows you to perform the following functions on FOLDERS or FILES. Copy Move Open In Rename Zip Mark Read Star Protect Upload Link Import Photos Flatten Copy New Folder New PDF New Text Creating Folders: Create a folder with the following name: TOUCH the MANAGE FILES icon TOUCH NEW FOLDER TYPE JUNK TOUCH OK. Moving Files from DOWNLOADS Folder: Move the three files you downloaded from the Website to the JUNK folder. GO to the HOME PAGE TOUCH DOWNLOADS, the Downloads folder will open, TOUCH MANAGE FILES icon TOUCH the CIRCLES at the file name TOUCH MOVE TOUCH the JUNK folder TOUCH Move 3 items here Types of Annotations: General: Popup Notes Add Book Marks Look Up (Search) Text: Typewriter Highlight Underline Squiggly Underline Strikeout Text Insertion Mark Text Replacement Mark Graphics: Line Arrow Rectangle Oval Freehand Drawing Annotating Files: Karl Swope + 6/26/14 Page 5

6 In order to annotate files in Goodreader, you have to open either the POPUP MENU or the SIDE MENU bar. POPUP MENU: TOUCH and HOLD any place on the screen or on a specific piece of text. SIDE MENU: TOUCH the center of the screen and the menu bar will open on the right hand side. The PIN icon at the top of the menu is useful, when TOUCHED it will keep the menu open. When you are finished, TOUCH it again. The key to annotating PDF files is PRACTICE and don t be afraid to experiment trying different things. I suggest that you create a separate folder and file to work on so you don t lose any of your important information. While you can move a note or drawing with a popup menu, there s an easier way to do it. TAP and HOLD a note or drawing for a while, then start moving it WITHOUT releasing your finger. Opening Folders and Files: To OPEN a FOLDER or FILE, TOUCH on the FOLDER you want to open and then TOUCH on the FILE. The file will open in another screen. To make the page larger or smaller, use two fingers and spread them apart on the screen. To go back to the HOME PAGE, TOUCH the CENTER of the screen to restore the top menu, and then use the icon at the top of the screen to get back. Annotating a File using Popup Notes: To CREATE a Popup Note: Open file Blue Skies TOUCH and HOLD in a blank spot on the page, the POPUP MENU will open TOUCH icon on the SIDE Bar menu TOUCH at TOP menu TOUCH at DROP DOWN menu, TOUCH the screen A DIALOG BOX will open the FIRST time you annotate a file with the following options: 1. 7 3. Cancel CHOOSE Save to this file a yellow sticky will open TYPE your message TOUCH SAVE. NOTE: The procedure above for placing sticky notes is the same when placing any other type annotation to a file. The DIALOG BOX will appear the FIRST time you annotate a file. To MOVE a Popup Note: TOUCH and HOLD the Popup Note, Without lifting your finger DRAG the note and place where you want it. To EDIT a Popup Note: TOUCH the Popup Note, the note will open EDIT the note TOUCH SAVE To DELETE a Popup Note: TOUCH and HOLD the Popup Note TOUCH DELETE TOUCH Really delete! Annotating a File using Text: To CREATE Text Highlights: Open file More TOUCH and HOLD the text that you wish to Highlight, If you want more than one word DRAG the Resizing Tabs to cover what you want TOUCH icon. To DELETE Text Highlights: TAP the Highlighted area TOUCH DELETE TOUCH Really delete. Use the above procedure to do UNDERLINE SQUIGGLY. To CREATE a TEXT Insertion Mark: Touch and HOLD the text where you want the text insertion mark, (Find the word sy), TOUCH icon, A Note Box will appear TYPE the text that you wish to insert TOUCH SAVE, An Insertion Mark is left next to the text. NOTE: The INSERTED text will NOT appear on the screen. To SEE the inserted text: TOUCH the INSERTION MARK. To DELETE the Insertion Mark: TOUCH and HOLD the Insertion Mark TOUCH Really delete. To CREATE a TEXT Replacement Mark: Touch and HOLD the text where you want the text replacement mark TOUCH icon, A Note Box will appear TYPE the text that you wish replaced TOUCH SAVE, The Text will have a STRIKOUT and Insertion Mark is left next to the text. NOTE: The REPLACED text will NOT appear on the screen. To SEE the replaced text: TOUCH the REPLACEMENT MARK. Karl Swope + 6/26/14 Page 7

8 To DELETE the replacement Mark: TOUCH and HOLD the Insertion Mark TOUCH Really delete TOUCH the STRIKOUT TOUCH DELETE. To CREATE a TEXT STRIKEOUT: TOUCH and HOLD the text that you wish to Highlight, If you want more than one word DRAG the Resizing Tabs to cover what you want TOUCH icon. To DELETE a TEXT STRIKEOUT: TAP the Highlighted area TOUCH DELETE TOUCH Really delete. To ADD text to a file: TOUCH the CENTER of the screen to open the SIDE MENU TOUCH the PIN at the top of the menu, this will keep the menu open TOUCH icon, you have a choice of colors TOUCH the color square if you want to change the color Touch the icon TOUCH icon TOUCH the place on the screen where you want to place the text TOUCH Save to this file, TYPE your text Touch SAVE. To MOVE the text: TOUCH and HOLD, Without lifting your finger DRAG the note and place where you want it TOUCH DONE. To DELETE text: TOUCH and HOLD the text TOUCH DELETE TOUCH Really delete! To CHANGE the text: TOUCH and HOLD the text, you can than make the changes as shown on the menu. To CREATE Boxed Text: Place your text following the above steps, TOUCH and HOLD the text TOUCH BORDER or CLOUDY Touch point size. To REMOVE Boxed Text: TOUCH and HOLD the text TOUCH BORDER or CLOUDY TOUCH OFF. You can MODIFY the text: In the following ways using the above methods: Highlight, Underline, Squiggly Underline, Strikeout, Text Insertion Mark, Text Replacement Mark. NOTE: If you touch BORDER the box will be lines, if you touch CLOUDY the box will be scalloped. Once you place Boxed Text the option will remain for any additional text until to remove it. Annotating a File using Graphics: You can place Lines, Arrows, Rectangles, Ovals and Freehand Drawing by using the same methods employed in annotating text. To ADD a Rectangle to a file: Open file Island in the Sun, TOUCH the CENTER of the screen to open the SIDE MENU TOUCH the PIN at the top of the menu, this will keep the menu open Karl Swope + 6/26/14 Page 8

9 TOUCH TOUCH Color BLUE TOUCH Line Weight 2 pt TOUCH Opacity 50% TOUCH Screen at the word Chorus DRAG Graphic Handles so the Rectangle surrounds the Chorus TOUCH DONE. To ADD an Oval to a file: Open file More, TOUCH the CENTER of the screen to open the SIDE MENU TOUCH TOUCH screen in a blank area DRAG Graphic Handles so the Rectangle to surround the Chorus TOUCH DONE. (The Oval has the same properties as the rectangle unless you change them before you draw it.) To EDIT the Properties: TOUCH and HOLD the OVAL TOUCH 1.5 pt TOUCH and HOLD Color BLUE. To ADD graphics to a file: Open file More, TOUCH the CENTER of the screen to open the SIDE MENU TOUCH the PIN at the top of the menu, this will keep the menu open. TOUCH, You can choose the color, line thickness and Opacity TOUCH TOUCH Draw lines, figures, text or whatever you want to draw TOUCH SAVE. To UNDO, REDO or CANCEL: TOUCH the menu operation at the top of the screen. To ERASE an item: TOUCH TOUCH and MOVE it around the area you wish to erase or cleanup lines Remember to TOUCH SAVE at the end of your work!! Freehand Drawing Zones and Controls: Freehand Drawing: The Freehand Drawing tool can be used to draw Chord Grids quickly. When you get home, you can then go back and clean them up or redraw them grid using the LINE and OVAL tools. The Freehand Drawing tool can work in two different methods. Normal Mode: You simply draw with your finger or a stylus over a PDF page. Special Drawing Mode: You use the Handwriting Zoom Window which allows you to draw tiny details in a large zoomed window, while seeing an overview of an entire page. When doing a freehand drawing in Normal Mode, you can zoom or pan a page with two fingers. It can be useful when creating a long handwritten note that doesn t fit on one screen. The same gesture works in the Markup mode that is activated via the Side Menu s markup buttons Highlight, Underline, etc. Karl Swope + 6/26/14 Page 9

10 All notes, highlights, markups and drawings created outside Goodreader, and properly stored in a PDF file, can be viewed or edited in Goodreader. Drawing a Chord Grid using Freehand Normal Mode: Open file More, TOUCH the CENTER of the screen to open the SIDE MENU TOUCH the PIN at the top of the menu, this will keep the menu open. TOUCH, You can choose the color, line thickness and Opacity TOUCH TOUCH Draw your chord grid in a blank area, you can zoom the screen if you wish by using a TWO finger gesture. You can use slash marks for the notes and write the Chord name at the top of the diagram. When you are finished TOUCH SAVE. I will then STAR the file so I can find it when I get time cleanup the grid or other notes. Remember you can write letters in the Freehand Drawing mode. Another helpful feature is the adjustable Palm Rest zone where you can put your palm while drawing. Buttons to Control Palm Rest: Pinching with two (2) fingers inside the zoom window scales its relative size on a PDF page. PALM REST zone doesn t work well with system Multitasking Gestures (swipes with four (4) fingers to reveal multitasking bar, etc.). When putting your wrist on the palm rest zone, the system will intercept this event and often confuse it with a four finger swipe. If you plan to use the Palm Rest Zone, it is recommended to switch the Multitasking Gestures off in the MAIN device. Drawing a Chord Grid using Special Drawing Mode: Open file More, TOUCH the CENTER of the screen to open the SIDE MENU TOUCH the PIN at the top of the menu, this will keep the menu open. 11 TOUCH to set the PALM REST area TOUCH to adjust the size of the PALM REST area TOUCH Draw your chord grid in a blank area, you can zoom the screen if you wish by using a TWO finger gesture. You can use slash marks for the notes and write the Chord name at the top of the diagram TOUCH this toggles between drawing modes. You will see a WHITE rectangle with a BLUE border at the top LEFT corner of the screen. You can DRAG the rectangle over your grid to get a zoomed in view. By using the you can adjust the position of the zoom window. By using the Drag is arrow to adjust the size of the Auto Advance zone When you are finished TOUCH SAVE. I will then STAR the file so I can find it when I get time cleanup the grid or other notes. Remember you can write letters in the Freehand Drawing mode.
