Administrator s Guide: SYSTRAN Enterprise Workgroup Server SYSTRAN Enterprise Workgroup Server 5.0 Client Software The features of SYSTRAN Enterprise Workgroup Server 5.0 are available over the network to desktop users. Two user interface options the SYSTRAN Enterprise Workgroup Server 5.0 Online Tools and SYSTRAN Enterprise 5.0 Application Packs bring the power of SYSTRAN Enterprise Workgroup Server 5.0 to the individual desktop workstation. ` Corporate Network Client PC SYSTRAN Online Tools SYSTRAN Application Packs SYSTRAN Translation Server SYSTRAN Online Tools SYSTRAN Online Tools provide a Web-based interface to the SYSTRAN Enterprise Workgroup Server 5.0 application over your corporate network. This interface is available as part of the standard implementation of the SYSTRAN Enterprise Workgroup Server 5.0 software. SYSTRAN Application Packs SYSTRAN Enterprise 5.0 Application Packs (User Tools and Expert Tools) are downloadable client software that provides desktop users with access to translation capabilities through plugins in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Internet Explorer). These plugins allow the user to access integrated tools such as a translator s toolkit for post-editing and review, a robust dictionary manager and the ability to perform multiple translations in one operation. The SYSTRAN Enterprise 5.0 Application Packs include the same tools as the SYSTRAN Professional Premium 5.0 desktop product. These features are described in greater detail in the SYSTRAN 5.0 User Guide, available online at: SYSTRAN Application Pack User Tools SYSTRAN User Tools include the SYSTRAN Toolbar and SYSTRAN Clipboard Taskbar. The SYSTRAN Toolbar is automatically displayed in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet Explorer to support rapid and efficient translation of Office documents and Web pages in real-time.

Administrator s Guide: SYSTRAN Enterprise Workgroup Server The SYSTRAN Clipboard Taskbar (SCT) lets users translate text from almost any Windows-based application not supported by the SYSTRAN Toolbar by cutting or copying text to the Windows Clipboard. SYSTRAN Application Pack Expert Tools SYSTRAN Expert Tools provide additional flexibility in planning, managing and completing translation projects. SYSTRAN Translation Project Manager (STPM) allows users to analyze and manage documents from the start of a project, through adding terms to the User Dictionary, processing dictionary updates, and using built-in review and regression tools for quality assurance. These tools include terminology review, analysis of the source (original) document, full sentence review, use of alternate meanings, and other features to automate the post-editing process. SYSTRAN Dictionary Manager (SDM) lets users create and maintain user-defined dictionaries (User Dictionaries) that provide the software with greater understanding and coverage of subject matter. The more terms added to the dictionaries, the higher the coverage of the terminology in the software - and higher coverage yields better quality translation results. SYSTRAN MultiTranslate Utility (SMTU) supports batch processing of multiple translation projects. 44 Administrator s Guide: SYSTRAN Enterprise Workgroup Server Dictionary Management The SYSTRAN Dictionary Manager (SDM) allows users to prioritize their use of the SYSTRAN Dictionaries, and to create and manage the User Dictionaries, Translation Memories and Normalization Dictionaries. User Dictionaries (UDs) allow the user to train the software by adding or editing terms to be considered during translations. UDs can include terms that have specific or unique meanings, such as a company name, or terms specific to a business or industry that are not included in the built-in SYSTRAN Dictionaries or Domains. The more UDs the users create, the greater the software s understanding of the material they are translating. Dictionary resources are maintained on the organization s server. User Dictionaries, Translation Memory and Normalization Dictionaries may be created on client PCs and then uploaded to the server for use.the upload and compilation are automatically completed in background when a dictionary is saved through the SYSTRAN Dictionary Manager. The Administrator configures and manages the development and posting of User Dictionaries to the Enterprise Workgroup Server through the Dictionaries page. This page is available by clicking on the Dictionaries link on each page: Users granted permission by the Administrator can develop and upload User Dictionaries to the Enterprise Workgroup Server through the Dictionary Compilation page. The Administrator can perform the following actions using the Dictionaries page: View currently-available User Dictionaries resident on the server and refresh the dictionary list, as necessary. Change the Public, Shared, and Default status of existing dictionaries. Compile and upload User Dictionaries to the server.

Administrator s Guide: SYSTRAN Enterprise Workgroup Server Dictionary Preferences The Dictionary Preferences page, accessed through the Dictionaries page, allows the user to change: Which dictionaries are included in translations The priority order of dictionaries Which subject domains are used in translations

Administrator s Guide: SYSTRAN Enterprise Workgroup Server Dictionary Administration Dictionaries can be set for personal or public use. They can be edited by a single user or developed by several users in collaboration. When a dictionary is first created or uploaded, it is only available to the user who created it. We refer to this user as the owner of the dictionary. For other users to see the dictionary, the owner can make it Shared or Public or both. See Permissions- Dictionaries (page 25) for more information. The Dictionary Administration page, accessed through the Dictionaries page, allows the Administrator to change the Public, Shared, and Default status of each existing user dictionary. This page is available to users with specific Dictionary administration privileges. See Permissions- Dictionaries (page 25) for more information. Public Shared Default Set the Public attribute of the dictionary to Yes to make a dictionary available for use by others. To allow several users to collaborate in the development of a dictionary, set the Shared attribute of the dictionary to Yes and make sure that each of the collaborating users has been granted the Share permission. Each of the users can then modify and use the shared dictionary. Makes the dictionary a default option for the users that are allowed to use it for translation. Only User Dictionaries can be edited or shared. SYSTRAN Dictionaries can be shared but cannot be edited by users.

Administrator s Guide: SYSTRAN Enterprise Workgroup Server The Shared attribute provides permission for more than one user to modify a dictionary. It does not provide protection against overwriting changes made by another user who is editing the dictionary at the same time. Dictionary Compilation and Uploading Dictionaries can also be created in Excel or text editors and then uploaded and compiled using the Dictionary Compilation page (accessed through the Dictionaries page). This page can also be used to upload User Dictionaries (UDs) to the Dictionary Compilation host. Both the Administrator and users with Compile permission can post User Dictionaries to the host. Users who have been granted permission to use SYSTRAN Dictionary Manager (SDM) by the Administrator can use it to compile and post UDs directly to the Dictionary compilation host (refer to the SYSTRAN Enterprise Workgroup Server 5.0 User Interface Guide.

When activated, compression applies to all requests, including dictionary upload, dictionary download, and translation. The compression is activated by a string value named compress_min, created in the key [HKCU\Software\Systran\5.0\entcl]. The specified integer indicates the minimum data size trigerring compression in bytes. For example, you may set compress_min to to trigger compression on all request/response data items exceeding 100KB. This feature is avaible from server version and client version Both the server and the client need to have the appropriate versions or newer for the feature to be available. SYSTRAN Clipboard Taskbar The SYSTRAN Clipboard Taskbar (SCT) provides SYSTRAN users with a way to translate text from almost any Windows based application by cutting or copying it to the Windows clipboard. SCT automatically translates the clipboard text, which can then be pasted into any Windows-based application. 62 Administrator s Guide: SYSTRAN Enterprise Advanced Configuration Some advanced options may be set by modifying the systran.config file, which specifies the configuration of the SYSTRAN Enterprise Workgroup Server 5.0. This standard XML file consists of one <systran_config> element as the root with two child elements: The <system_configuration> element specifies general configuration options The <translators> element specifies the translation resources available to the service. System_configuration The <system_configuration> element consists of a number of <option> elements, where each <option> element has the following form: <option name="name">value</option> Most options available under the <system_configuration> element can be set from the System Configuration Options Administration Web page. However, there are some advanced options that can only be set by directly editing the systran.config file. Advanced Configuration Options Memory physical_memory Max amount in KB of physical memory on the server (default is 512Mb) Paths By default the Web Translation Service uses the directory path where the Web service is installed. File paths used by the system can be changed by specifying paths as <option> elements. dict_path_bin dict_path data_path userdict_path downloads_path doc_path custom_path Path that holds the local translation engines (default is engines/bin) Path that holds the local translation resources (default is engines/dicts) The path where data files used by the server will be stored (default is data) Path that holds the user created dictionaries (default is userdicts) Path where the Enterprise Application Packs installers are stored for download from the downloads Web page (default is downloads) Path where the Enterprise Workgroup Server documentation is stored for download from the help Web page (default is doc) Path where the Enterprise Workgroup Server web interface customization is stored (default is custom)

Administrator s Guide: SYSTRAN Enterprise Timeouts dll_timeout dll_cancel_timeout wait_timeout engine_connect_delay engine_connect_tries engine_load_tries engine_service_timeout The time in seconds that a translation is reset after no change in status (default is 60). The time in seconds that a translation is killed after no change in status after a cancel request has been made (default is 10). The time in seconds that a translation can wait before it is cancelled by the system (default is 600). The time in milliseconds to wait before trying to connect to the engine after it has been started, and between each connection attempt. The number of times to try connecting to the engine before giving up and reloading The number of times to try loading an engine before giving up HTTP timeout when making requests to the engines, in milliseconds Relative Url server_url The root URL to indicate at the beginning of all URLs used for fluid navigation. (The root URL must be like

Administrator s Guide: SYSTRAN Enterprise Translators It is possible to control the translation resources available on the server by editing the <translators> element in the systran.config file. This allows the Administrator to tune the performance of the system. Changing the translation resources may cause unstable server behavior if not done properly. The <translators> element specifies the translation resources that are available to the service. The resources may be grouped into <pool> elements. Pools A <pool> element specifies a group of translators. The top level <translators> element itself is equivalent to a pool element. A pool element has the following optional attributes: loadsize - If specified, indicates the number of translators within the pool that can be loaded at one time. If not specified, all the translators in the pool will be loaded. priorityrule - Specifies how a translator will be selected if multiple translators in the pool can service a request. The possible rules are the following: - order - (default) Picks the translator based on the order in the config file, so the first translator listed under the pool is chosen. - random - Picks a translator at random from the list. - lru - Picks the least recently used translator. - mru - Picks the most recently used translator. If a load size is specified, this attribute is ignored and the mru rule is always used to allow for effective loading and unloading of translators. if no load size is specified, the default is order. queue_type - Specifies how requests will be queued. Use only at the toplevel <translators> element. The following are possible queue types: - fifo - (default) A strictly first in, first out queue, where requests are processed in the exact order in which they are received. - sjf - A shortest job first priority queue, where smaller requests are processed before larger requests queue_aging - For SJF queues, specifies an aging factor, as the increase in priority per second. For an SJF queue, priority is the negative size of the input file in bytes.

Administrator s Guide: SYSTRAN Enterprise Local Translators A <local> element specifies a translator installed in the local dictionary directory. A local element has the following attributes: lp Specifies a language pair in the form xxyy, where xx is the source and yy is the target (enfr for English to French). If no lp attribute is specified or if lp="*", it is equivalent to a set of local elements, one for each language pair installed on the system. quantity The number of the specified local translators to include in the parent pool. It is important to control the number of translators that are loaded at once in memory on a server. If too many translators are loaded at once, the server will run out of memory, resulting in unstable behavior. The total number of translators loaded at once should never exceed the amount described by the following table, according to the amount of RAM installed on the server: RAM (Mb) translators The number of translators loaded at once within a pool can be set using the loadsize attribute of the pool. <acm/> specifies the translator launcher. This entry is mandatory in the <translators> xml, otherwise the server will not be functional. Example 1: The <default> Pool The <default> element specifies a local pool with a loadsize set according to the above table. For example, on a server with 2 Gb of ram, the <default> element would be equivalent to the following: <translators loadsize="22"> <acm/> <local lp="*"/> </translators> Example 2: Multiple Copies of Same Language Pair The following example also loads at most 22 Translators at once, but four copies of a single language pair can be loaded at the same time. This may result in better performance by adjusting the settings in line with language pair usage trends. <translators loadsize="22"> <acm/> <local lp="*" quantity="4"/> </translators>

Administrator s Guide: SYSTRAN Enterprise Example 3: CJK Server The following configuration will create a server that only translates Chinese, Japanese and Korean (CJK). It will ensure that two jaen and two zhen translators are always loaded, along with any two other language pairs. The total number of language pairs loaded at once will never exceed 6. <translators> <pool> <acm/> <local lp="jaen" quantity="2"/> <local lp="zhen" quantity="2"/> </pool> <pool loadsize="2"> <local lp="koen"/> <local lp="enzh"/> <local lp="enja"/> <local lp="enko"/> </pool> </translators>

Administrator s Guide: SYSTRAN Enterprise Translator Element Restrictions Any translator element, <translators>, <pool> or <local> may have a <restrictions> child element that specifies restrictions for load balancing. The restrictions element has any number of <option> elements of the form <option name="key">value</option>. The following are possible keys: minsize maxsize minsize_xxx maxsize_xxx Specifies the minimum file size in bytes. Specifies the maximum file size in bytes. Specifies the minimum file size in bytes for a particular file type, where xxx is the file type (txt, htm, rtf, doc, or pdf). Specifies the maximum file size in bytes for a particular file type, where xxx is the file type (txt, htm, rtf, doc, or pdf). A value of 0 indicates that no files of the given type are accepted. lp A comma separated list of accepted language pairs of the form xx_yy. gui A comma separated list of accepted client guis (sws, stpm, smtu,...). <pool> <restrictions> <option name="maxsize">1024</option> <option name="gui">sws</option> </restrictions>... </pool>
