For example, SMS v18 requires a migration, in order for this to take place, I will need to be on SMS v17.5 since there was also a migration required on this version. No - You can skip this version as long as you have completed the last required migration. Some versions do not require a data migration. This means that these versions can be skipped if updating in proper order. For example, SMS v10.5 did not require a migration. This means that, if I was updating from an older version, I would have to install/migrate on v10 but can jump v10.5 and go straight to v11 and update/migrate. 5 Errors Migration Issues Description: Migration needs to be done after each upgrade of SMS. A prompt will display indicating 'Data is from an older version of the software - Do you want to migrate'. The user should ALWAYS migrate before continuing. Details: Was an SMS backup done prior to the upgrade? Which operating system is the user on? How much free hard drive space is available? What are the computer power settings? What was the previous version of SMS and what is the new version? Was the upgrade done via the internet, by download, or by CD? Is the Data Location on a Network drive or remote location? Problem/Issue: "Not Responding" - Error from Microsoft Windows Fix: Do not close the software. Wait for process to complete. The migration screen may not show any progress until it has finished. Problem/Issue: Installed multiple updates versions without migrating data after each update. Opening software receives a message "The Data is too Old or Corrupt" Fix: Determine which version of the software was last functional. Uninstall the current version of the software and install the next version after the active version. The software will prompt the user to migrate the data. Problem/Issue: Installed a newer version of the software, uninstalled it and installed an older problem. Opening software receives a message "Data is from a newer version of the software." Fix: Rename the Data folder from the more current version. Open the software and it will create a new Data folder for the installed version. Problem/Issue: Computer went to sleep during the migration process. Fix: Change the Power Settings on the computer and restore a backup Problem/Issue: Available disk space is less than the size of the data folder. Fix: Clean up disk space. Go through the computer and delete anything that is not needed to free up hard drive space. Make sure to empty the Recycle Bin to release the space. Problem/Issue: User opens SMS after migration and the management tree is blank. Fix: Check what other projects the user has (Click on File > Projects). Occasionally SMS will open a different project after the migration has completed. Problem/Issue: An error during the migration process occurs Errors 4

6 Fix: 1) If the user is prompted, undo the migration 2) Remigrate the data by restoring the backup created before the upgrade. 4) Renaming the Data_OLD folder to Data is not an option. There is NO Vault data and the users will not have any maps. ** If the user has attempted migration twice or more, and the computer settings and the disk space has been checked, please contact technical support. The user might need to send a backup in. Problem/Issue: A single project is causing migration failure. Fix: 1) Find which project is causing the problem, check the partially migrated data folders to see what number project (data _ folder) the migration has stopped on. If it is consistently the same project: a) Note which number project is the problem. b) Reinstall the previous version. c) Find the project that is causing the problem. d) Create a single project backup of this project. migration again. project created in Step it must be sent in for repair. e) Delete the project from the project list, upgrade software and try f) If migration is successful, restore the backup from the problem d above. Note: If the Data is stored on a Network location, all the computers accessing the data MUST be upgraded at the same time but only one computer will initiate the migration. If user is on a networked setup, we strongly suggest migrating the data folder using a local installation of SMS. For example, if the networked data folder is on a server, the user will want to install SMS on that server Migration Issues 5

8 V14.5 C++ Update Error SMS v14.5 C++ Update Error Information Some users will experience an error when attempting to update to SMS v14.5. This error will prevent users from proceeding with the update and force them into updating via alternative routes. The specific error is shown below: The error will occur at the beginning or shortly after the start of the update. This message is caused by a change made in the web and true update installs and will not occur in SMS v15.x installs and newer. In order to proceed past this issue, follow the steps below: 1. Download SMS v14.5 by clicking here 2. Allow download to finish, then extract the zipped folder 3. Run the Setup.exe file contained within the newly created folder 4. 9 True Update Client C++ Runtime Error Description: When updating SMS over the Internet, the user gets a Runtime Java Error for TrueUpdateClient Cause: The TrueUpdateClient files in Program Files are unusable and/or corrupt. It can also be caused by third party antivirus software. How to Correct the TrueUpdateClient C ++ Runtime Error: Windows XP 1. With SMS closed down, Navigate to: 1. For 64-bit computers: C:\Program Files (x86)\ag Leader Technology\SMS 2. For 32-bit computers: C:\Program Files\Ag Leader Technology\SMS 2. Find these two files: 3. Once you find them, select and delete both 4. When that is complete, go to My Computer and navigate to Add/Remove Programs 5. Select Change or Remove Program 6. Select SMS and choose to Change the program 7. Follow the Install Wizard. When prompted, choose to Repair the program 8. 11 Invalid Drive Letter Description: Error Message when trying to update or install SMS: "invalid drive" Steps to Repair: 1. Disconnect from the drive that it points to in the error message (if present) 2. Insert jump drive, USB drive or other removable media into computer 3. Navigate to Disk Management, which should be located in the control panel (alternatively, you can just search Disk Management from your start menu and it should appear there) 4. Right-click over the inserted media and click "Change Drive Letter and Paths" 5. Click change and choose the drive that it was pointing to in the original error message Invalid Drive Letter 10

12 6. Click ok to finish the renaming and try to update/install again and you should no longer see this error message 7. 14 Proper lab-based SMS install procedure SMS allows multiple computers to be registered and some institutions, mainly those enrolled in the SMS educational program, choose to install in computer labs, please follow the below instructions for proper setup. There are some specific requirements that must be met in order to avoid potential issues with the software's operation. Below are some tips and advice that will help to ensure proper setup and installation of SMS within your computer lab. Please share this information with your IT staff or the individual that will be installing SMS in the lab. SMS will need to be installed on a local machine, the program does not support a server or terminal based install SMS is a single user program, so only one individual can use a single install at a given time Multiple installs can all utilize a shared data location, whether that be a shared folder on a computer or a server A silent install through the command prompt can be used to install SMS rather than using the setup.exe file Utilize this article for instructions on the silent install process SMS cannot be included in a computer image If the software is installed on a computer first then imaged, the software will likely lose its registration and become unusable If you need to image the lab, it is suggested that you wait to install SMS on the individual computers after the image has been applied This will reduce the chance that the licensing will be reset but it's not a guarantee During install, SMS will create a new folder within the user's documents folder This folder will contain additional folders/items that SMS uses If this location is ever moved or deleted, you may have issues installing SMS in your lab You will want to install SMS on an account where this folder location will not change or move Once SMS is installed on your computers, the online registration procedure can be used This can be accomplished using the account username and password If you do not have your login information, please go to hit the Forgot Password button, enter in the associated with your account and your information will be sent to you. 15 Installation Requirements General Guidelines SMS Software will install with a free trial period of 21 days except for the Water Management Module (no trial period available). The customer can access the 21 day free trial on both SMS Basic and SMS Advanced for each upgrade version of the software. There is no way to extend the free trial. 1) SMS Basic and Advanced  Each license allows a person to unlock SMS on 2 computers. Should not be used for 2 different people to unlock and share a license 2) Booklet Printing Module  Must have a current SMS Advanced license.  Each license allows a person to unlock SMS Booklet Printing on 2 computers. Should not be used for 2 different people to unlock and share a license 3) Water Management Module  Must have a current SMS Advanced license.  Each license allows a person to unlock SMS Water Management on 2 computers. Should not be used for 2 different people to unlock and share a license 4) Plot Prescription Module  Only for use with an Almaco Seed Star 360 planter  Must have a current SMS Advanced license  Each license allows a person to unlock SMS Plot Prescription on 2 computers. Should not be used for 2 different people to unlock and share a license 5) SMS Mobile PC  Each license allows a person to unlock SMS Mobile on 1 device. System Requirements 1) Minimum system requirements for the software to run at an acceptable performance level:  1 GHz processor or higher  Windows VISTA SP2, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8/8.1 (Not RT), Windows 10  256 MB RAM  4 GB Application/Data Storage Space 2) Recommended resolution settings will be the following when running 32 color and 100% scaling of the text sizes:  SMS Basic: 1024 x 768*  SMS Advanced: 1280 x 1024 *Note: If using SMS Basic and making edits to installed field tile, users will have to use the Menu options at the top of the editor to access some of the tools needed or increase the resolution on their computer monitor. 3) Network Data Location  SMS Advanced only  All computers accessing the data must have the same version of SMS  Must be wired network connection to device used for data storage (Wireless connections increase the probability of corrupting data and locking projects if connection is temporarily interrupted)  Network location must be mapped to the individual computers  WiFi or Cloud storage is not supported  When upgrading software, all projects need to be checked in and only one computer should be used to initiate the migration of the data  Migration needs be performed on a local installation, not over the network as it may cause data loss  Performance speed may be noticeably degraded 4) Software Installation  Installation as a Client Server environment is not supported  SMS software runs as a single instance - only one person can access the program at a time  Installing as a 'thin client' will not work  Installing the software on a server with a Windows OS and allowing remote desktop login will work, but is not advised. Limits access to one individual at a time. Installation Requirements 14

Find the folder created in Step 1 and click SAVE to begin the download. 4) When the download is complete, right click on the zipped folder and select 'Extract All'. 5) Open the extracted folder and locate the setup.exe file. Double click the setup.exe to launch the installation wizard. 6) Follow the installation wizard and select the correct installation type of the SMS Software. Installation / Upgrade Issues 1) Software won't install and a message appears referencing a CAB file or network error.  Anti-Virus program may have captured a file(s) - need to turn off during installation  Firewall may have blocked a file(s) 2) Message that a newer version already exists on the computer  User has skipped a version during an upgrade and is now attempting to go back  On a Network Data location, another computer connected to the database may have upgrade the software and migrated the data  SMS needs to be uninstalled before installing a previous version  May need to rename the Data folder 3) Message "Data is too old or corrupt" after installing software  User has skipped a version in the upgrade process  User had an older version, potentially a trial version, of the software installed previously  SMS needs to be uninstalled before installing the correct version  Rename the Data folder to start at the new version 4) Activation Code won't work  Activation code is for SMS Basic and the user installed SMS Advanced  Activation code has been previously used (one time only use)  The user is entering letter Os instead of number 0s 5) Check for Updates results in a Java Runtime Error  TrueUpdateClient file is corrupt or bad. 20 Changing Power Settings on the Desktop Computer Description: While a user is going through the migration process or reading in large amounts of data into SMS, it may be necessary for the user to modify their computer's power settings to insure that the computer does not go into hibernation or sleep mode that could cause processing and/or migration issues. Details: For a Windows XP Computer: 1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Display > Screen Saver tab - Click 'Power' under the monitor power section > Change 'Turn Off Hard Disks', 'System Standby' and 'Hibernate' (if it's turned on) to 'Never' 2. You can also go to Start > Control Panel > Power Options (this saves a couple of mouse clicks) For a Windows Vista Computer: 1. Go to Start > Control Panel > System & Maintenance > Power Options 2. Then click on Change Plan Settings under the currently selected Power Options plan. (Balanced, Power Saver, High Performance) 3. Click on Change Advanced Power Settings 4. Under Hard Disk change Turn off hard disk after to Never. Then click OK. For a Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10 computer: 1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options 2. Select Change when the computer sleeps on the left 3. 21 Manual Download of SMS 1. Open an Internet browser page; use Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer 2. Open the webpage 3. Navigate to Support and click on Downloads 4. Click on SMS Software 5. Click on the download link for the version you would like to download 6. The download will begin and show in your browser window. See table below for browser specific instructions. *if you are prompted, always save the file* 7. Extract the compressed file. System specific instructions are listed in the table below. 8. A new window will appear with the setup file; the SMS Icon should be visible next to the file 9. Double click on the Setup file. 10. A new window will pop up; Choose Run 11. Install Wizard will begin installation process. Follow the prompts and select settings for your SMS Basic or Advanced Setup. Once all settings are selected, the Install Wizard will complete installation and you will be able to operate your program as normal. 22 How to Setup Silent/Automated Installation of SMS Advanced The following text can be used to perform a silent install. You'll need to open a command prompt as an administrator, navigate to the install location and then enter the following command: setup.exe/s/v"/qn"/v"apptypebasic=1"/v"unitsinstallmode=1"/v"addlocal=advancedonly,main_all,advan This will allow for a silent install and can be used in situations where a large number of computers need to have SMS installed on them and the user doesn't want to sit at each computer and install them one by one. 23 Updating SMS Description: Updates are released several times a year. It is beneficial to always be on the most recent version, as updates contain fixes and enhancements to keep up with newly released display firmware and enhance the users overall experience with SMS. How it Works: Step 1 Before users begin the updating process it is recommended to first create a back-up(s) of all project(s). Users can create a back-up by opening a project and going to 'Services->Back-up/Restore->Back-up Project Data now'. Creating a back-up will ensure that your data is safe should something go wrong during the migration. Step 2 (SMS Advanced Only) Advanced users will also want to make sure that all projects are checked back in before the update process is started. Data will not be migrated if a project is checked out at the time of the update. Step 3 Once the data has been backed up, users have several methods to update to the next version. Option 1 (Windows 7, 8, and 10) Check for Updates (Internet Connection Required) Open SMS and across the top toolbar go to 'Help->Check for Updates'. SMS will connect to Ag Leader's TrueUpdateClient webserver and find the next update available for the software. Follow the wizard steps to download and install the next available version of the software. Users may need to disable anti-virus/firewall programs on the computer so the download/installation is not blocked. **If installing v15.5 or newer on a Windows Vista operating system this option will not work. Vista users will need to utilize option 2** Option 2 (Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 10) Manual Installation from web (Internet Connection Required for Download) Go to Download desired version (Note: If data is already contained in the system, users will want to make sure to download the next version in sequence so the stored data can be properly migrated. For example if version 15.2 is currently installed users would need to download/install version 15.5 and migrate the data before installing version 16.1). If asked to open or save, select 'save'. Once the download is complete it will show up in downloads folder on computer as a compressed/zipped folder. Extract downloaded folder (Right click->extract all) Double click and run the setup.exe application file once the download folder has been extracted. 24 Option 3 (Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 10) Using Ag Leader provided USB Step 4 Insert installation USB. Navigate to My computer and open the USB drive. Open SMS_Basic_Advanced_Install Folder and run setup.exe contained inside. Follow wizard steps to install the software. Once the installation is complete, open the SMS software Step 5 You will now be prompted to start the migration process. Click ok to start the migration. You will need to do this step to covert the data already contained in the system to the data structure of the new version. You will not be able to access your information on the new version until the data has been migrated. Migration can take several hours or even just a few minutes depending on your computer, the number of files, and overall amount of data that needs to be migrated. You will want to make sure the computer stays fully powered throughout the migration process and does not go to sleep. Step 6 Once the migration completes the software will restart and all of your information should now be migrated and accessible just like it was on the previous version. 25 Moving SMS from One Computer to Another The following instructions will walk through the steps necessary to transfer SMS and the associated data from one computer to another. 1. Create a backup of the SMS program on the original computer 1. If you need assistance creating a backup the link below will explain the process in SMS Next, on the new computer, download and install SMS 1. If you need assistance downloading and installing SMS, the link below will explain the process in SMS Note - If you intend to transfer data with an SMS backup remember a backup can only be restored into the same version of SMS or one version newer. 3. Move the backup created on the original computer to the new computer using a flash drive or other transfer device 4. Restore the backup into the new SMS install 1. If you need assistance restoring a backup, the link below will explain the process in SMS When opening SMS, the program may inform you that it is running on a demo version. If this happens, click Register and Register Online. Enter the username and password associated with the SMS account and see if the registration will go through. 1. 26 SMS SCP Install The SMS SCP link is a download of the SMS program, but it also includes four background files that SMS requires to run. There are certain instances where one or more of these four files need to be reinstalled to make SMS run properly. The instructions below will walk through downloading and installing the SMS SCP link. 1. Turn anti-virus and firewall off. 2. Uninstall SMS from the computer. Be sure to note the version of SMS that was installed as it will be necessary to know in the next step 3. Navigate to this location on the computer: C:\Program Files (x86)\ag Leader Technology\SMS. Delete the SMS folder. 4. Next, click on the link below to navigate to the Ag Leader SCP site. Be sure to select the same version as was previously installed on the computer. 1. The links below are for a few recent versions of SMS. The link to other versions can be accessed by changing the last three numbers to match the required version. - SMS SMS SMS SMS SMS Once on the webpage, click on the link for the version of SMS -AgL.zip file and the download will start. 6. After the download is complete you will need to unzip the file. To unzip a file, right click on the file and choose Extract All. 7. When the file is unzipped, open the folder and you should see a folder named ISSetupPrerequisites. Inside the folder will be four folders named a combination of letters and numbers. Double click on the first folder and run the file inside the folder. 8. You may receive a prompt saying the program is already installed on the computer. If this happens, uninstall and reinstall the file. 9. The third file in the list of four may give issues. If the file asks to be unzipped, unzip the file then wait for it to open. On some computers this process takes a while. After the file opens it can then be installed. 10. When installing the forth file it may give a message saying a newer version of this file is already installed. If this occurs, the file does not need to be installed and can be skipped. 11. After the four prereq files are installed, you can then locate the Setup.exe file to install SMS. Right-click on the setup file and choose to run as an Administrator. Navigate through the install wizard to complete the install. After the wizard is complete then SMS should be installed on the computer 12. Restart the computer after SMS is installed.
