Overview - Introduction 1 Overview 1.1 Introduction NextView 4 is a universal program for the acquisition and analysis of measured data, providing for the configuration of measurement systems, the display of live data, as well as storage and analysis of measured data. Without any programming efforts NextView 4 helps you to realize the most various measuring applications. The operation of NextView 4 follows the Windows conventions, reducing the lead-in period drastically. NextView 4's 32bit-technology guarantees high-speed processing of almost any amount of data. BMC Messsysteme GmbH offers various types of measuring hardware to combine with NextView 4, so that signals are measured via network (LAN), USB, PCI, ISA, or via the serial interface RS232. Several measuring systems even of different type can be connected. In order to meet most specific requirements we provide different versions of NextView 4. This manual describes the installation of the network version NextView 4 Client/Server. The Client/Server version makes measuring signals via network possible providing for almost unlimited possibilities in measurement technology as neither the number of workstations (clients for configuration, visualization and analysis) nor the number of measuring systems is limited. A password query with different user levels prevents the unauthorized access to the system. To create client-programs tailored to individual requirements of practically any kind we offer NextView 4 Client API. This is a programming interface, realized as ActiveX Control (OCX), for programming the NextView 4 Server. It is compatible with all measurement systems by BMC Messsysteme GmbH. Before you start installing the software NextView 4, first the hardware drivers must have been installed, so that the measuring device will be recognized by the system. Depending on the used hardware and operating system the installation process is varying and is described in detail in the respective documentation. An installation program on your NextView 4 CD leads you through the installation of the software in clear steps. BMC Messsysteme GmbH Page 5

Overview - Introduction Any changes of the hardware require a new installation of NextView 4 Client/Server (see "Add/Remove hardware", p. 42). The German version of NextView 4 will be installed if the regional settings ( Control Panel) of your PC are German, Austrian or Swiss. On PCs with any other settings the English version will be installed. For further information, please see the FAQ area of our website. Page 6 BMC Messsysteme GmbH

Overview - Quickstart 1.6 Quickstart Before you start with the installation: The hardware must be connected or mounted into the PC. First the installation of the hardware driver must be done, so that the system can communicate with the hardware. Any changes of the hardware require a new installation of NextView 4 Client/Server (see "Add/Remove hardware", p. 42). It is not necessary to uninstall before. The installation of NextView 4 Client/Server must proceed in the following order: 1. Installation of NextView 4 Server 2. Installation of NextView 4 Workstation (or NextView 4 Client API) To be able to install software you have to be administrator. If using updates for the measuring systems, server and workstations, they must all have the same version and be applied to all system components (see "Updates", p. 43). Make sure to close the program NextView 4 Server first before installing NextView 4 Workstation (or NextView 4 Client API). The installation of the software is done by means of the NextView 4 CD. When inserting the CD into the CD-ROM drive automatically a CD starter opens (otherwise start setup.exe). Select the product group "NextView 4.2 Client/Server". BMC Messsysteme GmbH Page 13

Overview - Quickstart Installation of NextView 4 Server: On the NextView 4.2 Client/Server product page start the installation program after selecting the entry "NV4-SRV". The installation can be opened directly. If your browser does not allow that, please first save the file install.exe on hard disk and then start the installation by clicking on it. Fill in your name, company and your NextView 4 Server license number. Install the hardware to be used one after the other by pressing the button "Add" and by selecting the measuring system to be used. If necessary, define specific settings concerning the product according to the documentation of your measuring hardware. Enter the IP address of the server, which the server uses to communicate with the connected workstations, then the broadcast address (if necessary), the DNS name and the NextView 4 server name. These settings are essential for the functioning of the whole measuring system and should be done by or with the help of a network administrator. For the access as administrator, provided with full access rights, a pass word has to be specified and confirmed. It will be required to log on in NextView 4 Workstation. Afterwards a configuration disk is created containing the current settings and which is required during the installation of NextView 4 Workstation or NextView 4 Client API. Save it on a storage medium to be available afterwards. In the last part of the installation you are asked for the program group and the directory path, before the files are copied to disk. Installation of NextView 4 Workstation or NextView 4 Client API: On the NextView 4.2 Client/Server product page start the installation program after selecting the entry "NV4-WORK" or "NV4-CAPI". Fill in your name, company and the license number for NextView 4 Workstation or NextView 4 Client API. Insert the configuration disk when requested to transmit the same configuration parameters at once to all workstations. If it is not available cancel the installation for now and make up for the creation of the configuration disk. Page 14 BMC Messsysteme GmbH

Overview - Quickstart In the last part of the installation you are asked for the program group and the directory path, before the files are copied to disk. The installation of an update (see "Updates", p. 43) proceeds like the first installation but displays the last installed device configuration and keeps all projects and configurations saved before. BMC Messsysteme GmbH Page 15

Software installation - Information 2 Software installation 2.1 Information Before you start with the installation: First the installation of the hardware driver must be done, if using an im- AD25(a) or im3250(t) configure the device with the "im Administration Utility", so that the system can communicate with the hardware. The hardware must be connected or mounted into the PC. Any changes of the hardware require a new installation of NextView 4 Client/Server (see "Add/Remove hardware", p. 42). It is not necessary to uninstall before. The installation of NextView 4 is done by means of an installation program, which is on the NextView 4 CD. As soon as you insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive a CD starter opens automatically (otherwise start setup.exe). Choose the product group "NextView 4.2 Client/Server" and under the category "NextView 4.2 Client/Server" the entries "NV4-SRV", "NV4-WORK" and "NV4- CAPI" to start the relevant installation program for NextView 4 Server, NextView 4 Workstation and NextView 4 Client API. First install the software NextView 4 Server on the Server-PC and then NextView 4 Workstation or NextView 4 Client API on all connected workstations. Absolutely keep to this order, as during the second step the configuration of the server is required. If using the CD starter in HTML format, you can decide to directly open the installation program or to save it to disk. Both options are possible. Page 16 BMC Messsysteme GmbH

Software installation - Information Some browsers require saving the installation program to hard disk before. In this case you must start the installation program install.exe explicitly after copying. fig. 1 In clear dialog boxes an installation wizard will guide you through the installation. You can change your settings at any time. The button "Next" will lead you to the next dialog box, with "Back" you go one step backwards. The installation can always be stopped early with "Cancel" without saving anything. Please make sure to install NextView 4 Server first and then NextView 4 Workstation (or NextView 4 Client API). To be able to install software you have to be administrator. If using updates (see "Updates", p. 43) for the measuring systems, server and workstations, they must all have the same version and be applied to all system components. BMC Messsysteme GmbH Page 17

Software installation - Installation of NextView 4 Server Formula channels fig. 5 In contrast to analog and digital channels formula channels do not exist physically. The signals of the formula channels are created artificially by calculating signals with each other without saving the original signals. 128 formula channels at the maximum are available with NextView 4 Client/Server. At least one device must have been installed before you can install formula channels im-ad25 / im-ad25a / im3250 / im3250t (LAN) If using NextView 4 Client/Server together with the external TCP/IP based network measuring system im-ad25 / im-ad25a / im3250 / im3250t (im-ad25: not available anymore since 04/2005, im3250: not available anymore since 11/2000) you insert the IP address of the device and its device specific features. The latter is described in the documentation of your measuring system. BMC Messsysteme GmbH Page 21

Software installation - Installation of NextView 4 Server fig. 6 The IP address has been adjusted during the configuration of the device. You can look it up in the "im Administration Utility", the configuration software for the im devices. If you didn't fill in the correct IP address there will be no connection between NextView 4 Server and the hardware. To operate the im measuring systems with NextView 4 Client/Server, new firmware is required (from version 122 on). A firmware update can be done with the im Administration Utility. The latest version is provided on the NextView 4 CD. Make sure that the IP address of the im-ad25 / im-ad25a / im3250 / im3250t is suitable for your network configuration. For questions turn to your network administrator. A firewall software installed on the PC might block the operation of the im measuring system. In this case please contact your network administrator. To be in the same network, the server PC and the im-ad25 / im-ad25a / im3250 / im3250t must have the same network number! The device provides for a temperature sensor measuring the internal temperature of the device. In addition there is a short-circuited internal ground channel for the 0V Page 22 BMC Messsysteme GmbH

Software installation - Installation of NextView 4 Server reference and a clock signal, if you have external synchronization. There are no other adjustments required (PIO24II: not available anymore since 3/2005). BMC Messsysteme GmbH Page 25

Software installation - Installation of NextView 4 Server USB-AD/-PIO (USB) Select the USB plug device used. All connected USB measuring systems of this type are listed with their serial number displayed on the test label at the device cable, so that if several devices of the same type are connected they can easily be distinguished from each other. As no further device specific settings are necessary proceed as described in chapter "PC settings", p. 30. fig Server settings For questions about network settings we refer to your network administrator! If the server PC is part of several networks, e.g. measuring net and intranet, it has a different IP address in each network. IP addresses have a strictly defined structure consisting of the network ID, which is identical for all members of one network, and the host ID clearly identifying the host. The installation program detects if the server PC provides several IP addresses. In this case enter the IP address of the network card, the server uses to communicate with connected workstations, e.g. the intranet IP address. Page 26 BMC Messsysteme GmbH

Software installation - Installation of NextView 4 Server fig. 12 The broadcast address is reserved and exists in every network. If sending a data package to this address, all network participants will get it, so that the server can make received measuring data available to all connected workstations. The broadcast address is always the highest IP address provided by the respective network. fig. 13 If your network uses dynamic IP addresses, in the following dialog enter the DNS name for the server PC. The DNS name assigns a free IP address to the server PC. BMC Messsysteme GmbH Page 27

Software installation - Installation of NextView 4 Server You can additionally define a server name, which is especially helpful if running several servers. NextView 4 Client/Server is provided with different access rights and a password query, which is set up in NextView 4 Workstation by the administrator for each user. To log-in with administrator rights when starting NextView 4 Workstation for the first time, enter and confirm the required password here. The administrator password consists of 24 characters at the maximum and can be chosen arbitrarily. That means in particular, that it does not have to be the administrator password of the PC itself. fig. 14 If loosing the administrator password the installation of NextView 4 Client/Server must be repeated! Page 28 BMC Messsysteme GmbH

Software installation - Installation of NextView 4 Server Saving the configuration fig. 15 All settings defined so far are copied to a configuration disk to ensure that the same configuration is copied to all connected workstations during installation of NextView 4 Workstation or NextView 4 Client API. If you don't have a floppy disk now, you can skip this step for now and create the configuration disk later (see "Create configuration disk", p. 42), but it has to be done before installing workstations. When creating the configuration disk all data on this disk will be erased. If server and workstation are located one computer the configuration disk does not have to be created. The workstation installation program can connect directly to the server, so that data are directly transmitted. BMC Messsysteme GmbH Page 29

Software installation - Installation of NextView 4 Server PC settings fig. 16 The suggested program group "NextView 4.2/Server" from where you can reach the software in the Windows start menu as well as the default directory path for NextView 4 Client/Server can be modified as desired, of course. To switch to another installation directory uncheck the checkbox, so that the boxes below are activated. Page 30 BMC Messsysteme GmbH

Software installation - Installation of NextView 4 Server fig. 17 After all information is given, the size auf the available disk space is determined and the files required for the installation of NextView 4 Client/Server are copied to disk. Restart your computer if necessary for these changes to take effect. After successful installation the Windows start menu includes the new entry "NextView 4.2 / Server" under "All Programs" or any other previously defined program group (see fig. 16). It contains text files with the latest news and information and the commands to start and configure NextView 4 Server and to create the configuration disk. BMC Messsysteme GmbH Page 31

It contains important configuration data of the server, which are required during the installation of NextView 4 Workstation. With the configuration disk it is guaranteed that all connected workstations are installed with the same parameters. If the configuration disk is not at hand or has not been created during installation, you can do this at any time with the respective command of the program group "NextView 4.2 / Server" in the Windows start menu under "All Programs". If selecting this command, you will be prompted to insert a disk into drive A:. Then the configuration file is copied to disk. When creating the configuration disk all previous data on the disk will be deleted. 3.2 Add/Remove hardware If devices are added to the measurement setup of NextView 4 Client/Server or removed from it, the software must be reinstalled step by step as described in this manual (see "Software installation", p. 16). This applies in the same way for the replacement of measurement systems, even if they are of the same type. Page 42 BMC Messsysteme GmbH

Subsequent changes - Updates 3.3 Updates New versions of NextView 4 Client/Server which are free of charge can directly be installed via an online update, if an internet connection is available. The update of NextView 4 Server is executed via the relating command in the program group of the server in the Windows start menu. A new version of NextView 4 Workstation is installed via a command in the menu of the software itself. If default settings were used, the relating commands can be found as follows: NextView 4 Server: Windows start menu / "(All) Programs" / program group "NextView 4.x" / folder "Server" / command "Online Update" NextView 4 Workstation: start NextView 4 Workstation / menu "Options" / command "Update NextView" If connected via a proxy server only the address and port of the proxy server is required. For installation all settings of the original installation are used. fig. 30 Changes of the hardware configuration can also be realized in NextView 4 Client/Server. If selecting the command "Hardware setup" in the menu "Options", the part of installation concerning the hardware is carried out only (see fig. 4). BMC Messsysteme GmbH Page 43

Subsequent changes - Uninstall the software Installing a new software version does not require uninstalling before. All previously created projects are kept. If not preferring the direct way in NextView 4 Client/Server to install updates, simply reinstall the software. The update of NextView 4 Client API is executed by installing the new version. 3.4 Uninstall the software fig. 31 The advantage of uninstalling a program instead of simply deleting the files is that no useless waste data or files remain on the hard disk. To start the "Uninstall Wizard" open the dialog "Add or Remove Programs" in the Windows Control Panel ("Start / (Settings) / Control Panel"). Page 44 BMC Messsysteme GmbH

Subsequent changes - Uninstall the software Select the concerned software and press the button "Change/Remove" so that the software is easily removed from the hard disk of your computer. BMC Messsysteme GmbH Page 45
