3 ADePT: evolution This presentation is for the users of ADePT who have seen and used the program before, but may not have fully utilized all of its features. 4 ADePT data browser ADePT data browser allows the user to look into the dataset they are working with and see individual observations. 4 / 37

10 File formats ADePT supports working with Stata s (*.dta), SPSS s (*.sav) and tab-separated (*.txt) data files: Data browser does not allow the user to edit the data, but the user can type a new file as a text file if necessary (using notepad or any other tool). Similarly, tab-separated format can be used for transferring data from Excel to ADePT. 10 / 37

13 Editable graphs With editable graphs the users can: edit titles and labels adjust colors and patterns of the lines change font settings adjust ranges and units of the axes remove individual series add their own series resize graphs control the size, position and presence of the legend print in high quality etc., etc., etc. 13 / 37

15 Missing values tab Some data producers (e.g. DHS data) use values of 9, 97, 99, 997 etc. to denote missing values. If missing values are not described as such, they might appear as categories in tabulations, or (even worse) be taken as is in computations (e.g. wage=997usd/hour) 15 / 37

16 Missing values tab Missing values tab menu item provides access to the recoding of missing values feature. If the missing values in your data are different from the missing values in Stata (or SPSS if you use *.sav files) they must be properly described in ADePT. Note that optional tabs are switched off by default. You can switch them on. You can t switch them off if they are active. 16 / 37

19 Filter tab Similarly to the missing values tab there is a filter tab that allows filtering the data. Filtering occurs before any other processing of the data. 19 / 37

20 Custom tables Users can build basic tables themselves by specifying the row and column variables, as well as the cell statistics. ADePT creates a preview of the table. 20 / 37

22 Options We have simplified the application settings. In most cases ADePT now finds the Excel or another application handling the XLS files on the user s machine, or the user can specify it directly. 22 / 37

23 Modules ADePT now has truly modular architecture. Modules (*.ADAM files) can be added to or removed from the installation. They can also be disactivated to make ADePT start faster. 23 / 37

24 Data file levels New modules of ADePT are using multi-level data controls with each data file selector responsible for handling files of it s designated level (household, individual, livestock, plot, crop, etc). 24 / 37

25 Parameters lookup As the number of parameters grows and their values are not straightforward to figure out, it becomes necessary to introduce parameters lookup from a pre-defined library. 25 / 37

29 Expressions in inputs If the data is not conforming to the requirements, it can be made compatible with some basic immediate transformations. Basic logical expressions can be supplied immediately in the input fields. 29 / 37

Generating variables ADePT can generate new variables (think simulation), replace or remove existing ones. Modified variables are immediately available in the data browser.

Original data files are never modified. The rules for modifying datasets are saved into the project files and replayed every time the project is opened. If original data is changed, the generated variables will be regenerated. (similar to calculatable cells in Excel). New variables can be added to a single or to all datasets simultaneously (if the module supports working with multiple datasets) 31 / 37

Project files Project files allow you to save the settings of a particular analysis: references to data files, values of input fields (variable names), choices of the parameters.

Our modules are supplied with example data (where possible). Note Open Example Project menu entry. ADePT will notify you to the changes in the project and remind you to save your changes. You have the list of recent project files. Note hot-keys, e.g. Ctrl+S to save project. 32 / 37

33 Project files You can add references to web data as well! (hold shift when you click Add ) The data file will be downloaded every time the project is opened in ADePT. ADePT will not publish your data or project files online. You must upload them to your site yourself. 33 / 37

34 Project files To publish a web project online upload the project file and all referenced datasets to your server. Web project must refer to web data. Local projects may refer to local and/or web data. ADePT communicates via HTTP protocol (port 80). Good for teaching, demonstrations, and dissemination. 34 / 37
