Continue Free download until July 29, 2016
Continue Older PCs XP --No Vista --Maybe 7, 8 or 8.1 Yes
System requirements Again, this is more of a prelude, but it's important to know if you want to prevent unnecessary issues upon installation. Your computer needs to be up to par with certain standards. Here's the specs Microsoft requires: A processor of 1 gigahertz (ghz) or faster 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit) RAM 16 GB of free hard disk space Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver A Microsoft account and Internet access
Problems within Windows 8 Start Screen It s hard to state this definitively, but it might be safe to say that everyone hates the Windows 8 Start screen. Every single person. On a desktop or laptop, it s just horrendous. In Windows 10, Microsoft has finally brought back the desktop Start menu, and it s glorious. It includes most of the key elements from Windows 7 s Start menu, and then adds a section for modern tiles. In this format, the Windows tiles are no longer offensive they re actually useful.
The second major Windows 8 pain point that Windows 10 fixes is the concept of one size fits all. Having a single operating system that spans desktops, laptops, tablets and smart phones sounds like a great idea. Having a single user interface that spans desktops, laptops, tablets and smart phones sounds like a terrible idea. Microsoft did it anyway with Windows 8, but fixed the problem in Windows 10. Now, we have Continuum Mode, which alters Windows 10 s user interface based on whether you re on a tablet or a PC. And if you have a hybrid device, you can even switch back and forth depending on whether you re in laptop mode or tablet mode.
The Windows platform is named Windows because of the key feature that set it apart from older operating systems when it first debuted: Windows. Windows apps open in windows. You can drag them around, drag a corner to resize them, and arrange them however you d like. In Windows 8, modern apps took up the entire screen and you had to jump through hoops to make them the size you want.
So long, Internet Explorer no one will miss you. And Windows 8 was so terrible that it included not one but TWO versions of Internet Explorer! OK, so maybe there are some people who would miss Internet Explorer, so Microsoft kept it around. It s mainly for enterprise users though, and I highly recommend switching to Windows 10 s faster and sleeker new Edge browser.
Windows 8 s live tiles were cool in theory, but looking around for information pertaining to notifications was a huge pain. In Windows 10, Microsoft introduced the Action Center, which is its slight reimagining of Apple s Notification Center from OS X. Here, you ll find all of your notifications in one place so you can act on them quickly and easily. This section is also customizable, just like Notification Center, so you can create the perfect notification hub for your needs.
Continue Things that don t work Old special programs (first check with manufacture of product for driver up-dates that work with Win 10). Know the IP address for links you may need to install. (have them in favorites for bookmarks)
Forced updates cause system crash Another problem caused by the forced updates is that they can crash your computer. Rebooting your computer should fix that on a case by case basis. You can also uninstall the driver that's causing problems.
Continue Back-up and up-date before up-grade Total system recovery Your address book, files, programs and apps (short cuts on desktop)
Forced updates cause software clashes The forced updates are by far the trickiest aspect of Windows 10. Yet another problem that can occur is when a Windows update coincides with a third party driver management software update. This can cause a crash. The third party software can be halted, but the Windows update cannot. Your best bet is uninstall third party driver management and letting Windows take care of all the system updates, which gives Microsoft power over another company's products, which isn't cool.
Wi-Fi password sharing Windows 10 comes with a system called Wi-Fi Sense, originally found in Windows Phone 8.1. It enables users to share your Wi-Fi network access with your contacts on Facebook, Skype, and Outlook. Now, I'm all for sharing, but this is going pretty far, as the feature automatically shares your password (encrypted) to everyone you're connected to... spammers included. To disable this setting, go to Wi- Fi > Network Settings > Manage Wi-Fi Settings and clear all the boxes there.
Printer not responding If, after upgrading, you find that your printer isn't working, you may have to start the whole installation process over. In order to ensure seamless connectivity, everything, even the drivers of accompanying hardware, should be updated in advance of upgrading. Make sure you're using a printer that's compatible with Windows.
Learning the browser Windows 10 comes with a new web browser called Microsoft Edge, which is the new default across PC, tablets, and smartphones. The browser includes a "home" button that you add or take off the toolbar. Click on that button and you'll be routed to the site of your choosing.
Finding favorites The trouble with an all-new browser is that it won't transfer pages you have favorites on IE. You can, however, transfer all your bookmarks over by opening Microsoft Edge, checking off Internet Explorer and clicking on "import favorites. Your favorites should now be loaded onto the Edge Favorites tab.
Mail fail? Many who've previewed Windows 10 say that Windows Mail available on version 8.1 was superior. This is because you could create folders and subfolders, which you can't do with the Mail app in Windows 10 (at least as of now). People who want to do more customizing are using Thunderbird or Gmail instead, which works well with Windows 10.
Out Of control Chrome The Chrome browser, a complicated ecosystem unto itself, is extra finicky on Windows 10. Perhaps this is Microsoft's subversive way of getting more people to use Edge? You may find it particularly buggy while running YouTube. If you must use this browser, be mindful of extensions. Run as few as possible.
Actually, you may have to re-install Chrome Some users have found that Chrome crashes without warning and simply does not wake back up when reopened. The solution? Unfortunately, you'll have to uninstall and reinstall Chrome.
Parade Of pop-ups Microsoft Edge loves its pop-up ads. You'll need to go into Internet Options, and under Privacy select "Turn On Pop-Up Blocker" in Settings. That sounds obvious, but it doesn't end there. You'll also want to click (just below that in the InPrivate section) on "Disable Toolbars and extensions when InPrivate browsing starts."
Edge won't stream music when minimized Because Edge is a universal app, its actions are suspended when it's minimized. This is really annoying when you're streaming music on it. There is no fix for this, so you simply have to stream your music from another source if you plan to listen to it while using your device for other activities.
Edge crashes when AMD is running Edge is probably going to have to undergo a couple overhauls before it's a competent browser. If you're using AMD GPU with it, expect "frequent crashes" according to Microsoft. To avoid this, go to Settings > Update and Security > Windows Update > Advanced and change to Slow Ring.
Mind your settings When you upgrade to Windows 10, a Setting Screen will pop up asking if you want to use the new Photos, Movies, TV, and the Microsoft Edge browser. It seems instinctual to check yes, since you want access to these features. Consider though that if you do check yes, all your default applications will be Microsoft. Best to not select this setting and instead choose to use specific Microsoft apps going forward.
Blue screen of death Hopefully you won't face this, if you find yourself facing this very not good situation, you should reset your PC. To do so, find the Recovery section inside the PC settings. To go to the Recovery section, search for "reinstall" in the search tool inside the Start menu then click on "Remove everything and reinstall Windows."
Tricky touchscreen Some users previewing Windows 10 on their mobile devices say that the touchscreen abilities are not as intuitively functional as they should be. For instance, it's easy to miss the edge of a window when trying to drag it, and some of the icons are too small to grasp with your finger pad. Unfortunately, this is just the nature of the beast. There's really not much other than practice that will help you overcome this finicky problem.
Unplug Unplug backup or other hard drives. (win 10 installer will block them and you have to re-format to use). Unplug your back-up drive. Unplug second monitor (same type of problem here).
Free for now, but not forever This isn't so much a problem as it is a gentle warning. Windows 10 will be available as a free upgrade but only for one year. After that it retails for $119. A year feels like a long time, but in the world of technology it's a blink of an eye, so don't put this upgrade off for too long... just long enough to let the initial kinks get ironed out.
Lets Get Started
Continue Time Watching the grass grow Download 45 mins. Plus Install 45 mins. plus Time to set-up old accounts and short cuts Hour or more.
Continue Terms Programs become Apps Exployer Edge
Continue Power Needs During download (plug-in) Running apps (more is not better)
Continue Back-up disk Total system recovery (not just data files) Your address book, files, programs and apps Have a list of User and Passwords for your apps (New Hard Drive replacement) (This produce will be around for a longtime)
Windows 10 is spying on almost everything you do here s how to opt out
Things to know before the jump! Privacy Change the default setting By default, Windows 10 is set up to share your Internet connection over Wi-Fi. This is a nifty feature if you want it, and a dangerous one if you don t. To be on the safe side, you should probably just disable it right from the get-go. Open the Settings app from the taskbar or Start Menu, then open Change Wi-Fi settings and click Manage Wi- Fi settings. Now, uncheck all the boxes under For networks I select, share them with. You may also want to slide the toggles to off underneath Connect to suggested open hotspots and Connect to networks shared by my contacts.
Customize the Start Menu Ahhhhhhhhhhh! The Start Menu is back! It s OK, you can get excited. Once you get past the simple fact that the Start Menu is there, however, it s time to begin making the most of it.
Manage restarts People when something goes wrong with your computer, restarting is the first thing you should try. In fact, you should be restarting your computer regularly if you don t shut it down each night. That said, automatic restarts after software updates that are unexpected can be very annoying. So here s an important setting to tweak: In the Advanced update section within Settings, select Advanced Windows Update options. Then, in the drop-down menu at the top, choose Notify to schedule restart. This way, your computer will still restart regularly whenever updates are installed, but you ll get a warning first.
Meet the Action Center Microsoft s spin on Apple s Notification Center is called the Action Center. It might not be the most original feature in the world, but it s quite useful. Live tiles are nifty, but having one location for all of your notifications is a welcome change. Seriously, get to know the new Action Center.
Don t let notifications own you As great as the new Action Center is, however, think of it like an iphone. If you give every app carte blanche access to notifications, you ll lose your mind. Instead, you want to analyze things on a per-app basis and choose which apps can pop up notifications and which should stay quiet. In Windows 10, you can adjust notifications settings by clicking the notifications icon in the system tray. The click All settings, followed by System and then Notifications & actions. Here, you ll be able to pick and choose which apps can display notifications and which ones cannot. You ll also be able to tweak a few additional settings pertaining to notifications.
Continue New Feature Cortana (voice assistance), you talk it goes and finds the answer or web page. (Add a mic to your desktop if needed)
Continue DVD player /recorder will need a driver up-date.
