2 1 General Product Philosophy ArtistaNET was developed as Entry-Level-Product to realize cost efficient Ethernet-Clients. Target was, t o elimin ate all t hese disadv antages of WIN ClientPCs (ex pensive, t ime consu ming installation, hi gh po wer cons umption, necessi ty of S W-updates, permanent ad ministration). I t was no i ntention to implement vi deo capability (for video: Arti stamedia or from Q IV 09 on: 1GBit Artista III) 1.1 What is the general concept? ArtistaNET is based on PUSH-technology. In formation w ill be not act ively requ ested f rom PC/Server/Host. There are always 2 pictures locally stored. Option for customized projects: via customized FW and based on 16MB free flash memory more pictures could be locally stored and played via playlist (e.g. VGA-TFT: 15 pictures) 1.2 Support In case of any questions, please contact our responsible sales person or our technical support: support@distec.de Page 2 of 14

3 2 Questions concerning hardware 2.1 Is the design optimized concerning EMI performance? Concerning EMI optimization our designs are basically oriented to DIN and DIN But also mecha nical constr uction has a st rong i nfluence on E MI emission. Therefore if additional E MI improvements are necessary to meet your maximum system emission we have the technology to f urthermore i mprove t his. Wi th modi fication of LVDS si gnal modul ation via changing some registers in firmware we can positively influence the emission. 2.2 What display diameter resp. resolutions are supported as standard? ArtistaNET-II (VGA Full-HD) ArtistaNET-II Extended (T op = C, for projects only please contact Marketing) ArtistaNET-III (Gigabit Ethernet) coming soon Q1/ What is the max. length of the network cable? The Ethernet standard specifies max. 100 m / app. 300 feed (Shielded twisted pair cable CAT 5,6 or -7) The length can be extended via max. 4 hubs/ switches, which are connected serial all 100 m/ 300 feed. Max. length is then 500 m / 1500 feed 2.5 How can a cost efficient Wireless transmission be realized with ArtistaNET? Easy and cost efficient is the realization with so called WLAN Ethernet Bridges 10/100 base T (wireless cable trans-former). There is a broad range of products in the market and pricing is currently between us$ 55 and us$ 90. These Ethernet Bridges will be directly connected to the ArtistaNET Ethernet port without any firmware adjustment. The configuration of the bridge is done web based. Alternatively there are also tiny solutions for integration. 4 2.6 How is it possible to receive Audio data on Artista side? ArtistaNET-III: Audio via USB dongle option is available on request. ArtistaNET-II: In the consumer area there are different cost efficient LAN audio receiver available; then on receiver side there will be a LAN-Hub with ArtistaNET and LAN-Audio. On ArtistaMEDIA Audio is implemented. For short audio signals (e.g. warning messages) USB dongle option is available on request. 2.7 Is it possible to connect the diagnostic board ARCB to ArtistaNET? ArtistaNET-II: FW Rev is prepared to support ARCB via the SDK. ArtistaNET-III: coming soon, TBD 3 Questions concerning software 3.1 What is the default IP-address / network configuration? On request for customer projects we offer a network pre-selection service! Please contact Marketing for details. The IP-Address can easily be changed by using the ArtistaNET configuration interface. This interface can be used with every common web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari and many others). For more detailed information please refer to the ArtistaNET Manual on our homepage. 3.3 Which operating systems are supported? - Windows 7 32 Bit all versions (tested on Windows 7 Ultimate) - Windows XP 32 Bit all versions (tested on Windows XP Professional SP3) - Windows 2003 Server 32Bit For further information please see the Release Notes. 5 3.4 How can I reset a forgotten IP-Address of ArtistaNET-II? Hardware Reset Procedure: Short CN22 Pins 5 and 6 Supply power to the ArtistaNet Wait at least 15 seconds Unshort the pins Allow the device to boot-up Upon resetting the card to factory defaults, the card will be set to maintenance/rescue mode. From there, you can set the card to factory default via Restart Artista and then by choosing the option Reset network configuration to factory defaults and restarting the card. 3.5 Is it possible to automatically supply every ArtistaNET within the network with a defined IP address (DHCP)? Yes Since Firmware Version 4.6.x DHCP is supported. Important: already installed systems can be easily upgraded to DHCP. 3.6 Has the host always have to be a (Intel/AMD) PC? With Windows software always Based on LINUX SDK (Software Development Kit) every other host like ARM or MIPS is possible. Page 5 of 14

6 3.7 In what way is it possible to drive ArtistaNET within a proprietary DSP-system, but no WIN or Linux? In the Linux SDK the source cod e is exactly descr ibed. T his can be easi ly t ransferred t o t his DSP-system 3.8 Is a video transmission via ArtistaNET possible? No For video streaming resp. play of MPEG2 files ArtistaMEDIA is the perfect product. The same software basis / driver will be used and also the same application Software Artista Control Center (ACC). Please refer to ACC product info ACC Flyer for details. Depending from the load factor of the network the following transmission rates are realistic and tested: VGA 16 pictures/s SVGA 12 pictures/s (ArtistaNET-III: 100/s) XGA 5 pictures/s WXGA 4 pictures/s (ArtistaNET-III: 22/s) SXGA 3 pictures/s (ArtistaNET-III: 35/s) Full HD app. 2 pictures/s Example of transfer calculation within 100MBit network: capacity: 100MBit/sec. app. 30 MBit/sec. for protocol etc. = 70MBit/sec. free load 70MBit/sec = app. 10MByte/sec e.g. VGA: 640x480x2 Bytes data = Bytes 10Mbyte/ Byte = app. 16 frames / sec. net In this calculation the protocol overhead and all other additional data traffic on the network have to be considered. For customized projects we offer a driver-update, which allows transferring the changed parts of a picture only. This means a significant better use of the available bandwidth. We also offer a comfortable programmer interface for easy generation of user interfaces (e.g. replacement of membrane keyboards): TARA 3.9 How is disconnection resp. connection of ArtistaNET handled? Connecting and disconnecting is driver resp. SDK (which is based on the TCP/IP bus protocol) issue. Advantage: Your customized User-SW is not influenced from possible firmware updates. When an ArtistaNET is disconnected from the bus then the last content of the panel remains until new data is sent Is there still a picture if the Server connection is lost? Per default the picture stays stable even if the server / host connection is lost. ArtistaNET-II: From FW Revision 3.0 on there is a feature called keep image where the default behaviour could be changed to blank the screen if the connection is lost. This feature can be used with ACC or SDK. ArtistaNET-III: same behaviour than ArtistaNET-II Page 6 of 14

7 3.11 Is it possible to switch ArtistaNET on/off via remote? Yes, ArtistaNET has same functions like ArtistaUSB or ArtistaMEDIA On/off can be either controlled via driver or via the Artista SW-library 3.12 Is it possible during Artista Display Printer use to switch off the backlight and the content? Yes There is a Command Line Program (to be installed on server together with ADP). With this program the terminal can be switched "dark" How long does it take to boot an ArtistaNET from Power-Off? ArtistaNET-II: app. 60 seconds ArtistaNET-III: TBD, coming soon 3.14 Is it possible to control further input signals via the USB-Input? (e.g. 2 3 Push buttons) Yes But the firmware has to be adjusted on customized base (only for projects) 3.15 Are there other possibilities to realize additional Inputs/Outputs? An I²C bus interface is available, which could be used for additional I/O-ports for buttons, LEDs etc.; adjustment is customized (for projects) The advantage in comparison with above described USB-solution is the possible selection of cheaper components. Also this customized/additional hardware could be used with ArtistaUSB Is it possible to synchronize several ArtistaNET boards e.g. for transmission of partly pictures? Yes After the transmission of the picture in den secondary memory (invisible backbuffer memory) all ArtistaNET are simultaneously receiving the command to write the picture in the picture memory (visible framebuffer) Is it possible to send back other signals (e.g. RFID reader on USB interface or USB-mouse/keyboard) from ArtistaNET to server? For a customized solution: yes But there is no generic USB data pipe from the ArtistaNET back to the server to use USB devices over the network. Please contact Marketing for details. Page 7 of 14

8 3.18 Is it possible to replace the Boot Logo? FW Rev is prepared, to replace the boot logo via SDK or Artista Display Printer (ADP). For customer projects we are also offering a boot-logo service. Please ask Marketing for details. 4 Touchscreen Applications This functionality has been developed for customized user programs. Due to limited performance under WIN Extended Desktop (speed of reaction) the touch application should be used restricted. For project s a customized driv er solu tion is available o n request to improve performance for windows desktop based applications by hard ware assisted decompression of image data. Please ask Marketing for details. 4.1 What type of touch technology can be used with ArtistaNET? It is possible to directly connect resistive analogue touches in 4-wire-technology (e.g. DMC); resistive analogue 5-wire, Inductive, Infrared or SAW are currently not supported. Via the available USB-inputs it would be possible to use 5-wire resistive analogue -, inductive -, Infrared or SAW Touches; but a customized firmware adjustment is necessary. Currently the implementation of IR-Touch (26 82 ) is under evaluation. 4.2 Is it possible to drive more than 1 touch on a single ArtistaNET (Multi-Touch-System)? No, only 1 touch per ArtistaNET is possible. 4.3 In what way is the option touch realized within the Artista concept? The hardware is realized with a fast A/D-converter which is integrated within ArtistaNET via the firmware; on the Host resp. server a special touch driver, which is implemented in the SDK, is necessary to drive and control an unlimited number of touches without arbitration conflicts within WIN systems. 4.4 How to calibrate the touch screen? We are offering a calibration software tool under Windows to calibrate all Artista devices on the same way. For the customer it is also possible to write an own calibration program by using the Software Development Kit. Please refer to the SDK documentation and the provided sample applications for details. 4.5 Is it necessary to calibrate the touch screen with every Power-on? Page 8 of 14

9 No The values of calibration will be stored on ArtistaNET. After calibration the ArtistaNET unit can be used on every other PC also without new calibration. 4.6 Is there an intelligent and powerful "touch handler" available? Due to limitation of Windows for handling of only 1 touch at same time we are offering a SW file "touch handler". This makes sure that all touch requests from external terminals will be handled in a FIFO queue and neither a defect touch nor a "permanent use" is causing a system missfunction. 4.7 Is it possible to realize and use a WIN Touch-Keyboard? Yes There is for a WIN Keyboard SW for app. US$50 available. 4.8 In what way is the functionality right click processed? The response time is fixed with around 4s in the driver; this means after 4s pushing the touch the window will be opened. There is currently no plan to have a free selection of this response time. 5 Software 5.1 Is it possible to transmit a text file? Pure text files have to be transmitted as picture file al so. You can use f or exampl e the ImageMagick con vert program t o convert t extual in formation in to a bmp or jpg image. For more information please visit: Is it possible to directly transfer e.g. jpg images directly to ArtistaNET? For that an image processing is necessary. The SDK offers a hardware interface, but no picture processing. There are different libraries on the market, also freeware. On the ArtistaNET the pictures are processed in RGB565 format. We prefer the comprehensive Image Magick or Free Image library. 5.3 Is it possible to directly print e.g. a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file to a selected ArtistaNET? Yes The ADP (Artista Display Printer) "prints" any file (pdf, jpg, win, exel or others) directly to a defined ArtistaNET screen. All sizes and resolutions which are supported by ArtistaNET are selectable. Page 9 of 14

10 5.4 How many additional monitors can be driven with our Software? a) WIN Extended Desktop Driver (free of charge) It is possible to drive up to max. 10 monitors; 1 x Main Screen and 9 external screens It can be selected between static (always defined distribution to same screen) or dynamic (free distribution) - Desktop Assignment b) With our S(oftware)D(evelopment)K(it): SDK Rev. V4.0.0 (functionality ArtistaUSB- und -MEDIA implemented). It is based on the Artista WIN NetBus Treiber V2.0 for centralized server concepts (for projects we are able to change this to a more decentralized concept ask Marketing for details) Via our SDK theoretically an unlimited number of NET-terminals can be driven c) With Artista Control Center: User program for generation of slight shows; theoretically an unlimited number of NETterminals 5.5 What programming interface (API) will be supported with our Software Development Kit? Available for 32-Bit versions: Windows XP (SP 2 or higher) Windows Vista: customized version on request (for projects only), because Vista is not widely used among industrial customers Windows 7 (when using the extended desktop driver under Win7, please contact Marketing for a Beta-Version) Linux (SDK is available in source) Under develop / planned for 2010 / on request please ask Marketing: Windows7 (64-Bit) on request 3 rd party: Java based Network driver Linux X11 driver WIN Extended Desktop in dynamic association bzw. static association In the current release there is a pre-selection between dynamic association and static association during driver installation. Under dynamic association the external picture is jumping back to the main screen after plug-off of cable or power off of external unit. With static association the virtual graphic board is not switched-off. The picture shown on external monitor is kept virtual available. After plug-in of cable or power on of the external unit the original picture is again available. 5.7 WIN Extended Desktop in dynamic association or static association Page 10 of 14

11 In the current release there is a pre-selection between dynamic association and static association during driver installation. Under dynamic association the external picture is jumping back to the main screen after plug-off of cable or power off of external unit. With static association the virtual graphic board is not switched-off. The picture shown on external monitor is kept virtual available. After plug-in of cable or power on of the external unit the original picture is again available. 5.8 Is it possible for the ArtistaNET to realize a power management (e.g. brightness control) via network? Yes As an option for project implementation in a local area there is a Command Line Tool, which is activated via the WIN Scheduler. For this purpose the WIN NETBUS driver have to be installed. Functions: brightness control -, Switch on/off via timer functionality. 5.9 Is it possible to use the display in the Portrait Mode (90/180 degree)? This is not a function in the hardware, it is a software function. There is the possibility to generate pictures in portrait mode. These pictures can be transmitted via driver-interface and Artista SW-library. Alternative would be the use of A(rtista) C(ontrol) C(enter), an user SW for picture/ slight shows. ACC is recognizing the picture position automatically Is it possible to run Artista desktop driver in Clone Mode? No Clone Mode is currently not supported by Artista driver. Available on request, please ask Marketing What Software adjustments are necessary to implement a new TFT resolution? Depending on the project and the complexity is it necessary to implement the new resolution within following Artista - SW - products.
