iv Installing ArcInfo 9.3 on Sun Solaris

1 ArcInfo 9.3 Introduction ArcInfo encompasses three main parts: ArcGIS Desktop Windows NT /Windows 2000/Windows XP-based applications and architecture, hereafter collectively referred to as Windows. ArcInfo Workstation Arc, ArcEdit, ArcPlot, ARC Macro Language (AML ), and Open Development Environment (ODE) for all supported UNIX and Windows platforms. ArcSDE The geographic information system (GIS) gateway to database management systems (DBMSs). The goal of this installation guide is to lead you through the process of installing the Workstation portion of the ArcInfo system on Sun Solaris platforms. To install ArcInfo Workstation on a Windows Intel platform, see the ArcInfo installation guide for Windows Intel located on the ArcGIS Desktop CD ROM for the platform. ArcInfo and ArcSDE are closely integrated. ArcSDE allows you to build and share multiuser spatial databases in your desired relational database management system. You ll find the ArcSDE books and installation media in this package as well. ArcSDE for Coverages is also included and can be used without any special licenses or keycodes. It will serve your shared file-based datasets (such as coverages, shapefiles, and library layers) across any TCP/IP network. Refer to the ArcSDE for Coverages CD ROM for installation instructions and more information. ArcInfo platform support When using ArcInfo, you should think of your entire computer network of Windows and UNIX machines as your platform for GIS. ArcInfo allows you to use any computer you wish on your network. You can install either or both ArcGIS Desktop and ArcInfo Workstation on Windows Intel, or you can install ArcInfo Workstation on UNIX platforms. Only one license manager is required on your network to manage your ArcInfo seats across these different computers.

2 Installing ArcInfo 9.3 on Sun Solaris Setting up a geoprocessing server ArcInfo Workstation is a server-based implementation of the Arc program and its many geoprocessing and analysis commands. ArcToolbox, an ArcGIS Desktop application, can process jobs remotely using a geoprocessing server. A geoprocessing server can be set up on any desired computer on your network. It can also accept AML scripts and other remote geoprocessing tasks from another computer. Using the Geoprocessing Server, you can schedule jobs to run at any time, such as in the evening when your system is not in use. If your goal is to install a minimal configuration for ArcInfo Workstation in order to set up a geoprocessing server, during the ArcInfo Workstation installation process, choose the option to install core ArcInfo. This will allow you to perform a minimal installation of ArcInfo Workstation, which includes everything you need to run a geoprocessing server. See Setting up the Geoprocessing Server to set up and start a server. System requirements Your computer is required to meet the minimum requirements to install ArcInfo. For the latest requirements, see the ArcInfo online Web page at Minimum system requirements The required Sun environment includes the following: Operating System Sun Solaris 9 / Sun Solaris 10 Required Patches Sun Solaris 9: / / Sun Solaris 10: Windows System CDE or OpenWindows Memory 128 MB minimum (256 MB recommended) Disk Space Up to 770 MB for all ArcInfo software programs Up to 100 MB for all ArcInfo Samples Swap Space 256 MB minimum (will vary with your application size) 512 MB recommended Use the following command to obtain your operating system version: % uname -r (or uname -X for more details) The disk space requirement for an ArcInfo software installation depends on the software programs you install. The table below shows the disk space requirements (in megabytes) for ArcInfo. ArcInfo 625 ArcCOGO 13 ArcExpress 1 ArcGrid 34 ArcPress 9 ArcNetwork 4 ArcScan 1 ArcTIN 40 ArcStorm 43

Installing ArcInfo Note ArcInfo software includes the data conversion modules, plotter drivers, database integrators, ArcTools, the Geoprocessing Server, and ODE. The disk space requirement for an ArcInfo Samples installation depends on the samples you install. The table below shows the disk space requirements (in megabytes) for ArcInfo Samples. Samples Size All data sources 93 ArcTools Tutorial Data 33 Understanding GIS 3 Redlands, California 44 Printer Test Plots 11 Open Development Environment: Sample Motif Application 2 For more information on samples, refer to the README.TXT file located in the directory in which the data was installed. Your workstation must be configured for enough swap space to ensure proper executable initialization and data processing. The larger the dataset used during processing, the larger the swap space you ll need. For instructions on how to add swap space to your workstation and other details, refer to the ArcInfo Workstation system_administrators_guide under $ARCHOME/documentation. Supported databases ArcInfo has these key database capabilities from which you can work with tabular data: Database Integrator (DBI) allows users to connect from ArcInfo Workstation to tabular information in a DBMS. ArcSDE is the ArcInfo extension that provides a DBMS gateway for managing geodatabases in your chosen DBMS. Each of these has different levels of DBMS support. This section describes DBI support in ArcInfo Workstation. Refer to the ArcSDE CD ROMs and installation guides for more information on ArcSDE DBMS support.

4 Installing ArcInfo 9.3 on Sun Solaris DBI allows you to work with DBMS tables in ArcInfo Workstation. The following table shows the DBMS versions and modules used to build and certify DBI in this release. Software Kernel Network Informix CSDK 3.00.UC2 No additional modules Oracle9i (Oracle9i Server ) SQL*Net 9 Refer to the Support Web site at to find out about additional versions supported for each DBMS. The DBMS is accessed through its networking module (for example, SQL*Net for Oracle ). The particular networking implementation for your DBMS will dictate whether a remote DBMS connection starts a process on the remote node or on the server. Your DBMS vendor may require a licensed copy of the networking tool on the remote node. Note ArcSDE requirements: ArcInfo supports ArcSDE 8.x or higher. Preparing for installation The installation of ArcInfo requires system administrator privileges. WARNING to existing users The installation procedure will create a directory called arcexe9x. It will overwrite any existing arcexe9x directory. If you are running ArcInfo 8.3 or prior, your directory will not be overwritten. If you choose to overwrite or purge your current $ARCHOME directory, make sure that you have the proper permissions. Preserve the $ARCHOME/tables directory to access any ArcInfo libraries you may have set up. Save the license file ($ARCHOME/sysgen/license.dat) for reference and any geo_dataset documentation you may have created with DOCUMENT.AML. Then preserve any customized files that you have created for your site. These customized files may reside in any of the $ARCHOME subdirectories listed below:

Installing ArcInfo Directory arcstorm arctools database digform etc igl63exe locale odetools plotters startup stations symbols sysgen File type.dbf files customlib (possibly the whole arctools directory).dbs files digitizer format files arcpress custom files customized IGL fonts customized language environments customized ODE applications/tools customized plotter parameter files custom startup AML scripts customized station files custom symbolsets and fonts the pltque file After installing ArcInfo, install your custom files in the appropriate new arcexe9x subdirectories. For more information on saving your custom symbolset files, see Symbolsets > Saving older symbolsets to the current version in ArcDoc, the online documentation. Obtaining a license information file for ArcInfo All installations for ArcInfo must obtain a license information file from ESRI Keycode Support before running the installation. However, if you have already obtained a license file for ArcInfo 9.x, you do not need to obtain a new one. The ArcInfo 9.x license file will work with this version of ArcInfo. If you are in the United States, you can request your new keycodes on the Internet at Follow the instructions presented on the Web site. In most cases, you will receive a response containing your new license information file within 24 hours. If there are issues with your account, you will be contacted by an ESRI representative to help resolve them and to generate your license information file. If you do not have Internet access, please contact Customer Service via phone or to request a Keycode Request Form. Customer Service will or fax the form to you to be completed and returned. Phone: keycodes@esri.com If you are a user residing outside the United States, please contact your local ESRI distributor for keycodes.

6 Installing ArcInfo 9.3 on Sun Solaris Accessing your license agreement file The license agreement file is now available for your review in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. The English version is located on the CD ROM distribution media under the license directory. Other language versions can be accessed at To proceed with the software installation, you will first need to agree to the terms of the license. Installing ArcInfo Workstation from the CD ROM Solaris includes Volume Management software, which automatically mounts and provides immediate access to your CD ROM. When using Volume Management software, place the ArcInfo CD into your CD ROM drive. At this point, the ArcInfo disc is mounted. Do not use uppercase letters in the pathname to the ArcInfo installation directory or in the directory itself (for example, do not install ArcInfo in a directory named /usr/install). For security reasons, do not install ArcInfo as root. Make sure that the user account that will install ArcInfo has write permissions to the installation directory.

Installing ArcInfo The install command has five options: Usage: install <-help -load -remove -verify -lmhostid> Type install -help to read more about the installation procedure. To start the ArcInfo installation, type the following command from anywhere on your system: % /cdrom/cdrom0/install -load This will start the license agreement dialog box. You will be requested to agree to the license agreement located on your installation CD ROM under the license directory. Please read the license agreement file appropriate for your locale. I have read and agree to the enclosed license agreement. If you have read and agree with the terms in the enclosed license agreement type 'yes' to continue the installation process, if not press <return> or type 'no' to exit installation process. [no] You must type yes to proceed with the installation and start the dialog box for the ArcInfo software or Samples installation procedure, which is menu driven. Default selections are noted in brackets [ ]. To obtain a list of options or online help, type? at any prompt. You can quit the installation procedure at any time by typing quit or q. To return to a previous question, type the caret, ^. To install ArcInfo, enter a carriage return or type 1. By default, the installation procedure will install the core ArcInfo functionality, plotter drivers, and data converters. If you do not wish to install the plotter drivers or data converters, type none at the prompt. To install a selected set of plotter drivers or data converters, type? at the prompt and enter the numbers for the drivers or converters you wish to install. The database integrators, extensions (e.g., ArcCOGO), ArcTools, and ODE will not be installed by default. Type? at the prompt and enter the numbers of the extensions you wish to install. To install the ArcInfo Samples, type 2. By default, the installation procedure will install all the Samples datasets. To install a selected set, type? at the prompt and enter the numbers for the samples you wish to install. If you did not install an extension or a sample and later realize that you need it, you can install it using the same procedure outlined above. Type install -remove to selectively remove any or all installed portions of ArcInfo and the extensions you choose. Type install -verify to verify that all files are installed for ArcInfo and the extensions. The verify option can be used at a later date to check whether or not a required file has been deleted. To do this, you must use the CD that contains the original 01.toc file. Type install -lmhostid to display the hostid and hostname of the machine on which ArcInfo was installed. These messages are displayed as follows:

8 Installing ArcInfo 9.3 on Sun Solaris The FLEXlm host ID of this machine is: <FLEXlm hostid> The hostname of this machine is: <machine name> Setting up your account ESRI recommends that ArcInfo be executed from a C shell. The following instructions are for a C shell environment setup. To use ArcInfo, add the following lines to your.login or.cshrc file: setenv OPENWINHOME <path to OpenWindows installation directory> setenv ARCHOME <path to ArcInfo installation directory>/arcexe9x setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH $ARCHOME/lib:$OPENWINHOME/lib:/usr/dt/lib setenv DISPLAY <hostname>:0.0 alias arc \$ARCHOME/bin/arc alias info \$ARCHOME/bin/info Note The license manager requires the DISPLAY variable to be set. To use Samples, add the following line to your.login or.cshrc file: setenv AIDATA <path to Samples install directory>/samples To enable the changes, type: % source <.login or.cshrc> The $ARCHOME/Xenv directory contains sample system startup files, such as the.login and.cshrc files. Refer to the ArcInfo Workstation system_administrators_guide under $ARCHOME/documentation. Installing the ArcInfo license manager The ArcInfo license manager is installed by default when you install ArcInfo. Refer to the license reference guide (lmrefguide.htm) for a detailed discussion of the license manager. You can find this guide located under $ARCHOME/documentation. Starting the license manager These instructions show you how to start the license manager interactively. If you want to start the license manager automatically at boot-up time, or if you have other applications that use the license manager, refer to the license reference guide (lmrefguide.htm). The license manager should be executed as the owner of the ArcInfo installation directory. Start the license manager: % cd $ARCHOME/sysgen %./lmgrd -c license.dat > /dev/console Output can also be redirected to a file or suppressed by redirecting it to /dev/null. When installing a multiserver-redundant network, the license manager will have to be started on each of the servers identified in the license.dat file.

Installing ArcInfo Verify the status of the license manager: % $ARCHOME/sysgen/lmutil lmstat -a -c license.dat You can now type arc at the system prompt on any of the workstations on your network and begin using ArcInfo. Installing the license manager for existing users of ArcInfo 8.x ArcInfo uses FLEXlm v11 license manager. The license manager for ArcInfo 9.x is installed when you install ArcInfo Workstation. You will need a new license.dat file for ArcInfo 9.x. Your license file for 8.x will not work with ArcInfo 9.x, and your license file for version 9.x will not work with version 8.x. If you intend to use ArcInfo 9.x and 8.x concurrently, you must maintain a separate license manager and license file for each. Copy your new ArcInfo 9.x license file into the new ArcInfo 9.x installation directory (arcexe9x/sysgen). Make sure the $ARCHOME variable is pointing to the new arcexe9x directory. Restart the license manager as the owner of the ArcInfo 9.x installation directory: % cd <path to where ArcInfo 9.x is installed>/arcexe9x/sysgen %./lmgrd -c license.dat > /dev/console You can now type arc at the system prompt on any of the workstations on your network and begin using ArcInfo. Note If you are switching between using ArcInfo 9.x and 8.x on your system, you must not have any Arc sessions open at the time. You also need to do one of the following: 1. Change your.cshrc or.login files (C shell) or.kshrc or.profile (K shell) references and source the changes (C shell). 2. Use aliases for the different ArcInfo versions that replace each other s environment exactly, with no reference in.cshrc or.login files (C shell) or.kshrc or.profile (K shell) references. Do not change ArcInfo variables at the command line when you have references to them in your.cshrc,.kshrc,.login, or.profile files. This will produce unpredictable results. Setting up the Geoprocessing Server After installation, you should change the ownership and permissions of the following geoprocessing server executables. You need root access to do this: % su # cd $ARCHOME/bin # chown root arcrqmgr lockmgr # chmod 6755 arcrqmgr lockmgr

10 Installing ArcInfo 9.3 on Sun Solaris Next, you should add the name of the server instance and the instance port number to the /etc/services file. To see the existing server instance name and port information, read the $ARCHOME/gpserver/services.rqm file. # cd /etc Add the instance to the services file as per the example here: esri_gps 5261/tcp #ESRI Geoprocessing Server If the services file already includes this port number for another service, you will need to find a unique port number. Therefore, if you use a port number in the /etc/services file, which differs from the port number in the $ARCHOME/gpserver/services.rqm file, you must edit the $ARCHOME/gpserver/services.rqm file to create a match. The server instance names must also match between the /etc/services file and the $ARCHOME/gpserver/services.rqm file. If more than one service name exists, the Geoprocessing Server will use the first one it encounters. Now give write permission to the $ARCHOME/gpserver/tmp_results directory for geoprocessing users. # cd $ARCHOME/gpserver # chmod 777 tmp_results To start the Geoprocessing Server, make sure you are not root and that you are logged in as the same person that installed ArcInfo. Then execute the gpmon command. % $ARCHOME/bin/gpmon o start p gps Setting up ArcTools (optional) Add the following line to your.login or.cshrc file: setenv ATHOME $ARCHOME/arctools The ArcTools menus have been designed to display with a Courier 12-point font, but you may use any other fixed-width font of your choice. Do not use a non-fixed-width font because it will corrupt the positioning of widgets on the ArcTools menus. To set the font, refer to the ArcInfo Workstation system_administrators_guide under $ARCHOME/documentation. Setting up ArcStorm (optional) After installation, you should change the ownership and permissions of the following ArcStorm executables. You need root access to do this: % su # cd $ARCHOME/bin # chown root asmaster asrecovery asuser se asutility abservice asbuild wservice # chmod 6755 asmaster asrecovery asuser se asutility abservice asbuild wservice

Installing ArcInfo Now set the following aliases in your.login or.cshrc file: alias se alias cpdb alias mkdb alias ws alias rmdb alias chowndb alias abs alias dbdef alias checkdbids alias traceinfo alias wservice Setting up ArcPress (optional) \$ARCHOME/bin/se \$ARCHOME/bin/cpdb \$ARCHOME/bin/mkdb \$ARCHOME/bin/ws \$ARCHOME/bin/rmdb \$ARCHOME/bin/chowndb \$ARCHOME/bin/abservice \$ARCHOME/bin/dbdef \$ARCHOME/bin/checkdbids \$ARCHOME/bin/traceinfo \$ARCHOME/bin/wservice To use ArcPress from the system command prompt, add the following line to your.login or.cshrc file: set path = ($path $ARCHOME/bin) By default, ArcPress creates temporary scratch files in your system s temp directory. You may use a different directory by setting the APRESSTMPDIR variable. For more information on using the APRESSTMPDIR variable, see Setting a directory for temporary file space in ArcDoc, the online documentation, under Cartography > Printing and exporting maps with ArcPress > Using ArcPress > Before you start ArcPress. If you re upgrading from ArcPress 1, follow the steps below to use ArcPress for ArcInfo: 1. Remove the APRESSHOME system variable from your.login or.cshrc file. 2. Remove $APRESSHOME/bin from your $path variable. 3. Modify the $ARCHOME/plotters/arcpress.dev file to reflect your site s printing environment. Do not replace it with the arcpress.dev file from your ArcInfo installation. Some printer drivers have been renamed. Installing ArcGIS Desktop on Windows Intel (optional) You can also install and use ArcInfo on Windows Intel. All of the new ArcGIS Desktop capabilities are delivered on this platform. Refer to the installation instructions on either the ArcInfo Workstation or the ArcGIS Desktop CD ROM for Windows Intel. Installing ArcSDE (optional) Refer to the installation instructions for ArcSDE located on the ArcSDE CD ROM media. Using direct connect with ArcInfo ArcInfo users can connect to and use spatial data directly in a supported database without having to use an ArcSDE application server. This method is called direct connect.

12 Installing ArcInfo 9.3 on Sun Solaris The choice between using an application server (ArcSDE) or using direct connect to access spatial data residing in a supported database is discussed in Understanding ArcSDE. This book is available on the ESRI Software Documentation Library CD. Each ArcInfo installation has the direct connect capability built into it. However, there are some database administration steps that must be completed before attempting to connect to a spatial database. The ESRI Software Documentation Library CD includes all the documentation required to set up a direct connection to a spatial database. Refer to the data management book that discusses Direct Connections, as well as the ArcSDE Configuration Guide for your required database. A user example The following ArcPlot example shows how to connect to an SDE dataset, define a layer, set a mapextent, and draw features in the defined layer. It assumes that all direct connect administration steps have been performed. Use the ArcDoc Help file for command descriptions. Arcplot: dataset connect world abbey esri_sde world password Arcplot: layer define rivers sde world rivers feature line Arcplot: layer list Layer: rivers, Source SDE Layer: WATERS, Feature Line Arcplot: mapextent layer rivers Arcplot: layerdraw rivers Troubleshooting the installation Refer to the license reference guide (lmrefguide.htm), located in $ARCHOME/documentation, for the most common license manager installation problems and their possible solutions.
