5 IPS/ICPS Software-Based CAR/LAR Release Unisys is pleased to announce the availability of the Unisys Check Processing Enterprise Solutions Item Processing System (IPS)/Image Check Processing System (ICPS) Software-Based Courtesy Amount Recognition (CAR)/Legal Amount Recognition (LAR) feature as a separately packaged application for use at image-enabled document processing sites. Although this is the initial release of the IPS/ICPS Software-Based CAR/LAR feature, it uses the release numbering convention consistent with recent releases of other recent document processing applications

6 Section 1 Enhancements and New Features The new IPS/ICPS Software-Based CAR/LAR feature provides for the benefits of software-based Courtesy Amount Recognition (CAR) and Legal Amount Recognition (LAR) technology to the ICPS user base and prospects. After each block of work is captured in a prime pass, the block is presented to a software-based recognition system for Amount Recognition. Once the block has completed recognition processing a post process identifies the amount and it is placed in the IPS database. Once the amounts are in the database, the items can proceed through the normal ICPS workflow of Amount Entry (only items without a recognized amount), Data Correction, Reject Reentry, Balancing and Repass. The IPS/ICPS Software-Based CAR/LAR application interfaces with either of two software-based CAR/LAR recognition systems SoftCAR+ from Unisys Systems & Technology Payment Systems (PS) group or Check Reader from A2iA. A new ICPS Windows NT application interface (IPS/ICPS Software-Based CAR/LAR application) for each recognition system is part of the release. This interface checks to see when a block is ready for CAR processing and then provides the appropriate information to the CAR recognition system. When notified that the results are available, this interface processes the results into a CAR Results Data (CRD) file for ICPS and then creates a CAR Results Ready (CRR) file to let IPS know the block is ready for further processing. Configuration flexibility is provided. The application can run on the NT SRM/Image File Server (IFS) or on a separate PC and can handle multiple sorters. On the ClearPath, a new IPS Host program, Soft CAR Update (SCU), reads the block s CRD file and applies the CAR results to all prime, reject, and correction item strings. It then sends a Block Ready to IPS. At this point, the block is now treated like ordinary ICPS

8 A2iA Environment The Check Reader from A2iA can be used in the following configurations: On an NT SRM - Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 4 - IIPS/NDP On a stand-alone PC - Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 5 Power Encode Environment ICPS PE or NTPE or greater, including all interdependencies listed in the release notes. Development Environment Microsoft Visual C for 32-bit development with a minimum of Service Pack 3 is required for customizing the IPS/ICPS SoftCAR NT application (via the Post Processor DLL). Detailed information for developers on the Customization Opportunities is provided in the A Series ICPS Customization Guide. Section 3 Migration Requirements Sort Pattern Generation Advice Not all of the existing CAR parameters maintained in the SPG are used in the Software- Based CAR/LAR environment. The parameters that still apply are: The Maximum CAR Amount for Forced Amount Entry is used. The CAR Location ID in the selector is used as the Document Type. The Trust Soft Rejects is used if the SoftCAR+ recognition is being used. All other SPG parameters are passed through so they are available in the CMOs

9 ENV File Changes ENV was modified for two new device parameters, Soft CAR Type and RTC Location. Soft CAR Type indicates if SoftCAR is being used and if so, which recognition system, SoftCAR+ or A2iA. RTC location defines the computer name where the RTC files are written. This can be an NT SRM or a separate PC. Operational Changes There can be up to nine copies of the Soft CAR Update (SCU) program for each Test System. IPS commands for SCU control are START, RESTART, ABORT, FINISH, and DIS. Additional commands are available to force completion or redirect files. Only one copy of the IPS SoftCAR+ application may be connected to a single SoftCAR+ Manager server. SoftCAR Recognition WorkFlow The workflow for the IPS/ICPS Software-Based CAR/LAR feature includes the following steps: Items are processed on the sorter, images are captured on the SRM and the codeline data is placed in the IPS database. Once a block completes prime capture, images and data are sent to the recognition engine for processing. As the engine processes items it returns data to the ICPS SoftCAR Update application. As the ICPS SoftCAR Update application receives the data it performs a post process to analyze the data and determine the amount as appropriate. When the recognition and post process is complete for the block of work, the IPS database is updated with the amounts and processing then continues as it would for the Hard CAR workflow. Data Entry screens in Work Flow Manager have been modified to display Soft CAR status of blocks

10 Section 4 Considerations There are some items to consider when implementing the IPS/ICPS Software-Based CAR/LAR feature. These considerations are: A Document Parameter file must be created/maintained for the recognition engines to use during the processing of each item. The process is different based on the recognition engine being used and is described below. If using the SoftCAR+ recognition engine, the Document Parameter file is created/maintained by the Unisys Systems & Technology Payment Systems (PS) group. This must be coordinated prior to the installation of the SoftCAR feature. If using the A2iA recognition engine, the Document Parameter file is services/customer created/maintained using the A2iA Configuration Utility. Since CAR processing is not inline with capture but is a post capture process, there is a slight delay before the first block is available to ICPS workstation applications. This is called Priming the Pump. Once the pump is primed there should not be a noticeable impact to the workflow. With the SoftCAR release, and succeeding releases, the misread rate was improved by adding the post-processing algorithm. (Refer to the SoftCAR+ release notes for details.) The default value for this feature is enabled, with minimum amount value set to $1.00 and maximum amount value to $10, Comparisons with documents should be performed to determine if this feature is to be enabled. Suggested values for the dollar amounts are: minimum $0.00, maximum as allowed by SoftCAR+ software. If existing hardware CAR Location IDs within the Sort pattern are to be used, it may be necessary to map a CAR Location ID to a different Document Type in the Post Processor CMO used by the NT SoftCAR+ application. The CAR Location ID, stored for each item in the image IDX file, is used as the Document Type during SoftCAR+ processing. Depending on the definitions within your custom CAR Parameters Directory, it may be necessary to change or map the CAR Location ID to a different Document Type, e.g. change CAR Location ID 1 to Document Type 2. Sample code (which can be enabled by removing the comment delimiters) is provided within the PP_UpdateItemsParms CMO function in the Post Processor DLL Important: A CAR Location ID (from the Sort Pattern) must be mapped to an existing Document Type in the CAR Parameters File Directory. The Document Type must exist in the snippet.ini file. If the CAR Location ID does not exist in the CAR Parameters File, the item will default to SoftCAR+ processing coordinates that may not be appropriate for the image. This will cause lower read rates

11 If SoftCAR is set but not available, an individual block can be forced complete using an IPS command or another SoftCAR server can be directed to process the block. Note: When an individual block is forced complete, the associated RTC file is still on the NT SRM RTC directory and needs to be manually deleted. If not, when the SoftCAR+ application is started again, it will grab that RTC file and try to find the already moved, associated IDX file. Since it cannot, the application will display the following fatal error message and terminate: The system cannot find the file specified. IDX File \\SM903\CAPTURE\\ICPS\Itbbbb When the dongle limit is reached, the ICPS SoftCAR+ application program displays a message in its status window and waits for a message from the SoftCAR+ Manager (via the OCX interface) before continuing. The SoftCAR+ manager displays a message with the expected resume time. Section 5 Corrections None (initial release). 12 Section 7 Installation Process Overview Listed below are some notes regarding preparation of the devices for installation and some post installation parameter settings. IPS/ICPS Software-Based CAR/LAR Installation Refer to Installation Notes on the IPS/ICPS Software-Based CAR/LAR media for instructions on the NT programs that need to be installed. Review the sections below for other installation information. ClearPath and Windows NT Security The IPS NT applications use the User and Password of the logged on user of the NT server on which they run. This means that an identical UserCode and Password pair must be set up in the ClearPath security system. This does not prohibit the common practice of associating a ClearPath UserCode with an IPS test system. The IPS NT applications create files on the ClearPath via a ClearPath Directory Share that can have a UserCode associated with it. The naming convention for the Directory Share that is used by the IPS NT applications contains the test system character. This enables you to have the files created under the UserCode defined in the Directory Share, not the UserCode into which the NT Server is logged. Note: The NT server user code and password must be defined on the NX as a user. Refer to Section 5 of the IPS Installation Guide for details. In addition, by using the Permanent Directory feature on the NX for the CRD and CRR files, the user codes accessing and creating these files do not need to be privileged. To setup a permanent directory for SoftCAR, perform the following steps: 1. Create a share (in NX-Admin) called ADMIN directory is <IPS Family>:*. Allow only an administrator access to this share. This share will not be used by the application, only for setting up

13 2. Do a MKDIR DIR (from an NT command prompt) on the share you created in step 1. This creates a permanent directory. Note: The name DIR is a reserved name and that this must be done from a command prompt and not in Explorer. 3. Create a directory (using Explorer) under DIR called SOFTCAR. 4. Use NX Explorer extensions to do the following: a. Highlight the SOFTCAR directory. b. Click on Properties. c. Click on Permissions. d. Assign all three permissions to the user codes of each ICPS SOFTCAR application PC. e. Assign all three permissions to the user code under which the IPS application is running on the NX. f. Click on the Advanced button. g. Set to propagate permission to files and directories. 5. Create the SOFTCARt share with the directory <IPS Family>/*DIR/SOFTCAR. ClearPath Directory Shares Each IPS test system that runs SoftCAR requires a Directory Share on the ClearPath host. Refer to Section 5 of the IPS Installation Guide for details. Credentials for SoftCAR For the IPS application on the ClearPath host to create the Ready to Car files on the NT server, the user code that IPS is running under must have credentials established giving access to the NT server where the IPS/ICPS Software-Based CAR/LAR application is running. Refer to Section 5 of the IPS Installation Guide for details. Windows Event Logging The NT applications write information to the Windows NT application Event Log during processing. Depending on the number of applications running and type of logging selected, the NT Event Log s setting should be set to an appropriate size and the log wrapping option set in order to retain a reasonable amount of information

14 Section 8 Restrictions and Known Limitations This release is for use with ClearPath IPS applications at ICPS processing sites using IFS/SRMs only. All testing was completed using SoftCAR+ dongles of 800 documents per minute per SRM/IFS.
