Upgrading R/Evolution Storage Systems This guide describes considerations and procedures for upgrading the following R/Evolution storage systems: 2000 Series to 2002 Series storage systems 2000 Series to 3000 Series storage systems 2002 Series to 3000 Series storage systems These upgrades are accomplished by replacing the existing controller modules with any model of upgraded controller modules. In a dual-controller system, both controllers must be the same model. All upgrades will follow the general procedures detailed in this document, however there are instructions pertaining to specific upgrades throughout this document. Follow the appropriate instructions for the type of upgrade that you will perform. Note: In this document the term controller(s) indicates one controller for a single-controller system or both controllers for a dual-controller system. Planning for the upgrade Before starting the upgrade, it is important for you to understand any preconditions that may exist with your storage system configuration, as well as post-upgrade procedures that must be performed before restoring the system to a fully functional state. Your R/Evolution storage system can be upgraded without any loss of user data. However, during the upgrade the system and attached hosts will be powered down and all existing controllers will be removed and be replaced with upgraded controllers. Due to the nature of the upgrade, all I/O must be stopped before the upgrade and the system will be unavailable until the upgrade is complete. Allow a minimum of two hours to complete the upgrade process and 3000 Series controller expansion ports use mini-sas connectors. If your storage system includes 2U12 drive enclosures that are attached to the controller(s) via SAS (8470) cables, you must purchase new mini-sas (8088) to SAS (8470) cables to connect the new controller(s) to the first drive enclosure. If you are upgrading to a 2002 Series system, have your micro-db-9 to DB9 serial cable ready, as well as a management host that is configured for serial connection to the new controllers in case the network port IP addresses change during the upgrade. This is especially pertinent if your configuration currently uses DHCP for the network port addresses. If you are upgrading to a 3000 Series system, have either your RS mm jack cable or USB mini 5 cable ready, as well as a management host that is configured for serial connection to the new controllers in case the network port IP addresses change during the upgrade. This is especially pertinent if your configuration currently uses DHCP for the network port addresses. If you use licensed features, you may have to obtain a new license from your vendor after completing the upgrade. To obtain a new license, contact your vendor and have your licensing paperwork available. You will need to request a new license be issued under the upgrade license exchange program, and you may be asked to submit additional information such as the serial numbers and firmware version of the new controllers. If changing host interfaces from one that supports AssuredRemote to one that does not support AssuredRemote, before upgrading you must delete all replication sets, and after upgrading you will no longer be able to use AssuredRemote functionality. For the procedure to delete a replication set, see the RAIDar User Guide for your current product. P/N Rev. A June

Preparing for the upgrade Resolve any storage system problems If the storage system has any problems, such as hardware warnings or vdisks whose health is Degraded, resolve the problems before starting the upgrade. Gather documents and license information You must locate the following documents and have them available before beginning the upgrade: For 2000 to 2002 Series upgrades: 2000 Series Reference Guide Installing Optional Software for Microsoft Windows Server 2002 Series RAIDar User Guide 2002 Series Obtaining and Installing the License Certificate File For 2000 to 3000 Series upgrades: 2000 Series Reference Guide Installing Optional Software for Microsoft Windows Server 3000 Series RAIDar User Guide 3000 Series Obtaining and Installing the License Certificate File For 2002 to 3000 Series upgrades: 2002 Series RAIDar User Guide Installing Optional Software for Microsoft Windows Server 3000 Series RAIDar User Guide 3000 Series Obtaining and Installing the License Certificate File These documents are available by consulting your vendor Series products have an older version of the RAIDar web-based management interface. To minimize system downtime, before beginning the upgrade procedure read either the 2002 Series RAIDar User Guide or the 3000 Series RAIDar User Guide to become familiar with the new version of RAIDar. If you are using licensed features, have the licensing information available in case a new license must be installed after the upgrade. Install the latest firmware Verify that the storage system to be upgraded is running the latest applicable firmware. If the system is not running the latest firmware, update the firmware before proceeding. If you are upgrading from a 2000 Series controller and are unsure how to obtain and update firmware, see the 2000 Series Reference Guide. If you are upgrading from a 2002 Series storage system and are unsure how to obtain and update firmware, see the 2002 Series RAIDar User Guide. P/N Rev. A June

Record configuration settings Before you physically upgrade the controller(s), use RAIDar and the appropriate worksheet provided at the end of this guide to record your configuration settings, which might not persist through the upgrade. If you are upgrading from a 2000 Series controller and are unfamiliar with RAIDar or how to access it, see the 2000 Series Reference Guide. If you are upgrading from a 2002 Series storage system and are unfamiliar with RAIDar or how to access it, see the 2002 Series RAIDar User Guide. Download controller logs As a safety precaution, capture all other existing controller parameters, such as the IP addresses of your management controllers, by saving the controller logs to your management host. This can be done by accessing the FTP utility and running the get logs command. In the event of a support issue after the upgrade, the data contained within the event logs will be useful. Follow the steps below for collecting the debug logs: 1. In RAIDar, prepare to use FTP: a. Determine the network-port IP addresses of the system s controllers. b. Verify that the system s FTP service is enabled. c. Verify that the user you will log in as has permission to use the FTP interface. 2. Open a Command Prompt (Windows) or a terminal window (UNIX) and navigate to the destination directory for the log file. 3. Enter: ftp controller-network-address For example: ftp Log in as an FTP user. 5. Enter: get logs filename.txt where filename is recommended to be yyyymmdd_ftp_systemname_controller-id. For example: get logs _ftp_Storage2_A.txt Wait for the message Transfer complete to appear 6. Quit the FTP session. 7. Repeat step 3 through step 6 on the partner controller to collect its unique MC debug information. Remove mappings and hosts If the new controller(s) have a different host interface type than the current controller(s) or additional host interfaces, you will need to remove the mappings and the host WWN nicknames. Ensure that I/O has been stopped and the cache has been verified to be cleared of I/O and then do the following in RAIDar: For 2000 Series upgrades: 1. Go to Manage > Volume Management > Volume Mapping > Map Hosts to Volume and remove all mapping information from all volumes. 2. Go to Manage > Volume Management > Volume Mapping > Manage Host List and delete all host WWN nicknames. For 2002 Series upgrades: 1. Go to Provisioning > Default Mapping OR Provisioning > Explicit Mapping and remove all mapping information from all volumes. 2. Go to Hosts > Provisioning > Remove Hosts and delete all host WWN nicknames. P/N Rev. A June

Install the latest host software Hosts that are connected to the storage system, that are running Microsoft Windows Server, and that are using VDS, VSS or MPIO must be updated with the new software for the upgraded storage system. Obtain the latest MPIO, CAPI Proxy, and SES driver for the upgraded storage system and install the software on such hosts. If you are unsure how to perform this installation, see the Installing Optional Software for Microsoft Windows Server guide. Shut down the storage system Perform the following steps to finish preparing for the upgrade: For 2000 Series upgrades: 1. Stop all I/O to the storage system. 2. Power off all hosts that are connected to the storage system and disconnect all host cables from the controllers. 3. Gracefully shut down the storage system. a. In RAIDar, go to Manage > Restart System > Shut Down/Restart. b. If you have a single controller, select Shutdown RAID Controller A in the Shut Down panel. c. If you have a dual controller system, select Shutdown both RAID controllers in the Shut Down Panel. d. After making the appropriate selection, click Shut Down. After clicking Shut Down, a warning message might appear. This is an informational message that requires no action. e. Click OK to confirm the operation. f. Log out of RAIDar 4. Verify that the OK to Remove LED on the back of the controller(s) is lit, and that the Cache Status LED is not blinking. WARNING The Cache Status LED blinks to indicate that the controller s cache contains data that has NOT been written to the disk. If the Cache Status LED remains blinking after shutting down the controller, call customer support before proceeding. 5. After confirming that the controllers have been shut down, power off the controller enclosure and then power off any connected drive enclosures. 6. After verifying that all enclosures are powered off, label the cables that are currently attached to the controller enclosure, being sure to include port number and which controller the cable is plugged into (for example, Controller A, port 0 ). For 2002 Series upgrades: 1. Stop all I/O to the storage system. 2. Power off or disconnect host cables from all hosts that are connected to the storage system. 3. Gracefully shut down the storage system. a. In RAIDar, go to Tools > Shutdown or Restart Controller. b. Using the drop-down menu next to Operation, select Shut down. c. If you have a single controller, use the drop-down menu next to Controller type and select Storage, then use the drop down-menu next to Controller and select A. d. If you have a dual controller system, use the drop-down menu next to Controller type and select Storage, then use the drop down-menu next to Controller and select Both. e. After making the appropriate selections, click Shut down now. f. Click OK to confirm the operation. g. Log out of RAIDar. P/N Rev. A June

4. Verify that the OK to Remove LED on the back of the controller(s) is lit, and that the Cache Status LED is not blinking. WARNING The Cache Status LED blinks to indicate that cache contains data that has NOT been written to disk. Writing cache data to disk normally takes less than 2 minutes. If 10 minutes elapse and the LED remains blinking, call customer support before proceeding. Performing the upgrade Perform the following steps to replace the existing controller(s) with the upgraded controller(s). Note Before proceeding with the upgrade, ensure that you have obtained the correct quantity of mini- SAS to SAS cables, as detailed in the Planning for the upgrade section. 1. If you have expansion enclosures connected to the controller enclosure, remove the SAS cable from the controller s expansion port and the drive enclosure s SAS In port. (Any drive enclosures in the storage system can remain cabled to each other.) 2. Remove the host interface cables from the ports on the controller(s). 3. Remove the existing controller(s) from the controller enclosure. 4. Insert the upgraded controller(s) and tighten the thumbscrews. 5. Replace the host interface cables. If you upgraded or changed host interfaces use new cables; otherwise, use the existing cables. 6. If expansion enclosures were connected to the controller enclosure, connect the mini-sas to SAS cable(s) from the controller s expansion port to the drive enclosure s SAS In port. 7. Restore power to the drive enclosures. While the enclosures are powering up, their LEDs blink. After the LEDs stop blinking and if no LEDs on the front and back of the enclosures are amber, the power-on sequence is complete and no faults have been detected. 8. Restore power to the controller enclosure. 9. Verify the FRU Status LED is lit (not blinking) on the back of the controller(s) before continuing. If the FRU status LED is blinking, contact customer support before proceeding. P/N Rev. A June

Verifying settings after upgrading If you upgraded from a 2000 Series controller(s), the upgraded controller(s) have a new version of RAIDar, which you will use to verify and change configuration settings. Use the worksheet that you filled out in the Record configuration settings portion of this document to verify your settings. For information about using RAIDar, see the applicable RAIDar User Guide. Perform the following steps to sign in to RAIDar to verify and, if necessary, change configuration settings based on the settings you recorded: 1. Sign in to RAIDar as the default user manage with the password!manage. 2. On the System Overview panel, select Versions and verify that all enclosures are running the latest firmware. a. If you are not running the latest firmware, obtain the latest firmware from your vendor. b. After obtaining the firmware files, use the Tools > Update Firmware panel to install them. c. Verify that the firmware has been updated. 3. Verify all the configuration settings that you recorded. Note the following: On the System Overview panel, select Licensed Features. If license information is missing, contact your vendor to obtain a new license. On the System Overview panel, select Schedules. If previously existing schedules are missing, re-create them as described in the applicable RAIDar User Guide. 4. In the Configuration View panel, select each host and verify its port WWN nickname. If the new controller(s) use a different host interface, the WWN nicknames need to be added. Once the host computers are powered on or reconnected to the storage system, you may add the WWN nicknames. 5. If you were using default mapping before the upgrade, click the + icon next to a vdisk and select a volume. Select Provisioning > Default Mapping and verify the volume mapping settings. Repeat this task for each volume that used default mapping. 6. If you were using explicit mapping before the upgrade, click on the + icon next to a vdisk and select a volume. Select Provisioning > Explicit Mapping and verify the volume mapping settings. Repeat this task for each volume that used explicit mapping. Completing the upgrade Once you have confirmed the settings and firmware on the controllers, the upgrade is complete. You may power on or reconnect hosts and verify that they can properly access volumes in the storage system. If you have any problems finding volumes, verify the volume mapping settings on the storage system. Additionally, if you were previously using MPIO, VDS, or VSS, verify that you have the appropriate MPIO and SES drivers installed on your host. If you are able to detect all expected volumes, you may resume your normal operation of the storage system, including I/O. Copyright Protected Material All rights reserved.
