4 Best practices for running Notes in XenApp environments Review the developerworks article titled IBM Lotus Notes and Lotus inotes on Citrix XenApp 4.5/5.0: A scalability analysis Tip: The JVM tuning outlined in the "Lotus Notes Optimization" section can save memory for users who share class files because the optimization loads only one copy that can be shared. Baseline your environment when benchmarking! Be sure to first account for the amount of memory & CPU utilization required to run the OS and other vital applications Use multi-user installs for Notes & higher releases Aid memory usage optimization by leveraging Windows Server Physical Address Extension (PAE) technology on 32-bit servers and 32-bit operating systems Dedicate XenApp servers to applications, if possible. Citrix recommends this from a performance & tuning perspective Leverage Domino File Server Roaming technology, where possible. 4

7 Supported vs. Unsupported: Hot Topic Storage of data network on remote File server IBM understands the necessity of storing the data directory on a remote file share for XenApp Farms This configuration is supported unless determined to be root cause of issue Possible caveats of storing the data directory on a file share: Slower Lotus Notes performance Loss of network connectivity while Notes is running Possible alternative solutions: Roaming or File Server Roaming Windows Roaming 7

8 Support vs. Unsupported: Hot Topic Published Applications The use of the term unsupported simply means: it's just not our technology This configuration is fully supported unless determined to be root cause of issue Possible caveats of this configuration: Slower launch times Inability to launch Notes due to incorrect settings in Published Application properties For any launch issues, try to reproduce with a published Desktop, and then launch Notes from the XenApp desktop Ensure the Command line and Working Directory are correctly populated 8

9 Support vs. Unsupported: Hot Topic XenDesktop XenDesktop is the virtualization of the user's Desktop experience Not formally supported with Notes; however, IBM Support will troubleshoot issues on XenDesktop unless it's determined to be root cause of issue. You may be asked to reproduce issues reported in a XenDesktop environment on a standalone desktop for troubleshooting purposes 9

11 Multi-user installation overview: Parameters SETMULTIUSER=1 Sets the MSI's table value SETMULTIUSER to the value of 1, and will perform a multi-user install MULTIUSERBASEDIR=<path> Indicates the path where the user's data directory will be stored Environment variables can be used (i.e.!username!) MULTIUSERCOMMONDIR=<path> Specifies the location of the templates, help files, modem files, etc, and the SharedDataDirectory= path in the notes.ini CITRIX=1 Makes the MSI Terminal Services aware Places the notes.ini in the correct location Sets the Multi-user registry keys to the appropriate values 11

13 Troubleshooting Notes 8.x performance issues on XenApp Identify whether it's an application hang or an application delay Run NSD manually while Notes is hanging Starting in FP3, this can be done successfully via the Start Menu Single User Installs: Technote # How to run NSD manually for Notes running on a Citrix server Check the number of users logged in, memory usage and CPU utilization at the time of the hang or delay Is Notes a published application? Can this problem be reproduced launching Notes from the Desktop instead? Is this problem reproduced with the data directory stored locally? Does this problem occur on any XenApp server in their Citrix Farm? 13

14 Data to collect to troubleshoot performance issues Verify whether it's an application hang or an application delay ISA log which includes the manual NSD XenApp Server build Notes client release (including fix packs, hotfixes or MUI installs) Single-user or multi-user install (include install details) Data directory location (local or file server) Notes.ini file Steps to reproduce or steps that preceded the hang or delay Test results without published applications # of users logged in when hang or delay occurred 14
