INSTALLING D-LINK DE-650CT WITH WINDOWS 95 This document refers to the following D-Link product:- Note: Above coupler is superseded by 3-LED type DE-650 Type II PCMCIA Ethernet card (completely different from model below!) DE-650CT Type II PCMCIA Ethernet combo card DE-655 Type II PCMCIA Ethernet combo coupler [Note: if your model does not appear to be the same please contact D-Link support for further help] THE ABOVE MODEL WILL WORK WITH WIN BIT DRIVER & IS NE2000 COMPATIBLE DRIVERS DISK: JANUARY 1996 or later: please update if previous to this from the D-Link BBS. Filename: DE65S.EXE Library: DRVDISKS - execute to extract and copy to 1.44Mb floppy disk RUNNING THE INSTALLATION PROGRAM Insert the PC Card in slot one. Please run the INSTALL program from DOS or COMMAND PROMPT. To get to this, boot and press F8 when you see...starting Windows 95. Select COMMAND PROMPT or PREVIOUS VERSION OF MS-DOS. [Note: (please don t choose Quick Installation for Netware even if you use Netware) -SELECT COMPLETE INSTALLATION -IF YOU GET ERRORS eg. no open i/o port.. JUST IGNORE AND PROCEED [press return] -ACCEPT THE PARAMETERS CHOSED [press return 3 times] -SELECT THE OPERATING SYSTEM: MICROSOFT WINDOWS 95 -SELECT THE PATH FOR DRIVER EXTRACTION [eg. C:\WIN95] -You should have the following files. DE65S.DOS 23,360 09/01/96 DOS driver NETDL650 INF 3,663 21/12/95 Windows 95 information file README TXT 7,435 28/02/96 Readme file DE65S SYS 39,552 29/12/95 32-bit 95 driver You could use the Win 95 built-in Oct 95 drivers from Windows 95 but these have been updated and may not work properly in some notebooks-so we strongly recommend the most recent version. You will also need the Windows 95 disks/cd ROM unless the operating system master disks are already installed on your computer (most recent models with large hard disks). (Note: some Windows 95 floppy disks have incorrect numbering-ie. disk 12 should be 13 etc) INSTALLATION OF DIAGNOSTIC PROGRAM It is also a good idea to extract the diagnostic program to your hard disk - by default to the directory \CARDDIAG. This MUST be run from DOS or Command prompt as stated above. [run INSTALL again to do this]. RUN THE DIAGNOSTIC PROGRAM WITH THE DE-650 IN THE SLOT ONE Make sure you have no installed drivers before running the diagnostic program! From the CARDDIAG directory run DCD16.EXE (default parameters are IRQ:11[irq] IOP:300 [i/o port] SLT:0 [slot], change if your notebook uses these) and then DLKDIAG.EXE to check out the card. If EMM386.EXE is present in CONFIG.SYS please insert REM before that line and reboot again. DMCU.EXE utility: this file is located on the drivers disk separately (not from the INSTALL program). Its purpose is to select the default cable type-after running DCD16.EXE, then run DMCU and select the correct type. Default cable type is UTP If you are using BNC we recommend that you run this program. Page 1
The basic diagnostic will check out the card itself-only the network test will check communication through the connector (either UTP or BNC). You will need either another DE-650 or a D-Link DE-220 running the master option in the setup program. If everything passes you can be sure that the hardware is ok, and this may save time later. If it fails, go to troubleshooting at the end of this document. Now remove the card from the slot and reboot Windows 95 BEFORE YOU INSERT THE CARD Some of the latest DE-650CT will attempt to auto-install the built in drivers from Windows 95 without giving the user any alternative. If this happens you will need to prevent this from happening as follows:- a) go to the DOS prompt b) change to the INF directory below Windows 95 (eg. C:\WINDOWS\INF) c) rename the file NETNOVEL.INF to NETNOVEL.OLD d) exit and restart Windows 95 without the DE-650CT present (please insert the DE-650 later) PC CARD CONTROLLER MUST BE INSTALLED & WORKING Check whether your PCMCIA socket has been successfully recognised and installed by Windows 95. You will have an Icon displayed in Control Panel (First click MY COMPUTER at startup) as below, labelled PC Card (PCMCIA). No PCMCIA card will work properly unless this is functioning properly. To verify also select System from Control Panel (bottom left icon above). After selecting Device Manager you will see the display below-double click on PCMCIA socket to display the type of controller (in this case Vadem, there are about 7 types). If the socket has an exclamation mark (!) then the controller has some problem. Please investigate before going any further. You can now close down System and double click on PC CARD in Control Panel. The following will be displayed:- Page 2
INSERT THE DE-650CT PC CARD INTO THE SLOT Insert the DE-650CT (remember older models DE-650C or DE-650T are not covered by this installation) into a vacant slot and your computer should immediately recognise the device (message: found new hardware ) and eventually present the following message:- CHOOSE the first option Driver on disk provided by manufacturer. When prompted, type in the path where you originally copied the D-Link drivers for Windows 95/DE-650CT. Files will be copied from the drivers disk and then from your Windows 95 CD-ROM, floppy disks or the hard disk if installed. You should hear a beep sound (high note) to signify that the card is configured & installed. If there is a low beep sound it may mean the card will not work-check this after rebooting below. Page 3
When Windows 95 requests to restart please do so, do not continue without shutting down. It maybe a good idea to turn off the PC when it reboots. At startup, or whenever the DE-650 is inserted, Windows 95 will now instantly configure the card. After restarting you will need to go to Control Panel/Network and configure as needed:- -client types installed: eg. MS Client (Windows for Workgroups, etc), MS Netware Client (Netware) -protocols used (eg. IPX, Netbeui, TCP/IP) -disk/printer sharing (enable if you need share your hard disk or printer) This is beyond the scope of this document; please consult your Windows 95 manual or on-line help. TROUBLESHOOTING -diagnostic program can t find the card Run in DOS or Command Mode: normally you will need to have run DCD16.EXE before DLKDIAG.EXE. DCD16 must enable the card in order that the card can be located at all. It may fail if EMM386.EXE is present and has no exclusion (D000-D3FF); ideally don t use EMM386.EXE in your CONFIG.SYS. The IRQ & I/O address must be available: many new notebooks have limited free addresses. -basic diagnostic program fails This may be a product failure. If you think this is the case please contact support for a replacement. -network diagnostic fails Check your cable is connected. For UTP check the Link LED (only on couplers with 3 LEDs - check the LED marked Ln/Rx) is on and goes out when the cable is removed; without Link LED it will not work. Check the cable type was selected correctly. -card not recognised properly: This is the most common problem with this installation; it may be caused by:- - incomplete installation if you did not have the Windows 95 disks available or you aborted install -please remove the DE-650CT from Network in Control Panel and restart. Replace the card after reboot and redo the installation - a problem with the PnP function of the notebook If the card is not recognised as an Ethernet card but Unknown Device then the problem is either with the card itself (faulty) or the notbook BIOS/Windows 95 PnP operation. Please check that PnP (Plug and Play) is enabled in the BIOS if the option is present (eg. AST, Elonex, Acer, etc). You will have to remove the unknown device from System. - if there is an entry in SYSTEM.INI EmmExclude=c000-dfff or similar -please place a semi-colon (;) in front to disable this command. - your PCMCIA controller is not working properly Please remove and reinstall the driver for the controller. Contact the notebook vendor if this problem persists. - your notebook has a problem either with Windows 95 or its Socket & Card Services -contact the notebook vendor, there may be a BIOS upgrade already known about or an option to enable/disable in the BIOS setup (eg. plug & play). You can also check (with DE-650CT installed) the Card / Socket Services are present from CONTROL PANEL- SYSTEM-DEVICE MANAGER-COMPUTER. Page 4
- Unable to browse network, when Network Neighbourhood is accessed Your cable is faulty or not connected or the correct protocol (normally Netbeui for 95 and IPX/SPX for Netware) is not configured. If your coupler has 3 LEDs you can check which cable type is selected :- a) BNC: if you boot with card inserted but cable detached, the yellow collision LED will flicker. If not UTP is selected. b) UTP: the Ln/Rx LED will go out when the cable is detached and illuminate when attached. This also verifies that the cable has a good connection (your hub will have the same response from its LINK LED). - Network can be accessed but resources they give an error or timeout when you attempt to use Normally happens with UTP and the older drivers. Use the 1996 drivers-or a utility on the latest drivers disk-dmcu.exe: just run and follow the prompts to select the correct option. - Every time another (different) DE-650CT is inserted Windows 95 detects new hardware found and asks for the driver even though it s already installed. This is due to the auto-detection built into Windows 95. To disable this please rename the file NETNOVEL.INF in the directory below Windows in \WINDOWS\INF. After rename shut down and restart; any DE-650CT can now be inserted. (Please note that all NE2000 compatible devices willalso disappear; the DE-650 uses an NE2000 compatible driver from Win 95). IT IS ADVISED THAT YOU UPGRADE YOUR WINDOWS 95 SYSTEM TO SERVICE PACK ONE LEVEL. THIS IS AVAILABLE FROM MICROSOFT S BBS, WEB OR FTP SITE OR FROM THE D-LINK BBS IN MICROSOF LIBRARY [filename=setup.exe]. IF YOUR NOTEBOOK HAS AVAILABLE A LATER BIOS VERSION (FLASH BIOS ONLY) IT MAY ALSO BE WORTH UPGRADING TO THE LATEST LEVEL ALSO. CONTACT THE VENDOR FOR INFORMATION ABOUT THIS. Page 5
