2 Introduction IMPORTANT NOTES: This release can be installed or used as an upgrade. Capita SIMS supports only the current and most recent previous release of SOLUS. The SOLUS Deployment Service cannot be installed or upgraded on a Windows 2003 Server or Windows XP machine (these machines cannot run.net framework 4.5, which is required for the Deployment Server to operate). Detailed instructions on upgrading a SOLUS3 installation are included. A wide range of documentation is available from within SIMS via the Documentation Centre. This documentation includes handbooks, tutorials, quick reference sheets, etc. and can be accessed by clicking the Documentation button on the SIMS Home Page. The Documentation Centre can also be accessed outside of SIMS ( To access the user handbooks that accompany this release of SOLUS, click the Handbooks button, click the System Administration and Technical category then select the required handbook. What's New in this Release? The following new features and enhancements are included in this release: If at least one Discover deployment has been completed successfully, and it has been defined in Targets, the Discover client will now deploy automatically. Filesets can now be authorised and deployed to schools via SOLUS. Administrators can create groups of schools to facilitate the authorisation and deployment of updates. When installing the SOLUS3 agent, System Administrators can now pre-define which clients they would like on the workstation. Prerequisites Installing SOLUS3 Before installing SOLUS3, the following software must be installed and the following settings configured: Microsoft.NET Framework 4.5 on the Deployment Server only. If Microsoft.NET Framework 4.5 is not already installed, it will be installed as part of the installation process. Installation of Microsoft.NET Framework 4.5 requires a reboot of the Deployment Server before using SOLUS3. Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (or Express), Microsoft SQL Server 2014 (or Express) or SQL Server 2016 (or Express) (required only on the Deployment Service database host). IMPORTANT NOTE: SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 are no longer supported. TCP ports and must be open on all device firewalls that will be part of the Deployment Environment (DE). TCP 139, UDP 137, UPD 138 for browsing the network (NetBIOS) on all devices. WMI must be enabled on all device firewalls that will be part of the DE. NOTE: If a network is not on a domain (e.g. a peer-to-peer network), both the Microsoft.NET Framework 4 Full version and the agent must be installed manually on each workstation. Microsoft.NET Framework 4 must be installed before installing the agent. Preparing to Upgrade IMPORTANT NOTES: When applying the SOLUS3 Server UI update, you are advised to schedule the deployment. The SOLUS3 UI must be closed before the upgrade can be run. An notification will be sent automatically when the upgrade is complete. Agent repository packages are now deleted automatically after 56 days. 3 Performing a SIMS, FMS or Discover Upgrade Checking for New Updates The DS will download a list of available updates automatically, but it is also possible to perform a check for new updates manually by completing the following procedure: This tab provides a list of applicable updates, and the actions you can apply to these updates. Downloading Updates to the Update Repository When an update is downloaded by the DS, the files are placed in the Update Repository for the DS. In some Deployment Environments, downloading updates to the repository might not be necessary. For example, in an Authorising LA model, where each school has its own DS and Update Repository, the LA would not necessarily download all updates to its Update Repository. However, each school would have to download the updates from Capita SIMS to its school Update Repository. To download updates to the local Update Repository, complete the following procedure: 3. For the required update, if the Status is set to Available, click the Download button. When an update has finished downloading, the item is removed from the queue in the Downloads tab and the Status in the Updates tab changes to Downloaded. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you encounter a problem during the download, it is possible to download the update using your web browser and then import it into SOLUS3. For more information, please refer to Downloading Updates via a Web Browser in the Managing Updates chapter of the SOLUS3 for System Administrators handbook. Viewing Update Details (Optional Process) 3. From the list, highlight the update for which you want to view the details. Use the filters to limit the list of updates based on your specific criteria. 4. Click the View button to display the update information. NOTE: Updates can be withdrawn by Capita SIMS or by the LA. The status of an update will then change to Withdrawn. Withdrawn updates cannot be deployed. Deploying an Update 1. Highlight the required update then click the Deploy button. 2. Confirm that this is the deployment you want to run against the TARGETS displayed then click the Deploy now button. 3. If required, select the Delete database backups at the end of this deployment check box. By selecting this check box, SOLUS3 will delete backups after successful deployment.

Where to Find More Information All handbooks referred to throughout the release note can be obtained from our My Account ( website. 1. Enter the required text in the Search field to display a list of documents that match the search criteria. 2. To refine the search further, click Documents and then select the required Document type, File type and/or Date range (click Show more to view additional options, if required). Alternatively, click SIMS Publications (located in the Popular Searches list) to display a list of all SIMS publications. The search results are displayed automatically.
