2 Getting Started Important Notes New Users: - You do not need to install the software provided on the installation DVD before using your new VariQuest Design Center 2300 Touch Screen system (DC2300). All software, drivers, and utilities have already been loaded on the DC2300 for you. Existing Users: - To preserve your files and content when upgrading the VariQuest Design Center Software on your Design Center 2300 or PC, follow the upgrade path for Upgrading the Design Center Software on page 9: All Users: - Use the accompanying DVD to install the VariQuest Design Center Software on your PC, add a VariQuest device to your DC2300, or upgrade the DC2300 or PC to the latest version (if needed). 2

3 The VariQuest Design Center Software is one component of the VariQuest Visual Learning Tools product line, which supports school staff members and volunteers in creating materials that help improve student and staff performance. The software DVD that accompanies this guide performs a number of tasks, depending on the machine you use for the software, and whether the software is a new or an existing installation. This Installation Guide steps you through each of these tasks. To determine which sections meet your specific requirements, use the table, which lists the procedure, installation type (i.e., new/first time, upgrade or adding an output device), and machine type used to run the Design Center Software. 4 Installing Devices or Software Note: You must have Administrator rights to install and run VariQuest software. 1. To install devices or upgrade software: - PC only: Insert the VariQuest Design Center Software DVD into the CD/DVD drive of your PC. - DC2300: From the Workroom Assistance, select the Setup tab, then touch the devices you want to install. 2. Follow the instructions in the applicable section of this guide. 4

5 Installing the Design Center Software on a PC APPLIES TO: New Install only User PCs only The following steps apply to a new installation. (See Upgrading the Design Center Software on page 9 for the steps needed in an upgrade.) 1. Insert the VariQuest Design Center Software DVD into your PC. If the setup program does not start: - Open your Windows Start menu: - Windows 7: Type Run in the text field. - Windows 8.1 and 10: Right click on Start menu; then left click on Run. 2. In the text field, type: D:\variquestinstaller.exe where D = your CD/DVD drive, then click OK 3. Windows 7/8/10: In the User Account Control window, click Yes (it is ok for the program to make changes to this computer). 4. On the Design Center Software welcome screen, click New Install. 5

6 TIP If not already installed, the setup program may prompt you to install up to three dependency applications (Microsoft.NET, Visual C++ and Office 2007 Access Engine). When done, you may be prompted to restart your PC. 5. If prompted to install a dependency application, click Install. Note: You may have to click Yes to the license agreement for each dependency application installed. 6. On the License Agreement screen, read the agreement (use scroll bar to read the entire text). If you agree, click Yes. - If you click No, you will not be able to continue. - If you click Back, you will be returned to the previous screen. - To print out the entire agreement, click Print. 7. On the Select Options screen, click the check box next to each VariQuest output device you want to connect to your system. 8. When done, click Next. 9. Windows 7/8/10: Click OK in the account security screen when prompted to validate the new software installation. 10. The Choose Destination Location screen displays the destination folder (recommended) where the files will be installed. To change the location, click Browse, then select a different folder. 11. Click Next to continue. The installation process begins, and a progress bar will display on the Setup Status screen while installing. The Printer Setup program will also install each device you selected in step 7. Note: For Perfecta 2400 users: The VariQuest-Supported scanner drivers will also be automatically installed. Note: For Trifecta 800 users: The Trifecta Sofware program will also be automatically installed. 6

7 TIP When installation is complete, you may be prompted to restart your computer. 12. Click Finish (you must click Finish to complete the installation process.) 13. After the software and all device drivers are installed, launch the Design Center Software and perform a one-time procedure to complete the initial installation tasks. See the VariQuest Design Center Software User's Guide for instructions on launching the software and completing the initial setup. 7

8 Adding VariQuest Devices to a PC after Initial Install APPLIES TO: Device-only Install User PCs only You can always add more VariQuest devices after the software is installed. To add another device: 1. Insert the VariQuest Design Center Software disk and click Device-Only Install. 2. On the Select Printer screen, click to highlight the device you are adding. 3. Click OK. The Printer Setup program installs the selected devices. Follow all prompts during install. 4. Repeat for each device you want installed (see Step 6 for details about installing the Cutout Maker). 5. After installing the new device(s), the Printer Setup program will display a message asking if you want to reboot. Select Yes, then click Finish. 6. Cutout Maker: If Found New Hardware window displays: - Click No, not this time, then click Next. - Click Automatically install driver (Recommended), then click Next. The wizard installs the driver. - When prompted, click Finish. - If prompted, click Restart Now. You cannot use your newly installed device(s) until your PC has been restarted. 7. Connect the device cable to a USB port, if you have not already done so. 8

9 Upgrading the Design Center Software APPLIES TO: Upgrade Install only Both DC2300s and User PCs This procedure steps you through the process of upgrading your existing Design Center Software to a newer version. To preserve your files and content, use the following upgrade path: - For versions 1.2, or later : Upgrade directly to the latest version. - For versions 1.0, 1.1 or 1.1a: First upgrade to v1.2a, then upgrade to the latest version. Use this procedure for both. 1. Close all open VariQuest software applications and disable your screensaver, if active. 2. Insert the VariQuest Design Center Software disk into the CD/DVD drive. If the program does not start automatically: a. Open your Windows Start menu and click Run... b. In the Open text box, type: D:\variquestinstaller.exe where D = your CD/DVD drive. c. Click OK. 3. From the Design Center Software welcome screen, touch or click Upgrade Install. The InstallShield Wizard launches. TIP Depending on your configuration, Windows may automatically run updates to some of its components. 4. If prompted, click to install the Microsoft components and follow the prompts. TIP If Microsoft.NET Framework is installed, you may have to restart your DC2300 or PC. If a restart was required, repeat Step 2, then continue with Step 4. 9

10 5. After the reboot, touch or click OK if prompted to install any additional Microsoft components and follow the prompts. 6. When all Microsoft components are installed, touch or click OK again to automatically start the VariQuest Design Center Software upgrade installation. 7. Touch or click the check box(es) to install additional drivers for your other VariQuest equipment. 8. Follow the prompts in the upgrade to complete the installation. TIP The install program upgrades your existing software and databases. A progress bar displays during the upgrade. Please be patient the process could take some time as all databases are updated. 10
