2 Product Description IBM UPS Manager is power protection software that provides UPS monitoring, control, and preventive measures agains t power problems that affect computer networks and equipment. Togeth er with IBM UPS products, computer network systems protected by IBM UPS Manager Software are more reliable and less prone to down t ime and data corruption. IBM UPS Manager is capable of connectin g to UPSs that are directly connected to the network, in addition to t hose that are attached to computers via USB or serial ports. IBM UPS Manager can manage up to 64 computers that receive protected po wer from one UPS System Requirements Supported Platforms Operating systems are running on 32-bit processors unless otherwise specified. *Windows Windows XP Professional (&) Windows Server 2003

5 firmware available from IBM at ystems/support/. For more information about upgrading the network ma nagement card firmware, see the IBM Network Management Card User' s Guide on the IBM Documentation CD that comes with the uninterruptibl e power supply. If there is a problem with upgrading the card please c ontact the IBM Technical Support Helpdesk at U.S. and Canada, call IBM-SERV ( ) Known Issues ITEM : Error message displayed on saving Events logs. ITEM# : Urawa 250 DESCRIPTION : When IBM UPS Manager application is s tarted from service (system tray icon), if user tries to browse folder on Save As dialog box on export event then error is displayed as C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Desktop ref ers to a location that is unavailable. WORKAROUND : Start IBM UPS Manager Application from start menu. ITEM : On RHEL x64 OS, Serial or SNMP co mmunication setting will not show the detected (via communicati

6 on setting using IBM UPS Manager Console) UPS Model. ITEM# : Urawa 301 DESCRIPTION : User has installed IBM UPS manager on RHEL x64. It is connected to UPS via SNMP connectivity. Suppose if the user decides to monitor UPS via Serial connectivity and selects Serial setting in 'Communication Setting' option from IBM UPS Manager Console than UPS Model description & UPS Serial number is not availa ble. WORKAROUND : Reinstall IBM UPS Manager on RHEL x64 with the required (SNMP or Serial) connectivity. ITEM : Changing Service login account fo r IBM UPS Manager to other domain causes XYNTSerive and LSTrayAgent t o log error message in Windows Event Log Description : If service login account for IBM UPS Manager service change to any domain logon for example test.com\adm inistrator causes XYNTService and LSTrayAgent services to get closed. Also these events are logged in Windows Event viewer as Error. This d oes not affect the functionality of IBM UPS Manager Service General Troubleshooting Tips Serial Port of IBM PowerPC not detected -This is because your Power 5 may not contain built in serial port or serial port on your Power 5 PC may be of type virt

7 ual connection like S1 and S2. These can be used for a local conso le (i.e, when we connect a console using a windows machine running H yperterminal), remote console or a call-modem connection. S1 and S 2 can not be used to connect printers or UPS to the p510. You need to add external serial port card in order to get extra port. After installing serial port card and its driver, you have to select custom serial port while IBM UPS Manager installation and has to provide pat h of custom serial port (like /dev/dg/dgnc/ttyn1a or /dev/dg/dgnc/ttyn 1b). 2. Uninstall on RHEL -Running the uninstall script on RHEL systems delet es all files and directories with the exception of the install direc tory (By default, this is /usr/ibm/ibmupsmanager/). You must manually delete the 'IBM' directory. 3. Windows Control Panels and IBM UPS Manage r Installation -Leaving Control Panels such as the Services Contro l Panel open during installation can prevent the IBM UPS Manager Servic e and other components from being installed properly. Close all Windows Control Panel windows before installing the software. 4. Some files does not get deleted on Windows 7 -After uninstalling IBM UPS Manager on windows 7, O S should be restarted.

8 5. IBM UPS Manager icon is not displayed in system tray on windows 7 -This issue occurs if OS is not restarted after IBM UPS Manager uninstall. To resolve this, restart the OS before r e-installing IBM UPS Manager. 6. Warning messages related to Xlib displaye d in the Terminal window when executed PowerMonitorX utility from con sole. Warning: locale not supported by Xlib, locale set to C Warning: X locale modifiers not supported, us ing default Warning: translation table syntax error: Unkn own keysym name: osfactivate Warning:... found while parsing ':<Key>osfA ctivate: ManagerParentActivate()' Warning: String to TranslationTable conversio n encountered errors This warning shown to console because system unable to find path for XKEYSYMDB. Once set this value in system environmen t, this warning does not occurred. Procedure to set this value in system environment t able is as below Login to RHEL System Console as a root user - Enter following at command prompt TYPE XKEYSYMDB=/usr/share/X11/XKeysymDB 7. Windows Console not able to automatically discover Controller installed

9 on RHEL machines. - When contacting to RHEL Controller from Windows C onsole by providing IP address gives error Could not find co ntroller - Member installed on any machine is not able to ge t Controller installed on RHEL System. For all above mentioned problems, modifications nee ds to be made on RHEL system where IBM UPS Manager Controller or Mem ber is installed. Here is the procedure to modify system files to sol ve above problems. 1. Login to RHEL System as a root user 2. Change directory to /etc 3. Make backup copy of hosts file using command TYPE cp hosts hosts.bak 4. Open the hosts file in editor using any editor like vi editor TYPE vi hosts it will looks like below # Do not remove the following line, or various prog rams # that require network functionality will fail localhost.localdomain localhost Now modify this hosts file to look something li ke below # Do not remove the following line, or various prog rams # that require network functionality will fail.

10 localhost.localdomain localhost xxx.xxx.xxx.14 RHEL New line xxx.xxx.xxx.14 RHEL-5-64 is added in this file. In this line xxx.xxx.xxx.14 is IP address and RHEL-5-64 is hostname of system on which controller or member is installed. 6. Restart the network by command. Refer OS admin guide to restart network if below mentioned command does not work TYPE service network stop TYPE service network start 7. Restart IBM UPS Manager PowerMonitor STOP POWERMONITOR Navigate to the Bin directory in the IBM UPS Manage r install directory (the default install directory is /usr/ib M/IBMUPSManager/). TYPE cd /usr/ibm/ibmupsmanager/bin TYPE./PowerMonitor.unload START POWERMONITOR Navigate to the Bin directory in the IBMUPSManager install directory (the default install directory is /usr/ibm/ibmupsma nager/). TYPE cd /usr/ibm/ibmupsmanager/bin TYPE./PowerMonitor.sh

Installing IBM UPS Manager from CD on some of th e RHEL OS fails. -Installing IBM UPS Manager from CD on some of the RHEL machines(like RHEL5) sometimes results in the following failure m essage: bash: /install.sh: /bin/sh: bad interpreter: Permission d enied On some specific OS CDROM is auto mounted with noex ec option. In that case above mentioned message will be displayed. To resolve this issue mount CDROM manually with mount option, like mount /dev/hda /media and then browse CD from media directory. 9. Broadcast Notification with RHEL. -Broadcast Notification may not work with all RHEL distributions. In that case user can use more reliable option like Em ail Notification.
