1 Moving an Installation of Amicus Attorney Small Firm Edition Applies to: Amicus Attorney Small Firm Edition 2012/2011/2010/2009/2008 This document describes how to move Amicus Attorney Small Firm Edition Server or Workstation to a new computer, or to a different folder on the same computer. Upgrading Windows If you are moving Amicus Attorney as part of upgrading Windows, be sure to back up and uninstall Amicus before the upgrade, and reinstall Amicus after the upgrade, as instructed in this document. Uninstalling Amicus Attorney Where instructed below, use Windows Add/Remove Programs to uninstall Amicus Attorney or Amicus Administrator. Under Windows 7 or Vista, perform the uninstall from Control Panel > Programs and Features. 2 Moving Amicus Administrator and your firm s data This section describes how to move the Amicus Administrator program, Team Database, and related data to another computer or to a different folder on the same computer. Step A: Back up your Team Database and related data 1 Before you begin: a From Help > About in Amicus Administrator, note your version of Amicus Attorney. b Ensure that all Secondary Office Briefcases have been unpacked, if any. c Ensure that all users have gone Online and have logged out of their Amicus Attorney Office. d If integrated with Amicus Small Firm Accounting, ensure that all users have logged out of that application. e From Amicus Administrator, Deny Access to all Users. f Exit Amicus Administrator. 2 Copy the following files and folders to your Desktop. Or, if upgrading Windows on the existing computer, copy the items to an external location such as a CD. [drive]:amicus\amicus ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM\database\A MICUS.DB [drive]:amicus\amicus ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM\ATEAM.LDF [drive]:amicus\amicus ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM\TEMPLATE\ [drive]:amicus\amicus ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM\BACKUP\ (If you use the Amicus Attorney backup function) [drive]:amicus\amicus ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM\ARCHIVE\ (If you have used the Amicus Attorney archive function) Step B: If upgrading Windows on the server (e.g. to Vista) 1 If Workstation is installed on the server, uninstall Amicus Attorney there. 2 At the server, uninstall Amicus Administrator. (This deletes the old Team Database as well.) 3 Upgrade Windows (e.g. to Vista) on the server, if desired. Step C : Reinstall Amicus Administrator 1 At the computer where you want Amicus Administrator to reside, insert the Amicus Attorney Installation CD and reinstall Amicus Administrator. This will create a new AMICUS ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM folder in the location of your choice. W e recommend installing to [drive]:\amicus\amicus ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM. NOTE TO WINDOWS 7 AND VISTA USERS: Do NOT install to [drive]:\program Files. 2 If your Amicus CD is for an older version of Amicus Attorney than you were currently running, update the application to the matching version. 3 Share the AMICUS ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM folder with full security access to all Team Members. 3 Step D: Restore your Amicus data Once Amicus Administrator is installed, it is time to move the data from the old location to the new location. You will now copy the license, database, backup folder, and template files. 1 Copy your backed up files and folders to the new AMICUS ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM folder, replacing the ones currently in the new folder: [drive]:\amicus\amicus ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM\database\AMICUS.DB [drive]:\amicus\amicus ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM\ATEAM.LDF [drive]:\amicus\amicus ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM\TEMPLATE\ [drive]:\amicus\amicus ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM\BACKUP\ (If the folder was backed up) [drive]:\amicus\amicus ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM\ARCHIVE\ (If the folder was backed up) 2 In the AMICUS ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM\database folder, delete all files ending with the.fcs extension. 3 Rebuild the Team Database. To do this, hold down the CTRL key while starting the new Amicus Administrator. Keep the CTRL key held down until the status dialog says Fetching, and then release the key. Rebuilding the Team Database will take a while, depending on your database size, network integrity, and computer speed. 4 (Optional) Use the Generate Local Databases feature in Amicus Administrator to ensure that all workstations are synchronized with the rebuilt Team Database. This process will take a while. 5 In Amicus Administrator, choose Users > User Management > Add/Remove and check that all users are licensed as before. Grant access (remove Deny Access) for all users. Step E: Point all Team Member Offices to the correct database 1 Provide each Team Member with access to the AMICUS TEAM SF folder as described below. At each Team Member workstation: a Remove the drive mapping to the old AMICUS ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM folder. b Map a drive to the new AMICUS ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM folder. For simplicity, we recommend that the same drive letter (e.g. K ) be used at all workstations. c Open the Amicus.INI file (AmicusAttYY.INI or AmicusAttSFE.INI) on each Team Member s workstation, from [drive]:\windows (or \WINNT). In the [PATHS] section, change the ServerAmicusPath so that it points to the new location of the AMICUS ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM folder. Save the file and exit. 2 (Optional) At each Team Member workstation, hold down the CTRL key while starting Amicus Attorney. This rebuilds the Local Database to ensure that is synchronized with the rebuild Team Database. This step is NOT necessary if you used the Generate Local Databases feature earlier in Amicus Administrator. Step F: If you moved Amicus Administrator to a different server [OPTIONAL] 1 As it is no longer needed, you may now uninstall the old Amicus Administrator (and Amicus Attorney Workstation if any) from the old server. 4 Step G: If you upgraded Windows on the server 1 Reinstall Amicus Attorney Workstation on the server, if desired. From the \AMICUS ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM\Install\ folder, run the SETUP.EXE file. Follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall the Amicus Attorney Team Member. 5 Moving a workstation This section describes how to uninstall an existing Team Member office, and then reinstall Amicus Attorney onto that same computer or another. Step A: Uninstall Amicus Attorney 1 Ensure that you have unpacked your Secondary Office Briefcase (if any), have gone Online (if you were Offline), and have logged out of your Amicus Attorney Office. 2 If integrated with Amicus Small Firm Accounting, ensure that you have logged out of that application. 3 Uninstall Amicus Attorney. 4 Remove any leftover Amicus files. Check for an AMICUS ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM folder in the \AMICUS folder, and check for any AmicusAtt*.INI files in the \Windows folder. Step B: If upgrading Windows on the computer (e.g. to Vista) 1 If upgrading Windows on the current computer, do so at this point. Step C: Reinstall Amicus Attorney At the computer where you wish Amicus Attorney installed: 1 Ensure that you have a drive mapped to the AMICUS ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM TEAM folder on the Amicus Server. For simplicity, we recommend that the same drive letter (e.g. K ) be used at all workstations. 2 On your mapped drive, browse to the \INSTALL folder and double-click SETUP.EXE. Follow the onscreen instructions to install the Team Member. We recommend installing to [drive]:\amicus\amicus ATTORNEY YYYY SMALL FIRM. NOTE TO WINDOWS 7 AND VISTA USERS: Do NOT install to [drive]:\program Files. Near the end of the install process you will be prompted to select the appropriate Team Member from the list. 3 Install and configure any desired workstation-related third-party links. Moving a Secondary Office For instructions on uninstalling and reinstalling Amicus Secondary Office at a computer, see the Secondary Office Feature document, available from the Technical Resource Guides section of our website. If upgrading Windows on that computer, uninstall Secondary Office first, and reinstall Secondary Office after the upgrade.
