1 Introduction Finally, an FM Radio with a web interface for streaming local over-the-air (OTA) broadcasts. With our patent-pending Home Airwaves Radio, you can listen to your local broadcasts from anywhere on any web-enabled device; desktop, laptop, notepad, handheld (supports ios and Android). No recurring fees. No in-market blackouts. Get all of those ball games you've been missing. Listen to your favorite radio programming while out of town or on the road. If you've got internet access, you can listen to your Home Airwaves Radio. No more listening to annoying national sportscasters and color analysts. With a Home Airwaves Radio, you can synchronize the local radio broadcast with the TV video broadcast and enjoy listening to your favorite hometown sportscasters. The Home Airwaves Radio makes for a great gift for Dad on Christmas or Father's Day. Visit for more information. 1
2 How It Works Your Home Airwaves Radio is Plug-N-Play. Just plug it into your router using the supplied Ethernet cable, and plug the power cord into an electrical socket, and Bob s your uncle. If you ve got a WIFI router, you can configure your Home Airwaves Radio for wireless communications, and then put it anywhere in your house. 2
3 Components The Home Airwaves Radio consists of the following components: 1. Radio Core While our manufacturing is spinning up, we are currently using a Raspberry Pi model FM Tuner We use a Software Defined Radio (SDR) USB for tuning into FM signals. Plug this into one of the available USB ports on the Radio Core. Avoid blocking the Ethernet RJ-45 jack when using a wired network connection. 3. Antenna The antenna plugs into the circular MCX port on the FM tuner. 3
4. Power Cord Plug one end into the Radio Core s micro-usb port. Plug the pronged end into an electrical socket. 4
5. Micro SD Card This contains all the software to run the device. Insert this into the slot on the bottom of the Radio Core. Make sure it fits securely into the slot. 6. Ethernet Cable Plug one end into the RJ-45 jack on the Radio Core, and the other end into an available RJ-45 jack on your home router. 5
When done, it should look like this: 6
4 Logging In First, you must log in as admin, password admin. If there are no stations configured, you will see a popup saying, Please click on Stations menu item to add a new station. Click OK to that message to see the Home Airwaves Radio home page. Figure 1 - Home Airwaves Radio Home Page 7
5 Radio Stations Click the Stations menu item to manage radio stations. Doing so will pop up Radio Stations window: 5.1 Local Stations Figure 2 - Radio Stations Page You can view a list of stations in your local area by entering your zip code and clicking Local Stations. Doing so will pop up a window containing local stations as determined by Figure 3 - radio-locator.com 8
Notice that the Dist./Signal column indicates the distance from your zip code and signal strength. Typically, only strong signals will be available unless you connect your Home Airwaves Radio to a rooftop/attic antenna. 5.2 Add Stations Back on the Radio Stations page, click Add to start adding stations. You will see another pop up window as follows: Figure 4 - Add Station Enter the radio frequency, like 92.5, and a description of the station, like WWCP, or Classic Rock, or Classic Rock WWCP. Currently the only band supported is FM, so keep that as is. Click the Save button and you will be notified that the station has been added. Continue adding stations as needed. When done, click the Close button. Now, the Radio Stations page should have all the stations you just added: 9
5.3 Delete Stations Figure 5 - Populated Radio Stations Page To delete a station, just click on the Delete button in the station s row you wish to delete. A pop up window will appear asking you to confirm the deletion: Figure 6 - Delete Station Confirmation Click Delete to confirm, or Cancel to abort. After clicking Delete, the window will look like this: 10
Figure 7 - Station Deleted Click the Close button, and the deleted station will no longer appear in the Radio Stations table. Click the Close button on the Radio Stations page to get back to the Home page. Now, all the stations you added will be in the drop down list. 11
6 Radio Streaming Home Airwaves Radio User s Guide Figure 8 - Station Drop Down List Select the station you want, and then click the Listen Now button. The Home page will now look like this, and you should begin to hear the selected station: Here are things you can do on this page: 12
Listen Now establishes a connection to selected station. End Stream terminates the radio stream. Pause Audio button and/or symbol will pause the stream output. Play Audio button and/or > symbol will resume the stream output from when it was paused. Speaker symbol mutes/unmutes sound. Slide symbol to the right of the speaker symbol controls volume. Hint: Use Pause/Play to synchronize the radio output with the TV video output, such as when watching a ball game. 13
7 Configuration Click Configure in the menu bar to configure your Home Airwaves Radio. The Configure page is divided into groups, which we will discuss separately: Device Configuration Network Configuration Router Information Login Configuration Contact Information For more information on each prompts, hover your mouse over the he help icon where available. Click the Close button to close the Configure window. 14
7.1 Device Configuration Home Airwaves Radio User s Guide Device ID - The Device ID is a unique identifier of your device. It is used for configuration and troubleshooting purposes. Associated buttons include: Shutdown - Before unplugging your radio, it is recommended that you shut down the device. Click this button to initiate a shutdown. Click Shutdown to confirm or Close to abort. After shutting down, you will still see lights on the unit, but it will be safe to unplug. Reboot - Click this button to reboot your device. Click Reboot to confirm or Close to abort. Version Number The Version Number is the version of Home Airwaves Radio software running on your device. Associated buttons include: Update Check - A job is scheduled to run every day to automatically check for updates, and install them when found. As such, you will probably not need to use Update Check, however we provide this capability just in case. Click this button to check for software updates. 15
7.2 Network Configuration Home Airwaves Radio User s Guide Your Home Airwaves Radio may have up to two (2) simultaneous Local Area Network (LAN) connections; a wired connection (LAN Wired) and/or a wireless connection (LAN Wireless). LAN Wired Hostname & IP Address When an Ethernet cable that is connected to your router is plugged into the unit s RJ-45 network port, the device will use Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to obtain an IP address. The DHCP request will ask for the hostname hawire. When successful, an IP address will be assigned, and you may connect to the unit from a web browser using the URL Some DHCP servers do not support the hostname request. In this case, will not work. To connect to the unit in this case, please try If no Ethernet cable is plugged in, or there is an issue obtaining an IP address, you will see the word none as the IP address. LAN Wireless Hostname & IP Address This device can connect to your LAN over a WIFI connection. When properly configured with a valid WIFI SSID and passcode, the system will use Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to obtain an IP address. The DHCP request will ask for the hostname hawifi. When successful, an IP address will be assigned, and you may connect to the unit from a web browser using the URL Some DHCP servers do not support the hostname request. In this case, will not work. To connect to the unit in this case, please try When WIFI is not connected, you will see the word none as the IP address, and a button labeled Wireless Settings to configure the connection. Wireless Settings - Select your Wireless Network (SSID), enter the passcode, and click Save. 16
When WIFI is connected, you will see a button labeled Disconnect to disconnect the connection. Disconnect When the WIFI connection is established, you will see this button instead of the Wireless Settings button. To disconnect the WIFI connection, click this button and then click Disconnect to confirm or Close to abort. External Hostname The external hostname provides a way to access your Home Airwaves Radio from anywhere outside your LAN. The external IP address of your router will be automatically mapped to your selected external hostname so that you can connect to it using a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) in your browser with the following format: where <NAME> is your selected external hostname. Notice that this URL ends in.net We recommend using local addresses and/or when connecting from home, but you can also use the external hostname from your LAN. Set Hostname - To create a homeairwaves.net hostname, click Set Hostname and enter a name. If it is not available, you will be notified and you can try another name. If it is available, it will be registered, and you will be able to access this device from outside your LAN after setting up port forwarding (see below for details). 17
In addition to setting an external hostname, you need to configure your router's Port Forwarding settings. Please see below for details on Port Forwarding. External IP Address This device automatically updates the homeairwaves.net Dynamic Domain Name Server (DDNS) with the External IP Address of your router so that you can access it from anywhere. Since this is done automatically, you shouldn't need to run Check IP, but we provide a button to initiate this process just in case.. Check IP - Click the Check IP button to make sure your external IP address is up-to-date in the homeairwaves.net DDNS. External Web Port This is the external TCP port used for Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) streaming via the external router IP address for remote connections only. It will be map, using port forwarding, to the device s local IP address port 80. The default external web port is 80. However, you may have this port on the router already mapped or wish to change it. As such, we provide a way to change this port number to avoid a conflict. If you change the external web port, then you will need to include the new port number in the URL used to access your Home Airwaves Radio the homeairwaves.net URL: where <NAME> is your external hostname and <PORT> is the new external web port number. Notice the colon (:) before the <PORT> number. 18
Set External Web Port Click this button to change the external web port number. Click Save to make the change. External Stream Port This is the TCP port used for audio streaming via the external router IP address for remote connections. It will be map, using port forwarding, to the local IP address port The default external audio port is However, you may have this port on the router already mapped or wish to change it. As such, we provide a way to change this port number to avoid a conflict. 7.3 Router Information This section contains information pertinent to your router, such as the Manufacturer, internal IP address, and port forwarding configuration. Manufacturer Your Home Airwaves Radio will automatically detect the manufacturer of your router. This could be helpful if you need to manually configure port forwarding. Validate Click the validate button if/when you replace your router with a new one. 19
IP Address Your Home Airwaves Radio will automatically detect the IP address of your router. Click on the router s IP address to connect to the web interface of your router in a new tab/window. Port Forwarding When you click the Auto-Config button, your Home Airwaves Radio will attempt to automatically configure your router s port forwarding table so that you can access your radio from outside your LAN. Auto-Config You must click this button to configure your router s port forwarding table. You should do this if/when you change the external port configuration (web and/or stream), or change from wired to wireless connection, or vice-versa. The following table depicts the port forwarding configuration assuming you ve changed the External Web Port to 8080 and the External Stream Port to 8033: Usage External Port Internal Port Web Interface Port <Any IP>:8080 <Internal IP>:80 Audio Streaming Port <Any IP>:8033 <Internal IP>:8031 where: <Any IP> is the external system IP address (laptop, tablet, smart phone, etc.) <Internal IP> is the Home Airwaves Radio internal IP address (e.g ), If you have a firewall, external ports (web and stream) must be opened to allow remote access to your Home Airwaves Radio. 20
7.4 Login Configuration Home Airwaves Radio User s Guide Your Home Airwaves Radio includes two (2) accounts: admin The admin account can do everything. The default password is admin. Please change the password as soon as possible. guest The guest account cannot add/delete radio stations, nor access the configuration. The guest can only set the station, listen to the audio stream, and play/pause/end the audio stream. The default password is guest. Please change the password as soon as possible. Change Password Click this button to change the corresponding account s password. Enter the new password, confirm it, and then click Save. 7.5 Contact Information The contact information is used for support purposes only and is optional.
