SKF Microlog Inspector Setup Guide Microlog Inspector setup overview The new Microlog Inspector application uses a different, much easier communication method than previous MARLIN versions. With the new Microlog Inspector, various communication parameters are set up the first time you use the device - from that point on, the user simply presses the hand-held device s Synchronize icon (from the main screen) to facilitate upload/download software does not need to be running for communications to software refers to Analyst and Inspector applications. This automation uses communication parameters set up in software utility program named Microlog Service, in this guide referred to as the Service utility. This Service utility is set up once and then runs continuously in the background. It is this Service utility, along with profiles set up software and communication settings set up on the hand-held device that facilitate easy, on-going communication between your hand-held device and software database. In short, initial communications setup is performed, then, without the need to software, the user simply presses the device s Synchronize icon and communications occur. Therefore, before you can use the Microlog Inspector application for the first time, you must perform the following steps: Each of these steps is described in detail later in this document. 1. On software host computer, set up the Service utility using the Analyst Configuration Tool. This is typically done as part of software installation. 2. Install the Microlog Inspector application on the hand-held device. 3. On the hand-held device, set up communications between Microlog Inspector and software, and initiate communications. 4. In software, create a profile and assign it to the hand-held device. A profile identifies all of the operator and ROUTE data collection information to be downloaded to the Microlog Inspector when synchronization occurs. 5. Synchronize your hand-held device software to download the assigned profile to the device. 1

Step 1 - Set up the Service utility using Analyst Configuration Tool This is typically performed as part of software installation. If you are able to confirm that the Service utility is set up and running on your system, you may skip this step and proceed to step 2. The following section is extracted from the Analyst Installation Manual. Reference this manual for a complete, detailed description of Database and Configuration Tool options. After completing installation of software application(s), your next step is to configure your database to work software. From the Windows Start / Monitoring Suite / Admin Tools menu, select the Analyst Configuration Tool option. The Analyst Configuration Tool dialog displays. The window s left pane displays two main configuration options; Database configuration options provide options for specifying a database type, changing to a different database, adding users for existing databases, updating the database, and running an SQL script. Analyst Configuration Tool options allow you to configure various software applications. 2

Figure 1. The Microlog Service Configuration Dialog. Highlight the Microlog Service option. A dialog displays the Service utility s setup fields. This dialog allows you to add one or more Microlog Services to software system (each Microlog Service appears on a row in the dialog s table). A Microlog Service is necessary to enable communication between hand-held devices and software database storing Microlog Inspector data. For communication speed purposes, it is preferable to add the Microlog Service to the computer storing software database. You may add multiple Microlog Services on the same computer, and also on multiple computers on software network, depending on your needs. To add a new Microlog Service: On the computer on which you wish to add the new Microlog Service, select the Configuration Tool s Microlog Service option. The Microlog Service Configuration dialog appears. Select the dialog s Add button, then use fields in the dialog s Properties area to configure the new Microlog Service. If no database connections yet exist, the Manage Connections dialog automatically appears, allowing you to add a database connection. 3

Name Enter a unique name to identify the Microlog Service (alphanumeric and underscore characters only). Port Enter the computer s TCP Port used for the communication with the hand-held devices. Each Microlog Service must have a unique Port number. Make sure your firewall software does not block this port. Hostname Read only, displays the computer s host name. Connection title Database connections identify software databases. Select an existing database connection to be used by the Microlog Service from the drop down list. List If the service loses connection to the database, and you wish to automatically receive an notification about the loss of connection, enable the Send s when service loses database connection check box. Click the list button to enter addresses to which the Microlog Service will send notifications. Figure 2. The List Dialog. Each address must be separated by either a comma or semicolon. Before the recipients can receive these notifications, you must first configure the SMTP settings. When finished, press the Save button to save the new Microlog Service configuration, the new Microlog Service appears in the table and the new Microlog Service initiates, or press the Undo button to cancel the changes. Step 2 - Install the Microlog Inspector application on the handheld device. Warning: Upload all data stored in the hand-held unit that has not previously been uploaded Monitoring Suite. Failure to do so may result in lost data. Microlog Inspector version 1.0 is only compatible Monitoring Suite version 6.0 or later. 4

Important - before you start, verify you have the following: Microsoft Active Sync 4.5. The latest version of Active Sync is available for free at If your computer is running Microsoft Windows 7, work with your IT administrator to initialize and use the Windows Mobile Device Center instead of ActiveSync, and disregard all future ActiveSync references in this setup process. Hand-held device compatible with Microlog Inspector A communications cable (e.g., USB cable, docking station, etc.) If you do not already have Microsoft.NET version 3.5 SP1 installed on your computer, we strongly suggest you install it prior to installing the Microlog Inspector application. To check to see if you have the 3.5 SP1 version of the.net framework, use your computer s Control Panel / Add or Remove Programs utility and locate it in the list. If you don t have the. NET 3.5 SP1 version, you may download it from Microsoft s Download webpage using this link. During the download, default through the installation prompts to complete the software communications settings are specified during the communication setup phase of the installation. Contact your software administrator and acquire software host computer s Host Name or IP Address, and Port number so you may enter them during the communications setup phase of the installation. 19 Profile Manager Overview Before you can transfer data between software and the hand-held device, you must first create a profile and assign it to the hand-held device to which you wish to download data. A profile identifies all of the operator and ROUTE data collection information to be downloaded to the Microlog Inspector application. You may create as many profiles as you wish, but you may only assign one profile to a device at a time. You may also assign the same profile to several devices. The number of devices to which you can download profiles is limited by the number of available Microlog Inspector licenses purchased. Creating a New Profile To create a new profile: Select the Customize menu s Microlog Inspector Settings option. The Microlog Inspector Settings dialog s Profile Manager tab displays. Click the Add button located on the dialog s bottom right. The Profiles drop down list and Profile name text box display New Profile. Define the new profile information using the following fields: Profile name Assign the new profile a unique profile name for future identification purposes. Operator Set Select a predefined operator set from the drop down list to assign operators and their specified operator preferences to the profile. If necessary, click the View Sets button to create a new operator set or edit an existing operator set using the Operator Set dialog. Profile Owner Select software user that will be associated with data when it is uploaded from Microlog Inspector. software doesn t need to be running to upload Microlog Inspector data, and hence, software login is required, this setting associates the uploaded data with the specified Profile Owner software statistical and reporting uses. Download previous Enter the number of previous measurement records (1 99) you wish to download to the device for field trending purposes (typically 10). Synchronize device with latest measurements This setting is used in conjunction with the Download previous setting above. If the profile s route data is being collected by multiple hand-held devices, enable this option to download measurement record data that was uploaded from all the devices assigned this profile. On the Microlog Inspector, this allows you to view and trend all the previous data taken with all devices assigned the profile. Depending on the size of the ROUTE, enabling Synchronize device with latest measurements may cause synchronization to take longer than normal. 19

ROUTE/Workspace selection Click a checkbox to select the ROUTEs / workspaces you wish to download with the profile. When you enable a ROUTE / workspace checkbox, the item moves to the top of the list. If several items are selected, the newest selection appears below previously selected items at the top of the list. Download order Specify the order in which the selected ROUTEs / workspaces download to, and appear on, the assigned device. Highlight a selected ROUTE or workspace and click the Up and Down buttons to move the item up or down in the list of selected items. Click Save to save the profile. The Profiles list updates to reflect the newly added profile. How to Assign a Profile to a Microlog Inspector Device The Profile Manager dialog s Available Devices list displays on the top right. This list displays all hand-held devices that have been set up to communicate software. In this list, devices displayed with an enabled checkbox are already assigned the current profile as selected in the Profiles drop down list, along with all devices not currently assigned a profile (indicated by their disabled checkbox). Directly below the Available devices list, the amount of available devices (licenses) versus total number of Microlog Inspector licenses purchased is displayed. To assign a profile to a device: From the Profiles list, select the profile you wish to assign to a device. The Available devices list updates to display all the devices already assigned the selected profile (checkbox enabled), and all unassigned devices (checkbox disabled). Enable the checkbox next to the unassigned device(s) to which you wish to assign the selected profile. Click Save. Now, when the device is docked and synchronization occurs, the assigned profile s data collection settings will download to the device. Device Manager The dialog s Device Manager tab allows you to manage all of the devices currently set up to communicate with software. You can edit a device s time zone, remove a device, or create a download file of a device s current profile. 20

Step 5 Synchronization After assigning a profile to your device, there a various ways to perform the final communication setup step - synchronization; If you did not exit the Microlog Inspector and the Device Acknowledgment screen is still displayed, press the Sync button to synchronize software. If you exited Microlog Inspector, then restarted Microlog Inspector, the Communication Setup screen redisplays and prompts you to synchronize software. Press the Synchronize icon to proceed. Synchronization initiates and a progress screen displays synchronization progress. When synchronization completes, the home screen displays and shows the name of the profile assigned to the device and the Sign In icon. You are now ready to sign in to Microlog Inspector to begin collecting data. Reference the Microlog Inspector User Manual for details on Microlog Inspector operations. To Uninstall Microlog Inspector (if needed) If you choose to uninstall Microlog Inspector, follow these steps: Connect the hand-held device to your PC using ActiveSync. From the ActiveSync Tools menu, select Add/Remove Programs. The Add/Remove Programs dialog displays. 21

Uncheck the checkbox adjacent to the SKF Microlog Inspector item and press OK. Microlog Inspector will uninstall. Document Part Number EN (Revision A, 12-10) 22
