3 Introduction Be sure to read and fully understand this manual before beginning an IP e-learning course. If the course operations are not performed as described in this manual, the course history may not be correctly stored on the server. Be sure to proceed according to the instructions listed in this manual. In particular, be sure to observe information which is marked Important or Caution. 1

4 1. IP e-learning Framework IP e-learning is composed of the course video contents, questionnaire, and course materials. In this learning environment, students access the course management server via the Internet from a PC at home or another location in order to take the courses. The students access the IP e-learning course management server from a home PC or other PC that is connected to the Internet in order to take the courses. Each student logs into the system using an ID and password, selects a course for learning, and completes the questionnaire. His or her course history (course learning, questionnaire completion, etc.) is recorded automatically on the course management server. 6 3. Course Procedure Following is an explanation of the course procedure, from viewing the course videos to course completion. This is followed by an explanation of how to complete the questionnaire and check the course status. (1) Course procedure Access the course management server. Log in. View the course video. Interrupt. Log out. 1. Logging in a) Start Microsoft Internet Explorer, and access the National Center for Industrial Property Information and Training homepage ( Then click on the IP e-learning banner to access the IP e-learning page. Please click on the IP e-learning banner appears the login & User Registration screen: ( ) Select[English] Click on the IP e- learning banner. b) On the login screen, enter the user name and password which were issued to you, then click the [Start] button. Caution: Be careful to enter the information correctly. In particular, be sure to pay attention to the differences between capital and lowercase letters, and between the letter l and the number 1. Click. Caution: Maintain proper control of your user name and password. Take care that this information is never disclosed to other persons and that you do not forget it. * Reference: 4. 7 c) Upon successful login, the following site selection screen will be displayed. (1) Please select "Attend a course for PC" if you are taking classes immediately. (2) Do not use for attend a course for PC. If you select this button, Please follow the instructions displayed. (3) Please select "Personal Page" if you want to check the status of your course. Click " Attend a course for PC " button on the personal page screen to take classes after confirming the attendance status. (1) (2) (3) Attend a course for PC d) Welcome page appears. Any announcements concerning the courses appear on this page. In order to begin course learning, click the Course tab. Note: For the functions of the buttons on the top page, refer to the figure below. Display announcements and other information. Display the course menu. Not used. Set the number of messages displayed in the list and other settings. Log out. Check your current results. Check your user profile.* Check the forum and FAQs. * The "Profile" information is the information from when the user information was initially registered. Be aware that they do not reflect any transfers or other changes which have taken place since that time. 5

8 2. Starting a course a) Click on the Course tab. The left side of the screen displays the course categories, while the right side of the screen displays a list of courses for each of the categories shown at left. (1) Select All to display all Ready, Taking Course, and Finished courses. (Select Taking to display only the courses which you are currently taking.) Displays a list of courses for the category that was selected on the left side of the screen. (2) Select Trilateral cooperation to display the Trilateral cooperation courses. When an individual category is selected, only the courses for that category are displayed. The mark indicates the location which is currently selected. (In the figure at left, All Categories is selected.) Example: When Taking is selected for (1) and category XXX is selected for (2), then a list of only the courses which you are now taking in the XXX category is displayed on the right side of the screen. When All is selected for (1) and category YYY is selected for (2), then all courses for the YYY category, including courses Ready, in progress ("Taking Course"), and finished, are displayed on the right side of the screen. b) Next, from the list of courses displayed on the right side of the screen, click the button on the left side of the course which you want to study. Click. c) The course menu is displayed. Click [Study]. Click [Study]. Course menu. 6

Course status Download materials for the selected course. Begin studying. (View the course.) Start the questionnaire. Check the current course status. (course, questionnaire.) Display an outline of the selected course. Load or save the course history. * The department name and other information is the information from when the user information was initially registered. Be aware that it does not reflect any transfers or other changes which have taken place since that time. d) When you click the [Study] button, an opening page such as that shown at right appears. Click the [Next] button. Caution: The opening page is displayed only once for each course, the first time the course is started. Beginning from the second time, this page is skipped. Click the [Next] button. Check: Security message Because IP e-learning uses a high security setting, a message concerning security, such as one of those shown below, may appear. In any case, click [Yes] to begin the course. e) When the contents screen appears, click on the title of course part to begin learning. Click. 7

10 Hint: To check the contents of a course, click the [Reference] button to display a list of all course parts. To resume learning, click the [Return] button. f) Proceed with the course, viewing screens such as the one shown at right. Caution: The screen will appear as shown below until the course screen video is displayed. The amount of time that this screen appears varies depending on the Internet connection environment. Note: Functions of buttons on the course screen Header buttons. (For buttons other than those explained below, refer to Online Help. ) Not used. Displays the contents (list) for all course parts. Displays online help. Returns from reference display to the course. Changes to the contents screen. When you have finished with the current part of the course, click this button. The screen will change to the contents screen, and you can select a different course part. Interrupts the course. The screen returns to the course menu screen. To restart the course, click the [Study] button and select the interrupted course part from the contents screen. 8

11 Course screen functions Displays a video of the instructor. Displays key points, additional information, and reference information for the course. Video control panel. (See following item.) Displays the course slides. (Fully reproduces the actions of the instructor.) Pause, play, volume adjustment, fast forward, and rewind controls. Subtitle control panel. (See following item.) Video control panel Repeat play Set any desired Begin and End points and press the Play button to repeat play between those points. During repeat play, the [Play] button changes to a [Cancel] button. Click this button to cancel repeat play. Bookmark function The Mark button can be used to record any position in that part of the course, and the [Play] button used to begin play again from that position. Up to 3 positions can be set. When the course part is changed, the recorded positions are all reset. Glossary. Download course documents. Full screen display After engaging full screen display, double-click anywhere on the screen to restore it to its original size. Play speed adjustment The play speed can be adjusted from times regular speed.* Jump index Select an item from the pull-down menu to jump to that item. * Windows Media Player 12 or above is required. Windows Media Player 12 can be downloaded from Microsoft's website. Subtitle control panel English/Japanese selection Select the desired captions. Captions list display All captions that are used for the course you are viewing are displayed in a separate window. Click on any caption text in the list to jump to that location and play the video. (If the video does not jump when the text is clicked once, click it a second time.) 9

12 3. Proceeding to the next part of the course a) When you have finished studying the current part of the course, click the [Next] button. The contents will be displayed. Select the next part of the course that you want to study. Click [Next]. Click the part of the course that you want to. Important: When you have finished studying a part of the course Be sure to click the [Next] button. This records your course history on the course management server, increasing your Progress Rate. * Reference: ((3) Checking the course status) Be aware that if you use the close window button ([x] button) and close the window instead of clicking the [Next] button when you finish learning, the history will not be saved and the history will not be recorded and the progress rate will not increase. A Progress Rate of 100% is one of the requirements in order to change the course status from Taking Course to Finished. Be sure to obtain a progress rate of 100%. Be sure to click this button! Be sure that you do not exit by clicking this button! Automatic disconnect During learning, if there is no activity for a period of 60 minutes, the system will automatically disconnect. The course record is stored for the course parts prior to when you last clicked the [Next] button. However, the subsequent history is cleared. Log in again and restart the course. * Course Progress Rate When each part of a course is completed, the Progress Rate for each course part and for the total course can be checked on the contents screen as shown in the figure below. When a course history is recorded, this mark is added to that part of the course. Displays the Progress Rate for the total course. When a course history is recorded, the Progress Rate for that part becomes 100%. (Rate is either 0 or 100.) 4. Interrupting a course a) To temporarily interrupt a course, click the [Exit] button. Click the Exit button. 10

13 b) The course menu screen will appear. (1) To resume studying right away, click the [Study] button to resume the course. (2) If you will be away from the course for a long period of time, or if you will resume the course from a different PC, click the [Logout] button to log out from the system. Then log in again when you want to resume the course. (1) Click the [Study] button to resume the course right away. (2) If you will be away from the course for a long period of time, click the [Logout] button to close the window, then log in again to resume the course. Finishing a course a) When all parts of a course have been completed correctly (the total course progress rate is 100%), the ending screen appears. Click the [Next] button. This returns you to the contents screen. Verify that the Progress Rate for each course parts and for the total course is 100%, then click the [Exit] button. (It is also possible to take any of the same course parts again.) Click the [Exit] button. Click the [Next] button. b) Then complete the questionnaire. 11

14 6. Starting a different course a) When you have finished the course parts and questionnaire for one course, select a different course to study from the course list on the Course screen. Click on the button for a different course. * Hint: To re-take a course that is been changed to Finished, verify that there is a checkmark next to All for the Category radio buttons on the left side of the screen. If Taking is checked, Finished courses will not appear in the list on the right side of the screen. 7. Logging out When all steps (courses and questionnaires) are completed (or if you will be away from the course for a long period or will resume the course from a different PC). Click the [Logout] button. 12

15 (2) Questionnaire 1. From the course menu screen for that course, click [Questionnaire]. Start the questionnaire. Check: Security message Because IP e-learning uses a high security setting, a message concerning security, such as one of those shown below, may appear. In any case, click [Yes] to begin the course. 2. The screen shown at right appears. Click on the questionnaire title. Click. 13

16 3. The questionnaire opening screen appears with a list of important information. Read this information, then click the [Next] button. Click the [Next] button. 4. The questionnaire appears. Answer all of the questions, then click the [Submit] button. Click the [Submit] button. 5. To temporarily stop a questionnaire after you have started it, click the [Pause] button. Click the [Pause] button. Click here to resume the questionnaire right away. If you will be away from the questionnaire for a long period of time, or will resume the questionnaire from a different PC, click [Exit], then [Logout]. Log in again to resume the questionnaire. [Logout] button Paused is displayed. 14

17 6. When the questionnaire has been submitted, the ending screen shown at right appears. Click the [Next] button to display the screen shown below. Verify that a Submission Date is shown, then click the [Exit] button to complete the questionnaire. Click the [Next] button. Click the [Exit] button. Displays the Submission Date. Important information concerning the questionnaire: The questionnaire is one of the conditions required in order to change the course status from Taking Course to Finished. Be sure to submit it. The questionnaire can be submitted multiple times, however only the questionnaire which was submitted last is saved on the server. Therefore, when resubmitting the questionnaire, be sure to answer all of the questions again before submitting it. The questionnaire questions are the same for all course sections, however please complete them all for each section. Questions located under [Other] are optional. Automatic disconnect During the questionnaire, if there is no activity for a period of 30 minutes, the system automatically disconnects, and the data which you had entered is cleared. If this occurs, log in again and respond to the questionnaire questions from the start. * Reference: 5. Examples of Trouble and Correction * When the course parts and questionnaire are all completed, check the current course status. (Reference: ((3) Checking the course status) 7. If all steps (courses and questionnaires) are completed at this point, be sure to log out. Be sure to click the [Logout] button. 15

18 (3) Checking the course status 1. Checking the course status a) Here, you can check the Progress Rate for the current course (total course progress), the study time, study start date, last study date, questionnaire status, and other information. Click [Results] from the course menu screen. Click on [Results]. b) The screen at right appears. Check the course status. Check the course Progress Rate and other information. Check whether or not the questionnaire has been submitted. 2. Course status a) There are three types of course status: Ready, Taking Course, and Finished. In order to change the status to Finished, the following two requirements must be satisfied. The learning Progress Rate must be 100%. (All course parts must be completed.) The questionnaire must have been submitted. (For the procedure used to check the status, refer to 1.Checking the course status b) The current status can be checked on the course list screen. 16

19 4. Changing the Password Caution: Maintain proper control of your user name and password. Take care that this information is never disclosed to other persons and that you do not forget it. 1. From the screen, click the [Change password?] button to the right of the Password Expires field. Click [Change]. 2. The password change screen appears in a new window. Enter the User ID, Old Password and New Password, and enter new password in the Password Confirmation field to confirm it. Then click [OK]. Note:Enter a password with 6 to 128 characters. 17

20 5. Examples of Trouble and Correction Login not possible. (Example of trouble (1)) Login not possible. (Example of trouble (2)) The course screen does not appear. (Example of trouble (3)) The course screen does not appear. (Example of trouble (4)) There is no audio. (Example of trouble (5)) The answers were cleared during the questionnaire. (Example of trouble (6)) The Captions List window does not appear. (Example of trouble (7)) Example of trouble (1) Nothing appears when the top screen should be displayed, or else nothing happens when the [ENGLISH] or [Login] button is clicked. Cause and correction The active script (JavaScript) in the Internet Explorer settings is not set to Enable. (1) From the Internet Explorer menu bar, select Tools (T) Internet Options (O). (2) On the Internet Options screen, click the Security tab. (3) Click [Customize Level]. (4) In the scripts section, place a checkmark next to Enable Active Scripts under the Active Scripts item, then click [OK]. 18

21 Example of trouble (2) After logging in again, the following message appears: Your session has expired. Please login again. When logging in a second time, a login error occurs and login is not possible. The following message appears: Cannot log in to Internet Navigware. This user ID and password are already in use. Check that both are correct." Your session has expired. Please login again. Cause and correction If cookies are not enabled in the Internet Explorer settings, then the information acquired at login cannot be retained. This makes it impossible to check any of the subsequent pages. Cannot log in to Internet Navigware. This user ID and password are already in use. Check that both are correct. (1) From the Internet Explorer menu bar, select Tools (T) Internet Options (O). (2) On the Internet Options screen, click the Privacy tab. (3) Click Default or else set the slider tab to Medium. 19

22 Example of trouble (3) The course screen frame appears, however there is no video (or else the video does not move). Cause and correction The Internet connection speed is too slow. The course requires a broadband environment equivalent to ADSL or better. Even with broadband, depending on the time period the lines may become busy and the speed may decline. If this occurs, try accessing again at a later time. The video does not appear here, or does not move. Example of trouble (4) The screen appears blank as shown in the figure at right, and the course screen does not appear. Cause and correction This problem may occur when the Internet Explorer security level is set to High. Follow the steps below and set the security level to the standard setting. The screen remains blank and the course screen does not appear. Caution: If performing this process in a network environment, be sure to consult with the network/system administrator in advance. (1) From the Internet Explorer menu bar, select Tools (T) Internet Options (O). (2) On the Internet Options screen, click the Security tab. (3) Either set the security level to Medium or else click [Default Level], then click the [OK] button. Log in again and follow the course procedure listed in the course manual. 20

23 Example of trouble (5) There is no audio. (Figure 1) Causes and corrections Check whether the PC includes an audio output function. Adjust the volume control on the PC side (Figure 1). Adjust the volume control at the bottom of the course screen (Figure 2). Check the ON/OFF switch and volume control of the speakers (external speakers, monitor internal speakers, notebook PC internal speaker), headphones, or other audio device. Caution: Adjust the volume control before starting a course, in order to avoid inconveniencing the persons around you. (Figure 2) Example of trouble (6) After completing the questionnaire, you were away from the PC for a while, and when you attempted to resume the questionnaire, the following message appeared: Your session has expired. Please login again. After logging in again, you discovered that the answer data for the questionnaire had all disappeared. Cause and correction During the questionnaire, if there is no activity for a period of 30 minutes, the system automatically disconnects, and the data which you had entered is cleared. If you will be away from the PC for a long period of time, or will move to a different PC, be sure to first click the [Pause] button and log out. * Reference: Pausing a questionnaire Example of trouble (7) The Caption List window does not appear when the [Caption List] button on the course screen is clicked, or a message appears in a yellow box below the Internet Explorer menu bar informing you that a pop-up has been blocked. Cause and correction The Internet Explorer security function is blocking the pop-up windows. Right-click on the yellow message, then select Always Allow Pop-ups from This Site (or Temporarily Allow Pop-ups ). When the Allow pop-ups from this site? dialog box appears, select [Yes] Then again click on the [Caption List] button to display the Caption List window. * Also refer to 2.
