1 3Flex Firmware Manager Using the 3Flex Firmware Manager to update your 3Flex devices V0.1 + Versions V /07/25 created by Bettina Martin Bettina.martin@3alitytechnica.com

2 1. 3Flex Firmware Manager, general information The 3Flex Firmware Manager is a Java application used to update devices on the 3Flex Control Chain, including the SIP, SPC and RIG (MRCU). Please note that Java is platform agnostic and will run on both Mac and PC, but has only been tested with Windows. Before you begin: Ensure your computer is running the latest Java Runtime Software Turn off all Firewall software. Set up the 3Flex Control Chain. Be sure that you can see the device chain in 3Flex Control Center, which will resemble: Rig > SPC7X00 > SIP. (Do not use more than two SPCs in one device chain.) Ensure all Devices are visible in the Control Center Ensure all Devices are configured on the same network. Update devices in this order: 1. SIP 2. SPC 3. RIG Nomenclature: Device: Hardware connected to 3Flex Control Chain Unit: Firmware component of Device

3 2. The Firmware Manager Application Start FirmwareManager.jar. Click Load Firmware Pack Select the 3fp file from within the firmware directory for the Device you are updating. This tutorial addresses updating each component of the 3Flex Control Chain: The SPC (Stereo Platform Controller), SIP (Stereo Image Processor), and MRCU (Main Rig Control Unit). As indicated above, firmware packages for the SIP, SPC and Rig SIP: SipFirmware_v2.2.3fp SPC: SpcFirmware_v1.3.3fp Rig: RigFirmware_v1.9.3fp

4 Load the Firmware file of your choice. All units of your chosen Device type, and on the same network, will appear in the Devices window. *If they do not, click refresh now on the bottom of your screen. The Devices Window: The Devices window lists several units for each device connected to the chain: Clicking on each row header (State, Type, Unit etc.) sorts by that column s contents. : indicates Unit ready for an upgrade : indicates Unit s firmware matches current firmware version. Update all Units simultaneously to identical firmware versions.

5 The Devices Window: State: The Unit state indicates whether the unit should be updated or if it is already up to date: or Type: shows the Unit type (Chart shows device in grey followed by possible Unit type). SIP2x00 FPGA PPC WebInterface SPC7000 PROC INP LCD SPC7100 PROC INP Rig QC (4x) MCU (4x) MuxDemux Unit: explains the type and shows to which Control Chain the unit belongs. A 3Flex device consists of multiple units. (The 3fp file includes the firmware for all units.) Connection: shows the IP address of the SIP this unit is connected to. S/N: shows the Device serial number Current version: shows the current version as read from the unit. Available version: shows the version of the loaded 3fp file.

6 Selection: Use the selection buttons to select the units you would like to update. All: Selects all units in the list. Updatable: Selects the units that run with older firmware (those marked with red). None: Deselects all units. You can also select and deselect units by clicking on the unit in the device window. Select multiple units by holding the ctrl (PC) while clicking or shift (Mac). Refresh: Refresh now: Refresh the view of devices and related information. AutoRefresh: refreshes the view automatically. Run update: Update: Opens a new window that shows only the units you have selected. Start the update by clicking the update button in this new window. Before start: During update: Reboot when upload complete Do not disconnect the device chain during the update process! Refresh Device chain. All selected units should be indicated with a. If you still see, ensure that all appropriate units are checked, that your control chain is complete, and repeat the process.

7 3. Updating Units Load and update each Unit s firmware separately, in this order: 1 st SIP 2 nd SPC 3 rd RIG

8 1.1 To update the SIP Load the SipFirmware_vX.X.XX.3fp. In the Devices window, select the Units you would like to update (FPGA, PPC, Web), or select Updatable from the Selection window at the bottom of the Devices screen. This will isolate and select only those Units appropriate and ready for updating. Run update: Your screen notes each unit s update process. Do not disconnect the device chain during the update process! When upload is complete, the system will prompt you to reboot. Refresh Device chain. All updated units should be indicated with a section.. If not, proceed to Troubleshooting Upon Reboot: Open Control Center > Device Configuration > Factory Defaults

10 1.2 To update the SPC7XXX Load the SPCFirmware_vX.X.XX file. In the Devices window, select the Units you would like to update (the PROC, LCD, and INP), or select Updatable from the Selection window at the bottom of the Devices screen. This will isolate and select only those Units appropriate and ready for updating. Run update: Do not disconnect the device chain during the update process! Your screen notes each Unit s update process.

11 When upload is complete, the system will prompt you to reboot. Refresh Device chain. All updated units should be indicated with a. If not, proceed to Troubleshooting section. SPC7000 only: you can double check the firmware version using the LCD screen. SPC7000/7100: double check the firmware version in Control Center > Rig Control > Configuration.

12 Once all of the SPCs are updated open Control Center and reset the SPCs to factory defaults! SPC7xxx: Control Center > Rig Control > Configuration > Factory Defaults

13 4. Updating the Rig MRCU (Motor Control Units) Load the RigFirmware_vX.X.XX. In the Devices window, select the Units you would like to update (the QC, MDR, and MuxDemux), or select Updatable from the Selection window at the bottom of the Devices screen. This will isolate and select only those Units appropriate and ready for updating. As above, start the process and reboot the rigs once the update is finished. In case the update did not finish on one or more units, reboot the rig and retry the update. Refresh Device chain. All updated units should be indicated with a. If not, proceed to Troubleshooting section. Once complete, double check the firmware version in Control Center > Rig Control > Configuration.

14 Once all of the MRCUs are updated open Control Center and reset the MRCU to factory defaults! SPC7xxx: Control Center > Rig Control > Configuration > Factory Defaults

Troubleshooting: If one unit fails to update (indicated by a in the Firmware Update window, Close 3Flex Firmware Manager Reboot device chain (Rig, SPCs, SIP) Restart update process (you may update only those devices that did not update) If a unit fails to update and is no longer visible in 3Flex Firmware Manager, perform the update using: Control Center > A unit that failed updating may not show up in 3Flex Firmware Manager. If the missing unit does not appear in the 3Flex Firmware Manager, use the Device Chain (from within the 3Flex Control Center) to perform the update.

16 6. Device Chain Open Rig Control > View > change User Mode to Expert Mode Rig Control > Tools > open Device Chain

17 Connect; Scan Chain Select device that needs updating, navigate through your directories to the.fp file, and update as necessary. Rescan the chain to ensure correct version is installed.
