Part 1: Getting started Disclaimer: All of the instructions in this outline were correct at the time of publication but may be subject to change. If your computer is not already on, please turn it on now by pushing the button on the back (lower left hand side) of the monitor. When prompted, select Default and the computer will continue to boot up. Once finished, you will see the standard desktop (similar to the one shown). If the computer is already on and you can see the standard desktop or any programs already open, you should log the previous user out of the system (page 14) first and then log yourself in before continuing. Part 2: Exploring the Desktop From the standard desktop, it is possible to open files or programs on your Mac using the Apple menu, the Dock, and the Finder. The Apple menu To view the Apple menu, simply click the apple located in the top-left corner of the screen. It provides a short list of computer options (such as Shut Down and Log Out Default ) that you will find useful later on. NOTE: If a program freezes, you can select the Force Quit option from this menu to end the program. 2

The Dock The Dock is located on the bottom of the screen and should look similar to the following: It is easy to move between different applications (represented by icons) by simply clicking on them. When you click on an application, it opens and moves to the front. The menu bar along the top of the screen will change to reflect the current application. When finished with the application, you should ALWAYS save your work before closing the program. Users familiar with Windows will find the Dock similar to that of a toolbar or taskbar. The Finder The first application in the Dock is the Finder. It allows you to locate and open files. When you select the Finder, you will see the menu change on the top of the screen. You can use the File menu to open files, print files, find files, duplicate files, and send files to the trash as needed. Moving files To move a file, you need to copy the file first and then paste it to the new location. Copying files 1. Select the Finder from the Dock (if it is not already open) 2. Using the Finder, locate the file you wish to copy and click on it once 3. Select Copy Filename from the menu OR press [command] + [C] Pasting files 1. Select the Finder from the Dock (if it is not already open) 2. Using the Finder, locate the location where you want to paste your file 3. Select Paste item from the menu OR press [command] + [V] Note: You can also move a file by duplicating it and then using drag and drop to relocate it. To close the Finder, click on Close. If you prefer to keep it open, you can Minimize the Finder instead. This reduces it to an icon on the Desktop for later use. Practice: 1. Click on Microsoft Word on the Dock to open MS Word. 2. Notice how the menu has changed to reflect the open application. 3. Type in some text. 3

4. Practice using [command] + [C] to copy some text and [command] + [V] to paste it in a different location 5. Save your file to the Desktop as Practice.docx a. Click Save As from the menu b. In the Save As: area, type in the name Practice.docx to name the file c. In the Where: area, use the pull-down listing to locate the Desktop d. In the Format: area, select Word Document (.docx) e. Click Save to save the file Note: The Save dialog box will differ slightly amongst applications. The key elements are the filename and the location to save to. Since this file is just intended for temporary use, the Desktop is an acceptable save location. 6. Close MS Word a. Click Quit Word from the program s menu OR press [command] + [Q] 7. Again notice how the menu has changed now that MS Word is closed. 8. Click on the Practice.docx icon on the Desktop and use the menu to duplicate the file. 9. Click on the Practice copy.docx icon on the Desktop and drag it to the trash can to delete it. 10. You can try other file manipulations until you are comfortable. Ensure the file Practice.docx remains on the Desktop as you will need it in the next practice section. Part 3: Using the network A network is an organized hierarchy of files, folders, and directories (sometimes called drives). As a student in this course, you will regularly need to access the M: drive. The M: drive is where students store their files. Before you open any applications, you should connect to the network and find your M: drive so you can properly save your work there. Step 1 Connect to the network 1. The menu bar on the top should look similar to the following: 2. Click on the menu bar to expand the sub-menu. 4

3. Click the bottom option. 4. You will need to specify which server to connect to. Students should type in clccv7 in the Server Address: section and select Connect. Refer to the screenshot. 5. To connect to the network, students must have a valid network login and password. Type in your MacEwan network login id and password in the appropriate locations as shown. When finished, select Connect. 6. If you know which volume(s) you want, you can select it by clicking on it (for example, clcc10.clccvol7) and selecting OK. Otherwise, you can choose all of the volumes by clicking on the first volume, hold down the shift key, and then click on the last volume in the list. When ready, press OK. 7. The volume(s) you selected will show up on the right side of your desktop. Step 2 Locate your network drive (M: drive) 1. Double click the drive volume you want to open to bring it up in the Finder. 2. Within the Finder, you can follow the folders down to your M: drive by clicking them in succession. 3. Once you can see your M: drive (the folder with your login name on it), you ll be able to save your work onto your network drive when necessary. Step 3 Disconnecting your network drives 1. Refer to the instructions on page 14 for this step. It is done at the end of each session. 5

Note: In the future, any problems that you may have with respect to accessing the network or your should be directed to Information and Technology Services (ITS) via the Service First Helpdesk on the second floor LRC. Be prepared to show your ID card! You can also phone the help desk at (497 HELP). Practice: Move the file Practice.docx to your network drive. 1. Click on the Practice.docx icon on the Desktop 2. Select Copy Practice.docx from the menu OR press [command] + [C] 3. Click on the Finder on the Dock 4. Browse to your M: drive 5. Select New Folder from the menu and name it Lab 1 practice 6. Open up the Lab 1 practice folder 7. Select Paste item from the menu OR press [command] + [V] 8. Verify that the file Practice.docx now exists both on the Desktop and in your new folder Note: Remember that files saved to the computer (Desktop or hard drive) are automatically deleted at the end of each session and should not be used as permanent storage. Files on the network drive will be there until you choose to delete them. Worksheet Exercise: Complete Section 1 - a on your Worksheet. Part 4: Logging on to the portal Students can access many useful sources of information through the student portal. With the portal, students can (a) change their password, (b) use their , (c) access LRC info, (d) access Blackboard, and traverse many other options as well. 1. Launch a web browser by clicking the icon for Safari on the Dock. 2. Once the browser has started up, type the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) in the address field and press the Enter key. This will take you to the portal login screen (if you are not there already by default). 3. On the left hand side (LHS), you will see a login area. Fill in the information required. Your MacEwan Network ID and Password are the same as the ones that you used earlier. Refer to the screen shot on the following page. If you cannot login successfully, ask your Lab Instructor for help. 6

4. Once logged in, you should explore the portal options carefully and familiarize yourself with what can be done through the portal. To return to the main screen at any time, click on the Home option from the menu bar on the top left side of the screen. 5. When finished using the portal, it is imperative that you logout ; otherwise, anyone else who uses your machine can access your personal information through the portal. To logout, click on the option to Log Out on the top right side of the screen (as shown). Part 5: Changing your password Once you begin using your network account, you probably have only a few grace logins within which to change your password (particularly if your password is currently set to your ID number). If you do not change your password within this time period, your account will become frozen and you will have to go to ITS for help. To avoid this problem, you should change your network password using the student portal. Before you continue, think carefully about your new password. The password you choose must be 6 8 characters long. Passwords are case-sensitive and may consist of letters, numbers, and symbols. Never choose a password that can be easily guessed. Remember to protect your password by not writing it down or telling it to anyone. If you ever forget your password, contact ITS. 1. Open up a web browser and login to the portal. Refer to Part 4: Logging on to the portal if you do not know how. 2. Select Tech Support from the top menu. Click on the option to change your password. You may be prompted to give your Username and Password again. 3. On this new screen, you will see a Change Password area. Follow the directions as indicated on screen. Please note that changing your password here will change your MacEwan login password as well as all other passwords associated with the portal. If you have difficulty changing the password, ask your Lab Instructor for assistance. 4. If you are unsure whether your password was successfully changed, you can logout of the portal and try logging in again with your new password. If you can login, then it was a successful change; otherwise, you may have to try changing your password again. 7
