3 List Building Starter Course Lesson 2 Writing Your Campaign 3 Progress Report At this point, you should have: a web site, an autoresponder account, a free giveaway, and a squeeze page. If you have not completed any of those steps, I highly suggest you finish whichever step you are still working on, before beginning this lesson. This series of lessons is designed to teach you how to build a fully-functional list building campaign, and if you are not completing some of the steps, you will not have a fully functional list building campaign, and as a result, you will not a get the results you are looking for. There are no shortcuts in internet marketing! Introduction to Writing Your Campaign In this lesson, I am going to give you step by step instructions for writing your own campaign and uploading it to aweber. If you have not written much before, or if this is your first foray into writing, this will be a highly uncomfortable lesson. You may not like the s you write; you may have difficulty composing them. But this is a crucial step in your progress online, and without writing a series of s, you will not be able to monetize your list. One thing that is important to understand is that your first set of s will not be your last. The s you write in this lesson and upload for your first campaign will change over time. You will be able to study each you write after they have been read, and determine whether or not the is a good strictly judging by the number of people who open your s, or click through your s. So for this exercise, the key is to write an entire 20 message series and upload it to your aweber account. It does not have to be perfect, it does not have to contain your very best it simply has to exist. Over time, you can improve it. Of course, the intent is that you will create the very best you can, right now, but do not allow yourself to be frustrated when the s do not seem perfect they rarely are at first. Step One Planning Your Campaign: There are approximately 5 types of s you can write: 1) Content s these are s that teach your readers something, or give them information. These s are great for building rapport, and building up credibility.

4 List Building Starter Course Lesson 2 Writing Your Campaign 4 2) Gift s these s contain free gifts for your subscribers, and also are effective at building value and rapport 3) Affiliate sales s these s contain links to affiliate programs you choose to represent, and give the subscribers and opportunity to purchase products that will enhance their life or business 4) Your own products sales s these s are designed to lead readers to your own product sales pages. 5) Feedback s these s are designed to ask your subscribers for information (feedback) about themselves, their needs, and their niche. These are tremendous rapport and relationship builders. At this point, I want to create for you a master plan for your sequence. Because you are just getting started with list building, you may not have all the resources and tools necessary to create all the s at once, but I want you to be able to create as many as possible now, and then alter or add as time goes on. Keep in mind, although one of the goals of this course is that you will create 20 messages, that number can go up over time. An ideal 20 message series might look like this: 1) Send links to your downloads (gift ) 2) Send letter confirming receipt of gifts, ask readers what they are most wanting to learn from your s (feedback ) 3) Send an article about your niche (content ) 4) Send an appropriate free gift (free gift ) 5) Send an affiliate offer (affiliate sales ) 6) Send a free gift 7) Send a content 8) Send an offer to your product 9) Send a free gift 10) Send a content 11) Send an affiliate

5 List Building Starter Course Lesson 2 Writing Your Campaign 5 12) Send a free gift 13) Send a content 14) Send an offer to your product 15) Send a free gift 16) Send a content 17) Send an affiliate offer 18) Send a feedback 19) Send a content 20) Send a free gift Obviously, you can continue this list ad infinitum. Now I want you to take this list, and next to each suggested , write what you can send in that . For example, for the free gift s, next to the line, send a free gift , write in the name of the free gift you are sending. For the affiliate offer, write in what you are going to promote. For your own product, write in what you are selling. And for the content s, write a suggested topic you can write about. I realize that you may not have enough content, free gifts, promotions, or affiliate products to write all of these s today. But I want you to write this series as though you do; you can add the actual links later. In most cases, you can find or write content s and find a few free pdfs in your niche which you can giveaway. And by the time this course is completed, you will have 3 affiliate products to promote, so you can just add those s in once you have the affiliate products. It is important, however, that you create as much of this series as possible, this week, and get the s into your aweber autoresponder account (I give you step by step instructions later in this lesson). As an example, your list of s might look like this: 1) Send links to your downloads (gift ) (your free giveaway product link) 2) Send letter confirming receipt, ask readers what they are most wanting to learn from your s (feedback )

6 List Building Starter Course Lesson 2 Writing Your Campaign 6 3) Send an article about your niche (content ) (topic of article) 4) Send an appropriate free gift (free gift ) (name of free gift item) 5) Send an affiliate offer (affiliate sales ) (name of affiliate product) 6) Send a free gift (name of free gift) 7) Send a content (topic of article) 8) Send an offer to your product (name of your product) and so on. At this point, you may be thinking, I do not have any affiliate products yet to represent, or products of my own. That is ok just write (need to get affiliate product) next to the . This list is going to serve as a kind of master plan for the future and as you fill up the demands of each of the s on this list, your business will be growing. Aweber is set up in such a way that you can add s to your campaign over time, either by adding them to the end of the campaign, or by adding them to the middle of the campaign. So do not allow fear that you do not have enough content to prevent you from beginning to load s into your account. Step Two- Writing Your Free Gift s I like to keep my free gift s short and to the point. For example, this is what my first looks like: The subject line reads: Your name the ebook download The reads: {!firstname_fix}, Thanks for requesting my ebook name the book. Download it here: (link to book) I have also created a bonus ebook for you; download it here: (link to book)

7 List Building Starter Course Lesson 2 Writing Your Campaign 7 To your success, {!firstname_fix} is the command in aweber to use the subscribers first name, and to capitalize the first letter of the name. Also, be sure to hit enter at the end of each line, and end each line at no more than 65 characters (60 is better), so that when the s are delivered, they will be uniform. If you do not create a hard return (hitting enter) at the end of the lines, some s will be delivered with the copy all the way across the screen (hard to read) and some will be delivered with the lines cutoff at 65 characters (really ugly). Your later free gift s can be quite simple: Subject line: {!firstname_fix}, a free gift for you Here is a free gift for you: (link to gift) Take care, This does not have to be fancy, and should not contain any other links or sales pitches of any kind. This is simply a free gift, and is being used to create rapport. When people receive free gifts, they often become grateful, and they will generally begin to trust you more. You will immediately stand out from others online who are constantly pitching something. Step Three Writing Your Content s To write your content s, simply write an article and copy and paste it into the . This article should be about something that relates to the topic of your niche. If you have already been writing articles for submission, or you have articles on your web site, simply use those.

8 List Building Starter Course Lesson 2 Writing Your Campaign 8 If you do not have any articles, this step may take you a little longer but it is important that you do not skip these content s. Write 300+ word articles about something in your niche, and put them in these s. This is what my typical content will look like: Subject line: How to do (something in your niche) I have written an article I think will be useful to you: (article) Hope this has been informative to you. (link to one of my sales page) (Obviously if you do not have a sales page yet, this can be a link to your main site, or to an affiliate product, or you can omit this step; you can always add it in later.) Step Four Writing Your Affiliate s The purpose of writing affiliate s is to send traffic to the affiliate sales pages, not to sell your subscriber on the product. You see, the affiliate sales page is designed to do the selling, all your does is recommend that the subscriber take a look at the sales page. I like to keep my affiliate referral s short and to the point, like this: Subject line: How to (something the affiliate product does or teaches) body: I have recently come across a product that (something the affiliate product does or teaches). Take a look at it here: (the affiliate url). Take care,

Here is an incredible resource: (url to affiliate product) To your success, Step Five Writing Your Own Product Sales s In these s, you are going to recommend someone to take a look at a sales page for something you have created. In these s, just as in the affiliate s, I do not like to sell. I much prefer to simply refer someone to my own sales page, in much the same way that I refer someone to an affiliate page. Here is an example of an promoting your own product: Subject line: Your (name or subject of my product) Body: I have just finished writing a brand new ebook on (topic of your product). Check it out here: (url to product) To your success,

10 List Building Starter Course Lesson 2 Writing Your Campaign 10 Here is another example: Subject line: Do you know how to (what I teach in product)? Body, Do you know how to (what I teach in product)? Learn how this week: (url to product) Step Six: Writing Feedback s This is one of my favorite s, and I use it to build rapport with my subscribers. The idea with feedback s is that you ask your subscriber a question or several questions, then you answer their questions. This creates an incredible level of loyalty and credibility. What I normally do is send out a set of questions, and since I get as many as responses, I answer the top 5 questions in one group . This will answer most of the questions, as many of the questions people ask are very similar to the ones asked by others. When I send out the group , I indicate that I have gotten a lot of questions, and instead of answering them individually, since many of the questions are similar, I am answering them in one . I also indicate that if a question was asked that is particular to someone s own web site, that I will send them a personal response. Once I have sent out the group , I go back and answer each person s question that was not answered in the group . This creates a lot of rapport, both with the people whose questions you answered, but also with those subscribers who are not as active on your list. You see, people like to be a part of big things and when inactive subscribers see that 50 or 100 people have personally gotten involved and asked some questions, and that I have responded, they begin to feel as though they are part of a community and many in turn become involved.

11 List Building Starter Course Lesson 2 Writing Your Campaign 11 Here is a sample Subject line: {!firstname_fix}, I need your help body: I need your help. I am currently in the process of writing a new book on (topic of your niche or proposed niche) and want to make sure I am including everything you want to learn about. So, what are the top three things you want to know about (topic of your niche)? Please just hit reply to answer these questions. Thanks in advance for your help. (Notice that this serves another purpose announcing that I have a new book on the way, one which will answer their questions) Here is another example: Subject line: {!firstname_fix}, some questions for you body: Hi! I hope you have been enjoying the free gifts and the articles I have been sending. To make sure that I tailor my future s to your needs, I have a few questions for you: 1) Question about something in your niche 2) What do you want to learn next about (your niche)? 3) What is the hardest thing about (your niche) Please just hit reply to answer these questions. Thanks in advance!

12 List Building Starter Course Lesson 2 Writing Your Campaign 12 You will notice that I do not use any fancy software to do these surveys. You see, the point of these s is to create rapport and I believe that the correspondence does a better job of that than creating some survey, and just sending my subscribers to it. Sure, this way takes a little longer but it results in sales, long run, so it is worth it. Step Seven- Writing Your s This is one of the most important things you can do actually writing these s. I realize that if you have never written any s, this may feel scary. But do it anyway. Follow my examples. Write short, to the point, s. You can always change them later. Again, if you do not have enough content or links for 20 s, write 10 or however many you can. By the end of this course, if you follow all the steps in the rest of the lessons, you should easily have enough for 20 s. Just do it! Step Eight Uploading s to Your Aweber Autoresponder List In this step, I am going to give you step-by-step instructions for uploading your s to your aweber autoresponder list. Please follow each step in order. If you get stuck on one step, figure it out before you keep going. Send me an . Use the live chat feature on aweber. But figure it out. Each step is necessary to do the next step in line. 1) Login to your aweber account. At this point I am going to assume you have followed the directions in your autoresponder tutorial to set up your autoresponder list. If you have not done this, go back to the tutorial and create a list for your autoresponder campaign. Then, go to the pulldown menu that reads: change list and select the list you want to put the s in. If you only have one list, your list should already be in that box, and you won t need to select another. 2) Once you are in the correct list, click on messages (on the top row of tabs). 3) Click on followup (on second row of links) 4) Click on add message

13 List Building Starter Course Lesson 2 Writing Your Campaign 13 5) Check the box next to: click tracking (this will enable you to see how many people click through to the link in your ). 6) In the box subject type in your subject line 7) In the next two boxes, copy and paste your . The lower box is for html messages (you can just put regular text in there, but the message will be converted to html so aweber can track your open rate); the upper box is for plain text messages. Above the text message box, click wrap long lines if your lines go past the edge of the white space in the box. This will help make the look better when delivered. If your url is longer than the white space, it will also wrap the url, and then it won t work correctly. Be sure to fix that (it is OK if the url goes out past the white space). 8) Click save 9) You should now be at a screen with followup messages near the top. You should see your message subject line in a list below (it will be the only one on the list if it is the first you have written). 10) Click on test. Follow the directions on the next screen that comes up (enter your name and address). You will receive a test in your box. 11) Check the test . Make sure it looks like you want it to look. Click on the url to make sure it works. 12) If you do not like something about the , click on the subject line on the followup messages screen. This will reopen the so you can make changes. Your first is loaded and ready to go. To put in your second , repeat the steps above. The only difference for the second is that you will have a choice at the top of the screen where you create the , for how many days after the last should this go out. If you are just starting out, I recommend you set that to 4 days. As you become more experienced, you can go back in and change that delay period. Go ahead and input all the s you have written so far. If you do not have all the s, go ahead and enter the ones you have. You can enter new ones later using these steps, and if you want to add a new to the middle of your sequence, just create it as per these directions, then once you get to the followup messages screen, you can click and drag it to where you want it in the sequence.
