Synaptic Labs HyperFlash Programmer for the Nios II Ecosystem User Manual An easy to use solution for programming the HyperFlash memory with Nios II based projects. Introduction Synaptic Labs HyperFlash Programmer for Windows/Linux enables developers to program the contents of the HyperFlash memory employed on the HyperMAX 10M25 and 10M50 board from within the Intel Quartus Development Environment. S/Labs can also readily port our HyperFlash Programmer to your custom FPGA board. S/Labs HyperBus Memory Controller (HBMC) IP drives the pins of the HyperFlash memory. Our HBMC Qsys Component integrates seamlessly with the Nios II processor Software Built Tools (SBT). Our solution permits a Nios II core to boot directly from HyperFlash memory if desired. Nios II applications can then execute directly from HyperFlash, or be copied to SDRAM using Altera s standard boot loader code. Additionally, large applications, such as Linux, can reside in the HyperFlash Memory and be executed by the Nios II processor. For more information about how to build a bootable system from the HyperFlash device for a Nios II processor application, refer to the reference project supplied. Contact S/Labs for more info: info@synaptic-labs.com SYNAPTIC LABS 10 JULY
Directory Contents The SLL HyperFlash programmer package contains a number of files. SLL_HyperFlashProgrammer_gui.tcl: This is the main tcl script. It performs the following functions: A. Loads the SLL_HyperFlashProgrammer_v3_2 bitstream to the HyperMAX board. B. Establishes a connection between the SLL Programmer and the System Console C. Converts the hex file generated by Nios II Software Built Tools into a binary file. D. Uploads the newly generated binary file E. Programs the flash Readme.txt: A text based user manual for Synaptic Labs HyperFlash Programmer. SLL_HyperFlashProgrammer_10M25_v3_2.sof: The FPGA bitstream for the HyperFlash Programmer for the HyperMAX 10M25 development board. SLL_HyperFlashProgrammer_10M50_v3_2.sof: The FPGA bitstream for the HyperFlash Programmer for the HyperMAX 10M50 development board. 3 Preparing the files for programming Synaptic Labs HyperFlash Programmer for Windows/Linux is the first programmer available for the HyperFlash memory on the HyperMAX development board. It facilitates software development for the HyperFlash Memory on the HyperMAX board. This Version has very fast downloads, and is useable in practice. Contact Synaptic Labs if you require support for your custom board, and if you require more advanced capabilities in our HyperFlash programmer. The Nios II processor Software Build Tools (SBT) for Eclipse generates an Intel HEX file to program the HyperFlash memory. Synaptic Labs HyperFlash Programmer programs binary files directly into the HyperFlash memory. Synaptic Labs HyperFlash Programmer.tcl script will automatically convert the.hex file to a.bin file. This is done using the nios2-elf-objcopy binary which is included in the Quartus distribution. Note: Make sure the path to the nios2-elf-objcopy program is properly set. The SOPC_KIT_NIOS2 variable (---/altera-install directory/nios2eds) needs to be present. SYNAPTIC LABS 10 JULY
Programming the HyperFlash memory with firmware binary file Connect a USB cable from the USB Blaster port located on the HyperMAX board to the host PC. Open Intel Quartus Prime Design Software (Quartus). Click on Tools -> System Debugging Tools -> System Console. This will open Intel System Console in a new window. SYNAPTIC LABS 10 JULY
Make sure the HyperMAX board is connected to the host PC via the USB cable. Press on "Refresh Connections" button in the system-console to ensure that the HyperMax board is properly connected. Now we can execute Synaptic Labs HyperFlashProgrammer script in order to start the programmer. In the system-console, select File->Execute Script. A new popup will open. Browse to the location where S/Labs' HyperFlashProgrammer is located. Select SLL_HyperFlashProgrammer_gui.tcl script. Clock Ok to continue. A new panel will open in the System-Console window. SYNAPTIC LABS 10 JULY
First we must load S/Lab's Hyper Flash Programmer bitstream into the FPGA. Press on Choose Sof File button. Browse to the location where Synaptic Labs' HyperFlash Programmer is located and select the correct SLL_HyperFlashProgrammer_xxxx_v3_2.sof file for your board. Next, load the hex file that needs to be programmed into the HyperFlash memory. Press on Choose Hex File. Browse to the location where the generated hex file resides. ( for the NIOS II Software Build Tools (SBT) for Eclipse, normally, the generated hex file is located in <<project_directory/software/software_project_name/mem_init/>>). Then, we need to set the Address Offset location where the hex file will be programmed in HyperFlash. You can set the address offset location by simply sliding the pointer to desired location. The slider minimum step value is 1 megabyte. (minimum step value can easily be changed if required). Press Program EBV HyperMax Board to start the programming operation. If the programming is successful, the Program Success LED text button will light green. Otherwise, the Errors text button will light red. The binary file is now programmed into the HyperFlash memory. Note: You need to restart the system-console every time you need to reprogram the HyperFLash. This seems to be a limitation of system-console program. SYNAPTIC LABS 10 JULY
Testing the system (precompiled example can only be tested on the HyperMAX 10M25 FPGA board) An example project is provided with the Synaptic Labs HyperFlash programmer. We can download the FPGA bit stream (NIOS_HyperFlash_10M25_example.sof) located inside the example directory. This is done using either: the nios2-configure-sof program inside a linux terminal or the Quartus design Environment (Quartus->Tools->Programmer). Make sure the HyperMAX USB blaster cable connected to the host PC. Press the Add File button and locate the NIOS_HyperFlash_10M25_example.sof. Once done, press the Start button to program the FPGA. Note: This example project uses a number of time-limited cores. Hence some pop-up boxes will show on the screen. Do not close these boxes unless you want to terminate the application. SYNAPTIC LABS 10 JULY
Once the FPGA bit-stream is downloaded, open a linux/windows terminal console and execute the nios2-terminal command. $ nios2-terminal The LEDs on the HyperMax board will count downwards. SYNAPTIC LABS 10 JULY
