Install Quartus II Stand-Alone Programmer Before connecting the Programming Pod to the computer, begin by downloading and installing the Altera Quartus II Stand-Alone Programmer. You will need to create an Altera account to access the software via the link below: Once the program is finished downloading proceed with installing it. Page 1 of 12

Once the Altera programming software has finished installing, plug the Programming Pod into the computer's USB port.

Right click it and select 'Update Driver Software...' to install the programmer driver.

Select the option to 'Browse my computer for driver software' and navigate Altera program Navigate to the Altera USB-Blaster

3 Once the Altera programming software has finished installing, plug the Programming Pod into the computer's USB port. Then open the Device Manager and you should see the Altera USB- Blaster as an uninstalled device. Right click it and select 'Update Driver Software...' to install the programmer driver. If the driver automatically installs then the driver doesn t need to be manually updated. Select the option to 'Browse my computer for driver software' and navigate Altera program Navigate to the Altera USB-Blaster Driver folder shown below. Once you locate the driver folder continue through the windows driver install. When the driver has been installed the Altera USB-Blaster will show up as a USB device in the device manager. Do not touch any high-voltage components (e.g., power entry module, power switch, line wiring, power supply module, etc.) while the cover is removed. Each display unit has two FPGA/MCU boards that are accessible either via a remote programming port on the back of the unit or by removing the enclosure cover. Each board has one Altera FPGA and one SiLabs MCU that are separately programmed. The Programming Pod can program the FPGA and MCU devices on one board through the flex cable. Please refer to Appendix B to identify the programming port, and to locate the programming headers for FPGA #1 and FPGA #2, if the unit has no programming port see Appendix C to identify Board #1 and Board #2, and to locate the programming header on each board SiLabs Flash Utility With the VectorVGA Pro unit off, connect the 12-position flat flex cable from the Programming Pod to the programming port of the desired board (FPGA #1 or FPGA #2), with the metal contacts on the cable facing the metal prongs of each connector (i.e., it is easy to insert flex cables backwards; no damage is done but the programmer won t work). Ensure the Programming Pod is plugged into the computer's USB port. Turn display power on when the Programming Pod is completely connected. Run the Flash Utility, and then select 'Connect'. If you have a connection problem make sure the flex cable is plugged in properly and the display power is on. Page 5 of 12

7 2.2. Altera FPGA Programming Procedure Starting with the Programming Pod connected and display power turned on. Open the Altera Quartus II Programmer. The first step is to set up the programming hardware. (I.e. the USB-Blaster) Make sure that the JTAG mode is selected and click the 'Hardware Setup...' button. Select the USB-Blaster from the drop down menu and click close. Then click 'Add File...' and select the.jic file supplied by IST. FIRM xxxx.jic Page 7 of 12

8 Once the file is loaded check the 'Program/Configure' and 'Verify' check boxes and click the start button to begin programming. When the programming has completed the top status bar and bottom message window will indicate that the programming has been successful. Page 8 of 12

9 If you receive an error message, check the VectorVGA Pro's power, the flat flex cable and the USB connection. Example Error Message When programming is successful, cycle power on the VectorVGA Pro display to restart the system with the new FPGA firmware. If the firmware number on the splash screen has been changed, this can be verified by turning DIP Switch #1 on for the board that was programmed. The splash screen will show the loaded firmware version. Turn DIP Switch #1 off when done. Page 9 of 12

Appendix B: Programming Port Header Reference The purpose of this appendix is to identify the programming port and the proper connectors to use for programming each

11 Appendix B: Programming Port Header Reference The purpose of this appendix is to identify the programming port and the proper connectors to use for programming each FPGA/MCU board. The programming port can be accessed by removing the metal covering plate which is held down by 2 Phillips head screws. Once the cover is removed the programming headers can be seen. The programming header for FPGA #1 is labeled 1 and the programming header for FPGA #2 is labeled 2. Simply connect the programming pod to each FPGA via the available headers to program the system. Be sure the insert the flat flex cable with the metal tabs facing up into the metal prongs of the connectors. Page 11 of 12

12 Appendix C: Board Programming Header Reference The purpose of this appendix is to identify the programming header on each FPGA/MCU board, and identify Board #1 and Board #2. Note: actual systems may be slightly different than the picture above. Location of Programming Header: Both FPGA/MCU Boards have a header that is labeled JTAG as shown above. This header connects to the Programmer Pod (warning: connect and disconnect only when display is powered off). How to Identify Board #1 and Board #2: Board #1 Board #2 The picture above identifies Board #1 and Board #2, and a short description is given below: Both boards have an identical FPGA section (see the large square black IC), although they may be populated slightly differently. Board #1 is the larger board. Analog signals enter on the left side through one flex cable, and digital signals output to Board #2 through two flex cables. Board #2 is the smaller board. Digital signals from Board #1 enter on the left side through two flex cables, and digital video outputs to the LCD adapter board on the right through two flex cables. Page 12 of 12
