RadianceIES: Radiance Images IES Virtual Environment Copyright 2015 Integrated Environmental Solutions Limited. All rights reserved. No part of the manual is to be copied or reproduced in any form without the express agreement of Integrated Environmental Solutions Limited.
Image Display There are two main types of image generated by Radiance - luminance images and illuminance images (the difference between these is explained in the Radiance documentation). Some of the options are shared by each type and some are available only for the particular type. The menu and toolbars for both type of image are shown below - The only other type of image is a contour image which is labelled as a "Processed image" - an example of this is shown below - VE 2015 RadianceIES: Radiance Images 1
The "File" menu is common to all types of image - Open - open a different picture Copy - copy this picture into the Windows clipboard, it can then be pasted into any application that accepts a bitmap image e.g. Word, Photoshop Save - save picture as a JPEG or bitmap Print - print picture Summary - display picture information Close - close window Scale x2 - creates a new image which is scaled by 2 Scale x4 - creates a new image which is scaled by 4 The "Open", "Save", "Copy" and "Print" options correspond to the first four buttons on the toolbar (for both "Luminance" and "Illuminance" images) - Note: there is no toolbar on a contour image. VE 2015 RadianceIES: Radiance Images 2
The "Summary" button pops-up the following window - This displays some of the information about the image e.g. Eye position, Focus position, Sky file, etc. This is also the information that is displayed in the "Images" tab (when not showing the thumbnail image). VE 2015 RadianceIES: Radiance Images 3
For luminance images the "Glare" menu is as follows - Sources - show or hide the glare sources This allows the glare sources to be displayed or not. These sources are displayed as a red circle with the intensity of the source at the centre (luminance = nits). Indices - show pop-up window showing glare indices This displays a window showing the GUTH Visual Comfort Probability (% of people who would be satisfied), the CIE Glare Index and the "Unified Glare Rating" for the analysed glare angles (-ve angles to right, +ve angles to left). The default glare angles are -60 to +60 degrees in steps of 10 degrees. VE 2015 RadianceIES: Radiance Images 4
Analyse glare - show pop-up window to reset the glare parameters This allows the user to modify the glare parameters and perform a glare analysis. When the glare threshold is set to 0 the program will calculate the threshold as 7 times the average luminance. Colour - set colour of data displayed on image (Black, White, Red, Green, Blue) VE 2015 RadianceIES: Radiance Images 5
Contours - create a contour image of luminance Pops-up the following window - When the required parameters have been selected, "OK" will generate the image - VE 2015 RadianceIES: Radiance Images 6
For Luminance images the toolbar is as follows - The first four buttons on the toolbar correspond to the "Open", "Save", "Copy" and "Print" menu items (common with Illuminance images), and the last four correspond to "Indices", "Analyse glare", "Summary" and "Exposure". Exposure The exposure can be adjusted from 5 (under exposed) to +5 (over exposed) The luminance value will be displayed in the field at the bottom left of the image as the cursor is moved across the image. A left mouse click will display this value on the image and a right mouse click will delete the nearest value. The same thing happens with an illuminance image. VE 2015 RadianceIES: Radiance Images 7
The Illuminance pull-down menu contains the following options - Points - handle illuminance "points" When the cursor is moved across an illuminance image the Lux value is displayed in the field at the bottom left of the window. If the left mouse button is clicked at any point the Lux value [or DF value] is displayed and the position stored in a list of points. These points can be saved in a file using the "Save" option and reloaded using the "Load" option. The "Clear" option deletes all the stored points (the right mouse can be used to delete individual points). Luminance values can be displayed on a luminance image in the same way - but at present there is no mechanism to save or load the points. VE 2015 RadianceIES: Radiance Images 8
The "Statistics" option will generate data on the full image, the "Area of Interest" and the stored points, and show in a text window - Units - pops the following sub-menu only) simulation) (Lux) DF/SC - switches units to Daylight Factor (CIE Overcast Sky or Sky Component (depending on Lux - switches units to lumens per square metre Foot-Candle - switches units to lumens per square foot Colours - pops the following sub-menu This allows the user to change the colour of the displayed Lux/DF values, this may be necessary to give a contrast between the text and background. VE 2015 RadianceIES: Radiance Images 9
Lux Contours - pops-up the following window - The Style can be Contour lines, Contour bands or False colour. The Show the scale tick-box can be used to switch the scale on or off (where the same scale is used for a series of images it can often be useful to cut the scale out and display separately). The default values for Scale and Divisions can be set to any user defined values. If the "User Text" tick-box is active the default label ("Lux") will be replaced by the text in the blank field. DFContours - pops-up the same window, with different default scale and divisions. This works in the same way as the Lux Contours option. VE 2015 RadianceIES: Radiance Images 10
Area of Interest for Plan Views In versions of the software since V5.9 an Area of Interest (AOI) is automatically generated for zones when they are selected via the Model Browser (only if the file doesn't exist), this file has the unique Zone ID name. This generates the AOI based on the floor of the zone and has by default a boundary 0.5 metres inside the external boundary (since V5.9.2 it is possible to change this default setting). This AOI can then be edited or a new AOI created, this is explained below. The AOI will work for WP simulations or for Illuminance Plan views. An even more recent addition is the menu item "Settings" ->"AOI Shrinkage" which allows the user to define the distance from the outside of the zone at which the default AOI is created - VE 2015 RadianceIES: Radiance Images 11
In cases where we have generated an illuminance simulation for an irregular shaped zone or a simulation that covers more than one zone (e.g. a floor of a building), we often need to be able to generate statistics (average Lux/DF) for a subset of the image. We do this by creating the Area of Interest (AoI). This can be defined either by two points to represent an orthogonal box - or by a general polygon - VE 2015 RadianceIES: Radiance Images 12
A menu item has been create under the Illuminance menu - AoI, which has four options - Load, Save, Clear and Edit. The Load and Save options read and write a file which stores the defined AoI, this file has the same structure as a points file and has the extension.aoi - AoI Points File : X,Y positions of AoI points on a PIC file IMAGE_NAME=R1_wp.pic IMAGE_TIME= (15:07:12, Wednesday April 23, 2003) POINTS=2 [x,y] 1.0, , 1.0 Note that the points are stored in X, Y model co-ordinates, which means that the AoI can be applied to any size of image. The Clear option deletes the defined AoI. The "Edit" option allows the user to manipulate individual points. VE 2015 RadianceIES: Radiance Images 13
The outline of the AoI can be made visible or not by using the Show Area of Interest check box on the Lux Grid Settings pop-up window - You will also note on this pop-up window another check-box - "AoI Mode", this can be used to create an AoI as follows - Firstly set the AoI Mode check-box ON - In this mode when a point is clicked on the image it becomes the first point of the Area of Interest (point labelled 1 below) - When the next point is clicked it becomes the second point - VE 2015 RadianceIES: Radiance Images 14
Continue digitizing the polygon - Do not close the polygon (i.e. do not digitize the first point twice) - VE 2015 RadianceIES: Radiance Images 15
Alternatively, when a single zone is selected in the Model Browser a default AoI file is created for the zone, this is named using the "Room ID" (unique 8 character label) and follows the boundary of the zone - For example the zone "Zone B" which has the Room Id "ZNB_0000" would generate the AoI file "ZNB_0000.aoi". If this file exists it will not be overwritten (so any subsequent edits will not be lost). You will note from the image above that the default AoI extends to the outer boundary of the zone (including the area occupied by the walls). Also note that the AoI has no notion of height - so if you have the same zone on multiple floors of a building you can use the same AoI for each level. VE 2015 RadianceIES: Radiance Images 16
The Edit option pops-up a window as shown - These values can be modified as required by the user. The "+" button will add 0.5 to the selected value and the "-" button will subtract 0.5 from the selected value. [when generating statistics on a zone it is recommended that the outer 0.5 metres is ignored] VE 2015 RadianceIES: Radiance Images 17
When the Statistics option in the Points menu is used, the values are also calculated over the AoI (in addition to the whole image and and points that are defined) - This shows the minimum, maximum, average and two additional measures - the uniformity (= minimum/average) and the diversity (= minimum/maximum). These values are shown as X for the whole image as the minimum Lux value = 0.0. These values are displayed in whichever units are currently selected (i.e. Lux, DF or Foot-Candle). When a Threshold value is generated, it is only applied to the AoI (if defined) - VE 2015 RadianceIES: Radiance Images 18
