4 Basic Features This section is called the Tools bar and it contains tools such as Pens, Shapes and Lines. You will use this most to switch between the pen tool and the cursor. Remember to always click on the cursor before using another program, if you don t, you may annotate files you don t wish to and may not be able to click on things properly! You can add additional shortcuts to the Tools bar by clicking on the cog in the top right-hand side of the screen. This is called the Action bar and it contains some more features you can use in the software including Add a New Page, Delete an Object and the Screen Shade. This is called the Sidebar and it contains the Page Sorter, Gallery, Attachments, Formatting and Add-ons shortcuts. Guy Colnbrook Page 4 of 64
5 Setting page backgrounds (lines, squares and music manuscript) To add handwriting lines or squares for creating a graph to a page, click on the Gallery icon on the Sidebar. Type grid into the search box and press the Search button. Then click on Backgrounds and Themes. Then scroll down until you find the lines or squares you want. Then, either double click on it, or drag it on to the page. For music manuscript, type music into the search bar, don t type manuscript as this bizarrely only shows handwriting backgrounds. 6 Setting default page colour To set a default page colour, go to Edit and then Preferences. Then click on Defaults and then Change Colour. Choose your colour and then press OK. From now on, every new page you create will have this background colour. Guy Colnbrook Page 6 of 64
7 Setting default fonts To save you having to change your font each time you type something, you should set a default font. To do this, click on the A icon in the Tools bar. Choose your font and size. Then click on the A icon on the Sidebar. Once you have done this, scroll down and click on Save Tool Properties at the bottom. Now whenever you type, this will be the font style used. Guy Colnbrook Page 7 of 64
8 Inserting a Maths Symbol (division, fractions, greater than/less than) To add a symbol for A Maths equation, click on the A icon in the Tools bar. Click on the A icon with the down arrow. Then click on this symbol. Double-click on the symbol you want to insert. When you ve finished, press Done. Guy Colnbrook Page 8 of 64
9 Measurement Tools (rulers, protractors and compasses) These tools are found in the Action bar. To use a ruler, click on the Compass and Ruler icon and click on the ruler. Drag the white circle from bottom right to make the ruler bigger. You can also rotate the ruler by clicking, holding and turning from the middle of the ruler. To use a protractor, click on the Compass and Ruler icon and click on the protractor. To make the compass bigger, you do not drag the white circle like the ruler, you drag from the dark purple inside area. By dragging the blue and white circles, you can create any angle you like and by pressing the green arrow afterwards, you can insert this angle into your page. Guy Colnbrook Page 9 of 64
10 To use a compass, click on the Compass and Ruler and click on the compass. Click and drag the arm with the pen in to move the compass. Click and drag on the black tip of the pen to draw a circle, or whatever shape you are trying to create. Guy Colnbrook Page 10 of 64
11 Shape Recognition Pen To use the Shape Recognition Pen, click on pen icon in the Tools bar. Now click on the pen drop-down menu which appears next to the Tools bar. Click on the Shape Recognition Pen. Now every time you draw something, SMART Notebook will convert it into a straight line. Guy Colnbrook Page 11 of 64
12 Magic Pen To use the Magic Pen, click on pen icon in the Tools bar. Now click on the pen drop-down menu which appears next to the Tools bar. Click on the Magic Pen. When you draw a circle with this tool, spotlight mode is launched. You change the size of your spotlight by dragging the blue lines. To exit spotlight mode, click on the white cross. When you draw a square or rectangle with this tool, zoom mode is launched. You change the size of your zoom box by dragging the blue lines. To exit zoom mode, click on the grey cross. 13 Screen Capture Tool This tool enables you to take a screenshot of the whole screen, or just a section of it. To access the Screen Capture Tool, right-click on the blue SMART icon in the bottom right corner of your screen (next to the clock) and select Screen Capture Toolbar from the list. The following box is then displayed. The first icon lets you select a specific part of your screen. The next icon lets you take a screenshot of your entire screen. The third icon lets you take a screenshot of the window you are using, i.e. Word/Google Chrome. And the fourth icon lets you cut out a particular shape. Once you have chosen one of these screenshot tools, click and drag around what you want to take a screenshot of. Guy Colnbrook Page 13 of 64
14 Once you have taken your screenshot, choose either the default option Send to Clipboard. Or Do something else... Guy Colnbrook Page 14 of 64
15 Advanced Shapes Drawing Irregular Polygons Click on Tools and then select Irregular Polygons from the list. Choose one of the styles and then draw your shape. Then click on the screen to select your first point. Click somewhere else to draw a line to the next point. Continue to click points around the page to create the shape. Change the colour of the shape, or the lines, by clicking on the Colour icon and selecting your colours. Once you ve finished, click on the cursor at the top. Guy Colnbrook Page 15 of 64
16 Advanced Shapes Angles and Lengths On any shape, you can display the interior angles or side lengths. To do this, right-click on the shape and select either Show/Hide Interior Angles or Show/Hide Side Lengths. Show/Hide Interior Angles Show/Hide Side Lengths Guy Colnbrook Page 16 of 64
17 Annotating a PDF Right-click on the PDF you want to annotate and click on Open with. Then choose SMART Ink Document Viewer from the list. If this does not appear, click on Choose default program and you will be able to find it here. Once the PDF has opened, click on the cursor on the SMART Ink Selector and then click on the pen tool. Then choose the style of pen you want to use and begin annotating. Remember to always click on the cursor again once you have finished to prevent your computer from behaving strangely. 18 Annotating a Word Document Once you have opened your Word document, tap on the SMART Board. Next, tap on Ink Tools at the top. Then tap Pens and choose a colour. Start writing and erase as necessary. When you have finished, just close Word. Guy Colnbrook Page 18 of 64
19 Hyperlinking Pictures Possible lesson ideas: stimuli for creative writing and descriptive writing. Find the website you want using your web-browser and then right-click on the address bar at the top of the screen and select Copy from the drop-down list. Open SMART Notebook and insert an image. Right-click on the image and select Link from the drop-down list. Right-click in the Address box and paste the website. Select either Corner icon or Object. By selecting Object you can click on any part of the image and it will take you to the website. If you select Corner you will need to click on the globe that appears in the bottom left corner of the picture. Guy Colnbrook Page 19 of 64
20 Infinite Cloner Possible lesson ideas: money (Maths) and parts of speech (English). Right click on the object and select Infinite Cloner. This now makes the object the master. You can drag as many objects as you want from the master. To delete the master, right-click and click on the tick next to Infinite Cloner Then delete the object as normal. Guy Colnbrook Page 20 of 64
21 Gallery Content Dice Possible lesson ideas: number bonds (traditional), stimuli for creative writing (picture) and sentence starters (text). Examples of dice: Text, Picture and Traditional. You click the dice to roll. Search dice in the Gallery search bar from the Sidebar. Click on Interactive and Multimedia and double click, or drag, the dice onto the page. Click on the white cog in the top right corner to change the settings. Click on the theme you want. Guy Colnbrook Page 21 of 64
22 To add text, click on a face of the dice and begin typing. To add pictures, drag them from your web-browser onto the dice and then shrink them by clicking and dragging in the white circle. The picture will then be added to a face of the dice. To change the colour, click on the white box above the word Colour and select your colour. When you ve finished, click on the white cog again. 23 Gallery Content Magnifying Glass Possible lesson ideas: word search (correct spelling), the odd one out (parts of speech), fill in the blanks and check your answer and find the shapes (Maths) Search magnifying in the Gallery search from the Sidebar. Click on Pictures and double click, or drag, the magnifying glass onto the page. Then start typing the words you want to hide. Guy Colnbrook Page 23 of 64
24 Change the colour of the text to what you want the background colour to be and then change the background colour to this colour to by right clicking on the Set Background Fill. Once you have done this, you should be able to drag the magnifying glass around and be able to find the words. If it doesn t work, try right-clicking on the magnifying glass, clicking on Order and then Send to Back. Guy Colnbrook Page 24 of 64

26 Gallery Content Pull Tabs Possible lesson ideas: answers to questions and additional instructions/activities Search pull in the Gallery search bar from the Sidebar. Click on Interactive and Multimedia and double click, or drag, the pull tab onto the page. Enter a title and the body text into the pull tab. Click on the cog to change the colour and a default location on the page for the pull tab. Alternatively, you can drag the pull tab to where you want it to be. Once positioned, press the cog button and the < button to hide the pull tab, To reveal it, click on the > button. Guy Colnbrook Page 26 of 64
27 Concept Maps Possible teaching activities: mindmap of initial ideas at the start of a topic, feature of a recount (English) and parts of a 3D shape (Maths) Click on the puzzle piece at the top of the screen. Click on the concept map icon. Double click on the purple box and enter your central theme. Click on the + button to add an idea. You can add as many ideas as you want. 28 To change the box colour, or the font, click on the box and then change the style from the toolbar. Add-ons Adding YouTube videos Click on the add-ons icon on the Sidebar (the puzzle piece) and click on YouTube. Click Search. Enter what you want to find and then click on the Magnifying Glass icon to search. Guy Colnbrook Page 28 of 64
29 Once you have found the video you want, click on it and click on Add Video. Click on the video to play it, or click on the two outward pointing arrows to make the video play in full-screen mode. By inserting a YouTube video into SMART Notebook, adverts and comments are removed. Guy Colnbrook Page 29 of 64
30 Add-ons SMART Blocks Possible lesson ideas: showing calculations and guessing missing values (Maths) Click on the Add-ons tab. Click on the SMART Blocks. Click and drag one of the blocks onto the page. Click on the black drop-down arrow and select Lock and then Lock in Place. Click on the Pen tool and draw your first number. Then draw a line from the number to the box. The number will then appear in the box. Guy Colnbrook Page 30 of 64

32 Add-ons Activity Builder Possible lesson ideas: Proper Nouns (English), Parts of Speech (English), Animal categories (Science), Prime Numbers (Maths) Insert a shape and label it. Add images or text you want to be used. Click on the shape. Click on the Add-ons tab. Click on Activity Builder. Guy Colnbrook Page 32 of 64
33 Click on Edit. Drag the images or text that you want to be accepted into the Accept these objects: box. Drag the images or text that you want to be rejected into the Reject these objects: box. The images or text which you have said the shape will accept will fade away when dragged onto the shape, and the images or text you have said the shape will reject will bounce back to their original position. 35 Activities Fill in the Blanks Possible teaching activities: adding the correct word/punctuation to a sentence, adding the correct homophone to a sentence, creating compound words (English), synonyms (English) completing number sentences (Maths), Verbs and their translations (French) multiple choice questions (History/Science) Click on the alien icon. You may then have to enter you school address and password. Scroll down and click on Fill in the Blanks. Enter the text you want to have blanks in. Click on Define Blanks Guy Colnbrook Page 35 of 64
36 Then click on the words which you want to be blanks. Then click Next. Choose your theme and then press Finish. 38 Activities Flip Out Possible teaching activities: key vocabulary cards (French), writing numbers in words, angle types (Maths), parts of speech and contractions (English) and who or what is this? (History) Click on the alien icon. You may then have to enter you school address and password. Scroll down and click on Flip Out. Add the text you want on the front of the card in the left-hand column, and the text you want on the reverse of the card in the right-hand column. You can also add images you have saved to your computer by clicking on the grey landscape. Then click Next. Choose your theme and press Finish. Guy Colnbrook Page 38 of 64

40 Activities Game Show Possible lesson ideas: multiple choice quiz Click on the alien icon. You may then have to enter you school address and password. Scroll down and click on Game Show. Select Multiple choice or True/False for your first question. Enter the question and possible answers. Click on the white circle to make it blue to show the correct answer. 42 Activities Label Reveal Possible lesson ideas: labelling organs/parts of flower (Science), parts of a computer (Computing), features of a 3D-shape (Maths) and parts of a mechanism (D.T.) First, save the image you want to add labels to or use an existing image saved on your computer. Make sure you know where the image is saved as you will need to find it later. Click on the alien icon. You may then have to enter you school address and password. Scroll down and click on Label Reveal. Click on Drag an image or browse for one and find your picture. 43 Click anywhere on the picture to add a label. If you want to change the colour or shape of the label, click on Change Style. Once you have finished press Finish. Then add a textbox containing the words you want to be added to the picture. To add a buzzer, name selector, or timer, click on the blue star in the right-hand side of the screen. Possible teaching activities: equivalent fractions, time (analogue and digital times), number bonds (Maths) French vocabulary and English vocabulary (French), definitions (Science), contractions (English). Click on the alien icon. You may then have to enter you school address and password. Scroll down and click on Match em Up!. Enter the pairs you want to be matched, you can add a category name to each side, but I never have. Or, you can add pictures you have saved to your computer by clicking on the blue landscape. Click on the white circle to make it blue to show the correct answer. Once you have written the first question, press Add Question. Choose the type of question from the drop-down list. 51 Activities - Rank Order Possible teaching activities: ordering words in alphabetical order/structuring a story (English), ordering numbers (Maths), ordering planets (Science), phases of the Moon (Science), timeline of events or inventions (History) and sorting how important things are (R.S) Click on the alien icon. You may then have to enter you school address and password. Scroll down until you find Rank Order and then press Add this Activity. Enter the items in the correct order on the left-hand side. On the right, you can choose the labels to appear at the top and bottom of the ranking scale, or you can type your own. Then select either Instantly or When Prompted if you want the computer to check each answer, or select Don t Check for when there is no correct answer, you just want a discussion (R.S). Possible teaching activities: Collecting ideas, suggestions of possible settings for creative writing (English), other words for the operations (Maths), plenaries what has been learnt in today s lesson Click on the alien icon. You may then have to enter you school address and password. Scroll down until you find Shout it Out! and click on it. Choose how you want the girls to respond using either text or images and limit the amount of responses you want the girls to be able to give. You may then have to enter you school address and password. Scroll down until you find Super Sort and then click on it. 64 Activities Using Personal Devices All SMART Lab activities, except Game Show, now support tablets, phones, computers and other personal devices. This means that multiple pupils can take part in an activity simultaneously using their own device. To allow pupils to participate in a SMART Lab activity, display the activity on your screen and click on the red tablet on the right-hand side. If you have not already signed in with school address and password, you will need to do this now. A code will then be displayed. If the code is not displayed, press this icon: Direct your pupils to the website: hellosmart.com, or the free Class Lab app. Your pupils should then enter the code displayed. Their names will then appear on your screen. When you are ready to begin, press Start. When you have finished, press End. Guy Colnbrook Page 64 of 64
