1 Maths Homework Booklet Term 1 Each week every student will be set piece of homework. This will be set on the first lesson of the week and due in on the last lesson of the week. Should students want to push themselves further, they can choose a task from the list below. Typing the task title into ActiveLearn, Mathswatch or Hegarty Maths will bring up a set of questions and videos to support students in their learning. For any student wanting to brush up on their times tables, we have Times Table Rock Stars- your teacher will set a task on this every week as an extra piece of homework! Year 7 w/c 13/11/17 w/c 20/11/17 w/c 27/11/17 Collecting Like Terms Collect up to 5 terms that are different. These can include powers and fractional values. Use Function Machines Use one and two step function machines. Use and output and work backwards to find what an input could be. Multiplying Terms Multiply terms together. The coefficients can be negative and fractional, but take care with these! Collect Like Terms Collect up to 4 terms that are different. These can include powers. Factorising to Find Roots Factorise into single brackets. Ensure you are taking out the HCF each time. This may be algebraic in some cases. Substitute into Basic Expressions Substitute negative and decimal values into expressions. Can you think how this links into function machines?
2 Laws of Arithmetic Investigate laws of arithmetic. Can you use key words such as commutative? w/c 04/12/17 w/c 11/12/17 w/c 18/12/17 Read and Plot X,Y Coordinates Plot coordinates in all 4 quadrants. Join this up to make a pattern. Can you read negative coordinate? Order of Operations (Advanced) Complete tasks on order of operations that require several steps. Use powers both inside and outside of the brackets to investigate how results change. Generate Coordinates Use substitution tables to generate coordinates. Students should also recognise what graphs like y =2 and x = -1 look like. Substitution Substitute negative, decimal and fractional values into expressions. Can you spot any patterns? Plot Linear Graphs Generate coordinates using an x y table. Plot these onto a graph. What happens if you continue the line? How far does it go? Year 8 w/c 13/11/17 Plans and Elevations Draw the plan, side and front views of shapes. To stretch yourself, draw these as 3D solids on isometric paper (ask your teacher for a sheet of this). 2D Shapes Recognise 2D shapes. Name properties and understand symmetries (rotational and reflectional) of these shapes.

Surface Area of Solids Sketch the net of solids. Use this to create a formula for the surface area of these solids. Apply it to different versions of them. Surface Area of Prisms Find the surface area of regular prisms. Find the surface area of compound solids by applying this same formula. Nets of Solids Recognise a solid from the net. Name the number of vertices, sides and edges and how they fit together. Area/Circumference of Circles Find the area of a circle using the formula. Find the link between radius and diameter and use this to find the circumference. Experimental Probability Investigate probability from a game (video provided). Use this to find the experimental probability. Define restrictions. Pythagoras Understand where Pythagoras Theorem comes from. Apply this to find the shorter and longer side in a triangle. Bar Charts Construct a bar chart from a data set. Interpret data and draw on common these, whilst working out the averages and range. Distance Between Coordinates Use Pythagoras to work out the distance between two points. Draw this on a graph to prove how it works.
4 Interpret Pie Charts Use comparative pie charts to describe and compare the distribution of data. Year 9 w/c 04/12/17 w/c 27/11/17 w/c 20/11/17 w/c 13/11/17 Find Reciprocals Find reciprocals of numbers. These may also be negative. Investigate where they can be used in maths. Add/Subtract Decimals Use the column method to add and subtract decimals. For a challenge, can you convert them to fractions? Powers (including Fractional) Add/subtract/multiply/divide powers. Ensure that some are negative and some are fractional. What happens with a negative power? Laws of Indices Use basis laws of indices. Try some multi-step problems to stretch yourself even further. Write in Standard Form Convert a number from standard form to an ordinary number. Go back the other way. HCF and LCM Find the LCM and HCF of up to four numbers. Try using different method to find the most efficient way. Order Numbers in Standard Form Convert numbers into/from standard form. Once you ve done this, order numbers from smallest to largest. Prime Factor Decomposition Use a Venn diagram to find prime factors of values. Can you use any divisibility rules?
5 w/c 11/12/17 w/c 18/12/17 Simplify Surds Simplify surds by finding multipliers for them. Can you add/subtract them? What happens when you multiply? Order of Operations Use BIDMAS to solve order of operations questions. Does it always matter which order you complete tasks? Generate a Quadratic Sequence Use the nth term rule to generate a quadratic sequence. Can you do the same with a fractional coefficient of n squared? Multiplying Terms Understand how to efficient write examples such as y x 4, or 2a x 9. Try dividing as a further extension. Year 10 w/c 13/11/17 w/c 20/11/17 Using Fractions Simplify, multiply, divide, add, and subtract fractions. This can be done with improper and mixed number fractions too. Frequency Tables Interpret frequency tables. Use this information to put into different charts, e.g. bar charts, pictograms. Writing/Sharing into Ratios Write a ratio from a worded problem. Include fractions to ratios in this. Share into a ratio with 3 parts or more. Two Way Tables Form two way tables from written information. Find probabilities from this.

Search for geometry clips for support with this. Representing Data Tasks Collate information from tables and place into different charts. Pie charts, bar charts and pictograms could be included. Right Angled Triangle Trigonometry Use basic trigonometry. This can be revised using SOHCAHTOA or the formulae triangles. To push yourself, use multi-step questions. Time Series Graphs Draw a time series graph from a set of data. Analyse this and write comparisons from different data sets. The Sine Rule Use the Sine rule for non-right angled triangles. Try multi-step questions and find both angle and side lengths. Pie Charts Construct pie charts. Compare different pie charts, including measuring angles in the diagram. The Cosine Rule Use the Cosine rule for non-right angled triangles. Try multi-step questions and find both angle and side lengths. Scatter Graphs (including line of best fit) Draw scatter graph. Ensure that the axes are labelled correctly. Draw a line of best fit and interpolate information. Year 11

Two Way and Frequency Tables Find probabilities from two way tables. Construct a range of frequency tables. Evaluate frequency tables. Pythagoras and Trigonometry Find lengths and angles using trigonometry. Find hypotenuse and shorter sides using Pythagoras. Build this and look at 3D Pythagoras and Trigonometry. Bar Charts/Pie Charts/Discrete Data Charts Intepret the above charts. Convert from one to another. Explain what each type of data is and when it is used. The Sine/Cosine Rule Remember and use the Sine and Cosine rules. Use them to find both angles and side lengths. Develop this into looking at 3D shape and solids. Representing Data Tasks Represent data using tally charts, frequency tables, bar charts and pictograms. Gradients of Linear Graphs Find the gradients of linear lines. Use this to find parallel and perpendicular lines. Apply this to circle graphs if confident. Time Series Graphs/Scatter Graphs Draw and interpret time series graphs. Complete similar tasks with scatter graphs. Interpret the line of best fit. Circle Graphs (including tangents) Find the equations of tangents. Understand the equations of circle graphs. Solving Linear Equations Solve linear equations that have unknowns on both sides. These should include negative, decimal and fractional values.
8 w/c 18/12/17 Graphing Rates of Change/Line Segments Plot graphs that show rates of change. Develop this and show how line segment lengths and be found. Solving Linear Inequalities Solve linear inequalities with unknowns on both sides. These should include negative, decimal and fractional values.
