POWERFUL APPLICATIONS USING PYTHON IN ENSIGHT Aric Meyer CEI Japan Users Meeting
Outline 1. Overview of Python and EnSight 2. Detailed Introduction to 2 Tools 3. Quick Introduction to 6 Tools Notes This is not training or instructions for how to use these tools. It is a quick introduction to what can be done with these tools.
Section 1 Overview of Python and EnSight
Programming language Free Open-source Cross-platform High-level Easy to learn and use, yet powerful Official site: List of Japanese resources: wiki.python.org/moin/japaneselanguage
Python and EnSight Included with EnSight Installed automatically Integrated Versions EnSight 9 uses Python v2.51 EnSight 10 uses Python v2.71 Python 2.71 is backwards compatible
Python and EnSight How to use python within EnSight Scripts interactively or in batch User-Defined Tools Assign to a keyboard macro Generate python code just by using EnSight File->Command: Commands generated here can be easily converted to python
Python Exchange Free and open source resource for EnSight python scripts and user-defined tools 46 posts and growing Main contributors (so far): kevin Kevin Colburn, Sales Manager, CEI Houston, USA david David Loerinici Support Engineer, CEI Germany aric Aric Meyer Marketing Director, CEI Shanghai bill Bill Dunn Senior Developer, CEI, Apex, USA Customers are welcome to contribute their scripts!
Section 2 Detailed Introduction to 2 Tools Streamline Analyzer Spatial Probability Density Function
Streamline analyzer EnSight 9.2, 10.0 Allows detailed analysis of particle traces in EnSight Works with transient and steady-state data Works with streamlines and pathlines Not available on pythonexchange.com Contact local support to obtain the script
Part locations in EnSight On the EnSight Server On the EnSight Client Particle traces are stored on the EnSight server, so some operations cannot be performed on them.
Streamline Analyzer Script Moves particle traces to the server for analysis Steps to use the streamline analyzer: 1. Create the particle traces as normal. 2. Run the streamline analyzer script. 3. A new case will load automatically. This transient case has 2 parts (Trace_Points, Trace_Line) and several variables. 4. Use EnSight s full range of features to analyze the particle traces.
After the Script: Server Particle Traces These variables are created for all of the traces Per Element Trace Number Final Velocity Final Distance Final Time Distance Normalized Scalar Value Max Scalar Value Per Node Velocity Distance Time Ones Scalar Value Per element variables are useful for culling the traces using EnSight s failed element capability (filtering) Final variables are useful for seeing the end at the beginning Nodal values are useful for seeing the variable value s change spatially and temporally Trace number is a useful aid in following a trace from beginning to end pones is useful for counting points or clip intersections Several examples are given in the following slides.
Example problem 1 Where to release traces so they flow farther or longer? Method 1 Color the Trace_Line part by pfinal_time or pfinal_distance. Since all elements of each trace have the same value of the pfinal variables, each trace has only one color.
Example problem 1 Where to release traces so they flow farther or longer? Method 2 Use the variables pfinal_time or pfinal_distance to filter elements that have a final time or distance below a certain threshold. This completely removes the shorter traces. In EnSight 9 and earlier this feature is called failed elements.
Example problem 1 Where to release traces so they flow farther or longer? Method 3 Show the starting points as spheres and color them by pfinal_time or pfinal_distance.
Example problem 2 What is the average particle velocity versus time? Steps 1. Select the Case 2 Trace_Points part 2. Calculate the average velocity 1. pv_mag = RMS(pVelocity) - computes a scalar variable of the velocity magnitude 2. pavgvelocity = StatMoment(plist,pV_mag,1) - calculates the average (mean) velocity magnitude of the traces 3. Plot pavgvelocity over time Could also plot Max and Min
Example problem 3 Count the number of particles near the center over time Steps 1. Use the cylinder tool to do an Inside clip of the Trace_Points part. 2. Select the clip part 3. Calculate the number of existing traces: NumTraces = StatMoment(pOnes,0) 4. Plot NumTraces vs Time
Example problem 4 (advanced) Find the max temperature at any point along a given direction Steps 1. Create a vector in the desired direction - Use the MakeVect calculator function (use MakeScalNode first) 2. Use the new vector to create streamlines 3. Run the Streamline Analyzer script (select to export nodal temperature) 4. Color the Trace_Points part with ptemperature_max The result can be compared to data from a thermal imaging camera.
Streamline Analyzer Script (review) Moves particle traces to the server for analysis Basic Steps 1. Create particle traces 2. Run the streamline analyzer script 3. Analyze the particle traces What the script does 1. Creates a new case with: 2. Two new parts 3. Several new variables Now learn about some other useful tools!
Spatial Probability Density Function Also called Volumetric Histogram EnSight 9.2, 10.0 Function: Creates a volume-weighted histogram of a variable Displays it in a standard EnSight plot Steady-state and transient This tool is different from the histogram in the EnSight palette editor (advanced tab). The palette histogram is not volume-weighted (it counts all elements or nodes equally) and cannot be displayed in the graphics window. Download the latest tool and documentation:
For Steady-State Data Usage: 1. Select part(s) and run the tool 2. Choose GUI options and click OK 3. Adjust the plot scale and appearance as needed Tips: Only works with scalar variables. If you want to use a vector, first create a scalar variable of the vector magnitude. You can use the tool on 3D parts (volume-weighted) or 2D parts (areaweighted). WARNING: Do not select both 3D and 2D parts at the same time or the calculated values will be meaningless.

For Transient Data Usage: Detects transient data and offers an additional option: Export Transient data as Case Gold? If you do not choose this option then the usage is identical to steady-state data, using the current time step If you choose this option, the tool will create and load a new case for the query results The transient plot will show the distribution for the current time step, and will automatically update when you change time steps
Section 3 Quick Introduction to 6 Tools Color by Element Type Create Plane Part Asian Font Assistant Pipe Centerline Routine Creating Mirror Images of Parts Plot Probe Values on a Graph
Color by Element Type Each element is colored according to its mesh type EnSight 10.0 Uses: Examining the mesh Method: Uses the EleMetric calculator function to calculate a scalar value for each element Performs several steps to color the elements and create text annotations showing which color indicates which element type Download the latest tool and documentation:
Create Plane Part Creates new part at the location of the plane tool EnSight 10.0 Uses: Creating a floor, wall, or other surface for a texture map Showing simple geometry which is not included in the CAE results file Method: Uses point parts to create nodes Meshes the nodes into two triangles Possible Enhancements: Create other geometric shapes Use other methods to specify the geometry, such as the other tools Automatically apply a texture Download the latest tool and documentation:
Asian Font Assistant Displays the available fonts for a given language EnSight 9.2, 10.0 Uses: See all the available fonts for your language and how those fonts look in EnSight. Method: Finds all the installed fonts, and identifies which fonts support the given language Creates one text annotation for each font to show the font s name and a sample of how the font looks Tips: Run the tool a second time to delete all the annotations Download the latest tool and documentation:
Pipe Centerline Routine Creates a spline along the center of a tube-like object EnSight 9.2, 10.0 Uses: Query and plot values along the center of a pipe Place and move a clip plane tangent to a pipe Move a camera along the center of a tube Tips: Handles twists, turns, and changing diameter Cannot handle splits and intersections like a Y-shape To use as a user-defined tool, first delete line 693 of the script Download the latest script/tool and documentation: Video 2
Creating Mirror Images of Parts Creates a copy of parts flipped about any origin EnSight 9.2, 10.0 Uses: Create a mirror-like reflection effect Reflect a symmetric model about a plane that is not an X, Y, or Z = 0 plane Method: Copies all the selected parts Mirrors the copied parts and hides the original copy Uses frame mode to move the mirrored parts so that they are reflected about a plane at any location (Optional) Creates a plane part and makes it semi-transparent to make the effect of a mirror Download the latest tool and documentation:
Plot Probe Values on a Graph Creates a query and a plot from multiple query probes EnSight 9.2, 10.0 Uses: Plot variable values from arbitrary locations on an X-Y plot Export all the probe values as a single query Tips: The script creates 4 queries and shows one of them on the plot. Show the other queries to plot the values by their X, Y, or Z locations. Download the latest script and documentation:
Enjoy exploring the additional power of EnSight with python!
