INSTALLATION, WIRING & CONFIGURATION REVISION 1 FORM # Walker Wireless Setup Guide BUILDING INTELLIGENCE WORLDWIDE
1 About the Walker Wireless System The Walker Wireless System uses the wireless ZigBee mesh network protocol for communication. ZigBee is a communication protocol based on the IEEE PHY/MAC to provide reliable data transfer in noisy, interference-rich environments. ZigBee layers on top of with Mesh Networking, Security, and Applications control. The ZigBee mesh network allows for large wireless networks to be created over vast areas. The radios installed in all Walker Wireless products allow for up to 30 meters (unobstructed) between devices. In testing, the radios freely communicate 20 meters between radios on the same floor and 6 meters (2 floors) vertically in a concrete/steel building. Because ZigBee is a mesh network, every device is connected to all surrounding devices wirelessly (Figure 1). When data is transmitted the ZigBee mesh network will find the best route for the data to travel (Figure 2). If for any reason preferred route becomes unavailable (E.g. device is not powdered, strong interference, etc ) the ZigBee mesh network will find a new route for the data by relaying it through other pathways. (Figure 3). ZigBee Mesh Network Data Transfer Figure 1 Unavailable Route Figure 2 Legend Figure 3
2 ZigBee Mesh Network A ZigBee mesh network contains only 3 types of devices as described below. Coordinator A coordinator forms the network as devices are added and sets the communication channel and Operational PAN ID. There is only one coordinator per network. With coordinator firmware programmed into its wireless module (radio), a Zcoord always acts as the coordinator in a Walker Wireless system. Routers Routers expand the range of the ZigBee mesh network by creating a stepping stone to relay data between two devices that are out of range from each other, e.g. the more routers the more area can be covered. Routers are constantly powered and are able to send and receive data themselves as well as pass data to and from other devices. Every Walker Wireless product except the Battery-SENSOR acts as a router, including any Zcoord in the system other then the one setup as a coordinator. End Devices End Devices transmit their data and then hibernate for a set amount of time. Because End Devices hibernate, they are unable to pass data to and from other devices and therefore unable to expand the range of the ZigBee mesh network. The Battery-SENSOR is the only End Device Walker Wireless offers. The Battery-SENSOR can communicate to a Zcoord or directly to another thermostat. Walker Wireless devices are setup in a way similar to Walker I/O Bus. Every device gets an address plus a SAC address because when data is transmitted by a SAC it is broadcasted to all devices. The SAC address and device address lets every device know when to accept data. When a device transmits data to a SAC, it must be programmed with the MAC address of the Zcoord that is connected to the same SAC as the set SAC address. The location of each device in the building does not matter as long as the device is in the ZigBee mesh network. Typically when installing the Walker Wireless system all SACs and Zcoords will be installed in a mechanical room centrally located in the network (See Figure 4 on next page).
3 Walker Wireless System Figure 4 System Scope Currently the Walker Wireless System can have 20 devices (Address 3-22) per SAC/Zcoord pair and up to 300 devices per network. If more devices are needed 2 or more networks can be made with each network having 300 devices each, Allowing the system to control thousands of zones simultaneously. Data will not be transmitted wirelessly between 300 device networks, data transferred between these networks must be done by Walker Smart-LAN Highway.
4 Software Configuration Each Walker Wireless device has the identical settings to set for a network. Some settings are programmed to the radio and some are to read from the radio. The below objects are adjustable when programming the device using Easy-TOOL or can be changed through the 3-pin communication port. To write the changes to the radio when changing them through the 3-pin, press Q on the keyboard in HyperTerminal. DEST_HI: The top 32 bits or 8 hex characters of the MAC address where the data will be sent to. The device destination MAC address is usually set to the MicroSAC-31 s Zcoord that it will communicate through. If using a Battery- SENSOR the address can be another device. This can not be set in a Zcoord. DEST_LW: The bottom 32 bits or 8 hex characters of the MAC address where the data will be sent to. The device destination MAC address is usually set to the MicroSAC-31 s Zcoord that it will communicate through. If using a Battery-SENSOR the address can be another device. This can not be set in a Zcoord. SET_PAN The PAN ID is the name of the network and can be up to 16 Hex characters long. The PAN ID must be set the same in each device to join/form the network. If the PAN ID is set to 0x0 then it will join any network in range. ST_ATSC Set the channels to scan. Each bit of the 2 bytes represents a channel to scan. The radio will only scan channels that are selected. If the desired network is on a channel not scanned the radio will not join. Channel Bit Channel Bit Channel Bit B C D E A 15 F I.E. to scan all channels set to FFFF. To on scan 1A set to SAC_ADR or MY_SAC_ This must be set to the address of the supervising SAC (only the last number, e.g. for PA0106 set to 6). If wrong the device will not accept commands. TIMESAC Set to the address of the SAC with the Zcoord transmitting the time. If wrong the device will not accept the time.
5 ADDRESS Set to the address of the device (3-22). Just like Walker I/O Bus all incoming data will be sent to the IPs, OPs, VAs, VCs and VFs of the devices address multiplied by 10. Example: If the device address is 9 and the setpoint is mapped to VA4, the data will be stored in VA94 in the SAC. EC_TIME_KEEPER (Zcoord only) Set to 1 if the Zcoord will transmit the time. Only 1 Zcoord should transmit the time per network. Set to 0 to disable. This is only adjustable when using Easy-TOOL. EC_DEST_MAC_ADDRESS 1-8 (Battery-SENSOR only) The Battery-SENSOR does not have the objects DEST_HI and DEST_LW. Instead there is EC_DEST_MAC_ADDRES 1 to 8. 1 stores the top byte (2 hex characters) of the MAC address, 2 stores the next byte and so on untill the last byte is stored in to 8. The below objects are read from the radio and can not be changed. To read the settings from the radio press W on the keyboard. MY PAN: The read back PAN ID from the radio. Should be the same as SET_PAN. CHANNEL The channel the radio is talking on as read from the radio. Sometimes if the radio is using channel 1A it will display as channel E, this does not affect communication in any way. Each device has the below display when using the 3-pin. It can be updated by pressing W on the keyboard. Me The MAC address of the radio in the device. DN The MAC address of the destination on the data (Usually Zcoord). A Zcoord will display FF FF (Broadcast to all devices). Ch The channel the radio is communicating on. PAN The PAN ID the radio is using. OI The Operational PAN ID the radio has. This is set by the coordinator in the system. PIN Currently not used. Vr The version of firmware in the radio. Note: When power is reset to the device it will automatically do a write/read to the radio during start up.
6 Programming a Battery-SENSOR Because a Battery-SENSOR goes to hibernates, the 3-pin commands do not work to read/write from the radio. Use Walker Technologies Easy-TOOL software to adjust the settings on the Battery-SENSOR to match the ZigBee mesh network setting. Then, set EC_DIAGS to 1 to not let the Battery-SENSOR hibernate. Using the 3-pin, press Q to write the settings to the radio. Press W to read the radio to check the settings when done. To finish, reprogram the Battery-SENSOR to set EC_DIAGS to 0 to allow the Battery-SENSOR to hibernate. Programming the Battery-SENSOR to Send Data to Another Device To program a Battery-SENSOR to send its data directly to device other than a Zcoord set EC_DEST_MAC_ADDRES 1 through 8 to the MAC address of the radio in the other device, set the EC_SAC_ADDRESS to 0 and the ADDRESS to 2. In each device there are objects relating to the Battery-SENSOR MYSENSR Set to the address of the Battery-SENSOR (Address 2). USD_SNS Chose the way to use the Battery-SENSOR data. TMP1 Do not use the Battery-SENSOR data (default). SNSR Use the Setpoint, Temperature and motion from the Battery-SENSOR. AVRG Use the Setpoint and motion of the device but avarge the Temperature of the device and the Battery-SENSOR. SENSTMP The read temperature of the Battery-SENSOR. ST_SENS The read Setpoint of the Battery-SENSOR. SS_BATT The read battery voltage of the Battery-SENSOR. SS_TMOT How much time is left on the no motion timer in the Battery-SENSOR set in EC_MOTION_SETBACK_TIME of the Battery-SENSOR. SS_CNTS Counts up with every packet sent by the Battery-SENSOR. Used to check if the Battery-SENSOR is still transmitting data.
