STIAssessment Pre-Slugging STIAssessment Pre-slugging allows users to pre-mark student identification numbers and other information on STI supported forms. Any available application updates are automatically installed whenever the user starts the application. This ensures that the user always has the most current version of the application without having to manually install it. Important Note about Microsoft.NET Framework Users of both the Pre-Slugging and Scanning applications must have Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 or later installed. To check your version, open the Control Panel on your computer and select Add or Remove Programs. Scroll down the list of programs to view the Microsoft applications installed. If Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 (Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is also acceptable) is not listed, go to and download the installation file. Follow the instructions provided to complete the installation. Downloading the Application for Install To download the scanning solution, go to and click the Scanning Tools link. STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 1
Save the file to your computer. Unzip the folder. Open the folder. Unzip the STIAssessment Pre-Slugging.zip file and follow the directions that appear onscreen (as described in the following section). Installation Procedure Setup Step 1 This is the Welcome screen of the setup application. It s very important to note that the client must have the Microsoft.NET Framework version 3.5 and/or its updates installed STIAssessment Scanning is installed (see Important Note about Microsoft.NET Framework on page 1 for details). The application will not successfully run otherwise. Click Next to continue. STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 2
Setup Step 2 Next, select the directory in which STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Solution will be deployed. It defaults to the user s Program Files directory; in nearly all cases, this default should be used. Click Next. STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 3
Setup Step 3 A confirmation page to begin the installation will appear. Click Next. Setup Step 4 In this step, the Pre-Slugging Solution s components are installed to the user s hard drive. STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 4
When the process has completed, click Close. The installation is now finished. Launching the Pre-Slugging Application A shortcut to launch the application will be placed on your Desktop: The application may also be launched via the Windows Start button Programs or All Programs STIAssessment STIAssessment Pre-Slug. STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 5
Automatic Application Updates Once the program is launched, it checks for and installs any updates. Supported Forms A drop-down menu allows the user to select the forms to be pre-slugged. The supported forms are as follows: CP24_0728: 4-choice, 30 item form CP24_0769: 4-choice, 80 item form CP25_0587: 5-choice, 30 item form CP26_0584: 5-choice, 80 item form Note: If you have any leftover CP25_0586 forms, you may still use them select form CP26_0584 on the menu. STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 6
Non-Printer-Specific Pre-Slugging Prior to v4.2, users would select a printer before proceeding to print a form. Options included STIsupported printers or non-supported printers. Users may now add and tweak their own printer settings, which allows any operational printer (provided it is supported by the local computer and its operating system) to be used for printing forms with this application. STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 7
Login: District Administrator. Most of the time, pre-slugging is done by the district administrator (DA) at the district office. The following screenshot shows the DA login window. STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 8
Class-Level Slugging Option Forms may be pre-slugged for selected classes as well as for the entire district, as shown in the following screenshot. The drop-down test menu will list all the district assessments that have been published, along with any tests created by the selected teacher (in this case, Monica Spain). Only district administrators have the ability to perform class-level or district-level pre-slugging. For school administrators (SA s) and teachers, the radio buttons for these options will not be visible. STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 9
District Level Slugging At the district level, pre-slugging can be done for pre-defined mappings, which may correspond to certain grades (for example, all the fourth-graders in a particular district s elementary schools) or other custom arrays (for example, all the seventh-graders in middle schools, but not in junior-high schools, or all the students in Gifted programs). Only those mappings that have been checked off for Scanning in STIAssessment will appear in the Select Mapping list. STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 10
Teacher Login and Test Selection The following screenshots shows the login window and test-selection screen for a teacher or school administrator (SA). STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 11
A teacher is able to pre-slug only those students who belong to his or her classes; the school and teacher pull-downs will show only his or her school and name. A school administrator has the ability to obtain a list of teachers for his or her school and pre-slug students belonging to different teachers classes. STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 12
Test-Sorting Options There are two ways of sorting tests: by Test Name or by Date Created. Based on the selected option, tests are sorted in the ascending order. STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 13
Student ID to Print Users have the option to select which type of student ID to use on forms. Choices include: Student Number (unique student ID imported from InformationNOW or STIOffice) Student State ID Alternative Student Number STI-Assigned ID (unique student ID generated in STIAssessment) Note: For teacher logins, the options available here may differ. STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 14
Printing Once all the settings have been selected, the user clicks the Print Now button. A confirming popup appears. Note: When switching between forms, make sure to restart the application and the printer in order to reset any form-specific settings. From this form, the user may verify the form selected on the previous screen and also pick from a list of printers using the Printer Setting drop-list. The list will contain any supported STI printers and also any printers that the user has added (via Custom Settings). STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 15
Check the Include Unsupported STI Printers checkbox to include any unsupported STI printers in the list. Click the Configure button to set a default setting. Whichever printer is set as the default will be the printer auto-selected in this list in the future. Thus, if the user always uses the same printer set as the default, the only thing necessary to do on this screen is click OK at the bottom. More information on configuring is available in the section Printer Configuration Form on the following page. The options Print Test Page and Configure remain available in case the user needs to add a new printer or tweak pre-slugging to correct printing. STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 16
Printer Configuration Form This form may be accessed either by clicking the Configure Printer button on the primary setup screen or by clicking the Configure button from the Confirm Pre-Slug Settings screen. STI Settings This tab deals specifically with any printer settings that have been added by STI. Here users will find a list of all STI Supported printer settings. Users have the option to set one of the printers as the default printer settings or to copy STI settings for a printer; these settings may then be tweaked to suit the user s needs. Select Brand This drop-list will contain a list of all available printer brands for which STI has settings. Selecting a brand from a list will show all available printers in the Select Printer list. An example of a brand would be HP. Select Printer This list will contain any STI printers stored in the database for the selected brand that is chosen. Included Unsupported Printers In the event that a printer becomes outdated and obsolete, STI will flag the printer as no longer supported. If this box is checked, it will include all STI printers in the list. If unchecked, only printers marked as supported will display in the list. Selected Form This displays the selected form. It will default to whatever the user has chosen on the primary setup screen. It is important to note that printer settings are formspecific and that the settings for a printer are different for each form. In turn, configuration of a printer setting will be set for a specific form and may be modified per form. STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 17
Copy STI Setting This option gives the user the ability to make an exact copy of an STI setting. Making a copy will move the setting to the user s custom settings where the user may then modify that setting as needed. Summary of Setting This area gives the user a summary of all the positioning for the selected printer setting and form. This area primarily for informational purposes. Copy Allows user to make a copy of an STI setting and moves it to the custom setting area. When the Copy STI Setting box is checked, this area will display. The textbox will default to the same name as the STI printer setting with the wording - STI Custom appended. The user may change the name in the textbox as desired. Clicking Copy will place a copy of the setting under the user s Custom Settings tab and there the user may modify the setting as necessary. Note that this setting is now a custom setting and is accessible through Custom Settings with the user-defined changes. Custom Settings This feature provides a way for users to add their own settings for any printer to be used for preslugging. The Pre-Slug application uses specific positions to know where to print pre-slug images (i.e., block on student numbers); see below for more information on these positions Also under the Custom Settings tab, users may manage any settings they have created. NOTE: The settings created by a user are stored on the user s local machine only, in a configuration file that will be saved in the same directory in which the STI Pre-Slug application is installed. STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 18
The Custom Settings area is where users will go to add their own printers. Also, any STI settings the user has copied will be managed here as well. Settings Here users store the printer settings and may customize and create any settings that are stored in the configuration file on their machines. Saved Setting Allows the user to manage any saved settings that have been previously created. Through this option, the user may rename a setting, delete a setting, set it as the default, or tweak any of the positions for the setting. New Setting This allows the user to create a brand new setting or add a new printer. All of the Positioning will default to values that are relatively close to any printer. The user will simply need to print a test page and then modify the positions accordingly to fit the printer. Once a setting has been added, it is accessible under Saved Settings. Copy Setting Allows users to make a copy of a saved setting and creates a new setting. Users may then modify the setting as desired without affecting the original. Delete Setting Link button that allows the user to permanently delete a selected saved setting from their list. Positioning Positioning is used to define and tweak the locations where images print on scan sheets. o Student Number Allows the user to modify/adjust positioning for pre-slug that pertains to student number on the scan form. o Test Information Allows user to modify/adjust positioning for pre-slug that pertains to test information on a scan form. This is the Name, Test, Date and Period information that displays on the scan form. o Constructed Response Allows user to modify/adjust the positioning for pre-slug that pertains to constructed response items on the scan form. Summary of Setting This area gives the user a summary of all the positioning for the selected printer setting and form. Print Test Page This button is provided so the user may see exactly how the form will print, given the current settings selected. This option will print only one page, so that paper is not wasted, with scrambled data (i.e., Name: STI Student, Stu Number: ). The user may choose to print the test page on an actual scan form or on plain paper to compare to the scan form. Save/Cancel Save will save any current work the user has performed. Cancel will close the screen, canceling any current changes that have been made. Understanding Scan Measurements This section offers instructions on how to measure and position a scan form. All existing printers that have been set up in the Pre-Slug application followed this logic in order for those printers to be able to work with STIA Pre-Slug application. Measurements Areas on Scan Form There are three areas on a scan form that are affected by preslugging. These are depicted in Figure 1: Areas on Scan Form. This corresponds to the three radio buttons found under the Custom Settings tab in the Positioning section. o Test Information This area pertains to the Student Name, Test Name, Date and Period that are printed on the scan form. o Student Number This area pertains to the student number that is pre-slugged on the scan form. STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 19
o Constructed Response This area pertains to the block that is printed on top of questions that are Constructed Response questions on a test. This prevents students from entering answers for questions that require a written response. How to measure positions This is depicted in Figure 2: How to measure positions. o Position Values IMPORTANT: The values shown on the Custom Settings screen in the Positioning area are values that are meaningful to the printer when the scan forms are pre-slugged. However, it must be understood when measuring how to convert your measurements to these values. These values you see on the screen (i.e., 400) are the equivalent of 1/100 th of an inch, or 1 inch = 100. So for example, if you are trying to measure a top position with a ruler and you get 3 inches, the top value entered should be 300. These values must be converted to the value expected by the interface/printer. o o o o o o o Top Positions To measure any Top Position, place a ruler at the top of the scan form and measure down to the top of an area where printing should start. The example shown in Figure 3: Student Number Positioning shows how to measure the top position for student number. Left Positions To measure any Left Position, place a ruler on the scan form and measure from the left side of the paper over to where the printing should start. The example shown in Figure 3: Student Number Positioning shows how to measure the left position for student number. Row Spacing (Student Number) To measure Row Spacing for the student number, measure from the center of the bubble in one row to the center of the bubble in the next row. The example shown in Figure 3: Student Number Positioning shows how to measure the row spacing for student number. Column Spacing (Student Number) To measure Column Spacing for the student number, measure from the center of the bubble in one column to the center of the bubble in the next column. The example shown in Figure 3: Student Number Positioning shows how to measure the column spacing for student number. Row Spacing (Constructed Response) To measure Row Spacing for constructed response area, measure the center of the first bubble in question 1 to the center of the first bubble in question 2. The example shown in Figure 5: Constructed Response Block Positioning demonstrates this. Column Spacing (Constructed Response) To measure Column Spacing for constructed response area, measure the center of the first bubble for question 1 to the center of the first bubble in the first question in the next column over. The example shown in Figure 5: Constructed Response Block Positioning demonstrates this. Other Examples The following sections feature screenshots showing how to measure for each section. Again, a ruler or other measuring device may be used, but the values will have to be converted as noted above. The screenshot shown in Figure 6: Example of using new interface gives an example of how to troubleshoot an off-centered student number. All areas follow this same logic. 26 Custom Settings The custom settings discussed above allow users to create their own settings. Users will be able to configure settings for any printer and the settings may be saved to a local machine. This option would allow a District Tech Coordinator, for example, to set these settings without having to ever actually Pre- Slug. A settings file will be created and stored on the user s local machine. Users may share these files with others if desired. The settings file is generic and may be used on any machine. However, note that the settings will only be accessible on the machine on which the Pre-Slug application is installed. The user settings file may be found in the same directory in which the STIA Pre-Slug application is installed. Below is a screenshot of what is contained in this file. The file must reside in this directory in order for the application to identify the custom settings that have been created. It should be noted that it is not recommended that users manually change this file as it could cause issues in the Pre-Slug application. Users should always allow the application itself to create and modify this file. STI_ STIAssessment Pre-Slugging Forms Page 24
