1 Lesson 6 Designing a Chair This lesson illustrates how to design a chair using the Curves Network modeling tool. The following modeling tools will be covered: Curves Network. Skin. Intersect. Trim. Mirror. Learning solidthinking 1

2 Lesson 6 Let s begin by drawing the basic curves. Drawing a network of curves 1) If you are already working with solidthinking, from the File menu, select New and Save the scene you were working on. Otherwise, you must first run solidthinking. 2) Choose the default layout option from the Layouts panel (choose View 4 Layouts). 2 Learning solidthinking

3 3) Select the NURBS curve icon and create a curve in the Front view for the front profile of the chair. Insert the points listed below and use the image below as reference guide. Press the Spacebar to end. Point coordinates: #1(-5, 0, 0); #2(-5, 0, 5); #3(-7, 0, 9); #4(-8, 0, 9). 4) Select the NURBS curve icon and create a second curve in the Front view for the front profile of the chair. Insert the points listed below and use the following image as reference guide. Press the Spacebar to end. Learning solidthinking 3

4 Lesson 6 Point coordinates: #1(5, 0, 0); #2(5, 0, 5); #3(7, 0, 9); #4(8, 0, 9). 5) Select the NURBS curve icon and create a curve in the Top view for the upper profile of the chair. Place your points according to the values given below and press the Spacebar to end. 4 Learning solidthinking

5 Point coordinates: #1(-8, 0, 9); #2(-8, 3, 9); #3(-7, 12, 12); #4(-5, 15, 20); #5(0, 15, 20); #6(5, 15, 20); #7(7, 12, 12); #8(8, 3, 9); #9(8, 0, 9). 6) Select the NURBS curve tool and create a curve in the Right view for the top profile of the chair. Insert the point coordinates listed below, using the image below as reference guide. Press the Spacebar to end. Point coordinates: #1(0, 15, 20); #2(0, 13, 9); #3( 0, 12, 0). 7) Select the NURBS curve icon and create a curve in the Top view for the top profile of the chair. Insert the points listed below and use the following image as reference guide. Press the Spacebar to end. Learning solidthinking 5

6 Lesson 6 Point coordinates: #1(-5, 0, 0); #2(-5, 1, 0); #3(-6, 2, 0); #4(-6, 8, 0); #5(-3, 11, 0); #6(0, 12, 0); #7(3, 11, 0); #8(6, 8, 0); #9(6, 2, 0); #10(5, 1, 0); #11(5, 0, 0). The curves you created should be similar to those in the figure below. 6 Learning solidthinking

7 8) Next, create the surface that passes through these curves using the Curves Network. Select all vertical curves and press the Spacebar. Pick the horizontal curves and press the Spacebar again to complete the procedure. Now you need to build the central portion of the chair. 9) Select the NURBS curve icon and create a curve in the Right view. Insert the points listed below and use the following image as reference guide. Learning solidthinking 7

8 Lesson 6 Point coordinates: #1(0, 16, 9); #2(0, 11, 6); #3(0, 5, 6); #4(0, 0.8, 6); #5(0, 0.5, 4.6); #6(0, 1.5, 3.4); #7(0, 0.9, 0). 10) Translate the curve as indicated in the figure below. 8 Learning solidthinking

9 11) Click the Extrude icon and select the curve created in the previous step. Type 22 as the Extrusion Length. The extruded curve is displayed as shown below. Delete this object 12) Intersect the two surfaces and discard the portion that you do not need. Use the Intersect CT tool and select the first and the second surface. Type B at the Choose which surfaces will be split prompt. Select the faces to remove when prompted. Learning solidthinking 9

10 Lesson 6 Note: As you can see from the previous image, a new group containing the two separate surfaces has been created in the World Browser. Let s create two openings to the seat for decorative purposes. 13) Select the Top view and click the Ellipse: focuses, point icon. The first point indicates from where the ellipse should start; the second and third points are the two focuses of the ellipse. 10 Learning solidthinking

11 Focus#1(-4.9, 7, 0); Focus#2(-4.9, 3.9, 0); Point(-4.6, 5.7, 0). 14) Duplicate the ellipse that you just created by copying and pasting. Move it to the other side of the chair. Learning solidthinking 11

12 Lesson 6 These two curves serve to cut out the mid surface. 15) Select Trim, and then select the first created ellipse (Curve) and the sitting section of the chair (Surface). 16) Click the Trim icon again. Select the second ellipse (the copy) and then the trimmed surface. Your project should now look like the one in the following figure. 12 Learning solidthinking

13 Building the legs The final task is building the legs for the chair. 1) Select the NURBS curve icon and create a curve in the Right view. Insert the points listed below and use the image below as reference guide. Press the Spacebar to end. 2) Point coordinates: #1(0, 2.5, 5.9); #2(0, 2.5, 4.4); #3(0, 2.7, 2.5); #4(0, 2.8, 0.7); #5(0, 2.7, 0). 3) Once you have created the curve, move it to the right as shown in the figure below. 14 Lesson 6 4) Click the Top view and select the Circle: center, radius icon. Use 0, 0, 0 as default Local Axes Origin and 0.3 as Radius value. The circle you have created is positioned as follows. 14 Learning solidthinking

15 5) To create the chair s leg, select the Pipe icon. With the Profile curve, choose the circle created in step 4 and select the curve (step 1) as your Extrusion path curve. 6) Activate Mirror and select the chair s leg as your object to be mirrored. Press the Spacebar. When the Console calls for Mirror along, answer X. Learning solidthinking 15

16 Lesson 6 7) Activate again the Mirror command and select the two front legs as the object to reflect. Press the Spacebar. At the Console prompt Mirror along, enter Y. 8) Make sure you have selected this latter mirrored object in the World Browser and activate the Edit Mode. 17 9) Activate Snap to grid#2 through Edit 4 Active snap 4 Grid 2. 10) From the Top view, select the blue dot Start of mirror plane and drag it to the location defined by the following image. Note: After completing the mirror operation you can still adjust the position and orientation of the mirror plane using one of the following methods: a) In the Edit mode, click the Start of Mirror Plane hotspot and interactively define the distance of the mirrored copy from the selected item and its orientation. If you do not want to modify the distance, but only the orientation, just click and drag on either the End of Mirror Plane hotspot, or the Plane Normal hotspot. b) Use the Mirror Plane option in the Mirror tool panel to specify the plane (XY, YZ, or ZX) or the direction (Free) along which the mirroring will be performed. 18 Lesson 6 11) You can now hide the construction curve still present in your scene by activating the Hidden in interactive views button found in the World Browser (Hidden in rendering will be automatically enabled). Once you have completed this last command, your chair is ready and you can see the complete model in the following figure. 18 Learning solidthinking
