GUI overview Wall Clock Playback Controls Layout Selection Statistics Hide/Show Left Pane Device Tree Settings Playback Live Hide/Show Bottom Pane Playback Controls Timeline Main Cursor Continuous Recording: Blue Motion Events: Red FortiRecorder Central GUI contains the following main sections/panes: Top: toolbar area Left: resource column Right: windows for displaying videos Bottom: video timeline The resource column on the left contains several panels that can be collapsed or opened. The most important one is the Devices tree which holds all the recorders and their connected cameras. By simply dragging a camera from the device tree to the pane area on the right, live video will be displayed in the pane where the camera is dropped. The bottom of the resource column is the Control Panel. It is always associated with the selected pane. You can select a pane by simply clicking on it. This is indicated by a highlighted frame around the selected pane as well as a highlighted frame around the row in the Timeline control at the bottom. The rows of the Timeline control give an overview of what events and recordings are available for the video in the pane that it represents. This can be blue continuous recordings or red motion events. Fortinet Technologies Inc. 8 FortiRecorder Central 1.2 User Guide
The pane area is an extremely flexible work area to arrange the information in a way that best suits your task. It can be organized by selecting a Layout (Grid structure) from the Toolbar area. Each pane can hold a video stream in live or playback or other content like the configuration web interface of a FortiRecorder. FortiRecorder Central unifies access to multiple recorders, so they can be used as one integrated system. The pane area can show videos from different recorders at the same time. To start a playback, click on the timeline row of the pane at the desired time. The pane will switch from live view into playback view. This is indicated by the display of time and date of the playback both in the title bar of the pane and in the control panel if this pane is selected. Tip: You can drag the same camera into multiple panes or copy one pane into another by pressing the Ctrl key while dragging. Each pane is independent. So you can switch different live panes of the same camera into different playbacks. This way it is possible to watch one or many playbacks from the same camera while still watching the live video. Note that Ctrl-Dragging of a playback pane results in copying the same playback stream to multiple panes. So if the stream is paused it affects all panes showing this playback stream. Panes can hold different content. By dragging a recorder from the device tree to a pane, a Web UI of the recorder is displayed in the pane. You can easily access the camera configuration this way. The screenshot below shows such an arrangement. Also note the two panes on the right: each shows the lobby camera, but one in playback and one in live. Use mouse wheel to zoom in/out Fortinet Technologies Inc. 9 FortiRecorder Central 1.2 User Guide
At the bottom of the screen is the Timeline control. If a pane is selected the Main cursor shows the position of the current video stream. If it is live the cursor moves with current time. If you want to go into playback, one method is to simply drag the Main cursor to where you want to watch the playback. While dragging the cursor, the video pane shows video from the current position of the cursor. Tip: This scrubbing can be very useful to search events. To find out when a certain item was removed or added, you can quickly move along the timeline and see when it happens. The timeline can be adjusted in scale (zoomed in/out) using the mouse wheel. It can be shifted with the mouse by dragging it to the left or right. FortiRecorder connection status The connection status of recorders is indicated with colored bullets next to the recorder name in the Devices tab. A green bullet indicates an active connection with successful authorization. A yellow bullet indicates that the recorder is visible on the network, but the user credentials used at FortiRecorder Central are not acknowledged at the recorder. A red bullet indicates that the recorder is not visible on the network. It may be down or disconnected or misconfigured. Note: The user account and password that is used for FortiRecorder Central is also used to log into the FortiRecorders. So user accounts in the recorders must be synchronized with those in the Central. Any user permissions that are applied to this user in the individual recorder affect what FortiRecorder Central is allowed to do with this user logged in. Mouse usage tips Click Clicking on a video pane puts a selection frame around it and links this pane with the control section in the bottom left corner. In dialogs, use click to select a line from a list for copying or editing purposes. Clicking on a recording in the selected timeline and a playback will start at this point. Double-Click Double-Clicking a video pane zooms into full screen mode and vice versa. Fortinet Technologies Inc. 10 FortiRecorder Central 1.2 User Guide
Double-Clicking on a camera in the device tree displays video from that camera in the selected pane Double-Clicking on a View in the Views panel activates that view (rearranges the desktop to a stored configuration). Drag & Drop To view video from a camera, drag the camera name from the device tree onto a pane. Move video panes around by drag and drop. Ctrl-Drag copies content from one pane to another. Drop a video pane onto the trash can to delete it. Dragging the main cursor in Timeline control instantly shows playback from the cursor position. Shift the Timeline control left or right Mouse Wheel Use the mouse wheel to zoom in/out in a video pane for digital zoom Zoom out on the timeline control to look at more days of events or to zoom in for detailed information. Tip: Ctrl-Wheel moves the timeline rows up or down if more than six rows are stacked. Arranging the desktop The desktop offers a variety of arrangements to accommodate your preferences. The most commonly used adjustment is to choose a grid layout for the main area. Depending on how many videos a site requires, choose a suitable grid. Note that it is always possible to switch between layouts on the fly. If some videos are dropped because there are not enough panes for them, FortiRecorder Central will try to reconnect to the previous camera once the pane becomes visible again. The general appearance of the application can be in a windowed mode (with the Windows frame around it) or full screen (no border with the entire monitor filled with FortiRcorder Central). To go into a video only Monitor Wall mode, use the button with the three arrows. To go back into the normal view, use the ESC key or move the mouse to the top of the monitor and click in the three arrow button again. You can customize the toolbar by going to Settings > Toolbars and select which toolbars to display. Fortinet Technologies Inc. 11 FortiRecorder Central 1.2 User Guide
The default date/time format is the FortiRecorder Central AM/PM date time format. You can change the format by going to Settings > Settings > General. Organizing the device panel The Device Panel offers a variety of ways to organize your cameras. Tags are part of the location string for a camera. You can hover your mouse over a camera to view its tag and organize your camera list in the Device Panel by tags. To add tags to a camera 1. Log on to the FortiRecorder web UI. 2. Go to Camera > Configuration > Camera. 3. Enter a name in the Location textbox. 4. Add as many tags as you desire, following each one with a comma, in the same Location textbox. Fortinet Technologies Inc. 12 FortiRecorder Central 1.2 User Guide
The first entry in the location field (1 st floor) is the location. All entries after the location that are separated by a comma are tags. The Device Panel settings button provides the ability to group your cameras by recorder, device type, and tag. To search for a specific camera, enter the camera s name or tag in the Search textbox. Playback There are several methods to switch a live camera view into playback. First the pane needs to be selected (click on it) to have control over it. Recordings are indicated as blue or red bars in the timeline control at the bottom of the pane area. Blue indicates a continuous recording and red is a motion triggered recording. A yellow highlight is displayed around the timeline row that is related to the selected pane. If this row contains recordings, click on the bar at the point in time that you want to play back. Fortinet Technologies Inc. 13 FortiRecorder Central 1.2 User Guide
Note that the first click may select the row/pane and the second click will start the playback. For motion clips the playback will start at the beginning of the recording. Use dragging and the mouse zoom wheel to navigate to the desired point in time. Instead of dragging and zooming with the mouse wheel, you can click on the timeline controls to the left. The clock symbol jumps to the current time. Plus and minus zoom in/out and the arrows move left and right. To jump to a specific day/time you can use the calendar control. Sometimes an hour glass symbol appears at the bottom of this column. It indicates the timeline control is busy with updating the events that are displayed. For huge amounts of events this may sometimes take a while. The bottom row is a Consolidated Row. It shows an overlay of all alarm recordings of all cameras on a pane. This enables you to keep track of incoming alarms even if there are too many rows to be displayed at the same time and a scroll bar is used to move the stack of timeline rows up and down. To identify if a pane is in playback mode, check the time and date displayed at its title bar. These actions switch to playback mode: Click the 5s back button to get an instant replay of the last 5 seconds. This is very useful to review what just happened, but needs continuous recording. Scrub (drag) the Main cursor in the timeline control to the desired playback time. Click on a motion recording (playback will start from the beginning of the clip). Click on a continuous recording (blue). Playback will start from the point of clicking. Click the Pause button to stop the live video at the current position or the Play button to continue the video. The two functions are attached to the same button. FB Stop Next 5s back Previous Pause/Play FF LIVE To go back to live video: Click the LIVE button Drag the Main cursor to the right until it turns green (current time) Tip: The STOP button is used to clear the pane. Use PAUSE to stop the video. Locator control joggle Once a video is in playback, the Locator control is a convenient way to fine position the point of playback. Backward Slow-Fast Forward Slow-Fast Fortinet Technologies Inc. 14 FortiRecorder Central 1.2 User Guide
Locator Control The scale in the middle can be dragged to the left and right. This will move the playback backward and forward together with the mouse. So clicking the mouse button on the left side of the scale area and moving the mouse across to the right side of the scale will jog the video 10s forward. If the mouse button is kept pressed and the mouse moved back to the start then the video is right where it was at the beginning. The wedge shaped ends are proportional speed controls. If the mouse is pressed down in these areas the video will play forward or backward continuously until the mouse is released. The speed depends on the position. From slow motion to fast 64x normal speed. The FF and FB buttons accelerate the playback in forward or backward direction up to 64x. To go back to normal speed click the PLAY button. Tip: To move forward frame by frame click on the slow motion portion of the right wedge. Synchronized playback To control multiple recordings simultaneously, you can synchronize two or more playback panes. To do this. switch the panel to the left of the timeline bars from menu A to menu B by clicking on the top button. The three-line icon toggles a pane from independent to synchronized mode. To synchronize the playback from two or more panes, select this pane and click on the icon. This will change the title of the selected pane in a lighter grey. Select the second pane to be synched and add it to the synchronized group. The main cursor in the timeline bar also shows large diamonds for all the synchronized panes. Now every playback command or drag/click action that is applied to one of the synchronized panes is also applied to the other panes in the group. In this way, multiple cameras can be controlled with the same action. It is even possible to play back continuous recordings and motion clips side by side. The forward/pause/backward and joggle controls are also applied to the same group. Note: This synchronization is limited in its precision and time differences can be examined using the exact playback timestamps at the title bars. Re-synchronization is easy by just dragging the cursor to the desired point. Tip: Synchronization is applied to panes, not the video. So if you want to synchronize different cameras they can simply be dragged to a pane in the synchronized pane group. Alternatively Fortinet Technologies Inc. 15 FortiRecorder Central 1.2 User Guide
the pane that currently displays the desired camera can be included by clicking the To remove a pane from synch, click the same icon. icon. Video Download FortiRecorder Central supports the direct download of selected video clips. To download a video clip 1. Go to the frame you want to start the video. 2. Switch the timeline menu from A to B by selecting the A button. -> 3. Select the Selection Marker button to set the beginning marker to the current cursor position. 4. Drag the cursor to the end of the clip. 5. Select the Selection Marker button to set the end marker. Note: The exported video is marked on the timeline. 6. Select the Export Clip button to start the download. 7. Select the download directory. Settings You can access the following program settings through the Settings cogwheel on the top right corner: Screen size configuration Add or remove FortiRecorders Add or remove users Add, remove, or modify Layouts (desktop configuratons) Fortinet Technologies Inc. 16 FortiRecorder Central 1.2 User Guide
Add, remove, or modify Views (preconfigured combinations of Layouts and specific cameras) Clear all panes to remove video from all panes Incident Reports Login Authentication Reauthorize with FortiRecorder in case you change login credentials Export log files Incident Reports FortiRecorder Central supports saving and printing specific sections within your videos by creating an Incident Report. To create an incident report 1. Set the video to the frame you wish to display in the report. 2. Select the Settings button. 3. Select Incident Reports. 4. Select New Report. Layouts A layout is the structure of the Central grid -- which cells are large and which are small. The layouts can belong to an individual user (private) or be shared among all Central users. Users can select what best suits their specific camera setups that they have. The layouts are displayed on the toolbar ordered by the number of panes in the layout. Both private and shared layouts are combined into a single row of layouts. Fortinet Technologies Inc. 17 FortiRecorder Central 1.2 User Guide
To create your own layout go to Settings, and click the Layouts Tab. A layout can have a description that will appear in the tooltip along with the size and pane count. The owner can either be shared or one specific user. The selection of users is only available for administrators. The active flag determines if the layout will display in the toolbar. The grid width is limited to the range of 2 30 and the grid height is limited to the range of And when finished the layout can have up to 64 panes. The layout grid that is displayed will be scaled to match the aspect ratio of the main window. You can create large panes by holding and dragging from the top left cell to the bottom right cell of the desired pane. When a large pane is created, it will display the aspect ratio that it most closely matches (4 by 3, 5 by 4, 16 by 9, 16 by 10, 1.9 by 1, or Square). If the aspect ratio of the pane does not closely match one of the common ratios, it will instead display N.S. or non-standard. Login Authentication FortiCentral Recorder supports LDAP and RADIUS login authentication. Fortinet Technologies Inc. 18 FortiRecorder Central 1.2 User Guide
RADIUS authentication requires the name of the server, the server IP address, the port number and the shared secret between FRCC and the RADIUS server. LDAP authentication requires similar information to RADIUS authentication; however, LDAP authentication has three unique login methods: Try Bind with UPN or The Try Bind with UPN or radio button causes the Login Authentication to attempt to bind with the LDAP server by combining the user name with the contents of the UPN suffix/mail Domain textbox. Try Login with Base DN as Bind DN The Try Bind with UPN or radio button causes the Login Authentication to attempt to bind with the LDAP server by combining the user name and the contents of the Login Attribute ID textbox and the BASE DN to create a legitimate Bind DN. RADIUS Login Search User and Try to Bind DN The Search User and Try to Bind DN radio button causes the Lgin Authentication to first Bind LDAP Login using the values of the Bind DN textbox and the Bind Password textbox. It then inserts the user name into the string from the User Query textbox, where it has the asterisk character. Views Views are stored desktop configurations that can be shared or private. A view contains the layout of the desktop and which camera is displayed in each pane. This way you can store your favorite camera arrangements and quickly recall them from the Views panel on the left. There is a Shared section that contains Views that are available to all users, and there is a Private section where the user finds Views that are only available to the specific user. To create a view 1. Choose a layout. 2. Put the cameras into the panes. 3. Once satisfied with the arrangement, go to Settings and click the Views Tab. 4. Enter a name. 5. Optionally enter a description. The description will appear as a tooltip. 6. Set the owner: Shared or Private. Note that only the administrator have the right to assign a view to other users. Fortinet Technologies Inc. 19 FortiRecorder Central 1.2 User Guide
Note: If a new view is created, the view is always taken from the current view on the desktop. If an existing view is selected, it can be updated with the current view by clicking From Current View button. Tip: It is a good practice to create a Clear All view that contains only empty panes. You can use this view to quickly clear the desktop. Fortinet Technologies Inc. 20 FortiRecorder Central 1.2 User Guide
Statistics This toolbar shows gauges for network, memory and rendering performance in small meters. The peak is indicated with a push top and the average with a small triangle on the side. Yellow or red bars indicate problems. N: Network usage shows current, peak and average bandwidth of incoming data. If the recorder cannot send out video streams fast enough it will start skipping frames. The skip count can be observed in the tooltip for this control. If this occurs the bar turns yellow and then red. It is an indication that the network bandwidth is too low to support the number of video streams that are currently displayed. M: Memory usage shows how much memory the application is using. The total amount of available memory is indicated as well in the tooltip. Hold down the mouse over the control to keep the tooltip active. R: Rendering performance indicates how many MPixels are decoded per second. A 1MP image at 30fps requires 30MPixel/s for example. If more video is displayed in FortiRecorder Central the performance limit of the PC will eventually be reached. At this point the video decoder has to drop frames to keep up with the incoming video stream. This drop rate is displayed at the tooltip and if it occurs the bar turns yellow and red in more severe situations. This indicates that the CPU/graphics performance of the PC where FortiRecorder Central is running has reached its limit. Fortinet Technologies Inc. 21 FortiRecorder Central 1.2 User Guide
