JGN2plus JGN2plus looks for the visions of the future ICT society through activities in R&D and the future of New Generation Network The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) has launched the operation of research and development testbed network, JGN2plus, which further extends the capabilities of JGN2. The newly established research center, SPARC, will be the center of R&D activities which will drive the wide research collaboration activities with the industry, the academia, the government and regional organizations.
What s JGN2plus JGN2plus is a three-year project starting from April, 2008 which consists of activities and operations of an open testbed network for R&D. JGN2plus extends the activities which started in as JGN from 1999, and continued as JGN2 from JGN2plus will support NICT's driving activities for the development of the New Generation Network, and is the core of the new research center (SPARC). It is also an open testbed network to researchers for advance R&D activities in networking, field tests, and experiments for various applications.

Activities of JGN2plus To promote active research and development aiming for New Generation Network, JGN2plus will drive activities based on the following items: Collaboration with industry, academia, government, regional organizations to drive the activities toward New Generation Network, R&D on network and applications. Through field research activities, fostering of IT researchers. Activities with regional organizations through R&D activities and network interconnections through Partnership Access Point (PAP)/ Partnership Network (PNW). Promotion of application R&D activities using JGN2plus with public awarded research funds. Promote R&D activities not only inside Japan but also researchers worldwide with implementation of international circuits.
2 Types of JGN2plus Services Network Service allows researchers and developers to use the network very flexibly and effectively according to the R&D or field test plans. Platform Service (Trial) (from after April, 2009 planned) JGN2plus will offer after April, 2009 "Platform Service (Trial)" which will further collaborate operation and R&D activities for realizing New Generation Network.
Network Service Layer 3 Service (IP Connectivity) Service which allows users to connect more than 2 access points on the IP level (IPv4/IPv6 dual stack). Bandwidth can be chosen from 100Mbps to 10Gbps. Layer 2 Service (Ethernet Connectivity) Service which allows users to connect more than 2 access points on the Ethernet level by VLANs. Bandwidth can be chosen from 100Mbps to 10Gbps. Optical Testbed Service Dark fiber optical transmission between (Koganei, Tokyo) (Otemachi, Tokyo) (Hakusan, Tokyo) <Total Length: 592 km>

JGN2plus Services (L2 Service)
JGN2plus Service (Optical Testbed) JGN2plus Optical Testbed Services Koganei-Otemachi Section Approx 50km one way Single Mode Optical Fiber (ITU-T G.652) x 8 Low-loss SMF (within 20dB loss at 1550nm wavelength, without any amplifiers) Otemachi-Hakusan Section Approx 12km one way Single Mode Optical Fiber (ITU-T G.652) x 8 Low-loss SMF (within 10dB loss at 1550nm wavelength, without any amplifiers) Do not have an optical multiplier (optical amplifier) at the hubs or between hubs for JGN2plus Optical Testbed Services. Utilizing the system For public use (non NICT related institutions), provide test space at Koganei or Otemachi. Adjust the test schedule if any schedule conflicts are found.
Platform Service (Trial) - (from after April, 2009 planned) Measurement Service Service to collect and publish various measurement figures regarding JGN2plus and partner networks Provisioning Service Service to dynamically provision L2 network services Overlay Service Service to enable usage of overlay servers such as PlanetLab, PIAX etc. Virtual Network & Storage Service Service to enable users to manage virtual network and storage equipments
Network Structure JGN2plus network has the following network capabilities to allow various field tests as the largest testbed network in Japan. On the layer 2 level, network based on ethernet connectivity by layer 2 switches. On the layer 3 level, network based on IP connectivity with IPv4/IPv6 dual stack capability. The equipments which consists the JGN2plus network includes layer 2 switches and layer 3 routers, and has 59 access points nationwide. Backbone networks which connects the backbone points consists of networks from 1Gbps to 20Gbps. Other access points are connected by bandwidth such as 100Mbps. JGN2plus provides optical testbed network environment, which allows experiments which uses optical transmissions up to terabit networks.
Current JGN2plus Network
JGN2plus Network JGN2plus promotes collaborative activities between Japanese researchers and researchers outside of Japan by the following: 5 international circuits for R&D JGN2plus promotes R&D activities nationwide and is also contributes to the Japanese local activities by Interconnecting with various networks by PAP / PNW JGN2plus NOC (Network Operation Center), localed at Tokyo Otemachi (Chiyoda-ku) handles all of the operation and maintenance of JGN2plus network, including installation procedures such as path creation, and maintenance procedures such as repairing networks on failures.
International Circuits JGN2plus has installed and maintaining 5 international circuits, which are circuits from JGN2 (USA circuit, Thailand circuit, Singapore circuit) and 2 circuits added from JGN2plus (Korea circuit and Hong Kong circuit). Circuit USA Circuit: Tokyo - Los Angeles - Chicago Thailand Circuit: Tokyo - Bangkok Singapore Circuit: Tokyo - Singapore Korea Circuit (JGN2plus/APII): Fukuoka - Busan Hong Kong Circuit: Tokyo - Hong Kong Specifications 10Gbps (OC-192 SONET) 45Mbps (ATM) 155Mbps (OC-3 SONET) 10Gbps (10G-LR) 2.4Gbps (OC-48)
What's JGN2plus NOC JGN2plus NOC remotely operates and maintains JGN2plus's Japanese and international circuits, equipments, and access points.
