1 Set for PRC Review in Fall 2018 Program (WELD) - Welding AS.1490 Program Catalog Summary: Associate in Science: SC Program: AS.1490 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Welding Technology Program is designed to prepare students for positions in a variety of trades or service industries requiring technically trained and/or certified welders. The program is designed to prepare students for the opportunity to become certified welders under the standards set by the American Welding Society. Students can receive their certification by the American Welding Society in a variety of processes as part of the instructional program. The program is available in three formats: Associate in Science Degree in Welding Technology Certificate from Shasta College in Welding Technology Certification by the American Welding Society as a certified welder This degree is approved through the California Community College Chancellor s Office. Upon satisfactory completion of all degree requirements and filing an application for graduation with Admissions and Records, the student s transcript will reflect completion of this degree. PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this degree, the student should be able to: 1. Demonstrate competencies in job safety skills and awareness of workplace hazards. 2. Follow written and oral instructions in the interpretation of simple drawings and sketches, including welding symbols and the execution of the fabrication process. 3. Set up, maintain, and adjust welding related equipment. 4. Acquire skills and knowledge to make a successful transition to an entry-level position in the work force. 5. Pass workmanship tests using common welding processes. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS: CORE COURSES: DIES 48 Hydraulics 3.5 INDE 1 Career Planning for Industrial Technology 1 MATH 110* Essential Math 3 WELD 70 Beginning Welding 3 WELD 73 Structural Steel Metal Fabrication 3 WELD 118 Blueprint/Specification Reading (Mechanical) 2 WELD 170 Introduction to ARC Welding 3 WELD 171 Intermediate ARC Welding 3 WELD 174 Structural Steel MIG Welding 3 WELD 175 TIG Welding 3 WELD 178 Pipe Welding Fundamentals 3 WELD 182 Advanced ARC Welding 1.5 WELD 183 Advanced ARC Welding Specialty Lab 1.5 WELD 184 Advanced GTAW (TIG) Welding 1.5 WELD 186 Advanced Pipe Welding 2 WELD 188 Advanced GMAW (MIG) Welding 1.5 *May be used to fulfill General Education requirements. 2 ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS: Major 38.5 Additional General Education 18 General Electives 3.5 Degree Total 60* *Note: Calculation assumes a student will double-count the Multicultural graduation requirement with either a social science or humanities G.E. requirement and that the student will fulfill computer literacy through a test. If students plan well and see a counselor, they may be able to double count the Multicultural and Computer Literacy units. If these graduation requirements are added, the number of units is increased by 6 units. Fall 2016 Prepared By: Mark Smith, Jay Davis What improvements are needed? : Additional organization of the labs, machine maintenance, material procurement, and a bigger demand on the instructors to spend time away from students to complete these tasks requires the addition of a Paraprofessional. This need has been felt for the last few years and has been recommended repeatedly by the Advisory Committee. Additional training for instructors in Advanced Manufacturing and other CNC processes is necessary. Due to sustained growth coupled with losing valuable covered structures additional space is crucial to maintain our current enrollment safely. Who completed this form?: Mark Smith, Jay Davis, Rick Osbrink Participation in the report: Area Faculty (list in the next box) Summarize Participation comments: All comments are referenced the "what improvements are needed..." portion of the program review. Recommendation for Discontinuance?: N/A Analyze Overall PLO achievement: PLO #1 - Demonstrate competencies in job safety skills and awareness of workplace hazards - Achieved, this is an ongoing PLO that is effective in assess students abililty to be safe in the workplace. No changes necessary. PLO #2 - Drawings for fabrication as related to this grinding equipment - This PLO is assessed in Weld 118, and Weld 73 it is still a necessity as students enter the program without this knowledge. 100% of completing students are successful. PLO #3 - Maintaining and setting up this equipment - This PLO is 100% sucessful as all students that complete the program leave with these skills PLO #4 - These skills directly relate to making a successful transition to an entry-level position in the industry - 100% achievment in students who pass this program PLO #5 - Workmanship skills as related to certification - All students who complete this program have the workmanship skills to prepare and complete a certification plate. What changes could be (or have been) made to improve the program?: We continue to evolve based on input from the advisory committee as well as our additional professional development. The input from the committee and our own continued education keeps us current in the welding, fabrication, and manufacturing processes used currently in the industry. We are continued to be advised to upgrade to more automated equipment as well as integrate more forming and shearing equipment into the curriculum. We need to increase our degree and certificate completions. Resources needed to implement the changes noted above: We are involved in the CPT grant, Perkins, and Strong Workforce which will enable us to purchase the equipment necessary to train on the above equipment. Labor Market Demand: Large labor market demand nationwide. Currently the American Welding Society estimates a 200,000 welder shortage by % of the U.S. GNP utilizes welding as the primary or allied process of manufacturing. Please see the Supply/Demand spreadsheet in the documents for local wages and market demand. Duplication of training: No. The Shasta College Welding program is unique in it's training for the area, being the next level of training for all regional high school programs. Program effectiveness: Current success rate is at 87.28% and our retention rate is 95.19%. We are effective through our outreach and reputation within the industry to get new students and retain them throughout their chosen certificate or degree. Other data indications for program improvement: Advisory Committee reports increases in successful employment rates of our students. Replicating community college programs north of Sacramento?: Yuba, Butte, College of Redwoods, Lassen, Plumas, Mendocino, and Siskiyou all offer programs in Welding Technology programs CSU and UC Transfer impact analysis:: This program does not normally lead to transfer to a UC or CSU. We do require general education in our A.S. degree. Influence on related programs and services: Some students leave this program to start their own business which influences 07/06/2017 Generated by TracDat a product of Nuventive Page 1 of 3
3 transfer rates to business programs. Also construction management programs see our students. Specific additional program reflections: - Balance of curriculum including CTE, Transfer and Basic Skills. The necessity of basic skills continues to be an issue that can block our students ability to move into higher paying jobs. Although we have tutoring, the welding club, career planning we still a reluctance of our students to take advantage of tutoring in english and math - Possibility of conjoint programs with other community colleges As an ATF we are able to test for other colleges that do not have the CWI licenses or resources to test at this level. Effects on local industry We are a crucial component of supplying trained workers and incumbent worker training a wide array of area industry. This includes Diesel, Automotive, Advance Manufacturing, Welding/fabrication, Logging (SPI), City and County municipalities. Need for workers in the region in the skills taught in the program A high need for the skills taught in this program. Currently by the year 2020 we will experience a 200,000 welder shortage, nationally. 50% of the U.S. Gross National Product involves welding in one form or fashion. 40% of our current blue-collar workforce is retiring, increasing the need for additional trained workers. Student achievement rates in terms of graduation, transfer, or job placement We need to increase our degree and certificate completions. We think that some of our students are not applying for the degree or certificate they worked towards because they found work. Other factors for consideration: None 07/06/2017 Generated by TracDat a product of Nuventive Page 3 of 3
