2 T8 enss ac-voltage eries Fixed- Mode Overview T8 eries self-contained fixed-field senss are small, powerful, infrared diffuse mode senss with far-limit cutoff (a type of background suppression). Their high excess gain and fixed-field technology allow them to detect objects of low reflectivity, while igning background surfaces. The cutoff distance is fixed. Backgrounds and background objects must always be placed beyond the cutoff distance. Fixed- ensing They of Operation The T8FF compares the reflections of its emitted light beam () from an object back to the sens s two differently aimed detects, R and (see Figure ). f the near detect (R) light signal is stronger than the far detect () light signal (see object, closer than the cutoff distance), the sens responds to the object. f the far detect () light signal is stronger than the near detect (R) light signal (see object B, beyond the cutoff distance), the sens ignes the object. The cutoff distance f model T8FF senss is fixed at 25, 5 millimeters (", 2", 4"). Objects lying beyond the cutoff distance usually are igned, even if they are highly reflective. However, it is possible to falsely detect a background object, under certain conditions (see Background Reflectivity and Placement). n the drawings and discussion on these pages, the letters, R, and identify how the sens s three optical elements (mitter, ear Detect R, and Far Detect ) line up across the face of the sens. The location of these elements defines the sensing axis (see Figure 2). The excess gain curves f these products are shown on page 5. They show excess gain vs. sensing distance f senss with 25 mm, 5 mm, and mm (", 2", and 4") cutoffs. Maximum excess gain f the 25 mm models occurs at a lens-toobject distance of about 7 mm; f 5 mm models, at about mm; and f the mm models, at about 2 mm. ensing at near this distance will make maximum use of each sens s available sensing power. The background must be placed beyond the cutoff distance. (ote that the reflectivity of the background surface also may affect the cutoff distance.) Following these two guidelines will improve sensing reliability. Background Reflectivity and Placement void mirr-like backgrounds that produce specular reflections. False sens response will occur if a background surface reflects the sens s light me strongly to the near detect, sensing detect (R), than to the far detect, cutoff detect (). The result is a false O condition (Figure 3). To cure this problem, use a diffusely reflective (matte) background, angle either the sens the background (in any plane) so the background does not reflect light back to the sens (see Figure 4). Position the background as far beyond the cutoff distance as possible. n object beyond the cutoff distance, either stationary (and when positioned as shown in Figure 5), moving past the face of the sens in a direction perpendicular to the sensing axis, can cause unwanted triggering of the sens if me light is reflected to the near detect than to the far detect. The problem is easily remedied by rotating the sens 9 (Figure 6). The object then reflects the R and fields equally, resulting in no false triggering. better solution, if possible, may be to reposition the object the sens. R ensing xis s a general rule, the most reliable sensing of an object approaching from the side occurs when the line of approach is parallel to the sensing axis. Figure 2. 3 T8 enss ac-voltage eries ol ensitivity The effects of object reflectivity on cutoff distance, though small, may be imptant f some applications. t is expected that at any given cutoff setting, the actual cutoff distance f lower reflectance targets will be slightly shter than f higher reflectance targets (see Figure-of-Merit infmation on page 5). This behavi is known as col sensitivity. F example, an excess gain of (see page 5) f an object that reflects / as much light as the 9% white card is represented by the hizontal graph line at excess gain =. n object of this reflectivity results in a far limit cutoff of approximately 2 mm (.8"), f the 25 mm (") cutoff models f example; thus 2 mm represents the cutoff f this sens and target. These excess gain curves were generated using a white test card of 9% reflectance. Objects with reflectivity of less than 9% reflect less light back to the sens, and thus require proptionately me excess gain in der to be sensed with the same reliability as me reflective objects. When sensing an object of very low reflectivity, it may be especially imptant to sense it at near the distance of maximum excess gain.
