BYOD smartphones and tablets Building on what your staff already has in their pockets Little/no hardware costs No training on hardware, nothing new to carry Mobile accessible sites vs. mobile apps What s the difference? Which is better? Answer: both have value Task-focused apps vs. enterprise systems When is a series of apps better than an enterprise system? Deployment days vs. months Training none vs. extensive Hardware none vs. costly servers and work stations End-user impact minor vs. major 3

7 Success at Michigan DOT MDOT is an e-construction leader Piloted field data collection on mobile devices in in 2013 with 19 inspectors using both ipads and iphones Mobile app works with their state-wide construction management system (client/server) Results of pilot: App was intuitive, no training after a short demo Liked the size of the tablet, but phone was nice for instances where there were few comments Voice-to-text was popular Following pilot, production use available for all MDOT-let projects began in July 2014 Success at Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Pilot in 2014 Mobile app works with their state-wide construction management system (client/server) Users found that that the mobile app was very easy to use Users reported reduced office time, increased field presence for inspectors Results: An option for DWR data collection for all KYTC projects Considerations for implementing mobile device use at your agency BYOD vs. agency issued Personal use Blocking/banning sites Security Repair/replacement Upgrades/updates 7
