1 Construction Electrician Apprenticeship Year 3 ELEC 3 Trades Training Program Outline PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION DATE: March 2005 OUTLINE EFFECTIVE DATE: March 2017 PROGRAM OUTLINE REVIEW DATE: September 2022 GENERAL PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This program is Year 3 of the 4 Year BC Electrical Trades Apprenticeship Program. The program is 10 weeks in length and covers the learning outcomes for Year 3 of the electrical trade. Training topics covered in this program include analyzing three-phase and electronic circuits, using power quality analyzers, reading and interpreting drawings and manuals, installing low voltage distribution systems, installing electrical equipment such as transformers, protective devices, DC motors and generators, AC motors and generators, and installing control circuits and devices. Program Information: This program is Level 3 of the British Columbia Construction Electrician Apprenticeship program. Upon successful completion of all four levels and appropriate time in the trade, the student may be eligible to write the Inter-provincial exam in Electrical. Delivery: This program is delivered in block intake at College of the Rockies Gold Creek campus in Cranbrook. Electrical Wiring: Industrial. Delmar Delmar s Standard Textbook of Electricity, 3 rd Ed. (Supplemental) Students will receive Provincial Apprenticeship Curriculum pertinent to the apprenticeship level in which they are enrolled. PROGRAM COMPETENCIES: Upon the successful completion of this program, students will be able to describe characteristics of three phase AC; calculate electrical quantities regarding three phase circuits; connect and test three phase transformer banks; describe the construction and operation of DC machines; describe the construction and operation of three phase AC machines; connect and test different starting techniques of three phase AC motors; describe the features and application of solid state devices; apply the Canadian Electrical Code; and understand and apply commercial and industrial wiring practices. This program should help students incorporate a safety first approach to every job and in every situation; make generalizations (transfer knowledge and training to new situations); think critically and act logically to evaluate situations; adapt to new situations and demands by applying and/or updating knowledge and skills; demonstrate initiative, motivation, energy and persistence to get the job done; work towards accomplishing collective goals and responsibilities; and recognize when it is necessary to seek more information from others. Students must obtain a mark of 70% overall to pass the program. Students are continually evaluated on practical work in the shop and may request information or update of their performance at any time throughout the length of the program. Regular attendance is encouraged for success in this program. Competency in the techniques and methods necessary to a given trade requires significant supervised practice. Students are expected to follow Policy "Vocational Student Withdrawals as a Result of Absence". WorkSafeBC regulations apply to all trades programs. Students are expected to behave accordingly. For shop activities students must have safety-toed footwear. This footwear must be worn at all times in the shop. Trades programs require that students own, use and maintain proper eye safety wear and work clothes (coveralls). Safety procedures must be followed while working in the shop area. The tool room attendant is also the first aid attendant for the building. Students may only work in the shop during assigned lab times. If an incident occurs, no matter how minor, students must report it to the tool room attendant immediately. INDUSTRY SITE VISITS: There may be off-site work practicums and field trips organized in the program as opportunity or resources are available during this program. 6 transportation for practicums and field trips. Students are expected to follow all college policies and procedures when participating in off-campus activities. STUDENTS MUST PROVIDE THEIR OWN: linesman pliers diagonal cutters hacksaw wire strippers Phillips screwdriver slotted screwdriver Robertson screwdriver torpedo level knife tape measure channel lock pliers 6" crescent wrench personal digital multimeter minimum 10m/v EXAM POLICY: Students must attend all required scheduled exams that make up a final grade at the appointed time and place. Individual instructors may accommodate for illness or personal crisis. Additional accommodation will not be made unless a written request is sent to and approved by the appropriate Department Head prior to the scheduled exam. Any student who misses a scheduled exam without approval will be given a grade of 0 for the exam. PROGRAM GRADE: Program grades are assigned as follows: COM Completed to defined standard 70% NCG No Credit Granted < 70% Successful completion of the in-school training for each level is defined as a final score of 70% or greater.
