1 Industrial Electrical Apprenticeship Year 3 IELEC3 Trades Training Program Outline PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION DATE: March 2014 OUTLINE EFFECTIVE DATE: January 2017 PROGRAM OUTLINE REVIEW DATE: September 2022 GENERAL PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This program is Year 3 of the 4 Year British Columbia Industrial Electrical Trades Apprenticeship Program. The program is 10 weeks in length and covers the learning outcomes for year three of the Industrial Electrical trade. An industrial electrician is a skilled individual who must possess fundamental and specialized knowledge and skills related to the installation and maintenance of electrical devices and components found in industrial settings. Industrial electricians inspect, install, troubleshoot, repair and service (includes calibration and preventive/predictive maintenance) electrical equipment such as motors, generators, pumps, heavy duty machines, illumination systems, environmental regulating systems, communication systems, and associated electrical and electronic controls. These trade persons are employed by maintenance departments of factories, plants, mines, shipyards, oil and gas rigs, as well as platforms, and other industrial enterprises. Students will receive Provincial Apprenticeship Curriculum pertinent to the apprenticeship level in which they are enrolled. Upon successful completion of all four levels and appropriate time in the trade, the student may be eligible to write the inter-provincial exam in Industrial Electrical. Program Information: This program is Level 3 of the British Columbia Industrial Electrician Apprenticeship Program. Delivery: This program is delivered through block intake at College of the Rockies, Gold Creek Campus in Cranbrook. 3 Electrical Wiring Residential (Mullin, 6 th Cdn) Alternating Current Fundamentals (Herman, 8 th Edition) Electrical Wiring Commercial (Mullin, 5th Cdn) Electrical Wiring Industrial (Smith, 3 rd Cdn) Delmar's Standard Textbook of Electricity (Herman, 5 th Edition) PROGRAM COMPETENCIES: Upon the successful completion of this program, students will be able to describe electrical theory of three-phase circuits; connect and test the following: motor braking and deceleration controls, reduced-voltage starters, wound-rotor starters, and synchronous motor starters; demonstrate knowledge of the operation and construction of single-phase, three-phase and wound-rotor AC motors, AC alternators, AC servomotors; demonstrate knowledge of the operation and construction of DC machines and DC servo motors; demonstrate and apply knowledge of the installation and maintenance of integrated control system, and general operation and uses of a PLC and demonstrate knowledge of PLC hardware components; demonstrate knowledge of the installation of PLC networks, communication protocols, demonstrate knowledge of types of communications buses and different networks; demonstrate knowledge of reading and writing programming language for PLCs, demonstrate knowledge of the installation and maintenance of common software applications to operate PLCs; demonstrate knowledge of connecting, grounding, installing and maintaining transformers; demonstrate knowledge of AC power factor and calculate capacitance; convert between numbering systems, describe the operating principles of logic gates, and describe the operating principles and circuit analysis of op-amps; connect and test Tyhristor circuits, and connect and test three-phase rectifiers. When the apprentice completes the program, the instructor will report evaluation results to the Industry Training Authority. Students must obtain a mark of 70% overall to pass the program. Students are continually evaluated on practical work in the shop and may request information or update of their performance at any time throughout the length of the program. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY: Students are expected to follow all College Policies and Practices as outlined in the program handout package. Regular attendance is encouraged for success in this program. Competency in the techniques and methods necessary to a given trade requires significant supervised practice. Students are expected to follow Policy Vocational Student Withdrawals as a Result of Absence. WorkSafeBC Board regulations apply to all trades programs: students are expected to behave accordingly. Students are required to have safety-toed footwear that must be worn at all times in the shop. Trades programs require that students use and maintain proper eye safety wear and work clothes (coveralls). Safety procedures must be followed while working in the shop area. The tool room attendant is also the first aid attendant for the building. Students may only work in the shop during assigned lab times. 5 INDUSTRY SITE VISITS: There may be off-site work practicums and field trips organized in the program as opportunity or resources are available during this program. Students are required to supply their own transportation for practicums and field trips. Students are expected to follow all college policies and procedures when participating in off-campus activities. Individual instructors may accommodate for illness or personal crisis. Additional accommodation will not be made unless a written request is sent to and approved by the appropriate Department Head prior to the scheduled exam. Any student who misses a scheduled exam without approval will be given a grade of 0 for the exam. PROGRAM GRADE: Program grades are assigned as follows: COM Completed to defined standard > 70 NCG No Credit Granted < 70 Successful completion of the in-school training for each level is defined as a final score of 70% or greater (ITA website).
