1 Monsoon System Requirements Hardware System Requirements Click here to see the online version of this document While a number of factors will affect the performance of your Monsoon solution, managing multiple marketplaces, maintaining a large inventory of items, and implementing sophisticated pricing strategies are among the most resource consuming tasks associated with running your online business. Our Recommended Hardware Requirements listed below are the specifications that we have seen work best for our clients. Note: Monsoon requires an always on internet connection to successfully manage your business 24x7. Your Primary machine should be connected to the internet and running at all times for best performance. Primary installations on laptop computers are not recommended, unless the laptop will be left connected and running at all times. Dial-up, satellite and wireless internet connections are not supported. 3 Networking System Requirements If you have an advanced firewall or proxy server that requires detailed configuration, you will need to configure firewall exceptions to allow certain Ports and Programs to run Monsoon. This is only required of the Windows Firewall Software (or other firewall software like Symantec, etc.) running on the computers that actually have Monsoon installed on. These changes almost never have to be made on a corporate hardware firewall. The only exception is when the primary and a secondary are on separate physical networks with a hardware firewall between them, in which case the changes would have to be made on the hardware firewall. Windows File/Printer sharing (requires UPD Port 137) UDP Ports TCP Ports 1002, 2112, 2113, 1433, 1434 sqlservr.exe sqlbrowser.exe Monsoonmaster.exe Monsoonworker.exe MonsoonDesktop.exe If your firewall requires additional configuration detail, the following information may be of assistance All secondary machines must be able to send outgoing data on UDP Port and TCP Ports 1002, 1433, 1434, 2112, and Secondary workstations actually only need to be able to send to the primary on the above ports, not to the outside world. If the primary and secondary reside on the same network (which is almost always the case), no changes need to be made to a hardware firewall to accommodate the above. The primary machine must be able to receive incoming information on UDP Port and TCP Ports 1002, 1433, 1434, 2112, and Similar to above, no changes need to be made to a hardware firewall unless they are on separate networks. If you have a non-standard configuration where the SQL server is different from the primary machine, that machine needs to be able to receive incoming information on TCP Ports 1433 and The primary machine will also need to send outgoing data to TCP ports 1433 and Your system should be setup for outgoing communication on FTP port 21, HTTP port 80, and HTTPS port 443.

6 Basic Networking for Monsoon This guide outlines the basic requirements for setting up a network that will support a multi-station installation of Monsoon Software. Who is this Guide for? This guide will be most useful for: Monsoon users who need to set up a network (multiple seat licenses). Advanced users of Monsoon with some networking experience For the pro, this guide should provide a quick overview of the basic networking requirements that need to be met. If you have no experience creating networks, you will find this document challenging. However, it should give you a good idea of what is required. If you have never set up a network before, we recommend that you get professional assistance.

7 Basic Networking Set-up You will need: A Broadband Internet connection (i.e. high-speed Cable or DSL). A broadband router capable of connecting multiple PC's to the Internet. A broadband router will enable multiple computers to use the same Internet connection. You must purchase a router with enough available ports to plug in all the computers running Monsoon software. Tip: Look in the description of the router and make sure it lists 4 or more LAN ports. Tip: Make sure you are purchasing a router; not a hub, switch or firewall. Two or more computers with Windows installed. Each of these computers must have an Ethernet card installed or built-in. If you do not have Ethernet connections on your machines, you will need to have them installed in order to support a network. Enough Ethernet cables to connect your PC's to the router and the router to your internet connection. E.g., if you have 2 Monsoon computers you will need 3 Ethernet cables (represented by arrows on the diagram below) 2 cables to connect your two PC s to your router 1 cable to connect your router to your high-speed modem WARNING! Wireless connections should not be used to connect your Primary machine to the internet. Wireless signal strength is often not constant enough to maintain the alwayson connection required by your Monsoon software. Intermittent connections for your Primary machine will cause serious problems with your Monsoon software. Wireless connections for Secondary machines (i.e., workstations) may be connected to your Primary via a wireless network. Intermittent connectivity may cause these stations to work less efficiently than if they were connected to a wired network. You may be able to get your wireless network working with Monsoon installed on it, but Monsoon can make no recommendations on how this might be done.

8 Wireless networks cannot be supported by Monsoon support specialists. Simple is Best When building a computer network, it is often best to keep it as simple as possible. This helps to keep costs down and aids in troubleshooting (It is much easier to find and eliminate a problem when you limit the number of variables in your system). Here is a diagram of a simple network that would be sufficient to support multiple Monsoon workstations. Configuring Your Router When setting up your router, refer to the documentation that came with it. Monsoon uses standard ports. Follow your router s installation instructions. They will show you how to connect and configure it to work with your high-speed modem and your Windows network.

9 Setting up Your Network After you have connected each of your PCs to your router, you will need to create your network. In Windows, go to Start > Control Panel Run the Windows Networking Setup Wizard. You must make sure all Monsoon computers are joined to the same workgroup. See this web tutorial for more information: Working with Anti-Virus and Firewall Software When installing your Monsoon software, allow access to Monsoon and SQL Server when prompted by your anti-virus software. On the primary installation you must further configure the firewall exceptions as follows, Allow Windows File/Printer sharing Allow UDP Ports & 137 Allow TCP Ports 1002, 2112, 2113, 1433, 1434 Allow sqlservr.exe Allow sqlbrowser.exe Allow monsoonmaster.exe Allow monsoonworker.exe Allow monsoondesktop.exe Test Connectivity When you install a Monsoon workstation, it will attempt to locate your Monsoon Server on your network. If Monsoon is not able to detect your Monsoon Server, here are some things to check: How To: Test Connectivity 1) Turn off your Windows firewall. 2) Turn off all anti-virus, anti-spyware and internet monitoring software. 3) Check the status of port 1433

10 4) Is there an active firewall on any networking device such as a router? 5) Are the SQL Server Named Pipes and TCP\IP Protocols enabled on the server? 6) If using Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008, do you have SQL Server Authentication and Windows Authentication enabled? 7) Do you need to install MDAC on your operating system (this varies depending on which operating system you are using)? Remote Connections to Monsoon A remote connection allows you to access a machine that is on your network from a location outside your network. For instance, you could log into your Monsoon Server from your home computer to check on how many orders you had received the night before. If you would like to use Monsoon from a remote location, we recommend GoToMyPC. You will need to subscribe to the GoToMyPC. service by setting up an account. Then you will need to install the necessary GoToMyPC. software on each of the machines you would like to access Log on to for more details. Other Options There are other options for connecting remotely to monsoon. Monsoon Support Specialists are not able to support these options. VNC (Virtual Network Computing) is an open source remote connection protocol. This option may work for you if you are a fairly tech savvy user. VPN (Virtual Private Network) may present itself as an option if you are an advanced user not put off by technical complexity. Windows Remote Desktop is a viable remote method, but can be tricky if you are trying to navigate through a network to get to your target machine. Troubleshooting Turn off all anti-virus, firewall and internet security software. Check to see if there is a firewall installed and active in your router.

11 If you are able to connect with these turned off, then turn them back on one at a time and make certain that you have allowed both Monsoon and SQL Server for each one. When installing Monsoon Workstation, you should see Monsoon Server listed. If not, your network is not set up properly. You should check to make certain your router and PCs are connected per your router s documentation. Turn off all anti-virus, firewall and internet security protocols. Then try re-running the Windows Network Start-up Wizard. Are you wireless? Try connecting your network using Ethernet cables. If the problem persists then you should re-run the Windows Network Start-up Wizard while your entire network is connected by cabling. WARNING! Wireless networks are not recommended or supportable by Monsoon.
