Distributed Antenna System (DAS) and Passive Optic Network (PON) Update March
DAS and PON Installation for Greenspring Agenda Current Environment and Challenges Solutions Schedule 2
Current Environment Current State Cellular Coverage A full assessment of the campus was done in 2012 to determine the exact extent of the problem. An acceptable signal threshold is less than or equal to -85 dbm Building Verizon Sprint T-mobile AT&T Canterbury Square Connor Terrace Crestwood Court Evergreen Terrace (GR) Forest View Grove Terrace Hampton Place Hunters Crossing Jackson Court Madison Green Maple Creek Oak Hill Park View Rose Court (GR) Town Center Village Square Walden Court Campus
Current Environment Current State (con t) Wireless Internet You have been asking for wireless at Greenspring for years New residents are seeing other facilities that already provide this service Adult children are coming to expect these types of access Phone Services New resident satisfaction Transfers on phone number from IL to GR and back Dealing with Providers Infrastructure management challenges Multiple wired installations are aging Multiple control systems with different connectivity requirements 4
Solution Cellular Coverage Cellular Tower The best approach to remedy the cellular issues is to have a carrier construct a tower on the campus to provide service. After lengthy discussions with 2 carriers, the campus is not located in an area that would provide enough value to the carriers to construct the tower in the near future (even if we pay for the tower). Since this is no longer a possibility, Greenspring will need to install its own network to improve cellular service. 5
Solution Cellular Coverage Distributed Antenna System (DAS) In order to properly scope out the installation of a Distributed Antenna System (DAS), a full site survey was conducted. To enable access to all of the primary carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint) the solution will be comprised of a multicarrier, host neutral, Corning MobileAccess DAS solution based on using their TSX/QSX chassis remotes for the Greenspring campus. The solution offered delivers -85dBm service to over 95% of the campus facilities in the design, from 700MHz LTE to 2100MHz AWS. This means all services will perform excellently, regardless of the users service provider. The proposed system will also enhance the users battery life and data throughput. 6
Solution Cellular Coverage DAS Installation The DAS will be comprised of three different systems 1. Neutral Host DAS Infrastructure - This represents the antennas, remote radio cabinets, Head End equipment and all associated cable requirements and installation of the components and equipment, provisioning, commissioning, testing and turn up. 2. Carrier Specific Equipment - This represents each of the 4 major carriers (AT&T Wireless, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile and Sprint) and their respective equipment and installation costs. 3. Optional LTE Equipment - This represents the cost associated with AT&T and Verizon since they are most aggressive with their roll-out of their respective LTE offering. We have already successfully negotiated with Verizon Wireless for their 3G and 4G equipment to be installed on the DAS. Now that we have Verizon on board we will negotiate with the other carriers 7
What is PON? Traditional Approach Residential Units / General Building Multiple cabling runs are made from each unit back to a central location Phones TVs Life Safety Building Controls Staff Locations Multiple cabling runs are made from each unit back to a central location Phones PCs Printers 8
Traditional Cabling requires space, power and cooling 9
What is PON? Passive Optical Network 10
PON Cabling Fiber Splitter OLT Located in the server room 11
Centralized Management Software Platform 12
PON Infrastructure Benefits Easier and more reliable installation Lifespan of fiber vs copper cabling Up to 10 times longer lifespan for fiber vs copper Investment in fiber cabling can adapt over time where copper cannot Electronics More extensible technology Versatility Supports multiple systems connectivity needs Ongoing operations and maintenance of PON vs. traditional networking is less expensive 13
What does this mean to you? Wireless Internet Available campus wide Provided and supported by Greenspring in partnership with Erickson Living Corporate IT Each resident will be able to have a private, secure Wi-Fi network to connect ipads, laptops, printers, etc. The Wi-Fi network at Greenspring will be connected to a very high speed connection to a major service provider to ensure high levels of availability and speed. There will be a central number to call, staffed by Erickson employees, for technical support and services. Cost will be included as part of your monthly service fee 14
What does this mean to you? Phone Service Provided and supported by Greenspring in partnership with Erickson Living Corporate IT Services include local, long distance, caller ID, voice mail, etc. New residents will be provided a phone number prior to moving in, or may be able to quickly port their existing number to Greenspring. Phone numbers can be easily moved between Independent Living and GR There will be a central number to call, staffed by Erickson employees, for technical support and services. Cost will be included as part of your monthly service fee 15
What does this mean to you? Cable TV We are still working with Cable TV providers to determine the best way to deliver enhanced services to you through our PON. As these negotiations continue and come to a successful conclusion we will be sharing that information with you 16
