2 Times and Technology are Changing Major technological advances have driven the pace of change and enhanced our lifestyles over the past years. Such changes are now commonplace ashore and have become equally essential to ship builders and owners. Their demands are increasingly for integrated network solutions. n Ethernet is now the standard environment when working with a PC or laptop either from home, the workplace or on the move n Connection to the World Wide Web and accounts are essential to modern day communication n Mobile communication such as GSM and WiFi networks keeps people in touch anywhere and anytime n Home entertainment has changed from a few available analogue channels to hundreds of digital high quality broadcasted programs n Older generation media such as VHS tapes have been replaced by DVD, BD and now by Video on Demand services n Telephone services have been developed from simple analogue connections via ISDN (S0) bus systems to the nearly unlimited Voice over IP solutions, opening up the range to high quality video conferencing n CCTV Cameras are now available as IP-Cameras representing increased functionality and flexibility compared to analogue systems (e.g. different resolutions) and permit use of any networked PC for monitoring and control n Also Master-Clock systems are now available as IP solution including network time protocol servers n All these technologies of the former stand alone systems are now applications on the one Ethernet network Infotainment show room and development facility in Hamburg 2

3 Benefits of Integrated Network Solutions Integrated network solutions are configurable to provide systems comparable to classic solutions or can provide more features in accordance with the available budget. The main benefits of an integrated network solution are: Ease of Use (self-explanatory) Network applications and hardware are manageable via web interfaces. This permits system appliances such as VoIP (telephone), Master clock, Entertainment (TV and Video), CCTV, network switches etc. are all controllable and configurable from any networked PC protected by administrator password. Remote maintenance Systems available via web-interface can be monitored and controlled via communication links to shore. Standardised Network Products and Protocols The usage of common products using standard network protocols enables integrated network systems flexibility to add any Ethernet based application dependant upon available bandwidth. These systems will always be state-of-theart when delivered. Crew Welfare and Passenger Services Whether crew or passengers, services such as Internet, and live Television at sea enhance our comfort and communication with those ashore. Integrated network solutions provide these features from as little as only one Ethernet RJ45 socket and a PC onboard. Cable and Weight reduction All network applications can use the same physical network separated by simple virtual LANs. This reduces dramatically the total required cable length, number of cable types and total cable weight. Transponder Wizard - Web-Interface for easy administration of distributed TV programs Flexibility A network port can be easily changed from one application to another e.g. an office PC port, a telephone VoIP port a Slave Clock port or other similar appliance. The change from one application to another can be achieved via a few mouse clicks using the above described webinterfaces. 3

Interfacing to the standard hotel management system is available. Infotainment Plus Billing The yacht solution for Mega-Yachts incorporates a personalised sophisticated Graphical User Interface for PCs, Apple ipod and ipad or other devices as defined by the customer. Advanced Room Automation Infotainment Yacht Video on Demand services with HD quality are available. The solution includes the integration of advanced room control via the user interface. 6

6 Infotainment Compact The solution for container ships, bulkers, tankers and other such commercial vessels Overview The compact Infotainment solution was developed to provide a state-of-the-art, cost effective and easy to handle information and entertainment system for commercial ships. The system is based on an Ethernet network with a central router / switch and server rack. It is designed to provide a wide range of modularity in hard- & software to fulfil each customer s requirements. The main target of the system is to provide satellite TV and Internet access to the crew. Sample of a start screen (graphical user interface) Functionality The compact Infotainment solution relies on a client-server architecture based on a modular design allowing functional extensions. The graphical user interface supports easy-to-use navigation between the offered services. It is possible to customise the user interface, e.g. to change colours or logos to integrate the ship owners corporate identity. The administration and remote management and maintenance could be done via Web-Interfaces by an onboard or shore based administrator. Digital Live-TV and radio signals will be distributed as a real Multicast Stream which decreases the amount of required network bandwidth. Crew and passengers can use the Infotainment system with a simple PC including watching TV or a standard TV set with a Set Top Box. The network structure consists of more than only one router / switch and will be adapted to the special requirements of each ship.
