1 NET323 D: NETWORKS PROTOCOLS Networks and Communication Systems Department TA. Anfal AlHazzaa Lab # 2 : Hub Vs. Switch

Lab Objectives 2 To create two small LANs contain three PCs using Packet Tracer (one with hub and one with switch) To differentiate between hub and switch function To use Packet Tracer to simulate a small LAN To show the movement of packet in each layer

Lab Content 3 The difference between hub and switch. Using Packet Tracer to create and simulate Small LAN connected by hub Small LAN connected by switch Showing the movement of the packet in each layer

The difference between switch and hub 4 Hub: forwards the packet that arrives on any of its inputs on all the outputs regardless the destination of the packet Switch: forwards incoming packets to one or more outputs depending on the destination(s) of the packet

The difference between switch and hub cont. 5 Switch Hub

Scenario # Create a simple LAN contains three PCs named (A, B and C) connected by hub (as shown in the following figure) 2. Perform a ping between PC A and PC B in realtime mode and simulation mode

Step 1(Adding 3 PCs) 7 1. Open The Packet tracer 2. Add three PCs to the workspace ( by select the Generic PC under End Devices and drag it onto the workspace) 3. Rename them and set their IPs as the following table: PC name IP Mask A B C

Step 1(Adding 3 PCs) cont Rename the Device Click on the PC config tab Display name

Step 1(Adding 3 PCs) cont Change IP Desktop tab IP configuration enter IP address Repeat the same steps for PC B and PC C

Step 2 (Adding Hub and connection) Under Hubs, select hub-pt and drag it to the workspace Under Connections, select Copper Straight-through cable to connect the hub with the 3 PCs

Step 3 (Performing a Ping in Realtime mode) 11 Click on PC A Desktop tap Command Prompt Write the following command Ping *Repeat the same steps to test connection between PC A & PC C

Step 4 (Performing a Ping in Simulation mode) Change the mode to simulation Click on Edit Filters button, uncheck show All/N check on ICMP,

ICMP 13 ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) is a message control and error-reporting protocol between a host server and a gateway to the Internet

Step 4 (Performing a Ping in Simulation mode) 14 Add Simple PDU tool Click on it Click on the first PC Click on the second PC 2 3 Click on Auto Capture/play button to run the Simulation

Result

To show the movement of packet in each layer 16 Click on the packet envelope on the workspace to bring up the PDU Information window like the one shown in the screenshot (in the next slide) This window contains the OSI model tab which shows how the packet is processed at each layer of the OSI model by the current device

To show the movement of packet in each layer 17

Scenario # Create a simple LAN contains three PCs named (A, B and C) connected by switch(as shown in the following figure) 2. Perform a ping between PC A and PC B in realtime mode and simulation mode

Step 1(Adding 3 PCs) Open The Packet tracer 2. Add three PCs to the workspace ( by select the Generic PC under End Devices and drag it onto the workspace) 3. Rename them and set their IPs as the following PC name IP Mask A B C

Step 1(Adding 3 PCs) cont Rename the Device Click on the PC config tab Display name

Step 1(Adding 3 PCs) cont Change IP Desktop tab IP configuration enter IP address Repeat the same steps for PC B and PC C

Step 2 (Adding Switch and connection) Under Switches, select switch and drag it to the workspace Under Connections, select Copper Straight-through cable to connect the switch with the 3 PCs press fast forward time

Step 3 (Performing Ping in Realtime mode) 23 Click on PC A Desktop tap Command Prompt Write the following command Ping *Repeat the same steps to test connection between PC A & PC C

Step 4 (Performing Ping in Simulation mode) Change the mode to simulation Click on Edit Filters button, check on ICMP

25 Step 4 (Performing Ping in Simulation mode) Add Simple PDU tool Click on it Click on the first PC Click on the second PC 2 3 Click on Auto Capture/play button to run the Simulation 13-Sep-15
